I’ve tried writing this like 15 different times over the last few weeks and this is the first time I’ve actually finished the opening sentence, so I guess I’m doing this. I just want it to be perfect, I want to say all the right things, and I’m still trying to figure out how to do this without having to pause because I can’t see through the tears. I don’t know if I’ll accomplish any of that, but here I go…

As the sun bled out its final rays of warmth on New Orleans on March 30th, we gathered in bloodthirsty droves around the Prytania Uptown Theatre, eager to sink our teeth into the latest cinematic incarnation of Count Dracula with the world premiere of Renfield, featuring the Count himself, Nicolas Cage, in attendance. Standing in line wearing my The Lost Boys T-shirt and carrying a pair of vampire teeth in my pocket (I planned on inserting them over my incisors later that night at the Vampire Ball), I couldn’t believe that another Overlook Film Festival was upon us. I was still reeling from my first experiences with Overlook back in 2022, and about 10 months later, it was already time to return for another round of what I’ve come to know as “summer camp for horror fans.”
This year, the lineup was bigger than ever, and looking up and down...

Originally selected as one of the winners of this year's Platform Comics' 10K Challenge, Jonathan James and Oliver Levang are giving away their Hell Racer short comic to Daily Dead readers as a Halloween treat!
For this challenge, teams had the following guidelines from Platform Comics:
Teams have 10,000 Minutes (7 days) to create a comic. Comics must be between 4 and 8 Pages. We will assign each team a Unique Theme. All teams will receive the same Line of Dialogue that must be used in their comic.
The line of dialogue for all participating teams was "Let it Burn," and Jonathan and Oliver were given the unique theme of "Underground Drag Racing Club."
Having conceived the entire idea for Hell Racer together over the course of 24 hours, they came up with something that is reminiscent of EC Comics and The Twilight Zone while still feeling like its own thing, with nods to The Car,...

Found lurking on library shelves and hiding in musty basements, books open doorways to new worlds we never knew existed, enriching our imaginations while paralyzing our bodies in fear. While stories told on screen can haunt our dreams for decades, what's printed on paper often squirms under our skin to dig into the dark corners of our psyches with the appetite of a living dead bookworm. From R.L. Stine's frightening tales for young readers to the haunting works of Stephen King and Shirley Jackson, the Corpse Club looks back on some of their favorite horror books and authors in a new episode of Daily Dead's podcast.

His artwork opened doorways to corners of our imaginations we didn't even know existed, making the H.R. Giger Museum in Switzerland a must-see experience for fans of the Alien franchise and the artist behind so many of the film's iconic imagery (just ask our Editor-in-Chief Jonathan James, who wrote about his time there in our Deadly Destinations column). One of the pieces on display in that museum is an Alien statue that once dazzled onlookers in Japan, and now the fine folks at CoolProps, in collaboration with the H.R. Giger Museum, have reproduced that statue as a detailed Alien maquette that will be released by Sideshow Collectibles in 2018:
From Sideshow Collectibles: "At the H.R. Giger exhibition held in Japan known as “H.R. Giger Exhibition In Japan 87”, the Alien statue on display was made from the screen-used suit for the movie “Alien”. Many fans were fascinated with its beauty still...

Back in 1982, George A. Romero and Stephen King introduced viewers to a different kind of cake, a deadly creature in a crate, and mysterious "meteor shit" that wouldn't come off no matter how hard you scrubbed. Nearly 35 years after its initial release, Creepshow is still widely regarded as one of the best (if not the best) horror anthologies, giving the Corpse Club plenty of cinematic moments to celebrate on their new episode, which also includes a look back at other beloved anthology films.
"Where's my cake?" In episode 25 of Corpse Club, co-hosts Patrick Bromley, Heather Wixson, Scott Drebit, Derek Anderson, and Jonathan James celebrate 35 years of George A. A modern master of horror, Stephen King's books and short stories have thrilled and chilled "Constant Readers" for generations, and so too have the many adaptations of his work. Following up the first film in a franchise can be a tough task, but oftentimes sequels can expand upon and even improve the elements that make their predecessors great. Sequels are especially prevalent in the genre that Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and more killer icons call home, and in a new episode of Corpse Club, the Daily Dead team discusses some of the most memorable first sequels (the second films in franchises) from the horror genre.
In episode 16 of Corpse Club, co-hosts Heather Wixson, Patrick Bromley, Scott Drebit, Derek Anderson, and Jonathan James gather around their microphones to discuss memorable first sequels from a wide variety of horror franchises, including Halloween, Friday the 13th, Wrong Turn, Child's Play, The Howling, Alien, and many more.

He forever changed the landscape of horror when he introduced viewers to the cannibalistic Sawyer family in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, but Tobe Hooper's filmmaking career took him far beyond that frightening farmhouse to show viewers that horrors could also be found in space, in sideshow attractions, and even within the suburbs. Like many cinema lovers, the Daily Dead team was deeply saddened by the news of Hooper's passing at the age of 74, and to pay tribute to the fearless filmmaker, we reflect on his eclectic career on the latest episode of our podcast.

Our own Editor-in-Chief Jonathan James was recently invited to QuakeCon in Dallas, where he had the chance to play The Evil Within 2 demo featuring the "gruesome, giggling guardian," and if you weren't able to make it to the PC gamer gathering, Bethesda Softworks has released the "Guardian" gameplay footage online for all to enjoy.
"Are you ready to face off against Guardian and the many other horrors waiting for you in The Evil Within 2? This chase is just a snippet of what players have experienced in the hands-on demo.
A breathless chase down a hallway. Echoing laughter and the whirring of a sawblade dogging your steps. If you’re brave enough to look behind you, you’ll see the maelstrom of body parts that make up the monstrous creature known as Guardian. Aside from a handful of brief glimpses in trailers, the recent hands-on demo for The Evil Within 2 was...

Anderson's approach to horror in his pre-Resident Evil days, the movie's ambitious storytelling, and the engaging performances from the cast. So sit back, close your eyes (but don't pull them out of their sockets), and enjoy a trip to deep space... and beyond.
