Scout a picturesque cliffside and fire up the wind machines because Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas are ready to feel the wind in their hair while serenading audiences for the musical comedy Power Ballad. The film starring Rudd and Jonas revolves around a wedding singer (Rudd), a rock star (Jonas), and the song that divides them. The project hails from 30West and Anthony Bregman’s Likely Story.
John Carney directs Power Ballad from a script he co-wrote with Peter McDonald, who wrote and directed the comedy short Pentecost and co-wrote The Bachelor Weekend with John Butler.
“We are so excited to bring John Carney’s next film to Cannes. John has a magic ability to weave great music into wonderfully engaging and universally relatable stories that make audience emotions run high,” said Alex Walton of WME. “Power Ballad is fun and heartwarming – themes that audiences crave today. Joe Keery is best known as Steve Harrington, a.k.a. the guy with the hair, on Netflix series Stranger Things. But the actor is also part of musical project Djo, which has dropped its debut single “Roddy.”
On the track, Keery, who previously played in Chicago band Post Animal, takes on the vocals, singing, “So man in the mirror/Make another home here/You’re put together but clear/You’re lackin’ substance not fear.” The psych-tinged indie rock tune was written by Keery himself and a low-key, intimate vibe.

The first thing you want from a history of MTV is to get dunked in the hot-but-cool nostalgia of it, and the fast, fleet documentary “I Want My MTV” delivers those 1980s goods about as good as you can get. Here’s “Video Killed the Radio Star,” the novelty single by the Buggles that launched the channel on Aug. 1, 1981 — a tune that, in hindsight, sounds as sing-song catchy in its percolating bliss as a Divertimento by Mozart. Here are the five original VJs — shaggy Mark Goodman, earnest Alan Hunter, snarky Martha Quinn, jovial J.J. Jackson, and hipstery Nina Blackwood — fumbling around against a set that looks more like Wayne Campbell’s basement than a television studio, tossing off we’re-making-this-up-on-the-spot-and-we-know-it patter that became the casual formative version of “attitude.”

Although the name “Disney” has become roughly synonymous with a multi-tentacled corporate octopus over the years, latching onto every profitable pop culture phenomenon it can reach and then squeezing it dry — it’s important to remember that it’s also synonymous with “nature documentaries,” and that it has been ever since the Oscar-winning short “Seal Island” way back in 1948.
These nature docs have, over the decades, exposed audiences and particularly Disney’s target demo of wholesome family units to the wide-ranging world of animals in their various natural habitats. For the last 11 years, the Disneynature label has been keeping this torch aflame, and their latest documentary “Penguins” is another feather in the imprint’s cap.
Sumptuously photographed and narratively benign, “Penguins” explores the life of the Adélie penguin, which is smaller than its Emperor cousins and — arguably — even cuter. Ed Helms narrates and provides the voice for our Adélie protagonist,...

“America’s Got Talent” judge Simon Cowell just can’t help himself. At the start of 20-year-old Joseph O’Brien‘s vocal performance during the Judge Cuts 2 episode, Simon interrupted the never-been-kissed Tennessee native and made him sing another song. Joseph chose something he wrote and ended up wowing Simon, Heidi Klum, Mel B, Howie Mandel and guest judge Olivia Munn. Thanks to Simon’s rude interruption, Joseph was able to show a different side of himself and ended up advancing to the “Agt” live shows. Watch the “Americas Got Talent” performance video above, and then read the judges’ comments below.

If you were to meet Australia-born, Arizona-raised musician Gregg Turkington, you'd find a somewhat shy, easygoing 47-year-old guy, the kind of person who seems more comfortable doing voiceover work for shows like Adventure Time than baiting a paying audience. Today, Clark Kent and Lois Lane are celebrating their 19th wedding anniversary. It was on October 6, 1996 that Dean Cain’s Clark and Teri Hatcher’s Lois got married in an episode of “Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.” Three days later, DC Comics released “Superman: The Wedding Album” (an issue with a cover date of December 1996). It was the first time Lois and Clark got married in the comics for realsies. Only took them 58 years. Previous weddings had ended with “it was all a dream” or the like. Here’s the TV wedding moment that aired 19 years ago. Savor that ’90s cheese. The cause of death has not yet been determined. “Hi friends, kc here,”Guitarist Kevin Cronin wrote. “My longtime friend and collaborator Gary Richrath passed away earlier today. I feel so sad. Gary was both a unique guitarist and songwriter, and the embodiment of the tough guy with a heart of gold. I learned most of what I know about being in a rock band from Gary Richrath. From Marine Boy and Thundercats to Cities Of Gold and Akira, we look at the TV shows and movies that introduced the UK to Japanese anime
One evening in 1994, the BBC screened a documentary simply called Manga. Presented by Jonathan Ross, it showcased the rising popularity of Japanese animation, largely focusing on the output of Manga Entertainment, whose dubbed VHS releases had made a huge impact on anime fans and caused a certain amount of consternation among the mainstream press.
For British viewers, the anime boom took a long time to arrive. In America, Japanese shows like Kimba The White Lion, Gigantor and Astro Boy were a common sight on television in the 1960s, yet it took until the late 70s and 80s, and a string of European-Japanese co-productions, before anime finally began to find a hold on UK television.

After a slew of casting catastrophes and controversies, Straight Outta Compton has landed a celebrated actor in Paul Giamatti. And with this casting coup, the Nwa biopic has secured its biggest movie star. THR says Paul Giamatti has joined Straight Outta Compton. He has signed on to play Nwa manager Jerry Heller. You can see a side-to-side comparison of the pair above. Giamatti will now appear opposite a cast of unknowns, who will play DJ Yella, Dr. Dre, Eazy-e, Ice Cube and Mc Ren. It's rumored Dr. Dre and Ice Cube will make appearances as themselves in the film's resolution. Though not as well known as the Nwa crew, Jerry Heller was an established and respected taste maker in music when he took a risk on the pioneering rap group. He'd previously repped or worked with acts like Journey, Elo, Reo Speedwagon, Pink Floyd, and Elton John. With Eazy-e, Heller...

Paul Giamatti has closed a deal to star in F. Gary Gray's currently filming Nwa biopic "Straight Outta Compton" for Universal Pictures.
Giamatti will play Jerry Heller, manager of the pioneering West Coast rap group of the mid-1980s. Heller was already a major figure in the music scene who represented acts ranging form Journey to Elo to Reo Speedwagon.

Last week we showed you the teaser for Ryan Gosling’s directorial debut, Lost River, and it was a little, um, puzzling? But it definitely looked intriguing. A couple days later the movie premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, and no one likes it, basically. It has been the subject of some fantastically mean tweets and reviews. Some of the kinder reviews liken it to a student film or a practice run. Apart from calling the movie “unthinkingly offensive,” the main criticism seems to be that Gosling doesn’t have much of a voice yet, so the film feels like an inferior knockoff of other directors’ work.
One of those directors is, of course, Nicolas Winding Refn, Gosling’s bromantic partner and two time collaborator. Vulture caught up with the director at the festival and asked him what he thought of Gosling’s movie.

The Goldbergs started out its first season loud — and by loud, we mean the characters spent basically the entire pilot yelling. But the ’80s-set show ended its season on a quieter note with less yelling and more tenderness (plus great use of Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer”).
When The Goldbergs first premiered back in September, it seemed like it could just be a show serving as a vehicle for ’80s references — the pilot is crowded with mentions of Jazzercise, Brooke Shields, and Reo Speedwagon — and not much else. Willie Nelson, Cheap Trick, Heart and Barenaked Ladies also bailed in response to the film. Hitt explained his band’s decision to TMZ,...

"Blackfish" is turning out to be an extremely influential documentary. Now, the Canadian band Barenaked Ladies has canceled a concert at SeaWorld in Orlando after viewing the CNN documentary about killer whales.
Although the band had previously announced that they would perform at SeaWorld's "Bands, Brews & BBQ" event in February 2014, the Barenaked Ladies quickly faced a negative reaction from fans. An online petition quickly gained around 10,000 signatures, enough to attract Bnl's attention.
A follow-up notice on Wednesday (Nov. 27) indicated that plans had changed. The band posted a message to Bnl's official website and to Facebook reads:
Hey everybody. We've talked things over, and decided not to play at Seaworld at this time. We watch movies too, ya know! Have you seen Star Trek IV? It's quite good. Kidding ... We sometimes do that.

Ah, the ’80s — Reo Speedwagon, denim jumpsuits and the ability to call your kids morons without anyone alerting Child Protective Services. The Goldbergs (which premiered Tuesday at 9/8c on ABC) revels in all these luxuries, but did the period sitcom make you nostalgic or nauseated?
The titular family is headed up by Murray (Jeff Garlin, Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey, Rules of Engagement), parents who love their kids but often show it in the most therapy-inducing ways. Murray can’t stop yelling long enough to teach his middle son Barry (the ironically named Troy Gentile) to drive, while...

For the second coming of Jason Reitman’s (Labor Day) now infamous Live Read program to the Toronto International Film Festival, the young auteur has yet again assembled an all-star cast to tackle one of his (and everyone else’s) all-time favorite films. Paul Thomas Anderson’s Boogie Nights premiered at Tiff in the now defunct Uptown Theatre in 1997, the ensuing commotion causing an unpredicted street shutdown.
Reitman himself – his father in supportive attendance – excitedly introduced the event, declaring these reads even more fun than making actual films and announcing he and the cast would be working from a version of the original shooting script that would include select deleted scenes and alternate lines. Then our actors were introduced.
Dane Cook appeared to be at least the second-biggest fan on stage, enthusiastically delivering a spot-on Luis Guzman impression as Maurice Rodriguez, ideally timing Reed Rothchild’s lines – a scant helping...

The Way Way Back fell way way short of my expectations which I don’t think were unreasonably high: a 7.5 (out 0f 10) rating on the internet movie database, good word of mouth, and being written and directed by the Oscar-winning screenwriters from the very good The Descendants.
Were the directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, who both appear in the movie and display obvious comedic talent, to read my review, they would hopefully consider it constructive criticism, rather than an outright pan. Save for their talent, this movie could very easily find its final resting place in the just another summer movie discount bin.
The movie’s title could easily be misconstrued to refer to an earlier era, i.e. “way way back- in time” since the musical selections are from the early to mid-1980s. But that’s not what the title is referring to.

Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn's follow-up to the darkly stylish Drive is the even more violent Only God Forgives. Is he revelling in sexual brutality?
"So," asks Nicolas Winding Refn, as we sit down for lunch in a swish new place in King's Cross, London, "what was the first reaction you had to my film? What was the first thought that went through your mind?"
Not only is this a reversal of the traditional interview roles, it's also a tricky question. The film under review is Only God Forgives, the follow-up to Refn's critically acclaimed and commercially successful Drive. Imagine a Quentin Tarantino homage to oriental slasher movies but directed by David Lynch at his most elliptical and unsettling, and you might get some idea of the strangeness of Only God Forgives. ABC's comedy development has had a rough couple of seasons. The network hasn't had a real breakout since the one-two punch of family comedies "Modern Family" (an ongoing mega hit) and "The Middle" (a modest but stable hit) premiered back in 2009.
Only three comedies launched since then remain on the air: "Suburgatory," which faded enough in Season 2 to be held back for midseason next year; "Last Man Standing," which plays to a base and is otherwise ignored on Friday nights; and "The Neighbors," which will join "Last Man" in its Friday irrelevance in the fall. That means ABC needs to find a few more real players and the network has planned an aggressive launch of four new comedies in the fall and one more on the bench for midseason.
Most of them are broader, family-oriented, concepts modeled more on "Modern Family" than failures like "Happy Endings" or "Don't Trust the B----.

Tom Cruise is on lead vocals as an ageing rocker in a stage-to-screen musical that rocks to the perm-shaking Eighties sounds of Styx, Reo Speedwagon, Journey, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison and Whitesnake. It's Hollywood in 1987 and a smalltown girl (Julianne Hough) falls for a young muso (Diego Boneta) while working in a muso dive. Also raising a tune are Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta Jones and Paul Giamatti.

Chicago – We live in such a cynical world that when a film critic tells you a stand-up comedian is damn funny, it might not hold as much weight as it did in a universe before everyone had an opinion on everything online. So how can I convince you that Eddie Pepitone, the subject of Stephen Feinartz’s “The Bitter Buddha,” opening this weekend at the Music Box Theatre in Chicago, is damn funny? Do you like Marc Maron, Sarah Silverman, Dana Gould, or the amazing Patton Oswalt? They think he’s hilarious. And if that doesn’t do it, the movie will. Just trust us.
Eddie Pepitone is a comedian’s comedian, a guy who other funny people know and respect but who simply hasn’t broken out beyond the critical and comedic communities. Someone compares the record sales of Reo Speedwagon to that of Elvis Costello, noting that...

You almost need to see Dave Grohl's documentary "Sound City" with headphones on. That's the best way to pick up the nuances the legions of legendary musicians are talking about in this ratty old recording studio where some of the greatest rock records ever made were cut from the 1970s through the '90s.
When Grohl, drummer with Nirvana and later Foo Fighters frontman, and other drummers such as Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac) talk about the presence, the unique sound that drums carried out of this dump of a studio in Van Nuys, Calif., headphones are the best way to sample that difference, that analog "oomph" that Sound City gave them.
And as Fleetwood, Grohl and the others -- from Tom Petty and Kevin Cronin (Reo Speedwagon) to Rick Springfield and Neil Young -- will tell you, if you get the drums right, the rest just falls into place.

Who wants to see Steve Carell be an insufferable jerk? That's just one of the many notable qualities in The Way, Way Back, a new indie comedy from actors and writers Nat Faxon ("Ben & Kate") and Jim Rash ("Community"), who are also making their directorial debut. Carell's role, though supporting, is where our story really begins as his chastising of his girlfriend's (Toni Collete) teenage son Duncan (Liam James) for being a 3 out of 10 as a person resonates with him and spitefully inspires a summer adventure that will change his life. And what better place to learn the ropes of life then a local waterpark with a colorful cast of supporting characters that includes a scene-stealing Sam Rockwell, Maya Rudolph and more. Read on! Duncan is a socially awkward, shy, teenage boy sometimes found poorly singing Reo Speedwagon out loud. Shuffling around a summer house in a coastal ...

Sony Music has been hit with more litigation over the way artists are compensated whenever consumers buy songs on iTunes and other digital outlets. Late last week, separate lawsuits were filed in New York federal court by Reo Speedwagon and William "Boz" Scaggs. Both plaintiffs say that Sony has breached recording contracts by counting digital downloads as "sales" rather than "leases" or "licenses." As a result of this accounting treatment, the artists allege they haven't been paid appropriately. The royalty rate on a sale is around 15 percent compared to a "license/lease" which is 50 percent. If you've heard Dean Winchester's off-key singing voice on "Supernatural," wailing to Bon Jovi and Reo Speedwagon songs, you might not guess that Jensen Ackles can actually carry a tune -- but he totally can!
Don't worry -- he's got no designs on a music career of his own, so his day job of hunting demons is safe for now.

The Broadway show .Rock of Ages. by Chris D.Arienzo was critically and commercially well-received garnering five 2009 Tony Award nominations including Best Musical. Using popular arena rock and power ballads of the 80s, .Rock of Ages. simply rocked. The new movie adaptation follows the formula of the stage show. The result is an all-out music extravaganza that will rock you like a hurricane.
Like the musical, the characters of the movie are clichéd and the plot is formulaic. But the cast is great, the music is superb, and director Adam Shankman wants to give you nothing but a good time. And at its center is the scene-stealing Tom Cruise as the rock god, Stacee Jaxx. He alone is worth the price of admission.

In the last couple of years, a spate of films, from Joe Cornish's "Attack The Block" to J.J. Abrams' "Super 8," have named one film as a particular influence: Richard Donner's "The Goonies," the 1985 kids' adventure film that served as part of the 1980s golden age of Amblin, Steven Spielberg's production company. Following a group of working class kids from the 'Goon Docks' of Astoria, Oregon, on one last adventure before their homes are demolished, only to end up on a quest, and pursued by a vicious criminal family, the Fratellis, the film is a rollicking adventure that also had a particular feel for the friendships between kids.
Providing early introductions to people like Josh Brolin, Martha Plimpton, Corey Feldman and Sean Astin, the film's become an enduring family favorite, and as the kids who grew up on it have become directors themselves, its reputation has only grown.
