NEW YORK -- Jeanne Tripplehorn, Sigourney Weaver and J.K. Simmons are joining actor Tim Allen in his directorial debut, the ex-con comedy "Crazy on the Outside".
Allen will play a newly released prisoner who tries to persuade his single-mom parole officer (Tripplehorn) to date him. His struggle to rebuild his life is further complicated by a loving but manipulative older sister (Weaver) and her sarcastic, taunting husband (Simmons).
Ray Liotta, Kelsey Grammer and Julie Bowen also star in the film, which reunites Allen with his "Galaxy Quest" co-star Weaver and draws some parallels to his own experience as an ex-con. (He served time for cocaine possession.)
Judd Pillot and John Peaslee penned the screenplay.
Brett Gregory, Brian Reilly and Anastasia Stanecki are producing the independently financed feature for Allen's Boxing Cat Prods. Richard Baker and Justin Moritt are executive producing.
Tripplehorn (HBO's "Big Love") is repped by Gersh and Brillstein Entertainment Partners. Weaver is repped by UTA. Simmons ("Juno") is repped by Gersh.

After years of mugging for the camera, Tim Allen finally is sitting in the feature director's chair.
Allen will direct, as well as star in, an adult comedy titled Crazy on the Outside. Ray Liotta, Carrie-Anne Moss, Julie Bowen and Kelsey Grammer are in negotiations to also star.
The indie feature, written by Judd Pilot and John Peaslee, follows a ex-con who finds his life outside of prison to be much crazier, especially once he enters his sister's world.
Brian Reilly, Brett Gregory, Richard Baker and Anastasia Stanecki are producing the indie, which is being financed privately.
Justin Moritt, the unit production manager on such films as I Am Legend and Hitch, is exec producing.
Allen directed one episode of his 1990s sitcom Home Improvement, but Crazy will be his feature helming debut.
He next will be seen in Redbelt, written and directed by David Mamet, which opens April 25. He also stars in the indie ensemble comedy The Six Wives of Henry Lefay and will reprise his voice role as Buzz Lightyear for Toy Story 3.
Allen is repped by WMA and Messina/Baker Entertainment.
