Chennai, Feb 10 (Ians) Joe Root's men came out with a "perfect performance" against India in the first Test, which they won by 227 runs at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium, says former England captain Nasser Hussain.
Hussain, however, believes that England should expect India to "come back at them" in the remaining matches of the four-Test series, the second of which begins from Saturday at the same venue.
"People were writing England off, saying this series could be 4-0 to India. No one really gave this side much of a chance. India had been on top of their game. Had won in Australia, Virat Kohli was back and India is a very difficult place to go and win in Test match cricket," wrote Hussain in his latest column for Sky Sports.
"So, this win for England has to be right up there, especially away from home. They put in the perfect performance.

Chennai, Feb 6 (Ians) England's past successes over India in India have come with the aid of sweep shots and they used the same stroke to grind the Indian slow bowlers on a flat, batting-friendly Ma Chidambaram wicket here on Saturday.
Skipper Joe Root got to his fifth double century, becoming the first player to get to the figure in his 100th Test. On Friday, he had waited for 50 balls before employing the sweep which he had used quite successfully during the tour of Sri Lanka. But once in and settled, he used it to great effect trying to spoil the line and length of India bowlers.
Ben Stokes joined in and swept quite a few balls to the boundary as the Indian bowlers struggled.
Former India wicket-keeper Kiran More tweeted on Saturday, "Saw #GrahamGooch sweeping @RaviShastriOfc and #ManinderSingh during the 1987 @cricketworldcup semi-final. Then @KP24 used reverse sweep quite effectively in...

Before the start of the first Test where England opted to bat, Root had scored 8,249 runs in 99 Test matches, including 19 hundred and 49 half-centuries. He is the fourth-highest Test scorer for England, only behind Alastair Cook, Graham Gooch and Alec Stewart.
Incidentally, Root became only the third cricketer to play both his first and 100th Test match in the same visiting country. Root had made his debut in India in 2012 in a series which England won 2-1.
Karl Hooper and Kapil Dev are the other two cricketers to make their Test debut and 100th Test in the same visiting country. While Kapil made his debut and played his 100th Test both in Pakistan,...

Galle, Jan 23 (Ians) England captain Joe Root went past former opener Geoffrey Boycott on the list of top run-getters for England here on Saturday. Wellington, Nov 9 (Ians) New Zealand Test opener Tom Blundell has added his name in the list of batsmen who have been dismissed in an unusual manner after he got out for obstructing the field during the Plunket Shield match between Wellington and Otago at the Basin Reserve.
The incident happened on the final day of the fixture on Sunday when Blundell, batting on 101, edged a ball from Otago fast bowler Jacob Duffy back toward his stumps and first used his foot to try to stop the ball - which is legal as per the McC rules. The 30-year-old, not having deflected the ball, however then tapped with his glove, which is against the rules and was adjudged out by the umpires.
The right-hand batsman would have been out handled the ball but a change in the laws of cricket in 2017 brought that mode of dismissal under obstructing the field.

How I managed to come out alive after facing the feared West Indies fast bowlers in their heyday
Last winter, by chance, I found myself travelling to Australia with Viv Richards, who was on his way to do some "King and I"-type gigs with Rodney Hogg, the former Australian fast bowler. We've known each other a long time, Viv and I, but I'd never got round to asking him one particular question. So I did.
"If you had to choose four fast bowlers of your time with West Indies, which would they be?" He replied: "Well, I would have Malcolm. And I would have Andy. And I would have Mikey." He pondered a little longer. "And I would have Curtly." So there you have it, Viv Richards' dream attack: Malcolm Marshall, the slithering genius; Andy Roberts, cerebral, calculating, the Godfather of the modern West Indian pacemen; Michael Holding,...

Semi-retired Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds, it seems, is truly embracing India. He has essayed a role in a Bollywood film - "Patiala House" - which features noted actor Akshay Kumar and actress Anushka Sharma - and is more or less likened to Gurinder Chadha's "Bend it Like Beckham". Symonds is in demand in India, where the Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians bought his services for 850,000 dollars. According to the Sydney Morning Herald, "Patiala House", released on Friday, features appearances by Symonds and fellow former stars ex-Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram, ex-England captains Nasser Hussain and Graham Gooch, and South African batsman Herschelle Gibbs The film tracks tensions between a traditional Punjabi father and his son in the west London suburb of Southall. The film is about a cricketer's life and therefore we have taken many cricketers as actors so that we can get a real look for the film,...

Akshay Kumar seems to be leaving no stone unturned to make his upcoming movie Patiala House as eyeball- grabbing as possible. So apart from the huge starcast which the film already boasts of, the audience will also get to see some unlikely non-Bollywood celebrities!
Akshay, who plays a cricketer in this Nikhil Advani venture, will be seen playing cricket opposite former and current faces like Nasir Hussain, Brendon McCullum, Herschelle Gibbs, Kieron Pollard, Andrews Symonds, Kamran Akmal, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Graham Gooch, Wasim Akram, Matthew Hayden among others. Advani, who wanted to make this movie look pretty authentic, suggested the inclusion of actual cricketers which was agreed upon by producer Bhushan Kumar. Bhushan says, "In the film, Akshay is playing for England and it is the World Cup that they are playing for. So it needed to have a lot of known faces to be seen with Akshay. Then we approached these players,...
