Critics call him out of touch – yet, with his Avatar sequel, he could soon have three of the four highest-grossing films of all time. Fans and experts explain how he attracts such huge audiences
James Cameron may have been on to something when, after winning the best director Oscar for Titanic in 1998, he claimed exuberantly to be “king of the world”. He has occupied the top spot at the worldwide box office for nearly 25 years, thanks to 1997’s Titanic and 2009’s Avatar, which have grossed more than 5bn (£4.1bn) between them. His latest film, Avatar: The Way of Water, joined the all-time Top 10 after only three weeks and was the sixth-fastest film to make 1bn. It’s now at No 7, with Titanic at No 3 and the original Avatar at No 1. If it were to overtake Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Cameron would end up with three of the four highest-grossing films ever.

Céline Sciamma's "Portrait of a Lady on Fire," as described in /Film's review of the film, is an evocative story of love, lust, and longing. A profoundly cinematic story, the French language period drama tells the story of the budding romance between Héloïse, an aristocrat, and Marianne, the woman who will paint her portrait. "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" illustrates a visceral queer romance — Sciamma places queer women of the past at the center of her story and tells a tale through art and yearning.
Throughout cinema's history, female characters have been gazed at without consent. Sciamma's film subverts the male gaze. Héloïse and Marianne meet each other halfway; there's no power dynamic because there's equality between them ... and, as Sciamma suggests, "emancipation." As for the filmmaker's influences and inspiration while making the movie, Sciamma has named "Titanic" to be a powerful one.

Director James Cameron has revealed he wants to shoot a feature-length "dramatic film" in 3-d.
In an interview with Variety, the Titanic helmer disputed the misconception that 3-d technology can only be used for spectacle films such as Beowulf and U2 3D.
"I plan to shoot a small dramatic film in 3-d, just to prove this point," he said.
Cameron's next film Avatar, his first in over a decade, will be released later in the year and was filmed using the dual-strip 3-d Fusion Camera that he helped create.
He said: "In Avatar, there are a number of scenes that are straight dramatic scenes, no action, no effects. They play very well, and in fact seem . . .
