Will Ferrell is reportedly being eyed to take on the role of John Madden in David O. Russell’s feature on the NFL star.
The feature, which is set to be directed by Russell, tells the story of one of the larger-than-life personalities to grace an NFL sideline. All Madden ever wanted was to be a head coach and he was one of the best ever. After winning the Super Bowl, the stress of the job began to destroy him. It forced him away from his dream job, and the film focuses on his friendship with Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis, and how Madden found a second act that made him far more famous.
Madden helped changed the videogame landscape when he became the figurehead for Madden NFL, a perennial top seller that this Autumn gets its 24th incarnation through Electronic Arts.

Exclusive: Will Ferrell is in huddling to star as the NFL’s John Madden in Madden, a theatrical feature to be directed for Amazon/MGM by five-time Oscar nominee David O. Russell (American Hustle), multiple sources tell Deadline.
Amazon had no comment.
The project has been percolating for some time. It is based on a Black List script by Cambron Clark, and Russell had been doing a rewrite when everything stopped with the writer’s strike.

Rounding up the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood, as voted on by hundreds of film executives, The Black List has been a strong resource to clue one in on projects to potentially anticipate, but first, to kickstart Hollywood on bringing them to screen. Today we have this year’s edition, as voted on by over 300 film executives.
Topping the 2022 edition is Catherine Schetina’s Pure, with a logline as follows: “Obsessed with food purity, Hannah’s trip to her sister’s destination wedding descends into madness when she contracts a mysterious foodborne illness that threatens to destroy her from within.”
Other scripts feature a look at the employees of Four Seasons Total Landscaping on November 7, 2020, the makings of It’s a Wonderful Life and the Madden videogame, a dark comedy about the Hindenburg Disaster, biopics on Dolly Parton, Michael Phelps, and Jerry Springer, and quite a heaping of sci-fi stories.

Moviegoers not far removed from the isolating strains of lockdown may find The Loneliest Whale: The Search for 52 strikes a chord. Distributor Bleecker Street and director Joshua Zeman hope so as the doc, a shift from the helmer’s true crime roots, opens in 75 theaters.
Digital release is set for July 16.
The film is a cinematic quest for the 52 Hertz Whale, which scientists believe has spent its entire life in solitude calling out at a frequency that is different from any other of its species. The whale, discovered in 1989, became a global sensation over the past three decades — including songs about it by British indie rock band Amber Run and K-pop’s BTS.
Zeman, who said he had childhood ambitions to be a marine biologist and loved Jacques Cousteau, was floored by the story and spent ten years trying to make the...

We've got an update for PalmStar Entertainment's long-gestured project that once had Brad Anderson (Transsiberian, The Machinist, Session 9, The Vanishing on 7th Street) attached to direct (we're told he still may produce). Chris Edwards is now attached to direct Unsound from a screenplay he co-wrote with Matthew Ross. Jonathan Shukat and Kevin Frakes also produce. The $10 million horror thriller features an "all in a never-before-seen original screenplay" and follows "A lonely, part-deaf, female deputy takes the first bold steps of her life by journeying through the underbelly of the Upper Midwest sex economy, on a personal quest to find a teenage sex-trafficking victim. Trusting a down-and-out ex pimp as her guide, she comes dangerously close to the edge, isolating everyone in her life, while uncovering a number of disquieting truths about herself, and the failed system she represents."...

It's sort of insane how little Brad Anderson (Transsiberian, The Machinist, Session 9) works, considering he's a genre favorite and delivers pretty damn good stuff (more recently The Vanishing on 7th Street). We learned this morning that Anderson could be getting behind the camera next year for Unsound, a $10 million indie project that's being kept under wraps. All that is know is that the horror thriller was penned by Matthew Ross and Chris Edwards and features an "all in a never-before-seen original screenplay." Jonathan Shukat and Kevin Frakes produce for PalmStar Entertainment. TAnderson is also attached to All Lost Souls, The Living and the Dead and Jack.
