At its heart, Sundance is about discovery. Some of our brightest, biggest filmmaking stars — we’re talking Steven Soderbergh, Richard Linklater, Ava DuVernay, Paul Thomas Anderson, Lulu Wang, Ryan Coogler, Aubrey Plaza, Catherine Hardwicke, Todd Haynes, Tessa Thompson, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Eggers, the Duplass brothers, Michael B. Jordan, Amy Adams, Elizabeth Olsen, Brie Larson, Lakeith Stanfield, Miles Teller, Anya Taylor-Joy, and many, many more — first rose to acclaim by bringing their work to Sundance.
Some of the biggest films at this year’s festivals came to us through creators and stars we already know and love — it’s no surprise that Jesse Eisenberg and Kieran Culkin are so wonderful in Eisenberg’s “A Real Pain” or that “Worst Person in the World” star Renate Reinsve finds new dimension in both pitch-black comedy “A Different Man” and the off-kilter zombie drama “Handling the Undead” or that Kristen Stewart is riveting in...

Ava DuVernay has only made five narrative features, but she’s one of the busiest women in Hollywood.
Before 2023, the California-born filmmaker’s last feature was her “A Wrinkle in Time” adaptation, released in theaters in 2018 — a five-year gap between releases that’s partially attributable to projects that sputtered in development like DC’s “New Gods” film and a Prince biopic. And yet, DuVernay has remained a constant presence during that relatively long gap, translating her numerous talents to producing and TV work. She created and directed the acclaimed Netflix miniseries “When They See Us,” about the controversial Central Park Five case. Several other TV projects followed, including OWN’s “Cherish the Day,” Netflix’s “Colin in Black and White,” and The CW’s “Naomi.” But while many of those projects have been terrific, it’s great to see the director of great films like “Middle of Nowhere” and “Selma...

Adam Sandler is questioning his life’s purpose in space with Netflix’s romance drama “Spaceman.”
Sandler, who has an overall Happy Madison production deal with the streaming platform, leads the upcoming feature from “Chernobyl” director Johan Renck. Based on the novel “Spaceman of Bohemia,” the film follows an astronaut (Sandler) who worries that his tenuous marriage may be on the brink of collapse while he’s in space.
Colby Day adapted the novel for the screen, with Channing Tatum and producing partner Reid Carolin behind the upcoming film, along with fellow producers Peter Kiernan, Michael Parets, Tim Headington, Lia Buman, and Max Silva. Director Renck, Ben Ormand, and Barry Bernardi executive produce.
The official synopsis reads: “Six months into a solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, an astronaut, Jakub (Sandler), realizes that the marriage he left behind might not be waiting for him when he returns to Earth.

The 2023 Primetime Emmys actually took place in 2024 — namely, today, January 15, 2024 — after a delay courtesy of the since-ended strikes.
TV’s best gathered for the long-long-awaited awards ceremony at the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, as hosted by “Black-ish” star Anthony Anderson. Those who watched at home missed out on expletives bleeped and moments cut from the telecast, but IndieWire’s Marcus Jones was live in the room to round up what you didn’t see.

Paul Giamatti has won the Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy Golden Globe for “The Holdovers.”
The acclaimed Alexander Payne film featured some of Giamatti’s best-ever work, which is saying something, given that his previous team-up with Payne on “Sideways” is considered one of the best performances of the century to date. But his Paul Hunham, an irascible Western Civilization teacher whose life is in thrall to antiquity, captured the hearts of viewers and Globe voters. The film, set at a New England boarding school in 1970, actually felt like one of the New Hollywood classics Payne was obviously aspiring for it to be.
This is Giamatti’s third Golden Globe win after picking up trophies for “John Adams” and “Barney’s Version.” In addition to his three Golden Globe wins, he also has been nominated three other times, for “Sideways,” “Cinderella Man,” and “Too Big to Fail.

Cillian Murphy has won Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama at the Golden Globes for “Oppenheimer.” Read the full Golden Globes winners list here.
The award boosts the 47-year-old Irish actor’s momentum in the Oscar race considerably, and helps to power Christopher Nolan’s film to official juggernaut status. IndieWire’s Awards Editor, Film and TV, Marcus Jones had already listed him as a frontrunner for Best Actor at the Academy Awards alongside Bradley Cooper (“Maestro”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Colman Domingo (“Rustin”), and Paul Giamatti (“The Holdovers”).
This was not the first time Murphy had been nominated for a Golden Globe, however. He was previously nominated as Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for “Breakfast on Pluto” in 2006.
Murphy has been a longtime collaborator of director Nolan, appearing in “Batman Begins,” “The Dark Knight,” “Inception,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” and “Dunkirk.” But “Oppenheimer,...

Films are stunning artifacts of humanity’s singular ability to dream and wonder in unison. But if the moviemaking miracles produced by Hollywood’s studio system are predestined — recycled IP inevitabilities that cost as much money as there are stars in the sky — indies are something greater.
Indie filmmaking is notoriously hard to define; combine the constantly shifting number known as “low budget” and another shifty goalpost, “independent,” and we’re partly there. Here’s another definition: It feels as if it’s willed into existence, both in the final story on screen and in the behind-the-scenes journey that explains how an auteur’s story got there. It was created because it had to be, rendered by talented and undaunted auteurs, through powerful visions and innovative commitment to craft. And finally, it’s introduced to equally ambitious audiences.

It’s not too late to pick up a thoughtful gift for the people in your life, and that includes film distributors. While much of Hollywood is shutting down in advance of the holidays, plenty of cinema-loving elves are still toiling away in hopes of seeing their (very deserving) films land underneath the metaphorical tree.
And there are plenty of gifts to share, because even as the distribution landscape continues to shift and shape with startling regularity, some of the year’s most interesting and unique cinematic efforts are still looking for a home. In fact, we’ve got 18 of them wrapped and ready to go.

The great Joni Mitchell once wrote, “You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone,” which certainly applied to acting in 2023. Of course, actors didn’t disappear this year. They were just far less visible for a while. The SAG strike — lasting from mid-July to early November — was an eye-opening necessity, protecting the guild from the studios’ ghastly attempts to implement artificial intelligence and correcting issues like lost wages and residuals that stemmed from the “great” streaming disruption.
But if you would’ve told me a year ago I’d be lamenting the loss of all those red carpets, publicity junkets, and various press appearances actors bravely embark upon for their art, I would’ve laughed in your face — and then I would have apologized for laughing in your face, and explained, slowly and assuredly, that “No, I would never miss the scourge of half-formed quotes and...

IndieWire’s longtime commitment to highlighting boundary-pushing documentary filmmaking reached new heights this fall during the inaugural Art of the Doc screening series. Presented in partnership with National Geographic, Art of the Doc showcased six of the best nonfiction films of 2023 at the Landmark Westwood in Los Angeles. Each screening featured in-person conversations with filmmakers and documentary subjects moderated by IndieWire editors.

When it really wants to, Netflix does a great job at letting people know what TV shows it has to offer. Unfortunately, with the never-ending wave of new shows constantly arriving, high-profile creators on the creative roster, and shifts in the streaming wars and algorithms that can upend viewer attention at any moment, there always seem to be series that fall between the cracks.
To go with the ever-growing list of reviews that we publish on the site on a regular basis (including new releases worth your time), IndieWire combed through Netflix to put together a collection of the best series that the streamer has ever had to offer: a perfect resource for when there’s nothing fresh you really fancy. Updated: With the fall festivals behind us — we’re talking the triple whammy of Venice, Telluride, and Toronto, plus the just-wrapped New York Film Festival and BFI London — we’re taking stock of the best films of the circuit. While it’s always easy to use the fall festivals as a window into this year’s awards contenders, of which many debuted over the past few weeks, the festivals have also provided us with some of the best films of 2023, full stop.
These standouts include new films from perennial favorites like Hayao Miyazaki, Errol Morris, Bertrand Bonello, Yorgos Lanthimos, Kitty Green, Andrew Haigh, Bill and Turner Ross, and Alexander Payne. Rising stars aren’t in short supply either, including first and second narrative features from TIFF winner Cord Jefferson, Annie Baker, and Kristoffer Borgli. Amongst this selection, words like “gem,” “masterpiece,” and “crowd-pleaser” are thrown around with regularity, but not without real consideration.

The Golden Globes continue to reform in unexpected ways: The rejiggered organization has introduced two new categories to its live awards show in January. While Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television is a bit more traditional, following the lead of the Emmys and the Grammys in having a dedicated category for stand-up comedy specials released on a recognized media platform, the other award builds upon a controversial premise first put forward by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2018.
The Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement will include nominees from the year’s most acclaimed, highest-earning and/or most viewed films that have extensive global audience support. Eligibility will be measured by a mix of box office grosses and commensurate digital streaming viewership recognized by trusted industry sources. As Hollywood grinds to a halt with the ongoing WGA strike and potential SAG-AFTRA strike, the 2023 Emmy nominations were announced as planned on July 12. Television Academy Chair Frank Scherma and actor Yvette Nicole Brown presented the nominations live from Los Angeles.
This year’s Emmys follow a spate of TV finales from acclaimed series like “Succession,” “Barry,” “Ted Lasso,” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” all of which concluded at the end of May, just in time for the May 31 deadline. Unlike previous years, hanging episodes that air after this deadline — whether or not they add up to a critical mass — would disqualify a show from eligibility in 2023. The season also saw shakeups in the Variety Series categories, as well as shows like “Jury Duty” and “The Rehearsal,” which challenged the boundaries of scripted and unscripted television.
For those following IndieWire’s Awards Predictions, some categories shook out exactly as editor Marcus Jones expected.

The countdown until one of TV’s biggest nights is underway with the 2023 Emmy Awards nominations being announced today, July 12.
“Community” alum Yvette Nicole Brown and Television Academy Chair Frank Scherma will unveil the list of nominees during a live-streamed event on the official Emmys website. Starting at 11:30 a.m. Et/8:30 a.m. Pt, Brown and Scherma will announce the honorees for the 75th Emmy Awards. You can also stream the nominations presentation via YouTube below.
This year’s Emmys will take place Monday, September 18 at 8 p.m. Et/5 p.m. Pt. Fans can watch the live awards show on Fox — though that date could ostensibly change in the event of a dual-union strike with SAG joining the WGA, where a SAG work stoppage would prohibit talent from participating in publicity activities and premieres — and red carpets. However, SAG-AFTRA hasn’t declared publicly the full restrictions for members during a strike.

The first half of the year has already shown that moviegoers now have a very high bar for any kind of franchise films, while original concepts like “Past Lives” have done even better than expected. The “Barbie”/”Oppenheimer” dichotomy coming midway into the year has driven the conversation around what...

Ever since premiering in July 2020 — in the heart of a pandemic that shuttered the very strip clubs it depicts — Starz’ “P-Valley” has been one of the most consistently subversive and provocative shows on television. The drama, which Katori Hall adapted from her play “Pussy Valley,” follows an ensemble of adult performers making ends meet at The Pynk strip club in the fictional town of Chucalissa, Mississippi. The series was notable for its three-dimensional portrayal of sex work — which was shaped by its all-female creative team — as well as its charming cast and endlessly fabulous costume design.
By the time Season 2 premiered, the series had built up a passionate fan base that was eager to see what their favorite diverse group of strippers was up to. At IndieWire’s Consider This Event in Los Angeles on Saturday, “P-Valley” stars Nicco Annan (Uncle Clifford), Brandee Evans (Mercedes), and J. Alphonse Nicholson (Lil Murda...

In May, the Cannes Film Festival injects a jolt of international cinema into year ahead, and expectations are even greater than usual this time around. In 2022, Cannes was the starting point for everything from future commercial hits “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Elvis” to arthouse successes like “Decision to Leave” and “Eo.” With less pandemic-era stagnation on productions, there are more newly finished (or almost finished) Cannes hopefuls in the mix than anytime in recent memory.
Some of the bigger ones have been widely reported: We already know that Martin Scorsese’s sprawling Osage Nation crime drama “Killers of the Flower Moon” will bring the revered director back to the festival with Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro in tow, while “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” is poised to premiere in an out-of-competition slot 15 years after the last entry did the same thing. Another day, another problem for Twitter under the patronage of Elon Musk.
The social media site has come under fire from Variance Films, the distributor behind S.S. Rajamouli’s Tollywood blockbuster “Rrr.” The film is currently in the final stretch of an Oscar campaign for “Naatu Naatu,” its musical number that received a nod for Best Original Song. IndieWire’s Marcus Jones currently has the song, which was written by Kaala Bhairava, M.M. Keeravani, and Rahul Sipligunj, listed as the frontrunner to win the Academy Award.
With voting closing in a matter of weeks and many movie fans trying to catch up on films they missed from last year, Variance is attempting to pull out all the stops by advertising “Rrr” as much as possible. But the company claims that it is unable to feature clips of “Naatu Naatu” in Twitter ads because the scene is performed in Telugu, which...

Curated by the IndieWire editorial team, Craft Considerations is a video platform for filmmakers to discuss how they applied their craft to a recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. For this edition, we look at how “Nope” actress Keke Palmer collaborated with writer-director Jordan Peele to bring the funny, tenacious Emerald to life in the sci-fi horror blockbuster.
Keke Palmer was still learning just exactly who her “Nope” character Emerald was when she shot her memorable entrance, a rollicking run-through of how her family company has serviced Hollywood since the industry’s earliest days.
“It was so funny, because that was not in the original script. That was something that I ended up seeing five days before we started shooting,” the star told IndieWire. “I was just like, ‘When the hell did you put this in here?’”

For this edition, we look at how “The Fabelmans” screenwriter Tony Kushner collaborated with Steven Spielberg to tell a story that was deeply personal for both of them.
In 2005, screenwriter Tony Kushner was sitting with Steven Spielberg on the set of their first film together, “Munich.” It was the night shooting began, and Kushner casually asked Spielberg when he realized that he wanted to be a filmmaker. “He told me about the films he made as a little kid, and at some point he told me the story of the camping trip,” Kushner told IndieWire. When looking through a given year’s best movies and shows, it’s helpful for a writer to find connections among the prominent picks. Perhaps this was a year where studio fare stood tall, or indie darlings broke big. Maybe 2022 saw an uptick in stories about burgeoning fascism or very good donkeys. Heck, even taking note of broader trends — like the potential resurgence of theatrical motion pictures or the possible end of streaming content boom — can give a list a sense of purpose or clarity.
But when it comes to our picks for the best LGBTQ movies and shows in 2022, what’s refreshing to notice is the lack of commonalities. Comedies like “Bros” and “Fire Island” were given major release platforms courtesy of Universal and Searchlight, respectively. Dramatic fare like “Benediction” and “The Inspection” rode festival buzz and critical praise to leave their mark. This year’s top awards contenders are queer,...

Editor’s Note: While some series may have ended in 2021 they weren’t officially canceled until 2022 and thus are included on this list.
Too often canceled series are abruptly cast to the winds, unable to wrap up storylines and character arcs. But 2022 felt different. Several prominent shows, including “Atlanta,” “Better Things,” and “The Good Fight,” were told by their respective networks their end had come, so were given the chance to wrap things up. This year’s list of best canceled series tried to focus on shows that weren’t given that kindness.
Series that, for one reason or another, never got an opportunity to get off the ground in spite of having more than one season to tell a story. In some instances, like with “The Flight Attendant,” “Kevin Can F Himself,” or “Gentleman Jack,” they had more than one season—as well as significant delays between their first...

One of the most satisfying aspects of any year in entertainment is looking back on what we’ve learned — specifically, looking back on who we’ve learned about. Spread across every arbitrary set of 365 days are fresh faces, distinct personalities, and remarkable talents to recognize; skilled actors whose recent emergence all but guarantees we’ll get to see more of them in the future. How exciting! What luck — for them, and for us!
But such discoveries can, at times, be far too restricted. Whether the performance was given in a film or TV show that didn’t reach the audience it deserved, or the eye of the culture was attuned to something or someone else, and overlooked an important discovery right under its nose, that’s where we come in. IndieWire has gathered a list of 14 breakout performances from 2022, spanning film and television. Some you’ve certainly heard of already.

Choosing the best TV episodes is very different from choosing the best TV.
The best episodes might be outstanding hours of shows that fluctuate in quality, or a pivotal character moment or story beat that contextualizes everything else. Sometimes the best episode is part of an almost embarrassing bounty — just one of many consistently brilliant installments in a TV show that blew away both audiences and critics.
IndieWire’s look at the best TV episodes of 2022 is all those things, populated by our usual suspects of top 2022 TV as well as hours we couldn’t forget and shows we gladly binged in a weekend. There is drama, there is comedy, there is literal “Euphoria.” This list has it all. What it doesn’t have, however, is more than one episode from the same show, in an effort to spread the wealth.

IndieWire’s Consider This FYC Brunch returned on Friday, celebrating six of the films you’ll be hearing about during the 2022-2023 awards season. Above and below the line talent from “Thirteen Lives,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” “Louis Armstrong’s Black & Blues,” “Causeway,” “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” and “Bardo, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths” all participated in panels moderated by IndieWire editors to discuss what went into the dazzling images audiences see on the screen.
“Elevating artisans and craftspeople is, if you don’t mind me saying so, one of the things that IndieWire does best,” IndieWire editor-in-chief Dana Harris-Brisdon said in her opening remarks.
Throughout the day, these artists opened up about the labor intensive process of making great cinema. In their quest to achieve that special creative edge that separates them from the competition, every detail counts. Panelists from all six films emphasized that...

When it premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival, “Causeway” attracted plenty of attention for helping to relaunch Jennifer Lawrence’s acting career. By the actress’ own admission, she had begun to feel trapped by the big franchise roles that made her a superstar at such a young age. She sought a second act defined by smaller, more character-driven films like “Causeway,” which she also developed through her production company, Excellent Cadaver.
But any effect that “Causeway” had on Lawrence’s career arc is only a small part of the film’s impact. Telling the story of an Army Corps engineer who suffers a brain injury while serving in Afghanistan, the film has been praised by critics as one of the best films about traumatized veterans adapting to civilian life in recent memory.

Few films in the 21st century have made as large of a cultural impact as “Black Panther.” A sequel was inevitable, but Chadwick Boseman’s tragic death put the creative team in a seemingly impossible position. How do you continue a franchise without its titular star?
As part of IndieWire’s Consider This FYC Brunch November 18, “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” producer Nate Moore and costume designer Ruth E. Carter joined IndieWire’s Marcus Jones for a conversation about bringing the fictional African nation of Wakanda to life once again.
“Making this movie was a way for us to process our own grief,” Moore said. “And we knew it would be a way for the audience to mourn this character and this actor they loved so much as well.”
Boseman, and his character King T’Challa, is felt throughout “Wakanda Forever.” But the filmmakers decided an outright funeral scene was needed.

“Stranger Things” is set to end with its highly anticipated final season. And while creators Matt and Ross Duffer remain tight-lipped about how their hit science-fiction TV show will conclude, they have promised an emotional conclusion to the show.

Countless Americans love to unwind by watching true crime shows, choosing to turn off their brains by learning about heinous serial killers and other violent criminals. But while that kind of dark escapism has its place for many viewers, the people who work on true crime shows often feel very differently.
Count Evan Peters in that camp. The actor has recently earned strong reviews for playing Jeffrey Dahmer in Ryan Murphy’s blockbuster Netflix series about the vicious serial killer. But while playing Dahmer may have been the role of a lifetime, Peters was ready to move on when the cameras stopped rolling.
Appearing on a Netflix panel to promote the series on Saturday, Peters revealed that staying in the headspace of the lethal serial killer took a toll on his mental health. By the time he was done shooting, the last thing he wanted to do was watch other true crime shows.

Following a Los Angeles premiere Wednesday night, first reactions to “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” are pouring in. Critics have applauded writer/director Ryan Coogler’s MCU installment that both honors the late Chadwick Boseman’s legacy while introducing new characters into the epic world of Wakanda.
Wednesday’s premiere screenings were split between the Dolby and El Capitan theater across the street. Along with the cast and crew, the Dolby brought in everyone from Quinta Brunson and Sheryl Lee Ralph to Chloe x Halle and Daveed Diggs. Marvel stars like Simu Liu, Kumail Nanjiani, and Iman Vellani also turned out for the world premiere, along with directors (MCU and non-mcu alike) Destin Daniel Cretton, Gina Prince-Bythewood, David Lowery, Rian Johnson, and Steve Caple Jr. Audiences cheered for every character intro, especially for newcomer Tenoch Huerta as Namor, and for Dominique Thorne.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power,” Amazon’s sprawling addition to J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary fantasy saga, is only a month away from its Prime Video debut. And with the biggest geek culture event of the year taking place in San Diego this weekend, Amazon wasted no time in releasing another trailer. The new footage provides fans with an even clearer look at Amazon’s take on the Middle Earth, and the important ways that it differs from Peter Jackson’s beloved take on the material.
Stephen Colbert introduced the trailer at 2022 Comic Con which showcased Balrog, the infamous villain from the Tolkien novels.
The 450 million series, which has already been picked up for a full five seasons, is one of the biggest financial gambles in the history of television. As competition between streaming services heats up, Amazon has increasingly doubled down on sci-fi and fantasy series.

Those 135,000 folks flying into San Diego from various countries to line up for hours to see their fave stars at Comic-Con might be greatly upset to learn that not all panels are live and in-person.
The crowds are real, but some panelists are being beamed in via satellite.
Deadline has learned that today’s panels for ABC’s The Rookie and Abbott Elementary will have moderators in-person but with their casts beamed in via satellite. The actors reportedly are unable to make it to Sdcc because their series are in production.

Ballots are out. Voting is open. The 2022 Emmy Awards are officially up for grabs, as networks, studios, and stars vie for TV’s highest honor. With more contenders in nearly every major category, this year is poised to be a particularly tight race to join.
So let’s make it a bit easier. Below, IndieWire’s Marcus Jones and Ben Travers (Deputy Editor and Critic) have filled out a joint dream ballot, stocked with worthy options for voters to consider. These are critical favorites, under-the-radar gems, and personal picks that just might expand a field that tends to get stagnate.
Now, before anyone takes their complaints to Twitter — “Where’s ‘Succession’?” “What about ‘Ted Lasso'”? — last year’s top winners were taken off the table in order to include more space for unproven programs and performers. In general, we tried to steer away from too many frontrunners, though a few...

The cast and creators of YouTube’s Origin landed at San Diego Comic-Con to give the confab the first look at the show which is a mash-up of Lost, Alien, and Invasion of the Body Snatchers to tell a multi-layered sci-fi treat.
“I don’t think Origin isn’t just one thing — it’s many different things,” said show creator Mika Wika Watkins. She says that its exciting that she gets to write a sci-fi show, but it jumps to different genres, exploring the Japanese mafia, German noir, and even a Vr love story.
The first trailer dropped before the panel (watch above) and says, “This is a new world, where your history no longer has any relevance.” And if I’m being honest, it is an unexpected impressive thrill. Based on the trailer alone, YouTube is coming through with some sci-fi realness.
