Have you had your digital soma today? Sue Gardner, executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation, observed in a recent interview on the Australian radio show "Future Tense" that Wikipedia participants who transition to tablet devices seem to contribute less as a result, because those devices “are better for watching videos and surfing the internet than for typing text.” Her real point was that this is not just a problem for Wikipedia, it’s also a potentially profound shift in how to think about what the Internet is for. Instead of being a place where all sorts of people create all sorts of things for all sorts of audiences, Gardner continued, “I think increasingly what's happening is, partly as a result of the kinds of devices that are being manufactured and that people are buying, people are moving toward a more consumption-based Internet experience from a production-based experience.” (I’m quoting Rob Walker at Yahoo!

Rob Zombie’s Facebook page has become the go-to place for anyone wanting news about the director’s upcoming The Lords Of Salem.
Today is no different. With filming very much underway, Zombie took the time out of his busy schedule to let us know that Judy Geeson (Gilmore Girls) has joined the cast. Here’s what Mr. Zombie had to say:
As we head into Day 9 of filming I thought I would let you in on another great bit of casting news. Judy Geeson has signed on for the role of Lacy Doyle, owner and landlady of Heidi Hawthorne’s apartment.
Although a fixture on british television since 1962 Judy exploded on the world scene with her starring turn as Pamela Dare opposite Sydney Poitier in the smash film To Sir, with Love. Other notable films include Doomwatch, Branigan, Goodbye Gemini, The Eagle Has Landed and Fear In The Night.

It's eccentric. It's unprofessional. And it makes money. How four people who do exactly what they want run one of the most popular blogs on the planet.
Back in 1999, Mark Frauenfelder wrote an article about new web tools that made it easier to do something called "blogging." His editors at the technology magazine The Industry Standard declined to publish it, concluding that blogging didn't really seem like a very big deal. Turns out it was.
It's certainly been a very good thing for Frauenfelder, who deployed the tools he learned about for his ill-fated article to start posting interesting links and offbeat observations on boingboing.net. In time, three friends who shared a similar appetite for curious information filtered through a nonmainstream worldview -- Cory Doctorow,...

It's "Hoarders: Pleistocene Edition" as BBC radio discovers what makes us human by examining 100 influential objects from the British Museum.
What makes us human? It's our stuff.
A truly incredible radio series from the BBC traces the history of human civilization through 100 objects from the British Museum. It kicked off last week with an Egyptian mummy from the third century BC (the series apparently isn't purely chronological--object number 2 was a 1.8-million-year-old carved stone chopping tool). The show runs through September, ending with modern marvels like the credit card, Soviet propaganda, and Hokusai's famous Wave. Object 100 is still a secret though--any guesses?
Maybe it's the recession (it's always the recession), but we seem to be going through a phase of self-analysis-through-stuff. There's "Hoarders", of course, and Rob Walker's great site Significant Objects, and a host of books like Taking Things Seriously. But this is the first study I've seen that...

Drac Studios is gearing up for a busy 2010. The FX shop behind Watchmen , The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Trailer Park of Terror has a number of projects hitting the screen, hopefully, this year including the creature bonanzas Night of the Demons and Dead of Night . Their upcoming slate doesn't stop there, however. Drac's Todd Tucker tells us there are a number of films they're in pre-production on. "There's a shark film, there's another one that's a cat person sort of film, then there's an alien movie. A lot of creature-heavy stuff." That shark film is Dead in the Water , directed by Rob Walker and written by Si Dunn. "Right now we're looking at only doing the FX," Tucker says. "They asked us to produce, but we haven't signed...

On the list of filmmakers who've made the transition from special effects to producing and directing live-action, you can now add the name Drac Studios. The FX and makeup company has won Oscars for a number of films, including Bram Stoker's Dracula (pictured above), and it will now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, create a live-action feature entirely in house, by opening up Drac Studios Louisiana and going into preproduction on Dead in the Water. Read more after the jump. "Si Dunn wrote the script," reports the trade journal, "which will be directed by Rob Walker and produced by Drac president Harvey Lowry." Lowry just completed production, with Todd...

Oscar-winning special effects and makeup house Drac Studios has opened up a production arm, Drac Studios Louisiana, and announced its first live-action feature, Dead in the Water. For the time being Drac is leasing space in Baton Rouge's Raleigh Studios Celtic Media Center.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Dead in the Water was written by Si Dunn and will be directed by Rob Walker with production being headed up by Drac president Harvey Lowry.
No plot details were made available, but taking into account Drac's track record of working on genre projects and the film's title, we figured it was safe to assume horror will be involved in one form or another. As for why they selected this location, Lowry said, "With all of the indie and studio films being shot in Louisiana, it was an easy decision to open a facility in the state. Now we can offer other...

Back in October, we chatted with Drac Studios Todd Tucker and Harvey Lowry at Spike TV's Scream Awards where they were just about wrapping production on Monster Mutt , a family fantasy film that Tucker directed. They were also just beginning production on The Mortician with Gareth Maxwell Roberts helming. Now, Drac Studios is opening up Drac Studios Louisiana and going into pre-production on their next feature Dead in the Water , which will be directed by Rob Walker from a script by Si Dunn. Harvey Lowry is producing. "With all of the indie and studio films being shot in Louisiana, it was an easy decision to open a facility in the state," Lowry said.
