Who Was Nell’s Latest Obituary?
Nell was still an obituary writer for the Pasadena newspaper, the SoCal Independent. Her job profile had not changed, and she was still haunted by the ghosts of the men and women she was writing obituaries for. This time around it was a very famous realtor based in Pasadena, California, who died when he was run over by a bus. As the tenth anniversary of Glen Campbell’s Ghost on the Canvas was approaching, Dave Kaplan —whose Surfdog Records released the haunting album in 2011 — was pondering ways to honor it. A late-period landmark for Campbell, who died in 2017 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Ghost on the Canvas found the venerable pop-country singer and guitarist covering songs by a new generation of writers — alt-rock types like Paul Westerberg, Guided By Voices’ Robert Pollard, Jakob Dylan, and Teddy Thompson. The album ranked Number 88 on Rolling Stone‘s list of...

Garth Hudson, co-founder of The Band, played a rare set at a New York house party this week.
Hudson attended a house concert hosted by the musician and fellow keyboardist Sarah Perrotta. In a clip shared by Perotta, the 85-year-old Hudson is seen playing Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated Lady” on piano from his wheelchair, marking his first public performance since 2018. Check it out below.
Like the rest of The Band, Hudson got his start as a member of The Hawks, the backing band for Toronto rockabilly singer Ronnie Hawkins. After outgrowing Hawkins, the group joined Bob Dylan for his 1965 and 1966 tours, the latter known as the “electric tour.” At the time, Hudson was one of the few organists in rock and roll to play an electric Hammond organ. The Hawks joined Dylan on a number of recording sessions, though few official tracks from this period were released. They did, however,...

Bob Dylan’s 77th birthday was celebrated with a kinetic reimagining of his 1963 solo concert at New York’s Town Hall. Titled Tomorrow Is A Long Time, the May 24 event produced by Hal Willner featured a slew of talented guests — among them: contemporary performers like The Milk Carton Kids, Emily Haines and Teddy Thompson, 60’s survivors like Geoff Muldaur and Bob Neuwirth, poetess Anne Waldman and savvy stage performers like Gina Gershon, Steve Buscemi and Bill Murray — and followed the original concert’s set list, providing ardent, idiosyncratic musical settings for Dylan’s songs with barely a hint of nostalgia. Musical Director Steven Bernstein and the Town Hall Ensemble led the tribute, which was filled with humor, social commentary and an impressive range of musical styles.
While Dylan’s original concert was a solo acoustic affair, the brawny Town Hall Ensemble contained a number of amazing musicians including bandleader Bernstein on trumpet,...

I can't tell you how happy I am that so many of you were able to identify that obscure "10 Things I Hate About You" quote. It comforts me to know that so many other people know that movie down to those small, incredibly important details of Patrick's harassment of the lunch lady, Kat's alleged testicular assault on a fellow student, and the incredibly lovely and talented Miss Perky who deals with teenagers the way I probably would if I were forced to be around them all day everyday. Same little asswipe shit for brains everywhere indeed. Anyway, there appears to be some TV on tonight so I guess I'll go about describing that instead of talking about a 13 year old high school based adaptation of Shakespeare. Here's your Tuesday night TV:
8:00pm: "The Biggest Loser" on NBC
"NCIS" on CBS
"No Ordinary Family" on ABC
9:00pm: "Best in...

Sons of Anarchy's Charlie Hunnam (Jax) is making news this week with his screenplay for Vlad, the story of the real-life prince who inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula. Read our Q&A about the film and who he'd like to see cast as The Impaler here. But since we're still talking about last week's bloody season 2 finale (which just hit Hulu today), we snuck in a few questions about that as well. Spoiler Alert: Was he frustrated that Adam Arkin's Zobelle escaped the club's clutches? No, but it wasn't what he expected. " Kurt Sutter created a situation there...
