Even in this age of instant YouTube gratification, movie trailers are a big deal. They get us hyped for an upcoming project by making promises that the eventual film will (hopefully) pay off. The best sizzle reels are even able to do this by giving a taste of things to come without ruining any surprises or plot twists. Think about the teaser for Alien with its cracking egg and unnerving siren sound, or the deft use of a choral version of Radiohead’s “Creep” in the classic promo for The Social Network. Both of those examples speak to the haunting nature of their movies while allowing space for the film to stand on its own down the road.
But some trailers do their job too well. Some trailers outdo the movies they advertise, sometimes because the film has a concept too shallow to sustain more than three minutes, and sometimes...

Having a hissable, recurring villain adds that special something to any TV procedural.
Elijah Stone has been filling that role on The Rookie, tormenting members of the LAPD's Metro Division over the past two seasons (although it feels longer).
Sadly, complex villains such as Stone have recently become less of a thing on broadcast TV.
Let's look at the famed Hawaii Five-0 villain, Wo Fat, as a case study.
During the series' original run, Wo Fat was a crime boss, a red Chinese spy who answered to Peking (it was a different time) and served as the primary enemy of Steve McGarrett (played by Jack Lord).
Wo Fat (portrayed by Khigh Dhiegh) hung like a dense fog over that version, appearing in 15 episodes over nine of the show's 12 seasons.
In the rebooted series, Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos) was a crime boss and former Chinese Ministry of Interior agent. appeared...

Writer-director-cinematographer Molly Manning Walker and writer-director Charlotte Regan revealed some of the big lessons they each learned from their respective debut features How to Have Sex and Scrapper and imparted advice to an audience of screenwriters at Dublin’s inaugural Storyhouse festival for writers.
Manning Walker, whose How to Have Sex won the Un Certain Regard prize in Cannes last year, had spent a number of years as a cinematographer before launching that film, about a group of British teenage girls who go on a rites-of-passage holiday in Malia, Greece, and spoke about how that had impacted her process of writing.
“The truth is when I started writing, I guess it came through like visuals and I started to write visuals and everyone was always telling me that I needed to find some story because I was just writing visuals and I still get that note, so maybe I still need to figure it out,...

In the annals of famous movie monsters, it's arguable that the creatures from 2018's "A Quiet Place" rank fairly low. After all, following the release of the first film and 2021's "A Quiet Place Part II," we still don't have an official name for the extraterrestrial beasties that decide to come to Earth one fine day and start mowing down everything that makes a peep. At least the creatures' most recent cinematic progenitor, the Cloverfield monster, has a name by virtue of his film's offbeat title. The "Quiet Place" aliens have to settle for being unofficially dubbed "Death Angels," a term taken from a newspaper headline clipping seen posted on a board in the first movie.
That said, us monster kids' loss is cinema's gain, because it is the very unknowability of the Death Angels which lend the "A Quiet Place" films such spooky, tense power. Put simply, the franchise...

Molly Manning Walker was on a boat to Greece last May when she got a call to say she should probably turn around as soon as possible and get back to the Cannes Film Festival.
She’d already made a major splash in the south of France with her debut feature “How to Have Sex,” a cautionary tale following three British teenage girls on a wild and intoxicated summer holiday that takes a dark turn over the issue of sexual consent. The film, which had been picked up by Mubi prior to Cannes, became one of the breakout hits of the 2023 event, enjoying critical acclaim, standing ovations and earmarking Manning Walker as an exciting new cinematic voice. The festival had been, in no uncertain terms, a resounding success.

Every year brings new Christmas movies with their often plentiful and phony Christmas cheer. In fact, most of the recent ones released on streaming—such as 2023’s less-than-esteemed bunch—seem designed expressly for their disposability. They’re content as sincere as polyester Christmas roping strung around the company’s copier in the back. You’re meant to watch them with one eye on the phone, and no Christmas Spirit in your heart.
But there was a time, dear reader, when a Christmas movie could be a truly magical thing: an emotional and cathartic experience shared with strangers in a darkened theater that would make you believe in the true meaning of Yuletide as if you were Ebenezer Scrooge on the glorious Christmas morning following the visit of three ghosts. And then some… some Christmas movies made you feel more like Scrooge the night before. Alone. In the dark. Staring at...

By the early 1990s, it was still fairly rare to see a Hollywood production invade New England to shoot a film. Things had certainly been made here: Ever heard of Jaws? It was shot entirely on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. And I made a documentary about another one: Stephen King’s Pet Sematary, which was shot entirely in Maine in 1988. In fact, much of my documentary film work has focused on stories native to New England. But, still, we didn’t see the kind of movie activity and buzz that we see nowadays. Despite its natural beauty of mountains, rocky coastlines, and beautiful beaches, New England can be difficult (and expensive) to navigate for a film crew. What’s more, during certain months of the year our weather can be unpredictable and harsh. We’re known for our Nor’easters and blizzards and even the occasional hurricane in the autumn months.

The British Independent Film Awards celebrated plenty of incredible films on Sunday, December 3 over here in London with “All of Us Strangers” winning seven awards including Best Picture.
The Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal film wasn’t the only picture to be highly lauded, however, as plenty of other movies were also nominated for and awarded with several gongs. “How to Have Sex” won Best Supporting Performance for Shaun Thomas (along with Mescal) and Best Lead Performance for Mia McKenna-Bruce while Molly Manning Walker was nominated for Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Debut Director, and Best Debut Screenplay. She was also nominated for her work as the director of photography on Charlotte Regan’s “Scrapper.” I got caught up with several winners and nominees on the red carpet at the Bifas as well as the winners’ room.
First up, I spoke to Thomas, who was nominated for his supporting turn alongside co-star Samuel Bottomley.

Peacock announced on Friday that The Exorcist: Believer, the first in a new trilogy of films based on the 1973 horror classic, The Exorcist, will debut exclusively on the platform on December 1, there joining titles like The Black Phone and Five Nights at Freddy’s, among many others.
Hailing from Universal and Blumhouse, Believer introducers viewers to Victor Fielding, who, since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, has raised their daughter Angela (Lidya Jewett) on his own. Now that David Gordon Green has sent another horror franchise to hell with The Exorcist: Believer, the time is right this Halloween for Awfully Good Movies to tackle one of the most awfully good sequels ever made… Exorcist II: The Heretic!
While the late William Friedkin and William Peter Blatty were hellbent against any follow-ups to their seminal horror classic, the suits at Warner Bros. felt otherwise and rolled camera on a follow-up four years later from another prestige filmmaker, John Boorman, despite Boorman passing on the first film and calling it a “repulsive” tale about “child abuse”. So instead, Linda Blair returns as Regan MacNeil one last time to fight the satanic demon nipping at her heels once more, thanks to a mind synchronization device that is just the tip of this sequel’s deeply insane iceberg.

"The Exorcist" is one of the biggest horror movies of all time. Not only did the William Friedkin masterpiece spawn countless imitators, but it also established most tropes of the demonic possession horror movie. After a few theatrical follow-ups and an excellent TV show, we've now gotten a legacy sequel in the form of "The Exorcist: Believer."
David Gordon Green's "The Exorcist: Believer" is part of Universal and Blumhouse's ambitious attempt at recreating the success of Green and Blumhouse's "Halloween" reboot trilogy. It's a $400 million commitment that the studio is still on the hook for, the horror movie equivalent of Amazon committing to making multiple spin-offs of "Citadel" before it even came out.
The film, sadly, was not the success Universal was hoping for. In his review for /Film, Witney Seibold wrote, "'Believer' is not the worst 'Exorcist' film by any stretch, but it's certainly the least intriguing.

There is no doubt about the fact that the impact William Friedkin’s The Exorcist (1973) left on the horror genre was immense, so much so that critics often compare it with the influence Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey had on the science fiction landscape. Aside from being exceptional in every technical department of moviemaking, the movie dealt with a number of thought-provoking themes in a sincere manner. More than the supernatural intimidation of Pazuzu the demon, the audience found the horror in the grounded, relatable elements and characters, the conflict between reason and faith, the absolute corruption of innocence, and the true meaning of evil. The makers intended the movie to make the audience look for the horror within, and in doing so, they created an enduring legacy that inspired multitudes of horror classics like Possession (1981).

This article contains spoilers for "The Exorcist: Believer."
William Friedkin's celebrated horror film "The Exorcist" was so popular upon its release in 1973 that it more or less invented a genre. Thanks to "The Exorcist," film audiences around the world know what demonic possession is, what demons look like, and what particular sect of Christian clergyman needs to be called in to take care of the problem. If a loved one begins spewing green slime, speaking in Latin, and levitating above their bed, you best be sure that a Methodist minister will not be called. No, it's Roman Catholic priests or bust.
To pause for a moment on that green slime, however, it's a reference to two moments in "The Exorcist" when the young Regan MacNeil (Linda Blair) weaponized gastrointestinal discomfort toward a visitor. Regan, under demonic influence, projectile vomits pea-green ooze copiously on passers-by. The vomiting effect was achieved...

The magic of cinema. The lights dim, the screen illuminates, and we’re transported to another world. But what happens when that world contains… another world? Horror has long been a genre that loves to play with its audience, and nothing says “I see you” quite like a movie-within-a-movie. It’s like a Russian doll of terror, layers of scares unfolding one after another… and who doesn’t love a good nesting nightmare?
Let’s dive into the meta-madness of horror films that give us a double dose of dread, with the movie-within-a-movie trope!
Universal 10. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) Movie-Within-a-Movie: Halloween (1978)
Dr. Daniel Challis (Tom Atkins) stumbles upon a sinister plot by the Silver Shamrock mask company to harness Stonehenge’s mystical powers and harm children on Halloween night. Amidst this chaos, a TV commercial advertises the original Halloween movie, suggesting a universe where Michael Myers’ terror is mere fiction.

The Exorcist: Believer had no trouble delivering a first-place finish at the weekend box office with an estimated $27.2 million from 3,663 theaters. While a respectable opening in this climate, the R-rated film came in below expectations domestically as it tries to revive the franchise after Universal reportedly paid a hefty $400 million for rights.
Overseas, the pic started off with $17.9 million from its first 52 markets for a global start of $45.1 million.
The David Gordon Green-directed horror pic hits theaters exactly 50 years after the first Exorcist opened and made cinema history, grossing nearly $450 million at the global box office before adjusting for inflation. Directed by William Friedkin, the film was based on the book by William Peter Blatty and starred Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn.
The Believer recently had to move up its release by one week after Taylor Swift announced that her new concert film, The Eras Tour, will open across the globe on Oct.

It’s been 50 years since Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn (Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore) earned a Best Actress Oscar nomination for her role as Chris MacNeil, mom of Regan (Linda Blair), in the original The Exorcist film. Burstyn hasn’t been involved in any of The Exorcist projects since portraying the terrified mother of a young girl possessed by a demon in the 1973 blockbuster horror movie. However, The Exorcist: Believer managed to lure her back, and in this behind-the-scenes video, Burstyn discusses her return.
The Exorcist: Believer opens in theaters on October 6, 2023.
In addition to Ellen Burstyn, the cast includes Oscar nominee Leslie Odom, Jr (One Night in Miami), Lidya Jewett (Good Girls), Olivia O’Neill, Emmy winner Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale), Grammy winner Jennifer Nettles, and two-time Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz.
David Gordon Green directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Peter Sattler, based on characters created by William Peter Blatty.

I don't throw the word "iconic" around willy-nilly, but I think it's fair to say Linda Blair's performance in "The Exorcist" is iconic. Blair didn't have an easy task; she had to go through hell to portray a possessed kid, shouting foul language and undergoing heavy make-up as young Regan MacNeil, a 12-year-old possessed by the demon Pazuzu.
Well, there's a new "Exorcist" movie on the way — "The Exorcist: Believer." The film, helmed by David Gordon Green, brings back Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil, Regan's mother. But what about Blair? She was definitely on set — as an advisor. Speaking with Total Film, Green confirmed that Blair helped the newly possessed kids — played by Lidya Jewett and Olivia O'Neill — learn the ropes about getting demonic.
"We were really lucky to have Linda," Green said. "The hardships she faced during the production and after the production were certainly headlines and had an effect on her.

Whatever may be the ulterior reason behind Lifetime thrillers frequenting national parks lately, we’re not complaining. After all, the least we can ask of our melodramatic TV movies is the effective distraction of prettier settings when the thrill loses its grip on us. That is, if it does grab hold of it in the first place. But on a more hopeful note, if Taken in Montana is any indication, the move towards broody, cinematic settings isn’t all that’s improved in Lifetime flicks. With a much graver stake to prop up the tension, Taken in Montana does what its predecessors invariably struggled to achieve: it infuses the narrative with an adequate amount of emotional wager for you to actually root for the people it lands in a world of trouble.

The Exorcist: Believer will find Ellen Burstyn returning to play Chris MacNeil fifty years after last playing the role, but what about Linda Blair?
Linda Blair played Regan MacNeil in the original movie and although she isn’t expected to appear in The Exorcist: Believer, she was involved in the production. Director David Gordon Green told Total Film that Blair came onboard the sequel as an advisor. “She came to set because she was an advisor on the movie… because we’re dealing with young people, and we want to take them to dangerous places safely,” Green said. “I was really lucky to have her read the script, but she was not interested in a significant role and stepping back into that.“
Regan has been referenced in The Exorcist: Believer trailer, and with two more movies on the way, I’ve got to believe that Linda Blair will reprise the role in some fashion.

God, or at least the idea of a god, is an omniscient presence that’s also suspiciously absent in William Friedkin’s The Exorcist. The faith is kept alive in the film’s perpetual use of religious iconography, implying a worldly sense of spiritual belief, but the way in which the various priests conduct their pietism, most exemplified by Jason Miller’s brooding church psychologist Damien Karras, practically render their convictions as moot. At one point, Karras openly doubts his career choice after seeing firsthand the anxieties of his patients.
Of course, the devil is another story. It manifests itself within poor 12-year-old Regan McNeil (Linda Blair), turning a figure of pure innocence into a bile- and vulgarity-spewing demon who goes unnoticed by divine intervention. Friedkin and William Peter Blatty, adapting his own bestselling novel, forgo the easy psychological introspection that’s found in a crisis of faith, instead externalizing...

Convicting a Murderer (Daily Wire+)
Did you fall for the Steven Avery saga with Netflix’s Making a Murderer? Did you demand justice and, in doing so, throw Steven’s unwitting victims under the bus to do it?
Well, Candace Owens has helped put together another view of that docuseries, including how court transcripts and voice recordings were manipulated to paint a picture fitting their narrative rather than allowing the evidence to speak for itself.
Prepare to be taken on a journey through witness and Avery fan interviews that will upend the narrative. Was he wrongly imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit? Absolutely. But that’s not the whole story.
