The New York-based seafood restaurant Hav & Mar features a contemporary interior design and elaborate artwork of Black mermaids lining the walls. On a recent afternoon, the restaurant’s renowned celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson isn’t around, but Atlanta rapper Anycia is here with her small entourage, including close collaborator and producer jetsonmade. Over the past year, the 26-year-old has rapidly risen with the vibrant personality and entrancing baritone that many people first heard during her On the Block performance of “Brb.” Anycia tells me that her prevailing memory of the moment is her fashion choice.

There were just six chefs left on “Top Chef: Houston” going into episode 10, “Dinner in Zero Gravity,” as the competition gets closer to the home stretch: Damarr Brown, Evelyn Garcia, Jae Jung, Buddha Lo, Ashleigh Shanti, and Nick Wallace. Chris Rock called Licorice Pizza “probably the best movie I saw this year,” introducing his friend the director Paul Thomas Anderson at the National Board of Review gala. “I only saw about four movies.”
The MGM film took NBR’s Best Picture and Anderson best director at awards announced late last year and celebrated with gusto at Cipriani 42nd Street in NYC last night after skipping last year due to Covid.
Anderson is “a person who has never cast me in sh-t. Nothing,” said Rock, scanning the room for star wattage. “No Spielberg? Did Will Smith show up?” (no and yes). “Sean Penn? Who I know has something to do with this war. I know he’s mixed up in it. Sean Penn is being water-boarded as we speak.” Penn (not present) had been on the ground in Ukraine shooting a documentary for Vice Studios about the Russian invasion.

Sony Pictures Classics releases Telluride-darling documentary Julia with a national TV push, culinary events and virtual screenings through November hosted by famous chefs from Alice Waters (San Francisco) and Johnny Spero (Boston) to Jamie Bissonnette (Houston) and luminaries from New York, LA, Philly and Miami.
Directors Betsy West and Julie Cohen talked up the film on one Today show segment, followed by another, where food stylist Susan Spungen made Child’s recipe for pear and almond tarts. Chef Marcus Samuelsson – who appears in the film — cooked Julia Child’s classic roasted chicken and glazed carrots on Rachel Ray. A Nightline interview with West and Cohen airs next week.
Marketing and outreach is key in the current tepid specialty market.
“Every city is new event. It’s a real grassroots campaign,” said Sony Pictures Classic co-president Tom Bernard. That includes ads in food sections of newspapers, on cooking podcasts and YouTube.

The world’s fascination with Julia Child — arguably the world’s first celebrity chef, and certainly the first to make a career out of cooking up both an assortment of beloved television shows and a bestselling lineup of books — hasn’t abated much since Child passed away in 2004. By 2009, Meryl Streep was playing her on-screen in Nora Ephron’s “Julie & Julia,” which threaded Child’s later years alongside the fraught young adulthood of New Yorker Julie Powell. Later this year, HBO Max will debut a full-scale miniseries about the Francophile, with British actress Sarah Lancashire playing Child. Before that series, however, there’s yet another entry — also, like the HBO Max series, entitled “Julia” — , who excel at putting the life stories of remarkable women on the big screen (see: their Oscar nominee “Rbg”).

Peacock is preparing a slew of spinoffs of hit non-scripted NBCU series.
The streamer has ordered spinoffs of Top Chef and Below Deck as well as Baking It, from Amy Poehler and the team behind Making It, and is becoming the home of American Ninja Warrior Junior, which was previously at Universal Kids.
This comes after Jenny Groom, EVP, Unscripted at NBCUniversal, told Deadline that it was looking to order a number of spinoffs of NBC unscripted series for Peacock in our recent State of the Non-Scripted Business feature.
As revealed by Deadline last month, Below Deck Down Under is one of these spinoffs. The series, a spinoff of the hit Bravo reality series, will showcase the upstairs/downstairs of a real working super-yacht in Australia.
The series is produced by 51 Minds with Nadine Rajabi, Mark Cronin, Courtland Cox, Cristina Lopez, Tania Hamidi, Christian Sarabia and Zachary Klein as exec producers.

Claire Saffitz, one of the most popular hosts of Bon Appétit’s YouTube channel -- who headlined the Gourmet Makes series, in which she recreated from scratch gourmet versions of popular junk foods -- is leaving the Condé Nast-owned publication in the wake of its larger reckoning with racism that has seen the departures of seven other video hosts.
“My formal relationship with Condé Nast Entertainment ended in May of this year, and I’ve decided not to continue the relationship," Saffitz wrote on Instagram. "I’m going to do my own thing."
Saffitz is the latest YouTube channel departee, after a June firestorm including the reemergence of a photo of former editor-in-chief Adam Rapoport donning brownface as well as allegations of racially-charged pay disparity and a lack of diversity within the 'Test Kitchen' video crew. While some former YouTube hosts are staying on at the magazine in an editorial or freelance capacity,...
