Monsters of Folk to Celebrate 15th Anniversary with Expanded Edition Featuring Five Unreleased Songs
She & Him’s M. Ward, My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, and Bright Eyes’ Conor Oberst and Mike Mogis are celebrating the 15th anniversary of their supergroup, Monsters of Folk, and the release of their self-titled album with a new expanded edition featuring five previously-unreleased songs.
Monsters of Folk originally arrived in September 2009, featuring 14 collaborative songs from the group, who began performing together a few years prior. Now, the new expanded edition will include a batch of songs originally recorded during the album’s 2012 sessions, including two — “Disappeared” and “Museum Guard” — which were intended for a since-scrapped sci-fi film based on a screenplay by Oberst. As a preview, “Disappeared” is streaming in full below.
The 15th anniversary edition is due on June 14th via Ato Records, and will be on digital and vinyl formats (pre-orders are ongoing). Also featured on the album are contributions from Centro-matic’s Will Johnson. Check...

M. Ward has announced his new album Supernatural Thing, which is set to release on June 23rd. As a preview, he’s released the record’s title track.
The album is Ward’s first in three years and features contributions from Neko Case, First Aid Kit, Jim James, Kelly Pratt, Shovels & Rope, and Scott McMicken. It also includes two covers — one of David Bowie’s “I Can’t Give Everything Away” from his final album Blackstar, and a live recording of Daniel Johnston’s “Story of an Artist.”
“Supernatural Thing” as a single is an acoustic guitar-driven ditty with a jovial atmosphere, based on a message that came to Ward in a dream by none other than Elvis — “You can go anywhere you please.”
“Well, all my songs depend on dream imagery to some extent,” Ward said in a press release. “This was an actual dream I had about Elvis...

Glenn “Spot” Lockett, the trailblazing punk producer behind Sst Records and artistic statements by the likes of Hüsker Dü and Black Flag, has died at 72. The influential engineer had been battling fibrosis before he suffered a stroke several months earlier and ultimately passed away on Saturday at a healthcare facility in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
Former Sst Records co-owner Joe Carducci broke the news of Lockett’s death in a statement via Facebook, sharing that “his nurse told me he woke up alright but later showed no pulse and several attempts to revive him failed.” He noted the producer’s preferred name spelling “in all caps with a dot in the middle of the O” and called him “an architect of the natural approach to recording a band in the punk era.”

A documentary as sprawling and brilliant and flawed as the country it traverses, Eugene Jarecki’s “The Promised Land” is a fascinatingly overstuffed portrait of America in decline. In the process, it’s also: a biography of the 20th century’s most famous musician,; a story about how a man became king of a democratic nation; a nuanced analysis of cultural appropriation in a multi-racial society; a southern-fried rock n’ roll performance piece; a horrifyingly sober look at the rise of Donald Trump; a closed-casket funeral service for The American Dream; the best recent film about how the hell we got here; and more. So much more.
It’s the latest project from a filmmaker who has always been obsessed with the forces that fuel America (watch 2005’s “Why We Fight” for a perpetually relevant dissection of the military-industrial complex) and who always returns to the same one: Money.

Fox Searchlight Pictures’ “Demolition,” a film directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (“Dallas Buyers Club,” “Wild”) features a pretty solid cast including Academy Award nominees Jake Gyllenhaal and Naomi Watts. It also apparently features a pretty good soundtrack that includes My Morning Jacket, M. Ward and Sufjan Stevens and incorporates classics by Heart, Free and Eric Burdon & The Animals. Beck’s famous musical arranger dad David Campbell shows up too. Abkco Music & Records is releasing the digital soundtrack for Music From the Motion Picture Demolition on April 8. Here’s the film’s synopsis (and you can read our review from the Toronto International Film Festival here). Demolition follows Davis Mitchell (Gyllenhaal), a successful investment banker who loses his wife in a tragic car crash. Despite pressure from his father in law, Phil (Chris Cooper), to pull it together Davis continues to unravel. What starts as a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns.

Last Saturday, at Harlem's cultural temple, the Apollo, a country headliner took the stage for the very first time. Better yet, she sold it out. If it seems hard to believe that it took so long for a country performer to lead a date at the legendary venue, you're not alone — Kacey Musgraves herself was skeptical. Nevertheless, it's true. Though the Apollo's known in pop culture as a few things — the East Coast epicenter of black music tradition, the ultimate dreamers' stage, formerly the first thing seen after SNL's closing credits — it started out a century ago as a burlesque theater before playing host to hordes of swing, jazz, blues, gospel, soul, and, eventually, hip-hop and comedy greats. In recent decades, the Apollo has shifted its bookings again, welcoming (in addition to who you'd expect) overwhelmingly indie-rock acts like M. Ward and Eels to its stage. It...

She & Him -- singer Zooey Deschanel and guitarist M. Ward -- are turning their already-retro sound to ghosts from the past with their latest release, "Classics," in which they tackle tunes by Frank Sinatra, Carole King and more. But the new video for their latest single, a cover of Dusty Springfield's "Stay Awhile," finds them cavorting with what appear to be literal ghosts -- with the help of some green screen effects. It begins with Ward picking up an invisible guitar and deftly pickin' up a storm in a performance worthy of the Air Guitar World Championship. Soon, Deschanel is dancing around an immaculate California home, while being dipped, twirled and carried by an unseen partner, perhaps a long gone lover. Before long, she completely abandons reality and ends up dancing in the clouds, with the other angels. Watch the video here: "Classics" arrives December 2.

Zooey Deschanel filmed scenes for the holiday episode of her hit Fox comedy series New Girl in Downtown Los Angeles on Thursday.

Deschanel was accompanied on location for New Girl in California by Jake Johnson (Nick Miller), Max Greenfield (Schmidt), Hannah Simone (Cece), Lamore Morris (Winston Bishop), and Damon Wayans Jr. (Coach). She & Him -- the sunny pop duo consisting of "New Girl" star Zooey Deschanel and indie guitar ace M. Ward -- are ready to tackle the "Classics." The twosome are making their major label debut this fall with a Columbia Records album full of timeless standards, which the press release assures us will be "carefully-selected," and not just randomly chosen. Although no track listing has yet been released, "Classics" will no doubt reflect Deschanel and Ward's eclectic musical taste, which tends to lean heavily on '60 pop. Together, they've previously covered The Beach Boys' "I Can Hear Music"; Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell On You"; Smokey Robinson's "You Really Got a Hold On Me"; The Beatles' "I Should Have Known Better" and Blondie's "Sunday Girl." They also released a Christmas album in 2012. Adding to that old-timey feel, She & Him recorded the new album live in the studio,...

If you've watched Mary Elizabeth Winstead in "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" or "Smashed," you know that the 29-year-old can act. But, did you know that she could sing too? Read More: Mary Elizabeth Winstead Discusses Why She Took on 'Smashed': "I wasn't feeling good about what I was doing." In collaboration with hip-hop producer Dan the Automator, Winstead has just released the music video for her single "Did We Live Too Fast." The duo (similar to actress Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward) go by the name Got a Girl. Winstead has done some singing in the past, most noticeably in Quentin Tarantino's 2007 film "Death Proof." In the black-and-white video we see Winstead playing a 60s housewife character who is in a contentious relationship with who we presume is her husband. It's a sexy, retro track, something that we could see Matthew Weiner ending one of his "Mad Men" episodes with.

She managed to nab him for a cameo on her show earlier this year, and now Zooey Deschanel and Prince's duet "FALLINLOVE2NITE" is available for fans.
Back in January, the post-Super Bowl episode of "New Girl" grabbed massive ratings thanks to the starpower of the Purple One.
Of course, the 34-year-old star is no stranger to the microphone herself as she's one-half of the hit indie duo She & Him with M. Ward.
Check out their tune below, which Zooey introduced on Twitter, announcing, "For those of you asking - here’s the song I was lucky enough to sing on with Prince!"...

Remember in February when Prince guested on an episode of Zooey Deschanel’s "New Girl?” His appearance included a climactic musical number. Listen below to the full-version of that song, "FALLINLOVE2NITE." The catchy love duet recalls the silly/sweet qualities of the “Prince” episode, in which the Purple One cheers up Jess (Deschanel) with a makeover, pancakes and relationship advice. Prince takes the vocal lead — kicking off the song purring the question, “Anybody wanna fall in love tonight” — amid funky rhythms, horns and Deschanel’s folky vocals coming in on the hook (she’s one half of the duo She & Him with M. Ward). According to Dr. Funkenberry, the song was released via iHeartRadio by Epic Records, leading to speculation that Prince’s forthcoming "Plectrumelectrum" may come out on the label.

Lady Gaga took her longstanding relationship with the Muppets one step further last night in a 90-minute ABC show dubbed Lady Gaga & the Muppets' Holiday Spectacular. The singer bonded with the puppet ensemble while performing songs from her recent Artpop album with special guests Elton John, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, RuPaul and Kristen Bell. While Gaga didn't wear any muppets this time around, she still dressed the part, stepping out in scads of furs and feathers.

Jake Bellows is getting ready to release his debut solo album New Ocean, however Bellows is certainly not a newcomer in the music world. He was the front man of Neva Dinova for nearly 15 years before stepping away from music for a brief time. Neva Dinova toured with the likes of Death Cab for Cutie, M. Ward, Rilo Kiley, and Bright Eyes. New Ocean covers a wide spectrum of styles from Bossa Nova to soul and, according to Bellows, is about “relinquishing the fear of death and recognizing that we are all part of the same thing”. New Ocean...

Though she makes a living—partially, at least—by being on camera, Zooey Deschanel would rather fans not take photos at She & Him concerts, thank you very much. The New Girl star and her bandmate M. Ward made the request via signs at this past weekend’s Toronto Urban Roots Fest, saying they’d prefer the audience “enjoy the show they have put together in 3-D.” Entertainment writer Jonathan Dekel tells Gawker that he spoke to the band’s manager at the fest, who told him “Zooey doesn’t want to see phones.” Still, some people were allowed to take ...

It’s a feat, turning a sea of people in Central Park into a crowd of bobbleheads, but that’s exactly what M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel—aka She & Him—accomplished on the first night of their two-show run at Central Park’s Summerstage on Saturday night. Deschanel’s too-twee-for-words adorableness could’ve gotten to them, or her enthusiasm for whacking the hell out of her tambourine, or the facial expressions exchanged between her and Ward over the course of the 90-minute set. The covers of the evening could’ve done the crowd in—especially their exceptional take on “You Really Got A Hold On Me,” which succeeded...

It's not beyond Neko Case to write her songs in the voice of a variety of characters, and a male's narrative hasn't been one she's shied from. In "Man" featuring M. Ward -- the first full song to arrive from the songwriter's new album -- there's something explicit in the way in which she writes about gender identity as central to its message. In the song stream below, you'll actually see Case dressed as a man with a mustache and button-up, leading the reins of a horse in one hand and holding a lit lighter in another. It's a classic, if...

First, the facts: Neko Case has a new album called The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You (that one is approaching Fiona territory); it's out September 3, and she has a new single, "Man," featuring M. Ward on guitar. It also features a picture of her and a horse. Look at that horse! Anyway, the song is below, and if you're really feeling the country music today, here is a new Civil Wars song. Enjoy.

File this under: It's about time! Nail art enthusiast Zooey Deschanel is getting her own nail decals. The New Girl star and one half of band She & Him (her bandmate is M. Ward), is collaborating with Rad Nails for a set of limited edition nail stickers that match the pair's newest album cover. Unsurprisingly the decals fit Zooey's signature cute, retro style. The mod designs feature pastel bows and squares. Can you say adorkable?! But the best part? The decal set is free when you buy the album from Merge Records using the coupon code Nails. Which is a total steal and way easier than trying to Diy the actress' famous tuxedo nail art.

5) Jay Stansfield “Building A Shield”
Directed by Jay Stansfield
The latest from Jay Stansfield kicks off this week’s 5 Best Music Videos Of The Week. “Building A Shield” is an interestingly shot video that explores the sensitive subject of child neglect. Although the video mostly follows the child (featuring some beautiful shots in the woods), there are some excellent framed shots of Stansfield himself.
4) Lightning Dust “Diamond”
Directed by Helen Reed
It took me a while to figure out why I was initially drawn to this music video. I figured it was so mundane and uncreative, it made it stand out somehow. It’s a pretty different reason to include it in this top 5 list but I’m going for it. What really struck me was how low the lighting was when swimming pools are usually bright. The slow pace kind of goes with the song that really has an 80s feel to it.

This, friends, is a music video that Zooey Deschanel directed for her band with M. Ward, She & Him. It's also the cutest thing you have ever seen, and, indeed, the cutest thing you will ever see.Just look at all of those wonderful dresses, all right? And that delightful little dance. And of course we can't forget the part toward the end where Zooey plays with all the props. Really, we can't forget any of it, lest we ever become sad little mounds of flesh that forget all the bits of happiness we once knew.Basically, this music video is the greatest, and if you haven't watched it already, just quit fooling yourself and get with the program, all right?--Emily Trainham Read more...

Have you ever watched the long version of the New Girl credits and thought, I wish this involved a sixties movie-musical dance sequence, and also maybe Zooey Deschanel talking to a stuffed duck? You are in luck! Because the Deschanel-directed video for "I Could've Been Your Girl" features all of the above, along with a sad, disgruntled M. Ward, who just wants to drink his cup of coffee. Whimsy is fine — this is a She & Him video, it comes with the territory — but really, can't we let M. Ward have his coffee first? Stop spilling the coffee!

What do Minnie Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Zooey Deschanel have in common? Other than being actresses they have all successfully turned their hand to music. Zooey Deschanel has just released ‘Volume 3.’ It’s her third album (fourth if you include their Christmas LP) under the moniker of She & Him. (‘him’ being singer-songwriter M. Ward.)
The idea of an actress with a singing career often comes across as a vanity project but let me reassure you this is no half-hearted hobby. She may be better known for playing kooky characters in ‘Elf’, ‘New Girl’ and ‘(500) Days of Summer’ but Deschanel has written and composed all of the original tracks on ‘Volume Three.’
For this latest record her musical partner, M. Ward, takes a back seat in a supporting role that is closer to that of a producer than a band member. In this role he allows the record to sound very...

But what’s keeping “Gatsby” from he top spot on amazon? None other than TV star Zooey Deschanel’s new album with partner M. Ward. They call themselves “She and Him.” It’s their third edition of songs together. Interesting–that the likeable Deschanel is holding Jay Z and friends back. In physical sales of CDs, amazon has “Gatsby” at number 12. Combined with iTunes and whats left of record stores, “Gatsby” should finish in the top 3 when sales are added up beginning tomorrow. What’s interesting about the “Gatsby” soundtrack: many of the tracks are only available if you buy the whole album for download. Customers can’t cherry pick nine of the 14 tracks and call it a day. I often wonder why this isn’t usually the case for albums. This was a smart move on the part of Interscope. And so while you can get Lana del Rey...

Zooey Deschanel got some support from her New Girl costars when the cast attended PaleyFest in La yesterday. We got a chance to talk to Max Greenfield, who gave us a teaser about his character Schmidt's new love interest and what's in the stars for his relationship with the now-engaged Cece. He said, "I don't know, I really don't know what's happening. We kinda go episode by episode and I'm trying to come to grips with the fact that Cece is doing her thing." Now that New Girl is preparing to go on hiatus, Zooey has another project on her plate - a new album and a Summer tour with her band, She & Him. She recently released a new single, "Never Wanted Your Love," which features Zooey's trademark vocals over bandmate M. Ward's music. She & Him's tour will kick off on June 13 and last through July 11. View Slideshow ›...

She & Him, "New Girl" star Zooey Deschanel's cutesy folk pop project with ace guitarist M. Ward, are back with a new summer name, just in time for the end of winter. "Never Wanted Your Love," the duo's first single from their upcoming fourth album, "Volume 3" (It's not a cheeky title; their third album was the holiday-themed lark "A Very She & Him Christmas"). Despite lyrics straight out of the Heartbreak Hotel, "Never" is a typically upbeat doodle of a pop song which highlights Deschanel's country-tinged vocals, some nice background harmony work and Ward's muted picking style.
