This is the way Skins ends. Not with a bang but with a whimper. Last week’s taut urban drama has basically been replaced by Skins Does Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 1. That’s what it feels like in a nutshell. Half of it is Cook, Emma, and Charlie on the run in the woods in a really slowly paced runaround with the episode’s villain that abruptly jumps to a climax. Which, as well as being flawed in itself, is a really disappointing way to pull off the programme’s last ever episode.
Unfortunately, the idea of exploring Cook’s personality post-Series 4 (which was a prominent theme in Part 1 and should be the focus of the whole story) is largely ignored in this episode. The only moments where it gets a look in is where he discusses...

There was a heck of a lot riding on this final episode of Skins - it not only had to fulfil part one's promise and give Jack O'Connell's fantastic Cook the send-off he deserves, but also round off a series that redefined 'youth' television. No mean feat, especially given the standalone nature of these final films.
As we delve back into Cook's moody mindscape, the bad lad is on the run with the two women in his life - temptress Charlie (Hannah Britland) and girlfriend Emma (Esther Smith). The Cook we revisited last week was already a far cry from the braggart of series past, but on the run and out of his comfort zone, he's altogether different again - a forlorn, somewhat pathetic figure. Even the residents of a docile country pub sling insults his way.

Jamie Brittain does it again. After the last time he wrote an episode featuring Cook (Series 4 Episode 7), there was some doubt in my mind about how well he’d pick up on the character and his story but here he has excelled himself with an episode that’s well-paced and exciting but also manages to have a lot of depth, along with a shockingly dark climax.
But as with basically everything, this episode’s not completely perfect. The first ten minutes are a little slow and the first of the episode’s two sex scenes feels a bit gratuitous and played for laughs, which feels somewhat at odds with the darker tone that builds up later on but those issues aren’t enough to negatively affect the whole episode.

So Effy's in jail, Naomi's dead, Emily's heartbroken and Cassie's shunned a hard-partying showbiz lifestyle for a quieter existence...
It's been over three years since we last saw Cook - launching himself, a flurry of fists, at his best friend's killer - but given how this final series of Skins has been panning out, should we expect to find Jack O'Connell's teen tearaway now drained of his youthful vigour and punk-ish exuberance? Well… sort of.
With its sweeping shots of a buzzing Manchester and a moody voiceover, Rise is as far from traditional Skins as these final films have dared to stray. This first film boasts a dark atmosphere and pulsing electronic soundtrack - stylistically, early comparisons to Ryan Gosling flick Drive are not entirely unwarranted.

Director: Michael Winterbottom; Screenwriter: Matt Greenhalgh; Starring: Steve Coogan, Imogen Poots, Anna Friel, Tamsin Egerton; Running time: 101 mins; Certificate: 18
24 Hour Party People's Michael Winterbottom and Steve Coogan head from Tony Wilson to Paul Raymond with their latest movie The Look of Love, a biopic of the porn impresario who transformed London's Soho district and eventually became one of the richest men in Britain.
Raymond's story is one of highs, lows, hedonism and personal tragedy. It's a classic tale we've seen done often before, and Look of Love certainly shares DNA with Winterbottom and Coogan's previous collaboration on Party People.
Rises and falls were also memorably depicted in Martin Scorsese films Goodfellas and Casino, but here Coogan's protagonist skirts nearer to the boundaries of what's legal and what's not. He opens the Raymond Revuebar strip club, a private members' venue, to navigate around strict laws on flashing flesh. Lord Chamberlain's theatre...

★★☆☆☆ British filmmaker Robert Heath returns to screens with Truth or Dare (2012), a low-budget horror that attempts to put a generic spin on the well-known party game of the same name. The film follows five university friends - Paul (Liam Boyle), Chris (Jack Gordon), Luke (Alexander Vlahos), Eleanor (Jennie Jacques) and Gemma (Florence Hall) - as they celebrate the end of term with a drug-fuelled party. Their antics, however, come at the expense and total humiliation of fellow student Felix (Tom Kane), who's always been somewhat of an outsider.

The premise of Truth or Dare almost seems like a bad joke, the kind of idea for a movie that only shows up in fiction when mocking lame-brained movie plots. There have been a thousand jokes about innocent games, objects, or animals twisted to sinister ends, but this movie actually goes ahead and makes that its main idea. This is, indeed, about a murderous game of truth or dare. And it is supposed to be taken seriously!
Let.s back up and explain a bit. Truth or Dare follows a group of college-age British kids as they go to a party being held at a remote mansion. The party is in celebration of the birthday of Felix (Tom Kane), an outcast whom some of them had humiliated at a different party several months earlier. One would think this should be a giant red flag, but they answer...

I find with British horror, especially films with smaller budgets there is a tendency to stick to the mainstream idea of what is popular. Set up an injustice at in the first few minutes of the film then have a character come back for revenge. Its cliché, it’s over used and to be quite honest it’s boring. The ironic thing is though there is always a hidden gem that manages to shine through, down to some clever writing and actor choices. This is what you get with Truth or Dare.

*here be minor spoilers. Director: Robert Heath. Writer: Matthew McGuchan. Cast: Liam Boyle, Jack Gordon, Florence Hall, Nicky Henson, Jennie Jacques, Tom Kane, Jason Maza, and David Oakes. Truth or Dare is a revenge thriller created by director Robert Heath. Heath recently completed another dramatic thriller titled Sus in 2010. Heath has cast a wide range of actors for his latest. Arguably, Jennie Jacques (Shank) and television actor David Oakes have the most acting experience. Eleanour (Jacques) and Justin (Oakes) are also coincidentally the two main villains in this picture with Felix (Tom Kane) acting as a quiet and shy protagonist. Truth or Dare transitions from a revenge thriller into a gory horror picture thanks to a few twists along the way. And, this film is an enjoyable watch despite a few awkward scenes. The film's story is set up much like a trap in the first act. Justin invites several...

In reality, the party game Truth or Dare often results in teenage girls and boys wincing as they must all kiss one another for five seconds on the lips, before jokingly spitting out the germs soon after. Such a pattern is generally repeated until someone in the group either passes out, or goes in with tongues. However in Robert Heath’s psychological horror Truth or Dare, the game is taken to another level, as the harmless party event soon becomes a matter of life or death.
We follow a close group of friends at University, who spend much of their time going out partying, getting drunk and enjoying themselves. However on the outskirts of the group is the dejected loner Felix (Tom Kane), who is beaten up at a house party by Chris (Jack Gordon) having made an advance on his girlfriend Gemma (Florence Hall) during a game of truth or dare.

There was a time when rock movies had a certain vivacity that went with the music – That'll Be the Day and Stardust, the 1970s diptych of David Puttnam productions starring David Essex for example. Nowadays they tend to be gloomy affairs such as Anton Corbijn's biography of Ian Curtis, that take their doom-laden heroes at their own valuation. Powder is the fictionalised story of two Merseyside bands. The Grams are a group of unimpeachable integrity led by the lugubrious Keva (Liam Boyle), whose abusive childhood guarantees the authenticity of his music. The Transbad Saints, on the other hand, are a slick crowd of phoneys led by the posturing, epicene Helmet (Al Weaver), who steal a No 1 hit from Keva and head for the States. There's a dull excursion to Ibiza where a suicide and much drug-taking ensue, and a climactic sequence shot on location at the V festival in Suffolk.

The Skin I Live In (15)
(Pedro Almodóvar, 2011, Spa) Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya, Jan Cornet, Marisa Paredes. 120 mins.
Almodóvar's silky skills and supreme confidence tempt respectable audiences into an elegantly twisted tale of surgical obsession that few others could pull off. It's best not to spell things out too much about this; suffice to say Banderas's project to create a new form of skin, with Anaya his captive guinea pig, doesn't go where you'd expect.
As usual, there's a lot going on beneath the surface.
One Day (12A)
(Lone Scherfig, 2011, Us) Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Rafe Spall. 108 mins.
Fans might not have had Hathaway's migratory trans-Pennine accent in mind when they fell in love with David Nicholls's calendar-crossing odd-couple romance on paper, and the equally wayward period details detract even further. A pity, given the promising material, but Grazia readers will lap it up just the same.

This adaptation of Kevin Sampson's 90s-novel about the Britpop era could have been great, but it's let down by shoddy dialogue and leaden pacing
Kevin Sampson has adapted his own 1999 novel about a fictional Britpop-era band and the result is a mess. A drama that could have been either powerful and moving like Anton Corbijn's Control, or conceivably funny and punchy like Nick Hamm's Killing Bono is just a drag; it's cliched and leaden, and moves with all the speed and manoeuvrability of a submarine in treacle. Moreover, some of the dialogue is frankly bizarre. Liam Boyle plays Keva, a talented singer in a cult band called the Grams, whose unrecorded song about his late father is ripped off by a creepy hanger-on called Helmet (Al Weaver) and turned into a crass stadium anthem for Helmet's ridiculous rockers, who become unjustifiably famous while the Grams languish in obscurity.

From the makers of Awaydays comes Powder, a new rock ‘n’ roll film that will be released in cinemas to celebrate the close of the festival season. The story of Liverpool four piece The Grams, Powder captures all the energy and excitement of a band breaking through, complete with all the trappings of sex, drugs and band rivalries. Filmed on location at V Festival and Ibiza and adapted from the best-selling novel by Kevin Sampson, the former manager of The Farm, Powder has all the ingredients to commit the machinations of the music industry to screen.
Alongside the cast of young British acting talent including Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones) and Liam Boyle (Awaydays) and The Rascals’ members Greg Mighall and Joe Edwards. Together they make up The Grams, a fictional band that is given an authentic identity thanks to an original soundtrack of new songs written and performed by Starsailor’s James Walsh.

Why is it so hard to capture the energy of rock'n'roll on film? That's what Powder writer Kevin Sampson asked himself as he watched the Grams take to the stage
A crowd of some 50,000 edged forward with mild irritation as the Grams took to the stage. The lad next to me nudged his pal, their faces set in that certain way that has become ritual at music festivals over the years.
"Here come the whipping boys," said those faces. "Get the bottles of wee-wee ready."
It was quite some journey that had taken the Grams to this top-end-of-the-bill slot at the V Festival. Paolo Nutini had just finished, the Enemy were on next, with Oasis due to play what turned out to be their last-ever show later that night. So what were a band that doesn't actually exist doing up there on stage?
