In 1937, Walt Disney was desperate to find a way to make “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,”the first feature-length animated movie ever made, actually feel like a feature-length movie. He’d been doing his best to ignore the naysayers who christened the very idea of the film as “Disney’s folly.” But they did trigger a nagging concern for the 35-year-old studio chief: Audiences might reject an animated movie if it remained stuck in the realm of the flat, two-dimensional shorts that had propelled Mickey Mouse to worldwide celebrity.
“People said, ‘Nobody will sit through an hour-and-90-minute cartoon,’” Becky Cline, director of the Walt Disney archives, tells Variety. “‘Their eyes will start bleeding.’”
So Disney decided to do the thing that had served him so well since he and his brother Roy founded the Walt Disney Co. (originally the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio) in 1923: Innovate.

When I was a kid, I remember hearing about the Disney Vault. Every once in a while, movies and shows would be brought in and out of this vault, apparently for special occasions. But this was very much a marketing tool to drum up the popularity of classic productions from The Walt Disney Company. There wasn't a literal vault where these things were kept ... right?
Well, in a way, there actually is a "Disney Vault." The Walt Disney Archives is an initiative that was started by Roy O. Disney in 1970 in order to collect and preserve the legacy of the company started by his brother. Over 50 years later, this archive (largely due to the groundwork laid by original Disney archivist Dave Smith) has assembled integral pieces of history from the House of Mouse's existence like props, costumes, and documents and ensures that they're kept safe and intact for future generations to enjoy.

Walt Disney Co. Archives director Becky Cline has spent the past several months shuttling between the studio’s Burbank lot and Philadelphia, where a sprawling exhibit is debuting in February as part of the conglomerate’s yearlong 100th anniversary celebration in 2023. After Philly’s famed Franklin Institute, Disney100: The Exhibition will embark on a global five-year tour. The 15,000-square-foot spectacle will showcase more than 250 items, including Mickey Mouse sketches through the years, the storybook seen in 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and the snow globe from 1964’s Mary Poppins, not to mention Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and Pixar paraphernalia.

It is easy, perhaps, to take Mickey Mouse for granted, both as an icon and a character. His image, as Disney parks fans will tell you, is everywhere: on the sides of buildings, in nooks and crannies, on t-shirts, in flower beds, up in the clouds.
Though omnipresent, Mickey has had a rich, tumultuous journey, on and off screen, and Jeff Malmberg’s new documentary “Mickey: The Story of a Mouse” takes viewers on a winding road through Mickey’s almost 100-year-old journey.
In 1928, a pioneering little critter manned a river steamboat in a charming little animated musical titled “Steamboat Willie” — the first of its kind to be set to sound. He was industrious, charming and whimsical, without being conniving, precocious or silly. This was Mickey Mouse, who’d been previously introduced in a short called “Plane Crazy,...

“Neck ‘n’ Neck,” a short animated film created by Walt Disney in 1928, has been discovered in Japan (via The Telegraph). The black-and-white short, previously thought to be lost, features the character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and runs two minutes. Disney created Oswald in 1927, just a year before Mickey Mouse turned him and his company into one of the world’s most beloved animated studios.
In a rather humorous twist, “Neck ‘n’ Neck” had not been lost this entire time; quite the opposite, as Japan’s Yasushi Watanabe has had a print of the short ever since he purchased it as a high schooler from a toy wholesalers’ market in the city of Osaka. Watanabe, now 84 years old, didn’t realize he had a lost Disney short film in his possession until he read David Bossert’s 2017 book “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit: The Search for the Lost Disney Cartoons.” The book...

Sky Movies Disney launched this time last week and to mark the occasion, they were kind enough to set up an interview with Director of the Disney Archive, Becky Cline. Becky has worked at the Disney Archive for 30 years and has seen it change hugely over that time. I got to chat with her about her experiences working withwq exciting props, concept art and costumes.

Disney fans, Twitter followers and the media have speculated on the contents of a box labeled 1952 that Pixar Animation Studios writer-director Brad Bird and writer-producer David Lindelof posted on their personal Twitter accounts. With all of the hype surrounding the box, Walt Disney Archives Director Becky Cline worked with D23: The Official Disney Fan Club to unravel some of the riddles in the mysterious box. The teaming came after Walt Disney Studios announced Bird and Lindelof’s new movie, which will be released on December 19, 2014, changed its name from ’1952′ to ‘Tomorrowland.’ Cline offered some insight into the contents of the box: 1. We revealed last week that the ultra-secretive “1952″ project George Clooney is starring in for Disney is actually called Tomorrowland, and photos of a box of miscellaneous … uh, stuff that supposedly inspired the film were tweeted by filmmaker Brad Bird and co-writer Damon Lindelof.
What’s in the box, (as a fellow once asked?)
Official Disney fan club D23 has posted some analysis via Disney archives director Becky Cline, exploring just what’s in the image, though they don’t seem to have access to sift through the actual box just yet.
One mystery the group has solved is who is...

The Walt Disney Studios' live-action project, previously known as 1952, has been retitled Tomorrowland. The film will be released domestically on December 19th, 2014. George Clooney (The Descendants) is set to star. Tomorrowland is written by Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird from a concept by Lindelof and Jeff Jensen. Lindelof (Star Trek, Lost, Prometheus) will produce and Bird (The Incredibles, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol) will produce and direct. Last week director Bird revealed a photo (pictured to the right) featuring items that were used as inspiration for the project. Now, the Official Disney Fan Club (D23) turned to Walt Disney Archives Director Becky Cline to breakdown what exactly the contents are: 1) From the age, type, and conditions of the items I can see, I feel that...

The mastermind behind the upcoming Disney sequel was joined by comic writers Peter David and Marv Wolfman to talk about bringing Mickey back during this Sdcc roundtable discussion.
"Your play style is really, really going to matter." This from Warren Spector, who's been shepherding the sequel to consoles for its release this winter.
The last couple of months have kind of been a second coming out party for Epic Mickey. Spector, gaming legend and VP of Junction Point Studios, acknowledged that the audience for the Wii exclusive first game wasn't exactly large--that's why the Junction Point team created the newly-released intro video that elaborates on the story of the first game while setting up the second, which is coming to the PS3, 360, and Wii.
And that intro serves as a nice stylistic bridge between classic Disney (exemplified by the game's other hero, Oswald the Rabbit) and the musical stylings of...

Sunday July 15th is the last day of Comic-Con 2012, and most of us will be completely worn out looking like Spider-Man in the image above. Chances are he's asleep under that mask. Sunday has always been a cool down day for us, we kind of just try to relax a little bit more and enjoy it. That doesn't mean their isn't anything to see or do though!
We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.
Just a little reminder, we will be having our annual GeekTyrant meet up this year to meet our readers, which is something we always enjoy doing! That will take place on Wednesday night, and...

Los Angeles — One of Walt Disney's oldest drawings is seeing the light of day after being locked away for nearly 40 years.
A rough 1928 image of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, the wacky predecessor to Mickey Mouse, was brought out of the Walt Disney Co. archive this week and showcased at an event unveiling "Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two," an upcoming action-adventure game for the Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 that allows players to control both Mickey and Oswald.
The mischievous Oswald was co-created by Disney before Mickey, but he was lost in a 1928 contract dispute with Universal Studios. Oswald hopped back to Disney in 2006 when CEO Bob Iger brokered a deal that sent sportscaster Al Michaels to Universal-nbc. Oswald's first appearance since his return came in 2010's "Epic Mickey" as the ruler of a forgotten realm.
