In the middle of August this year, three legends of the music industry died within 72 hours of each other: founder of A&m Records Jerry Moss; music lawyer Abe Somer; and my father, the “Black Godfather” himself, Clarence Avant. These three men helped define the recording industry of the past six decades, and what’s more, they were inseparable best friends.
Somer, Moss, and Avant met in New York City in the early 1960s, and in the six decades since, never left one another’s side, never once let their “soul contract” expire.

Diamond Sports Group has requested an extension for turning in its debt resolution plan to a bankruptcy court judge, but Directv thinks the broadcaster has had time enough.
Diamond Sports Group’s (Dsg) creditors are running out of patience. The company asked for an extension for its debt reorganization plan from bankruptcy Judge Christopher Lopez at the end of September, which drew an immediate protest from Major League Baseball.
Directv has also objected to Diamond’s request for more time to craft a plan to climb out of debt. The satellite provider is concerned with Dsg’s lack of progress since entering Chapter 11 protections in March. The main objection from Directv stems from the fact that it is being asked to keep paying for content that no longer appears on Bally Sports channels. 5-Day Free Trial $74.99+ / month directv.com/stream

Exclusive: Permut Presentations and Merkaba Media Group have acquired the rights to Cheryl Diamond’s Nowhere Girl: A Memoir of a Fugitive Childhood which follows the author’s true story of being born a fugitive.
By the age of nine, Diamond had lived in more than a dozen countries, on five continents, under six assumed identities. She was home-schooled by her parents who were evading law enforcement and constantly on the run. While frequently changing identities and moving to different continents/countries was the norm for her growing up – as she got older, she began to realize that her life itself might be a big con. Surviving required her to escape from her family.
The team are currently exploring writers and directors as possibilities in adapting this story as a series.

It has been a difficult year for Diamond Sports Group (Dsg), not only did the broadcaster officially file for bankruptcy protection in March, but since then, it has forfeited the rights to broadcast San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks games and is increasingly raising the ire of Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred who would like to see his league take over all of the rights held by the embattled regional sports network (Rsn) provider.
While Dsg has been going through the process of trying to establish a new sustainable — and eventually profitable —business model, it has filed multiple motions and petitions in court, but it’s the latest filing that might be the most surprising.
NextTV is reporting that on Wednesday, paperwork was filed in the Houston bankruptcy court overseeing the proceedings that indicate that Dsg is suing its parent company Sinclair Broadcast Group (Sbg) and multiple members of its executive team.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are departing from Bally Sports Arizona. John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal reports that while a U.S. bankruptcy court hearing to officially settle the matter of the Diamondbacks’ rights was pushed from Monday, July 17 to Tuesday, July 18, the team was not able to reach a new agreement with Bally Sports’ parent company Diamond Sports Group (Dsg). When the hearing does take place, it is expected that Dsg will file to reject the team’s contract.
MLB will then take over broadcasts of the team’s games, as it did in May for the San Diego Padres. The league filed a statement with bankruptcy court Judge Christopher Lopez last week declaring that it was ready to do so, having made arrangements with local cable providers to ensure no interruptions in Diamondbacks broadcasts. It’s also likely that MLB will make Diamondbacks games available to stream locally...

July 15 has come and gone, and the Cincinnati Reds are still available on Bally Sports Ohio. The Reds had been due a broadcasting rights payment by Bally Sports’ parent company Diamond Sports Group (Dsg) on the 15th, and ESPN baseball reporter Alden Gonzalez Tweeted late last week that the company expected to make its payment on time.
Source: Diamond Sports Group plans to make its next scheduled payment to the Reds and will thus keep them as part of the Bally Sports umbrella for the foreseeable future.
Diamond faced a July 15 deadline, with non-payments expected to result in MLB taking over (like w/ Padres).

While regional sports networks — in L.A., think Spectrum SportsNet LA for the Dodgers — aren’t dead yet, the ripple effect of their business model challenges are already being felt across the TV ecosystem. But the game is in the early innings.
RSNs, the pay TV channels built around live local sports, mostly featuring teams in the NBA, MLB or NHL, usually have full slates of programming. But, of course, it’s the live games that are key, and fans within local markets can watch them all only if they have access to an Rsn via cable or satellite providers.
A sea change is being driven by cord-cutting, which has put the pinch on Rsn finances. While some bigger-market RSNs are staying the course for now, many others are challenged. Warner Bros. Discovery, for example, told its league partners that it wants to exit the space (it owns RSNs in Colorado,...

It is an uncertain time for anyone working in regional sports broadcasting, as the ongoing glut of cord-cutting is turning the economic prospects for the entire industry on their head. Regional sports networks (RSNs) are shuttering and parent companies are going through bankruptcy proceedings as broadcast and streaming rights are being shifted from cable channels to broadcast networks, and teams and leagues are taking back rights that had previously been licensed to failing media companies.
One of the more interesting developments in the ongoing collapse of RSNs has been that teams have been increasingly signing rights deals with local, over-the-air broadcast networks. The LA Clippers announced a deal to air a handful of games on Ktla ahead of last NBA season, the WNBA signed a deal to air Friday night games on Ion, and the NHL’s reigning Stanley Cup champion Vegas Golden Knights will broadcast all non-nationally televised games...

Once again, Diamond Sports Group (Dsg) has beaten the throw home and is safe at the plate. According to Crain's Cleveland, Dsg —which owns all 19 Bally Sports-branded channels — has officially made its broadcasting rights payment to the Cleveland Guardians that was due on July 1, which ensures the team’s games will remain on the Bally Sports Great Lakes regional sports network (Rsn) for the rest of the month.
Currently, cord cutters can find Bally Sports Great Lakes on Directv Stream and Fubo. None of the other live TV streaming services offer Bally Sports RSNs at this time. If the Guardians had not received their payment from Dsg, the team’s broadcasts would have been taken over by Major League Baseball. Dsg has been in bankruptcy proceedings since March, when it first filed for Chapter 11 protections.

The Creative Diversity Network’s sixth annual report on inclusivity in the U.K. TV industry reveals a generally sorry state of affairs with some sparks of progress.
The report analyzes data collected through the Diamond diversity monitoring system, used by the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Paramount (which owns U.K. broadcaster Channel 5), UKTV and Sky to obtain consistent diversity data on programs they commission, revealing several areas of concern within the industry, particularly in off-screen and senior roles.
A significant finding is that women are making fewer contributions compared to four years ago, primarily due to a decline in senior roles. The number of female writers and directors remains alarmingly low, contributing to the overall decrease. Disabled individuals and individuals from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (Bame) backgrounds also continue to be underrepresented in senior positions, while craft roles remain largely segregated.

The proportion of women in senior roles in UK TV has dipped alarmingly since the Covid-19 pandemic, with women making up just a quarter of writers and one third of directors during the past year.
In eyebrow-raising stats unveiled in diversity data monitor Diamond’s latest report, representation of women in senior roles was shown to have dropped every year for the past four years to 45.4%, with the largest fall coming during the main pandemic year while male representation remained pretty stable. “This suggests that men were less likely to be leaving the workforce during the pandemic, and that women have failed to return to senior roles,” said the Sixth Cut report from the UK’s Creative Diversity Network (Cdn), which publishes Diamond.

“American Gladiators” aired in the 1990’s, but the competition still remains a phenomenon decades later. Last month, ESPN’s “30 for 30” explored the show, and now, Netflix is getting into the game.
Netflix’s five-part docuseries, “Muscles & Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of ‘American Gladiators,” dives into the hit, chronicling the meteoric rise and sweeping impact the superhero-like athletes had on both fans across America and their “average Joe” competitors.
Co-directors Jared Hess and Tony Vainuku were fans of “American Gladiators” as teens, so it was natural to revisit the TV show when Netflix presented the opportunity. In their series, the filmmakers explore the good, the bad and the ugly, bringing audiences insight through access to executives who greenlit the production in the ’80s, original crew members and gladiators, including Nitro (Dan Clark), Storm (Debbie Clark), Diamond (Erika Andersch Bunker), Laser (Jim Kalafat), Ice (Lori Fetrick), Zap (Raye Olson), Blaze...
