“The finacialization of the capitalist economy implies a growing abstraction of work from its useful function, and of language from its bodily dimension. Desire is diverted from physical contact and invested in the abstract field of simulated seduction, in the infinite space of the image.”
—Franco “Bifo” Berardi in The Uprising, On Poetry and Finance
For those who came of age in the nondescript 2000s, an era characterised by securitarian paranoia and lack of future prospects, Joe Swanberg’s Lol (2006) might as well read as their very own (purposeless) existential manifesto. A generational pamphlet that, in tune with its times, neither affirms nor negates, let alone criticizes, its predicament, but simply registers the vacuum within which it occurs. It is the Western vacuum of the 21st century whose first decade was marked by a tangible curb in the forward surge of pop cultural history. Cinema, but also music and literature,...

Time for a good old fashioned dosage of alien-fueled evil in the form of some stills, a trailer, and a truly killer one-sheet from The Dude Designs in anticipation of the upcoming indie flick Almost Human. Dig it!
Channel 83 Films is proud to announce the debut of the trailer for the indie horror film Almost Human with a new poster designed by The Dude Designs (aka Tom Hodge).
Cult poster artist The Dude Designs is known for his incredible designs for such posters as Hobo with a Shotgun and The Innkeepers along with the recent DVD artwork for They Live. My first introduction to Mark Fisher Fitness was this photo. A friend and colleague had just completed a several month stretch of fitness training with the muscle toning guru and posted this shot on Facebook. It is the photo I at least have always wanted my regular, normal-looking self transformed into a perfectly healthy, perfectly sculpted version of model proportions, only this wasn't Photoshopped.

"Peter Kosminsky has earned that rare accolade for a director of television drama: a retrospective at the BFI." In the Telegraph, Jasper Rees notes that Kosminsky is "a pretty much unique figure in contemporary television who has devoted his career to giving the powerful sleepless nights. Seven Below? Sounds like Snow White is missing, but at least we do have space involved in the whole thing. Not funny? Yeah, I thought so.
After all, this has nothing to do with evil queen, dwarfs, and huntsman, because this is the title of EFish Entertainment’s upcoming indie thriller that will have some great cast on board.
Just in case you think I’m hallucinating, check out the rest of this report for more interesting details.
So, here’s the thing. According to the latest reports, Val Kilmer, Ving Rhames, Luke Goss and Rebecca Da Costa are all attached to star in Kevin Carraway‘s movie that will follow “…a group of strangers brought together when a terrible storm leaves them stranded in a house in the woods where a terrible event transpired exactly 100 years prior.
The group seems trapped in a ghostly time warp, and history is repeating itself.

The indie thriller Seven Below has managed to build up a nice slate of actors for itself, with Variety reporting that the main cast is now comprised of Val Kilmer, Ving Rhames, Luke Goss, and Rebecca Da Costa. Directed by Kevin Carraway and written by him and Lawrence Smith, the story follows “a group of strangers trapped in a time warp house where a terrible event transpired exactly 100 years prior.”
Kilmer has been attached to the film for several months, and shooting was even set to begin in New Mexico, before a change in state tax credits made the shooting location change to Cincinnati, Ohio. How the aesthetics of New Mexico get replaced by Cincinnati is something I don’t really understand, but filming will commence next month. EFish’s Eric Mark Fisher and Brianna Lee Johnson will be producing, along with Warren Ostergard.

"There is a useful but not very respected mode of criticism — let's call it 'micro-criticism' — that is made possible by the Internet," writes Girish Shambu in an entry inspired, at least in part, by the ongoing Project: New Cinephilia. "[W]hen it is practiced well, it can be valuable, insightful, and forward-looking, while working in small, daily, and humble ways."
His focus, of course, is on Facebook and Twitter and the subtle yet vital differences between the kinds of critical discourse each enables, and he eventually works his way into a quote from Raymond Durgnat: "The business of criticism seems to me 'matters arising,' and naturally varies from film to film. I'd rather be wrong but open up a perspective than be right, i.e., dismiss opportunities for the full, intellectual, sensual, emotional experience of reflective hesitation." The emphasis is Girish's, and he adds, "I think there's a lesson here for Internet micro-criticism.

Filmmakers known for feelgood movies including Slumdog Millionaire and Billy Elliot put in charge of 2012 events
Both are known for uplifting feelgood movies where the virtuous child gets what they deserve despite all the obstacles – whether it's a chai wallah from the slums or a miner's son who just wants to dance. So there was little surprise, but much cheer, when Danny Boyle and Stephen Daldry were today put in charge of London's 2012 Olympic opening ceremony.
Daldry, who directed Billy Elliot, will take overall creative charge of opening and closing ceremonies for both the Olympics and Paralympics while Boyle will be artistic director of the main Olympic opener.
Boyle, an Oscar-winner for Slumdog Millionaire, called it "a fantastic responsibility." He said: "When they offered me the job they said do you want to think about it overnight and I said 'No, I want to do it and I'll make tea if you want me to.

A symposium staged by a home entertainment trade group Tuesday framed the many possibilities of digital distribution and its still-nascent status in Hollywood.
To wit: More than a decade after computer-desktop players started streaming video, Web surfers still regularly need to download new software to access content on disparate sites. And forget about that much vaunted computer-to-living room connection happening for the masses anytime soon.
Hurdles ranging from tech complexity to a blizzard of data standards in need of sorting remain to be overcome before digital delivery will be ready for literal or figurative primetime. That was the collective message from panelists at the Entertainment Merchants Assn.'s Digital Media Pipeline.
"The ubiquity of turning on a device and making it work -- that's what we're after," Ema executive vp Mark Fisher told a Skirball Center audience of 100 including digirati and digiphobes alike.
