The Pogues’ “Fairytale of New York” has been a left-field Christmas classic since Shane MacGowan and Kirsty MacColl first sang it in 1987, but this year — three weeks after MacGowan’s death (and 23 years since MacColl’s) — the song feels more maudlin. The Libertines recently gave the song a couple of performances in tribute.
In the first, the group’s Pete Doherty and Carl Barât recorded a typically free-wheeling performance and posted it to Instagram, leaning deep into the tune’s natural sodden sentimentality. “Rip Shane, this one’s for you,...

Pete Doherty has opened up about how years of drug and alcohol abuse have ravaged his health. During an appearance on the BBC series Louis Theroux Interviews (via The Independent), The Libertines frontman explained how it feels like death is “lurking.”
“You are looking at a very sick man, I’ve battered it, haven’t I, I’ve fucking caned it,” Doherty said after he got up to take a swig of blackcurrant rum, which caused him to start coughing and clutch his chest. “[The] heroin and the crack… I surrendered to that, and then it was cocaine and the smoking and the alcohol, and now it’s cheese and the saucisson, and the sugar in the tea. It’s all gotta go.”
He continued by sharing how doctors had urged him to change his lifestyle. “They told me a little while ago if you don’t change your diet then...

Doc following the Libertines star, made by his wife, is unsparing in showing his struggles with drug addiction but shies away from other personal stories
As Spinal Tap’s David St Hubbins once argued, it is possible to have too much perspective; but perhaps there isn’t quite enough perspective in this documentary about the iconic rock star and songwriter Pete Doherty (who in the title goes by the more mature “Peter”), former frontman of the Libertines and Babyshambles. The film is directed by Doherty’s wife Katia DeVidas, although the actual story of their relationship or any of Doherty’s previous relationships does not feature here; of course, it could be that Doherty and DeVidas understandably reject the tabloid prurience associated with that whole subject. The film also passes in silence over the tragic case of Mark Blanco, who in 2006 died after falling from the balcony of an east...

The Libertines are officially back. The on-again, off-again British rockers have announced All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade, their first album in eight years, and shared its lead single, “Run, Run, Run.” Listen to the track below.
Spanning 11 tracks and produced by Dimitri Tikovoï, All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade arrives in full on March 8th. “Our first record was born out of panic, and disbelief that we were actually allowed to be in a studio; the second was born of total strife and misery; the third was born of complexity; this one feels like we were all actually in the same place, at the same speed, and we really connected,” said Carl Barât in a statement.
With rousing hand claps and a blown-out, singalong chorus, “Run, Run, Run” takes you straight back to The Libertines’ garage rock revival glory days. “Tonight we’re gonna bring tomorrow’s happiness/ Gonna...

“Hesitation Wound” and “Hollywoodgate” were named winners at the Zurich Film Festival, as the 19th edition of the Swiss festival came to a close.
Selman Nacar’s drama “Hesitation Wound” impressed the Feature Film Competition jury.
“Moral issues are a frequent underlying theme in many films, but the dilemma facing the main character in this film is really strongly felt here,” argued the jury, which comprised president Anton Corbijn, Finola Dwyer, Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, Juho Kuosmanen and Bryce Nielsen.
Praising “wonderful” Tülin Özen, cast as a lawyer struggling at home and at work – “a woman forever on the verge of either breakthrough or breakdown,” wrote Variety – they added: “It’s a film that stayed with the majority of the jury throughout the festival and even though it was a fight with two other contenders, it became our favorite. Jessica Chastain will receive the Zurich Film Festival’s Golden Icon Award.
Chastain will present her latest film “Memory” at the festival alongside director Michel Franco and co-star Peter Sarsgaard on Oct. 1. The film bowed at Venice where Sarsgaard won best actor.
“Memory” follows Sylvia (Chastain), a social worker who leads a simple and structured life revolving around her daughter, her job and her AA meetings. This is disrupted when Saul (Sarsgaard) follows her home from their high school reunion. Their encounter profoundly impacts both of them as they open the door to the past.
In an interview with Variety, Franco had said: “Jessica is possibly the best actress in the states right now, it’s not an exaggeration to say she’s the best actress in the world.”

Van Morrison has said that he wants to start looking at alternative outlets to release the “mountain of material” he has ready to go.
The 77-year-old singer, best known for hits such as “Brown Eyed Girl”, “Moondance” and “Crazy Love” said that he’s had to stop himself writing new songs, because he has so many already.
Morrison is releasing his forthcoming album Moving on Skiffle in March – marking his 44th studio record.
The legendary artist says that traditional labels are only able to put out a few records each year, which doesn’t cater for the amount of music he wants to release.
"It’s been a problem getting records out, so I’ve been looking at other alternative outlets,” said Morrision while being interviewed by Billy Bragg for the April issue of Mojo magazine.

Pete Doherty made a rare TV appearance on Channel 4 comedy talk show The Last Leg on Friday night (24 February).
The Libertines frontman, 43, performed The Pogues’ 1985 classic “Dirty Old Town”, changing the one of the lyrics to “brudne stare misto”, which is Ukrainian for “dirty old town”.
At the end of the song, he smiled and shouted “slava Ukraini!”, meaning “glory to Ukraine”.
Friday was the one-year anniversary of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. The number of Ukrainian civilians killed in the war with Russia could be as high as 100,000, with both sides suffering tens of thousands of military casualties.
Millions of Ukrainians have either been displaced or left homeless 12 months on since Russian tanks rolled across the border.
During Doherty’s appearance on the show, he also told an anecdote about hosting two Russian artists at his London home.
“When they were in London I put them up,” he said.

Former enfant terrible of British rock Peter Doherty and keyboard playing producer-filmmaker wife Katia de Vidas gave a surprise private concert at the Les Arcs Film Festival in the French Alps on Monday evening.
The couple – who perform under the Pete Doherty and The Puta Madres banner – took to the stage at the closing night party of the festival’s four-day Industry Village.

Doherty and de Vidas first connected with Les Arcs last year after it showcased de Vidas’s documentary Stranger In My Body in its Works in Progress (Wip) event in 2021.

It started with a blood-curdling scream: “Geeeettaaouttofit!” Pete Doherty’s visceral howl opens “Up The Bracket”, the lead single from The Libertines’ debut album of the same name. Released 20 years ago, on 21 October 2002, the record was an unruly, triumphant beast that revived British guitar music from its post-Britpop doldrums and gave the country an answer to the New Rock Revolution being led in the United States by The Strokes and The White Stripes. The accompanying music video made bright red military tunics an instant indie fashion staple, while a nondescript alleyway in Bethnal Green became a site of pilgrimage for dedicated fans. “That’s still going on now,” notes Carl Barât, whose volatile partnership with Doherty formed the nucleus of the band. “I think the council cover over [the graffiti] every year, but it keeps coming back. What a funny time that was. The video concept was, ‘We’ll bring the cameras...

Pete Doherty is releasing a documentary chronicling the addiction issues he experienced at the height of his fame.
The 90-minute film, Peter Doherty: Stranger In My Own Skin, comes from more than 200 hours of footage filmed over a 10-year period by his partner, the director-musician Katia deVidas.
Launching at the Cannes event Mipcom, the documentary will explore the former Libertines frontman’s addictions to heroin, crack cocaine and ketamine.
Doherty said: “The talent is the man and comes from the man and comes from the artist and doesn’t come from the drugs, and has never come from the drugs.
“Part of the fun and the challenge of creating is to create in spite of circumstances, so, in spite of being a drug addict, or in spite of being clean. I will create.”
DeVidas said: “The camera captures souls, looks, truths – mostly lost ones, along with intense moments of the sort that are usually hidden.

Sofia Olins’ doc tells the story of the festival’s mythical party area where drag, drugs and debauchery were unrivalled
Here is a documentary that should provide a balm of sorts to anyone pining for Glastonbury in a fallow year for the festival – though one whose charms might be somewhat lost on non-attendees. It tells the story of new-age traveller Roy Gurvitz, who in the early 2000s founded the bacchanalian late-night area Lost Vagueness, a move that invigorated the festival just as it was lurching into irrelevance.
Featuring everything from ballroom dancing to drag shows and gruesome displays of body horror performance art, the area soon became the stuff of legend among festivalgoers – not to mention tabloid editors, who thrilled to the (false) rumours that Kate Moss and Pete Doherty had got hitched in the area’s Chapel of Love. Soon Lost Vagueness was an all-purpose alternative party behemoth in its own right,...

The way John Cale tells it, he had a revelation one day in the mid-Sixties. He’d dedicated the majority of his first two decades to classical and avant-garde music, to such an extent that, he says dryly, “I may have missed out on my puberty.

The Libertines released their third album, Anthems for Doomed Youth, on Friday, news that has been greeted with breathless coverage in the U.K. press, and a resounding "Who?" on this side of the Atlantic. The band's relative lack of a following in the U.S. has always been the biggest joke about them among American fans — as this very site asked in 2010, "Does Anyone in America Care About a Libertines Reunion?" Even among the brief lifespans that defined '00s indie rock, the Libertines' discography is notably sparse; the new album increases their number of original LPs by 50 percent. (More fun stats: When the band's greatest-hits album was released in 2007, it contained almost one third of their official recorded output.) The question "Who were the Libertines?" has two equally correct answers. The first, more objectively true answer is four names: Pete Doherty, Carl Barât, John Hassall, and Gary Powell.

The lads' highly anticipated third album, Anthem for Doomed Youth, will be released in September. Until then, you have this infectious indie headbanger (those opening guitar riffs! Lots of "oh la la la"s!) and "Gunga Din" to get your Pete Doherty and Carl Barât fix. We have a feeling Alex Turner is sitting in a lightless room somewhere, slowly calculating his next move.

Amy Winehouse. Amy Winehouse documentary: 'Heartbreaking' and 'impressive' In an era of disposable pop music, the songs of the late Amy Winehouse feel timeless. Her sound spans the decades: bluesy and jazzy, a little bit punk and a little bit gansta. She was an old soul belting out new school lyrics that were confessional, profane, clever, and withering. She has been compared to Billie Holiday (in more ways than one, alas) and Winehouse herself has noted Sarah Vaughn as an influence. Her phrasing could turn any note into an adventure, bending and stretching it until it made multiple emotional statements. Her voice was both propulsive and brittle with a vibrato that could pound like a jackhammer or purr like Eartha Kitt. And that's to say nothing of her signature look, the beehive hairdo, the tattoos, and the increasingly garish makeup that would eventually hide much more than facial blemishes. Unfortunately,...

Never Mind the Buzzcocks has been cancelled after 28 series, with the BBC confirming the much-loved show will not be returning.
The ingenious - and often hilarious - pop music panel quiz arrived on screens way back in 1996, and ran for over 260 episodes.
Hosts including Mark Lamarr, Simon Amstell and Rhod Gilbert have appeared alongside team captains Phil Jupitus, Sean Hughes, Bill Bailey and Noel Fielding. Here are some of the greatest moments.
1. Boys will be boys!
Preston took an immediate dislike to being described by Simon Amstell as a "professional celebrity" on introduction, before Amstell joked that his band The Ordinary Boys have no fans.
But it was when he began to read extracts from Preston's then-wife Chantelle Houghton's biography - with the line "The photoshoot was for the Daily Mail, which made me feel really posh and upmarket" - that he stormed off the show in disgust.

Of all the most eagerly-anticipated albums set to come out in the near future, the most desperately long-awaited must surely be the third addition to The Libertines’ relatively sparse back catalogue.
For a band of such popularity and influence over rock music in the 21st century, they haven’t treated their fans to a new release in over a decade. Much of this is down to their highly-publicised split and subsequent hiatus, but with Pete Doherty seemingly rehabilitated, and the rest of the band keen to accept him back into the fold, fans everywhere can afford to get excited once more.
And what a tortured group of fans they are. The Libertines must surely been one of the most tumultuous bands to follow, not only due to their sporadic break-ups and reformations, but also the negative images painted of them (and their fanbase) by the mainstream media.

Seth Cohen's character in The O.C. was much more than just a nerd punch-line, Wil argues, he paved the way for comic-book movie success...
We all have touchstones in adolescent life that end up shaping who we become. I’m sure we all share a few of them. Maybe it’s Holden Caulfield. Maybe it’s Kurt Cobain. Maybe it’s The Smiths or Fight Club or Ghost World. All of those had an effect on me, but I’m not ashamed to say that the one who had the biggest effect was Seth Cohen, a character in the early 2000s Fox teen soap opera The O.C.
Seth Cohen was awesome. He was awkward and read Chuck Klosterman and drew superheroes and wore the coolest t-shirts. He brought comic books, twee indie rock and snarky internet knowingness to a show few would associate with geekiness, and blasted all those things into the mainstream.

Up until now, filmmaker Gabe Turner had only made two feature films – both of which were documentaries. His previous endeavour, which he directed alongside his brother Benjamin, was The Class of ’92, an engaging, entertaining and spirited effort, that offered a profound study of British society. His latest feature, The Guvnors, attempts much of the same thing, yet sadly falls short. Unfortunately the only connection this has to The Class of ’92, is that the aforementioned year is around the same time films of this ilk felt relevant and unique.

The former child actor's pizza-themed Velvet Underground tribute band is just the latest in his long line of musical endeavours. Here's a rundown of the finest moments
• Macaulay Culkin forms pizza-themed Velvet Underground tribute band
There's an old adage that "all actors secretly want to be rock stars, and all rock stars wish they could act". I say "an old adage", what I actually mean is I heard it once and wanted to reference it but couldn't find the quote. This is presumably how all aphorisms are born.
Regardless, examples of the transition are numerous: Russell Crowe has his band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts, for which you can create your own rhyming slang joke; Joe Pesci once recorded a rap track, which is every bit what you're imagining it's like; and Billy Bob Thornton has released at least four LPs specifically targeted at a demographic of vest and tobacco-spitting enthusiasts.

It's quite been a while since the BBC show saw such a dramatic outburst from a disgruntled guest. So we present 15 similar moments of madness and controversy from the series - from Preston stomping off, to Dappy flying in - below:
Boys will be boys!
Preston took an immediate dislike to being described by Simon Amstell as a "professional celebrity" on introduction, before Amstell joked that his band The Ordinary Boys have no fans. But it was when he began to read extracts from Preston's then-wife Chantelle Houghton's biography - with the line "The photoshoot was for the Daily Mail, which made me feel really posh and upmarket" - that he stormed off the show in disgust. There are a multitude of reasons why an album can be considered an underrated gem, and they can mainly be divided into a few categories, which, as we will find out, are all bad news for Axl Rose. An act can release a terrific record, and have it immediately absorbed into a large back catalogue without acclaim, loved only by hardcore fans; they can be great as a standalone achievement but unfairly unloved by the fanbase or critics; alternatively, they are unfavourably compared to a career-best effort, or Are a career-best effort or by an act unheard of by millions. Or, most commonly, one track ruins the flow and feel of the record or it is, as a whole, one or two tracks short of being stonecold greatness.

Celebrity Big Brother is set to commence on Channel 5 this Thursday (August 22), and along with the anticipation comes the (at times ridiculous) list of rumoured celebrities - which let's face it, often outweighs the reality.
This year's reported lineup includes Saved By the Bell actor (and amateur porn star) Dustin Diamond and Return of the Mack's Mark Morrison, we take a look at some of the greatest Celebrity Big Brother stars that never were below.
Dog the Bounty Hunter
We were inconsolable following the news that TV personality Dog the Bounty Hunter would not be entering the Celebrity Big Brother house after being denied a UK visa. Yes, Dog (real name Duane Chapman) the bail bondsman was not allowed into the country due to a previous conviction. We're sure the Dog and Julie Goodyear would have got on like a house on fire.
Bobbi Kristina Brown
It was reported that Bobbi Kristina Brown,...

Los Angeles, August 2: Musician Pete Doherty reveals his son questions him about his use of drugs.
The 34-year-old singer, who admits that he still uses heroin, is worried that he isn't a positive role model for his nine-year-old son Astile, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
"I see it as a selfish lifestyle choice. My nine-year-old son, I can't be there for him," Doherty said.
"He's smart. He said to me, 'Have you just taken your medicine?' I didn't know what to say. In his eyes it's sad and wrong, you're not the attractive person a child wants you to be," he added.
The "Back from the dead" singer candidly lamented.

Often when you sit down to indulge in a biopic about somebody you find exceedingly fascinating, as soon as the picture has finished all you want to do is go and meet the subject themselves and ask countless questions about their life and the film at hand. Well, we had the great pleasure of doing just that – at a special London screening of Good Vibrations to mark its DVD release, where a certain Terri Hooley made a somewhat unforgettable appearance.
Taking place at the Vinyl Factory in Soho, the Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn production was screened to a room full of exuberant fans, who watched on as we see the life of Hooley presented to us on the big screen. With actor Richard Dormer in the lead role, Good Vibrations takes place in Belfast, Northern Ireland in the 1970s amidst The Troubles. Hooley – who took neither side in the religious conflict,...

The surprise hit of the summer has to go to the French zombie show The Returned. Over a million Brits watch the Sunday night Gallic drama and now two remakes are in the pipelines. Shameless creator Paul Abbott has brought the rights to remake it in the UK and Brad Pitt’s production company have used it as inspiration for a show of the same name. The show itself is based on a French movie called They Came Back and was the highest ratings programme ever on Canal+ (the French equivalent of HBO). It’s the first time Channel 4 have showed a fully subtitled foreign drama for 20 years and it’s worth putting down Twitter for a second to really pay attention to the screen.
The show features no household names, even to most French households, but we were hooked. Sunday was the last in the series to be...
