Suffice it to say that Avatar: The Way of Water commanded the Visual Effects Society’s attention. James Cameron box office-smash sequel scored a record 14 nominations for the 2023 Ves Awards, which were announced today.
Helped by three noms in the Emerging Technology category, Disney’s The Way of Water topped the single-year noms haul by Disney+’s The Mandalorian in 2021. It also shattered the old high-water mark for films, set by — no big surprise here — the original Avatar, which amassed 11 noms in 2010.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (Netflix)
The proportions of his eponymous stop-motion character are gangly and childlike, in the words of Guillermo del Toro. “They lend themselves to these sort of haphazard rhythms of walking and running that are very endearing. In his apparent simplicity, is a very complex work of design keeping those few elements alive and on top with the raw wood that is simulating hair and branches, and the nails on his back are very expressive and unique and feel almost elemental.” Director Mark Gustafson points out that in the story, he’s carved by a drunken Geppetto making Pinocchio “very primitive in some ways, unfinished, naked, and exposed. That was what we needed for him to go out into the world with. He can’t hide anything. That’s the nature of innocence. You’re wearing it all on the outside and that’s what this character does.

These are curious days for feature animation. Netflix scaled back its plans in the arena, while two years of releases straight to Disney+ during Covid and under Bob Chapek seem to have seriously devalued the once unstoppable Disney/Pixar animation empire. Universal, though, enjoyed one of the biggest hits ever with the near 1 billion juggernaut “Minions: The Rise of Gru” and also landed the year’s second-biggest animated release with “The Bad Guys.”
Still, animation at the box office and animation in the awards race are two very different things, and it’s unlikely that Academy voters will be checking the grosses as they review the 27 qualifying films in this year’s Best Animated Feature race at the Oscars.
Those 27 include movies from big, traditional studios like Disney/Pixar, Universal’s DreamWorks Animation, Warner Bros. and 20th Century (now part of Disney) – but also a handful of international productions from GKids,...

As awards season shifts into high gear, acclaimed directors, actors, producers, screenwriters, composers, animators and more — headlined by the likes of directors Steven Spielberg, Ron Howard and Ryan Coogler — joined Variety for the virtual FYC Fest, dedicated to highlighting this year’s most celebrated films. Over the course of multiple panels, Variety editors and writers spoke with the creatives behind some of this year’s biggest awards season contenders about how their critically-lauded films came to be.
Here are the six biggest takeaways from this year’s virtual FYC Fest.
‘Big’ Movies Don’t Have to Be Action Blockbusters
During the Making of “The Fabelmans” panel, director Steven Spielberg was joined by many of the film’s creatives, such as producer Kristie Macosko, editor Michael Kahn and more, to talk about how they brought the longtime director’s autobiographical story to life. With The Bad Guys, director Pierre Perifel found the perfect opportunity to blend together all of his childhood inspirations for a family-friendly animated heist film. Based on a children’s graphic novel series, the film follows a group of animal criminals, Mr. Wolf (Sam Rockwell), Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina), Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson) and Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos). After getting caught, Mr. Wolf makes a play to escape prison time by claiming that the group wants a chance to reform themselves into good guys. Though it starts as a ruse, Mr. Wolf soon finds himself excited by the opportunity to become a good guy. While the book series begins with the group having already decided to be good guys, Perifel wanted the film to be an origin story of how they came to that choice.

In the early days of the Academy’s animated feature Oscar, there were questions as to whether enough films would qualify each year for the award to be given. Not anymore! This year sees a record number of contenders across a wide variety of genres, styles and audiences, from serious, adult-targeted films (like “Charlotte” and “Eternal Spring”) to boffo offerings from Hollywood’s top toon studios — and that doesn’t even count such anime franchise sensations as “One Piece Film: Red” and “Jujutsu Kaisen 0,” which didn’t submit but further illustrate the vitality of the form.

As December approaches, Netflix is giving the well-reviewed Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio a high-profile debut.
Netflix Animation — despite its challenging year on the business side — has a strong and varied slate of animated feature contenders, the most notable being del Toro’s moving stop-motion retelling of Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio, which is having a limited theatrical rollout ahead of its Dec. 9 streaming debut.
Netflix burst onto the animation scene in 2019, releasing its first original animated feature, the Christmas movie Klaus, directed by Sergio Pablos, as well as French film I Lost My Body, from Jérémy Clapin. Both movies earned Oscar nominations in 2020, and Netflix has had at least one category nomination each year since. It did win an animated short Oscar in 2021, for If Anything Happens I Love You, but the streaming service is still vying for its first animated feature category win.

In order to achieve the stylized look for his film, “The Bad Guys,” Pierre Perifel knew that he first needed to capture the layout of Los Angeles. “All those lens flare and the white skies, the dusty city and the layering of the city and stuff like that. We wanted to incorporate this but also using all the tropes of the heist films,” he tells Gold Derby during our Meet the Experts: Film Animation panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).
He adds that a lot of this comes through with the cinematography that’s seen in the film. “We used a lot of long shots, like long camera relays between characters and situations. We used split screens making sure that you have fun transitions between the characters and situations when we’re talking about all the heist sequences that we did.”

Annecy this year is all about innovation, in animation style – seen in the villain of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” unveiled on Monday – in Europe’s push into adult animation, and even in new ways of connecting with audiences, as DreamWorks Animation has demonstrated in a joyous and packed open air screening of “The Bad Guys.”

Sunday Am Writethru: After Saturday Am update As the pandemic eases and the town questions what works on the big screen, the answers are largely family films, even if they are dated three weekends in a row. We’re talking about Universal/Dreamworks Animation’s overperformance of its 69M production The Bad Guys, which is notching a solid debut of 24M and a great A CinemaScore. Per EntTelligence, the Pierre Perifel-directed animated movie drew 2.1M admissions. In a crowded weekend at the domestic box office that includes northmen and fantastic beasts and Nicolas Cage — oh my! — “The Bad Guys” has risen above the competition. The DreamWorks Animation film is projected to take the weekend’s top slot in its opening.
Universal’s “The Bad Guys” is projected to open to 25 million from 4,009 locations — more than enough to land at No. 1. Although that figure is a ways away from the film’s production budget of 70 million, it’s a promising start for a prospective first entry in a family-friendly franchise. “The Bad Guys” is already exceeding box office projections, which had predicted an opening weekend between 15 million and 20 million. That would’ve placed the film in a tight battle with theatrical holdovers “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.”

Reviews have been largely favorable for “The Bad Guys,” with the DreamWorks production currently...

There’s a classic sound to heist films, especially of the ’60s and ’70s – a little jazzy, a little stealthy, occasionally raucous and wild – and composer Daniel Pemberton cleverly channels it throughout “The Bad Guys,” the DreamWorks Animation action comedy that opens today.
“The film in some ways is an homage to classic caper movies,” says the English composer, “and it’s a world I really love playing in. You get to be really bold: big breaks, big brass sections, big tunes and big grooves.”
Pemberton’s high-energy music sets the mood and drives the action in Pierre Perifel’s animated adventure about a notorious criminal gang that considers going straight after they cross paths with a guinea-pig philanthropist and their red-fox governor.
“At its core, it’s a very joyous score, even though there’s sneakiness, tension, all that kind of stuff,” he notes. He cites Quincy Jones’ “The Italian Job,...

The influence of “Into the Spider-Verse” continues to infiltrate the Hollywood mainstream, with DreamWorks’ latest heist comedy, “The Bad Guys,” following in the footsteps of “The Mitchells vs. The Machines,” “Luca,” and “Turning Red” to subvert CG animation with a handmade, illustrated look. First-time feature director Pierre Perifel definitely wanted to break through the “boring” with more stylization for his adaptation of the popular Scholastic book series by Aaron Blabey.
Perifel previously worked as an animator on “Kung Fu Panda 2” (which contained a 2D-animated sequence) and co-directed the DreamWorks short “Bilby” (which had some graphic touches). But after the handmade fur and felt vibe for the “Trolls” films, DreamWorks was ready to double down on 2D stylization for “The Bad Guys.”
Best described as “Zootopia” meets “Oceans 11,” “The Bad Guys” features a crew of animal outlaws attempting to go straight — until they’re framed for the heist of a rare meteorite.

Los Angeles’ ubiquitous smog, freeways, beaches and palm trees — as well as its place in moviedom — were all influential elements as filmmaker Pierre Perifel and production designer Luc Desmarchelier huddled over where to set DreamWorks’ latest animation, “The Bad Guys,” in theaters April 22.
Based on the children’s book series by Aaron Blabey about a group of animals — a wolf, a snake, a shark, a tarantula and a piranha — that are always portrayed as criminal types but are trying hard to reform here, Desmarchelier says the script didn’t define where the action would be taking place. So when conceiving ideas, he looked at Chicago and New York as potential settings for the gang’s last heist.
But the production designer says he and Perifel ultimately landed on a reimagined version of the City of Angels because inspirations from cop and heist movies and TV shows had a gravitational pull.

“The Northman,” a blood-drenched viking epic from director Robert Eggers, pillaged 1.35 million from 2,700 theaters in Thursday previews, while “The Bad Guys,” a kid-friendly spin on the heist genre, earned 1.15 million from 3,000 theaters.
Those aren’t the only new wide releases in town; they will also have to fend off “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” a very meta exercise in which Nicolas Cage stars as himself. It picked up 835,000 in Thursday previews from 3,036 theaters.
Universal’s indie label Focus released “The Northman,” which is projected to earn 10 million to 15 million in its first three days of release. That would be a strong result for an arthouse film, save for the fact that “The Northman” reportedly cost 90 million to make (insiders say that with tax credits that figure is closer to 70 million). That’s an awful lot of lucre. Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk and Willem Dafoe star in the film.

“The Northman,” Focus Features’ Viking revenge epic from acclaimed director Robert Eggers, made 1.35 million in its Thursday preview screenings at the box office across 2,700 theaters with previews that began at 7 p.m. “The Northman” opens on 3,214 screens this weekend.
Universal’s animated family film “The Bad Guys,” which is expected to lead the box office, made 1.15 million Thursday from preview screenings beginning at 5:00 p.m. at 3,000 theaters. It opens on approximately 4,000 screens this weekend.
And finally, “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent,” Lionsgate’s meta comedy starring Nicolas Cage as Nicolas Cage, brought in 835K in its preview screenings Thursday. It will open Friday in 3,036 North American locations.
All three films have been very well reviewed, yet early projections are low for all three, with “The Bad Guys” tracking for a start in the mid-teens, “The Northman” at 10-12 million and “Massive Talent” at a disappointing 6-7 million.

“The Bad Guys” are here.
Based on the book series by Australian author Aaron Blabey, DreamWorks Animation’s “The Bad Guys” follows a group of animal criminals – Mr. Wolf aka the Big Bad Wolf (Sam Rockwell), Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina), Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson) and Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos) — as they try to turn the corner and become (gasp!) good guys.
Director Pierre Perifel brings a wonderfully offbeat sensibility to the movie, which could have been another villain-goes-straight animated fable, of which there have been plenty. By folding in a range of influences (everything from anime to Steven Soderbergh) and upping the stylization to incorporate more 2D flourishes, “The Bad Guys” feels wholly unique and might be the most enjoyable DreamWorks Animation film since “How to Train Your Dragon” back in 2010.

As Spring slowly arrives, the multiplex makes way for a new family-friendly animated feature film. Now, this one’s got an interesting twist, a “spin” on a firmly established trope of the “cartoon conflict’. Well, it’s not a “skewed’ satiric fairy tale or fable but rather goes further back, before the features, to those “much-missed” theatrical shorts. Very often they dealt with a chase, usually a pursuit with a predator animal trying to capture its (not so defenseless) prey. In the world of Looney Tunes, Sylvester is after Tweety while the Coyote was always several steps behind that Roadrunner. But what about shifting the focus from the “heroes” to the “villains”, to a team of “nogoodniks” who somehow want to change? Or do they? Can they really “flip” their “nature” or must they remain The Bad Guys?

This review for “The Bad Guys” was originally published on March 29, 2022.
Billed as “a caper,” there’s something refreshingly old-fashioned and simple about “The Bad Guys.”
No singing, no dancing, no moral lessons — it’s just a cartoon, with fast-talking, wise-cracking animals, lots of silly car chases and a host of fart gags.
Based on the comic books by Australian author Aaron Blabey and riffing on the heist-movie genre, “The Bad Guys” follows a band of bank-robbing villains. They’re not so much Reservoir Dogs as Mr. Wolf, Mr. Snake, Mr. Piranha, Mr. Shark, and Ms. Tarantula who, in public penance for their criminal ways, are sworn to go straight. For a bit.
Half the fun is trying to work out who’s doing the voice work. In a knowing nod to the “Ocean’s” movies, the handsome, silver-grey Mr. Wolf is continually being likened in the script to George Clooney,...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review on “The Bad Guys,” the latest cartoony film from Dreamworks Animation, featuring the voices of Sam Rockwell, Awkafina, Alex Borstein and Zazie Beetz, among others, and in theaters on April 22nd.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
This a take-off of Oceans 11, populated with what the world considers the villains of the animal kingdom, portrayed as a gang of robbers … the leader is Mr. Wolf (voice of Sam Rockwell), aided by Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina), Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos) and Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson). They steal at will, much to the chagrin of Los Angeles Police Chief Misty (Alex Borstein) and Governor Foxington (Zazie Beetz), who vow to bring them to justice. When a guinea pig named Professor Marmalade (Richard Ayoade) is about to receive a golden trophy as a “good guy” prize, the gang has to steal it, which gives the professor...

Is it truly a marketplace for branded tentpoles and uber low-budget fare at the box office as the pandemic eases? And is everything in between just future programming for a streamer?
Surely if you ask any filmmaker, established or budding, they truly don’t want their art lost to obscurity in a streaming queue, or worse, to have their movie’s demand be tied to algorithm.
This weekend, three movies aimed at families and guys aged 18-34 will hopefully expand the theatrical marketplace, that is before Disney/Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sucks up all the air. DreamWorks Animation/Universal’s original villain movie The Bad Guys looks to do the best out of three with 15 million, while Focus Features’ Robert Eggers’ violent 70M Viking epic The Northman is eyeing between 8M-12M, and Lionsgate’s Nicolas Cage satire The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent is...

Based on the graphic novel series by Australian author Aaron Blabey, Pierre Perifel's upcoming animated feature "The Bad Guys" is about a team of anthropomorphic animals who traditionally play villainous roles in classic fairy tales. The animals live in modern-day Los Angeles alongside humans, and they spend their days planning heists and committing crimes before realizing they might want to try being good for a change. Sam Rockwell voices Mr. Wolf (of the "big bad" variety), who runs a criminal gang that includes Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina), Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson), and Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos). As far as kid movies go, The Bad Guys is one of the more welcome diversions of the year. The film is a slick and funny caper for the pre-teen set that is blessed with a cast of talented actors and animation that is so much fun that it almost makes the fart jokes forgivable.
Based on the graphic novel series by Aaron Blabey, the story focuses on a group of anthropomorphized animals led by Wolf (Sam Rockwell). The gang is feared across their city because of their unending string of robberies. When a mission goes awry, Wolf makes a bet with Governor Foxington (Zazie Beetz) that his pals can go straight and win the city’s affections. It’s all a ruse to get his hands on a priceless bauble, but it’s not long before Wolf learns that being a good boy might just be more enjoyable than being a bad dog.

In DreamWorks’ “The Bad Guys,” Marc Maron voices Mr. Snake, the second-in-command of a group of criminal animals attempting to pull off a major heist. However, Maron admitted to Variety at the film’s premiere on Tuesday in Los Angeles that he doesn’t like animated movies.
“I’m not a big animated movie guy, my sense of animation goes back to when I was in high school and Ralph Bakshi’s ‘Wizards’ came out,” Maron said, referencing the 1977 sci-fi film. “So my point of reference is a little stale. But this one was good!”
And then later this year, Maron will be voicing legendary comic book villain Lex Luthor in “DC League of Super-Pets.” “They wanted me to be dry and sarcastic,” Maron said. “So I played it kind of like me, but with a little more of a bite. That one, I didn’t even realize it was a big movie.

It is quite surprising that the big animation studios have not picked up on and adapted Australian author Aaron Blabey’s series of children’s illustrated books The Bad Guys long before now, because it centres on a gang of anthropomorphic animals known as the Bad Guys who try to do good deeds to change society’s perception of them as scary criminals that usually fail. The material is ready-made, big-screen gold – and a genius one at that.
Thanks to French animator and director Pierre Perifel we now have The Bad Guys, the movie that not only gives a faithful nod to the sketchy animated style of the books, but also as offers oodles of fun, a brilliant dynamic group of characters based on animals, reptiles and fish that we all naturally fear, plus endless points for family discussion post viewing, including the dangers and damage of societal labelling on first impressions.

Tuesday Update, writethru: After setting a new opening day record for a local title in India on Friday, S.S. Rajamouli’s Rrr (Rise! Roar! Revolt!) continued a strong run in the home market throughout the weekend and picked up an estimated $60M+ globally. Of that, $16M is from outside of India (including $9.5M in North America).
Getting reliable numbers out of India is challenging — there is no centralized reporting system, and it gets even more ornery when a movie is released in several different language versions. However, as we reported on Sunday, the estimate is holding at about $46M (348 crore) for the weekend, coming in just behind Rajamouli’s previous record-setter, Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. Globally, comScore is reporting a $63.2M weekend in 21 markets (including North America and India). Some estimates have the worldwide gross on either side of that.
Either way, Rrr was the No. 1 movie worldwide this weekend.

It’s a problem that has plagued countless kids’ movies — and more than a few grownup ones — over the course of film history: The villain is conceived and performed with such lip-smacking relish that the nominal hero seems a simpering drag to be around by comparison. Conscious of that perennial imbalance, “The Bad Guys” takes a simple solution and multiplies it, making a sympathetic protagonist of not just one supposedly dastardly antagonist, but several. Taking five anthropomorphised animals generally portrayed as violent terrors in the cartoon world — led by a big bad wolf, no less — and centering them as a chummy, lovable criminal collective, this bouncy debut feature from French animator Pierre Perifel gets a lot of value out of that neat high concept. As it steers them to the right side of the law, however, it still can’t convince us that good guys have more fun.
