Not so long ago, the only Australian TV shows imported by the UK and US were soaps and the odd kids’ series. Neighbours, Home & Away, Prisoner: Cell Block H, Heartbreak High, and child trauma factory Round the Twist went overseas, but not much else.
It didn’t make for a very complete picture. 30 years ago, if you’d asked a British person to conjure up Australia based solely on its available TV output, they’d have pictured a land of bait shops, haunted lighthouses, prison wings, and cul de sacs where good neighbours become good friends. Ask one now, and thanks to streaming, it’d be a much broader church, based on viewing comedies, thrillers, dramas, detective shows and more.

A story with heart and a smartphone can be all that’s needed to make a feature in 2021, according to James Demitri.
The photographer-turned-writer/director used an iPhone 11 to shoot Misplaced earlier this year, and has since been successful in entering the black-and-white film into a host of festivals, both domestically and internationally.
So far, it has been selected to screen at events in Budapest, Barcelona, Rome, Kosice, and Montreal, and was also crowned Best Feature Film at the Paris Cinema Awards and the Masters of Cinema Awards in Moscow.
Filmed predominantly in Sydney’s inner west, the story follows a man who loses his ability to speak after the death of his mother, having been consumed by grief.

When Foxtel first began to craft with Fremantle Wentworth back in 2011, the hope was it would sit comfortably alongside the service’s premium HBO and BBC dramas.
While based on Reg Watson’s long-running ’80s drama Prisoner, and suitably honouring its legacy, it was not designed to a be remake. The desire was to see a modern reimagining of the characters; one that was ambitious and bold.
“We wanted to make something great for Foxtel and set the bar high. It was all part of our hopes for what we could do in the future,” executive producer and former Foxtel head of drama Penny Win recalls to If.
Originally created by Lara Radulovich and David Hannam, Fremantle Australia CEO Ian Hogg pitched Foxtel director of television Brian Walsh the series over a meal in Cannes.

Six-part anthology series Fires, about the experiences of everyday people at the frontline of the 2019-2020 bushfires, will premiere on Sunday, 26 September, 8.40pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.
Filmed in Melbourne and regional Victoria earlier this year, the Tony Ayres Productions drama goes behind the images and the headlines to touch on the stories of people directly affected by the fires.
The series begins in Queensland in September 2019, at the start of the fire season, and continues as the fires make their deadly march south, burning out of control through Nsw and Victoria until February 2020. Each episode is set in a different location as the fires spread and build to a terrifying onslaught across the country through Christmas and New Year.
As the fires grow in intensity and ferocity and threaten different communities, new characters appear, whose stories reflect the breadth of experience during Australia’s black summer.

Marta Dusseldorp in ‘Wentworth’ (Photo credit: Sarah Enticknap).
In a world away from A Place to Call Home, Marta Dusseldorp has donned the prison track suit with a guest role in Foxtel’s Wentworth, which resumes shooting this week.
Her character Sheila Bausch, a senior figure in the True Path cult, is on remand, charged with the murder of nine people at the cult’s retreat.
Described as highly intelligent, charismatic and manipulative, Sheila worked as the personal secretary for True Path’s founder Dr Mendel (Brian Vriends).
The Fremantle production re-starts after shutting down on March 23, just before a planned hiatus. The show has the advantage of being shot in its own large building in Melbourne, which has the flexibility of moving scenes set in a small cell to a bigger cell.

Rarriwuy Hick in Wentworth (Photo credit: Xinger Xanger).
In her seven year screen career Wentworth star Rarriwuy Hick has been nominated for several awards and has won one: but what a prize.
The Arnhem Land-raised Hick was named female actor of the year at the 2019 National Dreamtime Awards last month; Rob Collins was declared male actor of the year.
Nova Peris received the lifetime achievement award and Ashleigh Barty had the dual accolades of person of the year and female sportsperson.
The other nominees for female actor were Miranda Tapsell, Ursula Yovich and Madeleine Madden. “Just to be nominated with those girls was awesome,” Rarriwuy tells If. “It was totally unexpected; I am not used to winning.”
Founded three years ago, the awards celebrate the success and achievements of Australia’s First Nations people. Nominations were submitted by the public and the winners chosen by an expert panel.

Kate Box and Zoe Terakes on the ‘Wentworth’ set.
The time when cis-gender people could play transgender characters on screen is fast disappearing, according to Zoe Terakes.
“I’ve never seen a cis-gender person tell a transgender story 100 per cent believably,” the young actor, who identifies as non-binary, tells If.
“There is a level of authenticity in representation that comes when you have somebody who gets it, feels it in their bones and they have lived it.”
Terakes has joined the cast of season eight and nine of Fremantle/Foxtel’s Wentworth playing Rebel ‘Reb’ Keane, who is terrified after being sentenced to prison.
Reb was born female, came to feel she was trapped in a man’s body and now identifies as a female-to-trans man.
Reb’s parents send Reb to a cult-like “rehabilitation” clinic in an effort to “cure” their “daughter,” which has echoes of Joel Edgerton’s feature Boy Erased.

Alexander Bertrand in ‘Les Norton.’
After landing his first lead role in Roadshow Rough Diamond’s Australian Gangster, Alexander Bertrand set his sights on playing the title character in the same production house’s Les Norton.
That was no sure thing: Despite his performance as the Sydney crime figure in the upcoming Seven Network drama, the actor had to fight hard to win the Norton role in the ABC series based on Robert G. Barrett’s Australian novels set in the 1980s.
“There were five or six people up for the role, including a couple of heavyweight Hollywood names,” he tells If. “I had to do a couple of call backs.”
Jocelyn Moorhouse, who co-directed the 10-part series with Fadia Abboud, David Caesar and Morgan O’Neill, loved Australian Gangster and championed his cause.
“Jocelyn told me she put on the brass knuckles and went into bat for me,” he says.

‘Back of the Net’
Facing zero competition from the new releases, New Line/DC Entertainment’s family superhero adventure Shazam! continued its reign at Australian cinemas last weekend.
Lionsgate’s Hellboy reboot, Universal’s comedy Little, Fox’s romantic drama The Aftermath and Laika Studios/Roadshow’s stop-motion animated comedy Missing Link all struggled, generally mirroring their Us results.
Meanwhile Umbrella’s Back of the Net, a young adult drama directed by Louise Alston and scripted by Casie Tabanou and Alison Spuck, launched in Queensland and Victoria, netting $14,000 from limited sessions on 38 screens.
Don’t read too much into that because the film starring Sofia Wylie (the Disney Channel’s Andi Mack) as a soccer academy student who locks horns with the school’s star player Evie (Tiarnie Coupland) is rolling out over the next few weeks, dated for the school holidays.

As the 16th annual Westival gets underway, festival goers old and new descend on Gladstone Heritage Village in Western Australia and immediately settle into their rival camps: Aboriginal and Morris dancers, punk rockers and ukulele players, winos and musos. Among them are pretentious theremin technician Roland (Robert Sheehan), an Irish dog-washer making his Westival debut in the small workshop hut, and folksy fiddler Keevey (Rebecca Breeds), a seasoned pro who tours with family outfit The Warrickins. Following an ampli-frying duet in which Roland recognises latent talent in Keevey, their mutual attraction threatens to give way to unrequited admiration when he inadvertently criticises her folk rock roots.
Ben Elton’s first film since Maybe Baby in 2000, after which he moved to Freemantle, Western Australia and gained Australian citizenship, Three Summers draws from his experiences of nearby Fairbridge folk festival and presumably his marriage to a bass player to tell the story of a fictional festival.

Lust, Actually: Lawson’s Sexually Charged Debut Struggles with What Women Want
Taking home the audience prize at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival, Australian director Josh Lawson makes some decidedly risqué choices with his debut, The Little Death, which is basically an omnibus of alternative sexual practices rarely explored in the cinematic arena of the heterosexual. Mostly motivated by the complicated and sometimes controversial secret desires of women, the film, taking its name from the French idiom for orgasm, is sometimes refreshingly blunt as it navigates through several scenarios. However, it is just as often silly and unsubstantial, with an undefined purpose setting in as we close with an unseemly end to the common thread.
Maeve (Bojana Novakovic) and her boyfriend Paul (Lawson) set us off on in the circle. She’s getting her feet sucked, but confides after their bout of lovemaking her real fantasy involves being raped. Except she...

Australian film has seen as resurgence in the 21st century. Not since the heyday of the 1970s has the antipodean cinema scene enjoyed such a swell in international popularity. For a very long time, the only films to come out of Australia were comedies. These films were representative of Australian cinema to the world at large and determined what kind of movie was considered commercially viable in its home country. This resulted in a rush of Australian comedy films that stuck fast to the rule of diminishing returns. Thank God then that we have had such a great run of Australian films lately and more particularly, the absolutely terrific sex comedy, The Little Death.
A portmanteau film that’s a little reminiscent of Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia and the work of Woody Allen, The Little Death is absolutely concerned with sex.

The Overnight
Director/Screenwriter: Patrick Brice
Two families meet at the park and set up a playdate that has unexpected outcomes for all. Cast: Adam Scott, Jason Schwartzman, Taylor Schilling, Judith Godrèche. (film synopsis from sxsw.com)
Overall
It’s hilarious. The boundaries of bromance, marriage, friendship and even penis comedy are pushed to a very funny limit with this film. It’s great to see Schilling doing great work outside of “Orange is the New Black.”
Final Score: 8/10
