Star Wars Battlefront II‘s ongoing closed alpha has already brought word on several of the sequel’s sizeable character roster – General Grievous, Iden Verso, Darth Maul, and Captain Phasma were all name-dropped in a recent leak – but we now have a little more information regarding the entire collection of playable heroes.
With a vast array of characters from all eras of the franchise, it’s almost a guarantee that you’ll find at least one or two favorites among the gigantic roster. There are certainly a lot of exciting figures from the Star Wars universe to take control of here and thanks to Reddit, we can now tell you a little more about each one of them.
There’s quite a bit to digest, but if you’re ready to dive right in, then take a look at what this new leak has to say about characters like Boba Fett,...

Starting with a fine example of country music over old photos of Nascar, shots of horses and the past exploits of moonshiners, the clueless film viewer is immediately transported to another world: A Freakin Wild World!
Smash: Motorized Mayhem is a kinetic, primal documentary about a fantastic passion—Driving, speeding and crashing old school buses. “ Put the petal to the medal.” The viewer needs to appreciate the finer things in life, such as driving old transportation at wild speeds. It’s all about the adrenalin turn-on of risking life and limb for cheap thrills– driving unwieldy contraptions ordinarily utilized for rowdy, zit-infested school kids, but recently refurbished for a new adventure—the crash, bang and Pow! The Goal of these drivers: “ To be Redneck Racers!”
Orlando Speedworld is the venue in which the main action takes place. Many fans come out to see this exciting demolition derby.

Last week Stephen Colbert brought back an old friend to “The Late Show,” and no it wasn’t Jon Stewart, it was his “Colbert Report” alter ego Stephen Colbert. Though, on Wednesday night he told viewers that while many enjoyed the return of his “Report” character he stated, “You know who didn’t enjoy it so much? Corporate lawyers.”
“Because, and this is true, immediately after that show, CBS’s top lawyer was contacted by the top lawyer from another company to say that the character ‘Stephen Colbert’ is their intellectual property, which is surprising, because I never considered that guy much of an intellectual,” he added. Those corporate lawyers would be from Viacom, Comedy Central’s parent company.

From Thomas F Wilson in Back To The Future to Nicolas Cage and John Travolta in Face/Off - when actors play multiple roles...
The dramatic use of actors playing multiple characters is a bold and rather theatrical device that has its ups and downs. It goes at least as far back as Captain Hook being played by the same actor who plays the Darling children's father in stage productions of Peter Pan, a technique largely adopted in film adaptations of the story, too (hello to Jason Isaacs).
It's used a lot in cinema too. Done well, it's impressive, but when it's bad, it's Jack & Jill. Whether used in comedy or drama or outright horror, there are countless examples of actors delivering terrific performances in more than one role at once, and that's before we even get past Cloud Atlas. Still, we've had a go at totting up 25 of the best.

It’s Paris Games Week. Sony shunned Gamescom earlier in the year due to its proximity to E3, giving Microsoft the chance to fire off a few shots in the console war without reply. Now the roles are reversed and Sony gets to stand on the stage and give a conference knowing that Microsoft won’t have much of a presence to counter with. With Gamescom traditionally being a pretty big deal for Sony, this likely won’t just be a throwaway show. Expect an E3-style conference with a more European slant; less dollars and cents, and probably a few slightly more out there ideas.
Sony shows have been interesting lately since, in stark contrast to Microsoft, we have very little idea what any of their first and second party studios are actually doing. It’s been very quiet on that front from Sony, so there could very well...

A look into the making of space opera comic ‘Saga’ and Canada vs. U.S. war story ‘We Stand On Guard’
The world is ruled by women when all male mammals (all but two) die suddenly. A group of teens discover their parents are part of an evil crime organization. War-torn Iraq is seen through the eyes of lions escaped from the Baghdad Zoo. These are just some of the tales spun by Brian K. Vaughan, one of the most compelling, creative, thought-provoking writers in comic books today. Issue #4 of Vaughan’s “We Stand On Guard” hits comic book store shelves today. The mini-series imagines a war between the U.S. and Canada about a century into the future. It centers on 18-year-old Canadian Amber, who’s survived on the run for 12 years when her older brother is captured by the American army. The series will run for a total of six issues, though Vaughan told HitFix that he and artist Steve Skroce “are already talking about what we’re gonna work on next.

Since Joe and Anthony Russo took control of Captain America: The Winter Soldier for Marvel with aplomb, the directing duo have become hot favorites to take Joss Whedon’s place once the filmmaker steps down after next year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron. As such, this would put the Russo brothers in the director’s chair (or chairs) for the studio’s much-anticipated ensemble piece, Avengers: Infinity War.
That’s according to a report published by Deadline, who recently revealed that Rush‘s Daniel Bruhl has signed on to star in the pair’s upcoming Captain America: Civil War. Here’s what the outlet had to share on the matter.
“The Russo are building up their Marvel cred with this all-star outing, and I keep hearing they will step up to the ultimate Marvel all-star team and take the reins of The Avengers franchise from Joss Whedon, possibly with that...

What happens if you're a groom without any groomsmen? Well, if you're like Doug (Josh Gad), you hire a professional like Jimmy (Kevin Hart) to pretend to be your best man and best pal for the duration of your wedding. It's more expensive but less time-consuming than going on a lot of man-dates a la "I Love You Man," especially if you don't like bonding over Rush and "slappin' da bass."
Doug actually needs seven guys to be his groomsmen, and he's got less than two weeks to make it happen. Jimmy rounds up a gaggle of weirdos, and they construct an entire fake history of friendship together. The thing is, Doug's fiancée (played by Kaley Cuoco) eventually realizes something's afoot; it's not like Doug was a party animal before Jimmy showed up on the scene. Will Doug come clean to his loved ones about his hired motley crew? Will...

Dermot Mulroney has signed up for a story arc on Shameless as Fiona‘s latest suitor. While he’ll play a new character, TVLine describes him as basically replacing the character that was played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
Dermot Mulroney, not to be confused with the guy who was on American Horror Story.
Former Daily Show showrunner Rory Albanese — who worked on the show for 14 years — is returning to Comedy Central’s late night lineup. He’ll be in charge of the upcoming Minority Report, the show that will replace The Colbert Report. That sounds like a pretty promising sign.

Most headbangers of a certain age have gone through this…heading to our local music store in anticipation of snatching up the latest album by our favourite band on the day of its release. We rush home and throw it on our stereo, ready to once-again to be blown away – after all, their other albums were awesome…how could this not be?
But as the album plays on, something is amiss. What pumps from your speakers is not what you were expecting. You can’t always put your finger on what’s wrong, but this is definitely not the music which made you love them in the first place. Maybe your band is stretching its wings and it’ll take several listens for you to warm up to it, maybe the frequent line-up changes have changed its sound – or maybe your band is committing the ultimate sin of selling-out.

A former Alpha is poised to uncover Haven‘s many troubling secrets.
TVLine has learned exclusively that Laura Mennell, who played the “suggestive” Nina on Syfy’s Alphas, has joined Haven Season 5 in the recurring role of a brilliant (and, well, beautiful) epidemiologist from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who fears the titular town is on the verge of a deadly viral outbreak.
Mennell’s character is described as “a force to be reckoned with,” as Audrey (played by Emily Rose), Nathan (Lucas Bryant) and Duke (Eric Balfour) quickly will discover.

Mastodon has shown two very different sides with the two song releases thus far for forthcoming album "Once More 'Round the Sun." There's the more melodic, mass consumer bent on "High Road," and then there's today's "Chimes at Midnight." The latter chomps a bit deeper, hits a bit heavier, and is representative of how fans may see this album meander more than their used to. This is not a bad thing. The most progressive sounds from the metal band have been exorcised on "Crack the Skye," their more bounding, commercial licks like on the "Jonah Hex" soundtrack and on 2011's "The Hunter." After a couple listens to "Once More..." there is just an expanse that even veers into (dare I say it?) glam. All the while, Brent Hinds' voice is in snarling, excellent form and drummer Brann Dailor is still a godd*mned monster. Veteran producer Nick Raskulinecz -- yup,...

American Idol's theme this week was "Home," encouraging all of the singers to pick a song that represents where they come from. Again, many of the singers struggled to break out of their nervousness and to find their unique voice in the competition. A few, however, managed to shine on the Idol stage and win praise from judges Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban.
Jena Irene, a Michigan native, sang KT Tunstall’s “Suddenly I See.” Irene left her piano behind this week and appeared to want to show a more energetic side of herself. Connick, Urban and Lopez all enjoyed the tone of her voice, but had differing opinions on the quality of her overall performance.
Representing New Hampshire, Alex Preston sang “I Don’t Wanna Be” by Gavin DeGraw. Both Lopez and Urban were underwhelmed, citing a bad arrangement choice and instability, respectively. Connick, for...

The 2013 RopeofSilicon Movie Awards I was hesitant to actually do a sixth year of the RopeofSilicon Awards for a variety of reasons, but most of all due to the deluge of awards handed out for movies at this point in our culture. As it turns out, I'm glad I waited and I'm glad I decided to go forward with the Awards. As we've moved into 2014 it became clear there were not only films and performances from 2013 that were still resonating with audiences, but there were some that hadn't gotten the attention I felt they deserved. Therefore, these awards afforded me the opportunity to highlight some of those films and performances. Looking back, 2013 was something of a strange year for movies. It was a year dominated by big budget features, but while many of those blockbusters made lots of money, they fell quite flat in terms of overall audience reception. Films...

I'm of the opinion 2013 was a great year for movies overall, but at the same time it wasn't necessarily a great year with a ton of great movies, thus making my top ten of 2013 a little harder than I'd expected to put together. Before finalizing the list I attempted to watch and rewatch as many movies as I could fit in while at the same time hoping to create some distance from those experiences, expecting a certain grouping of films to eventually bubble to the surface as the most memorable and emotional affecting in what really ended up being a rather dark and melancholy year at the cinema. For me, a year end top ten is about the films I want to watch again. Films that, as soon as they end, you could watch them all over again immediately, not wanting whatever connection to what you just saw to go away.

A few days ago, we asked the online film community to rack their brains and submit their Top 10 films of 2013 for our annual poll. An incredible 94 movie bloggers answered the call, and we have sorted through the deluge of entries to find out what a handful of online journalists have deemed the best films of the year.
If you have a favourite journalist – or would like to follow other like-minded film fanatics through the power of the internet – you can find the blogger’s twitter account and website above their individual lists, which were compiled in no particular order and only take UK release dates into account. These various entries were then collated to bring about the definitive top 10. Have a look at the results below:

Listen, I’ve seen a lot of magical things in my short time at the EW offices; it’s a cool place. David Blaine straight up proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he is a sorcerer by making a deck of cards disappear from my bare hands a few months ago. This weekend, a Ridley Scott-directed drama starring Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Cameron Diaz, and Brad Pitt got trounced at the box office by Johnny Knoxville in an old-man costume. Yep, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa topped the chart with an excellent $32 million in its first three days, giving Knoxville his sixth No. 1 movie after his three Jackass films, Men in Black II, and The Dukes of Hazzard. Not a bad run for a guy who built his career on getting pushed into street curbs while sitting inside shopping carts!

Gravity hasn’t given up the top box office spot since its October 4 debut, but the Sandra Bullock-George Clooney outer space adventure will likely come back down to earth this weekend. And it has nothing to do with the release of Ridley Scott’s The Counselor, another adult-targeted drama. No, the big threat to Gravity is the ultra-cheap comedy Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, which appears poised to ride its shopping cart all the way into first place.

Cinema is recovering its superiority over the small screen by rediscovering strengths its junior rival cannot match
Over the last year or two, newspaper columnists, festival speechmakers and bus-stop sages have concurred in a damning judgment. To the point of tedium and beyond, they've insisted that television has displaced film as the home of involving drama and grownup comedy. Nowadays, supposedly, it's the small screen that provides convincing characters, credible plots and incisive wit; the senior medium offers only crude stories, infantile rudery and mindless spectacle. What's more, cinema's failings reflect not mere passing weakness but intrinsic deficiencies that will leave it forever eclipsed by its impudent offspring.
The fate of Steven Soderbergh's Behind the Candelabra crystallises this narrative. This project, featuring Michael Douglas as Liberace, was rejected by Hollywood for being too edgy, but picked up by HBO. It aired in America in May to rapture from TV...

It's Amir here, bringing you the weekend box office report.
one more worry for the good Captain
The biggest news this week is Gravity's ridiculously small drop in sales. Anyone who has seen the film would tell you to watch it in 3D to truly experience it, and it's no surprise that with aid of those hiked up prices, Alfonso Cuaron's visual masterpiece topped the charts again by a wide margin. That's one extra problem Captain Richard Phillips didn't need to deal with, but as it turns out, Astronaut Sandra Bullock is even mightier than Muse. Although Captain Phillips's 26m opening is impressive enough, one can't help but imagine what it would have done without a direct competitor eating into its demographic.

Murder Police is Dba: dead before arrival.
Fox has killed its new animated comedy before the first airing. The series, about an inept detective and his cop co-workers, was set to star Jane Lynch (Glee), Chi McBride (Pushing Daisies) and Phil Lamarr (Futurama).
The cancellation comes on the heels of other animation-related Fox news: the record-setting renewal (Season 26!) of The Simpsons, a fifth-season order for Bob’s Burgers and American Dad‘s move to TBS next season.
TVGuide.com reports that execs were displeased with early cuts of the show, but may try to shop it to cable networks.

For Ps Vita owners, Gravity Rush is definitely one of the more notable system exclusives. The open-world fantasy adventure, featuring an amnesiac named Kat who has the power to manipulate the force of gravity around her, was an original concept that was generally well-received by critics. Kat has since made playable appearances as Dlc for both PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and the latest Hot Shots Golf title, and now, it looks like she may once again be taking center stage in another game.

Two weeks from now Sdcc 2013 will be winding down, so are there enough horror offerings to entice attendees back to the show for Day 4 (July 21)? With "Supernatural" kicking things off bright and early, we say, "Yes!"
Also on the schedule for Sunday (traditionally the family-themed day of the event) are "Under the Dome," an update on the adaptation of George R.R. Martin's werewolf/Pi/serial killer mashup novella The Skin Trade, a chance to build your own monster, surviving in a post-apocalyptic world, a Neil Gaiman Spotlight panel, a look at what's coming from Diamond Select Toys, a how-to on creating suspenseful, exciting, anxiety-inducing stories, and per usual, a screening of "Buffy the Musical: Once More with Feeling" to close things out.
Since the horror offerings are so light, we've expanded our Day 4 highlights list to cover such topics as the future of sci-fi novels, the 50th anniversary of "Doctor Who,...

Sort of just a general topic podcast today with no real focus though we delve into the death of James Gandolfini off the top, Jim Carrey's thoughts on violence in Kick-Ass 2, today's new DVD and Blu-ray releases, listing off some of our favorite movies and Laremy is asked to green light one of two sequels based on the stats for the first film. Which one will he give the greenc I want to remind you that you can call in and leave us your comments, thoughts, questions, etc. directly on our Google Voice account, which you can call and leave a message for us at (925) 526-5763, which may be even easier to remember at (925) 5-bnl-pod. Just call, leave us a voice mail and we'll add those to the show and respond directly. An alternative to that option is a new way of leaving us a voicemail directly from your computer.

My introduction to punk rock came around 1980. I was in Grade 5 and some of my friends had started getting into it, gathering in bedrooms to listen to someone's copy of "Never Mind The Bollocks," "Here's The Sex Pistols" or "The Clash." I envied their newfound commitment to the fashion and the attitude. I liked the music and I wanted to be a part of the scene, too. But I couldn't.
I liked Rush.
It's not that being a Rush fan was ever cause for being ostracized. It was almost unavoidable, especially if you were a kid from southern Ontario at that time. I was reminded of that recently after spotting a "Yyz" license plate while driving into Toronto one day on the 401. Rush just rocked, plain and simple, and were an essential addition to the steady diet of Led Zeppelin, The Who and Jimi Hendrix passed down from our elders.
