When police responded to a disturbance at an apartment in Anchorage, Alaska, they discovered a heartbreaking sight: A 6-year-old boy was wandering around the parking lot, alone.
“Ninjas came to my home and killed my family,” he told investigators.
The body of Christopher Brooks, 38, was found in a bloodstained snowbank nearby. He’d been shot multiple times in the head and body. His 32-year-old wife, Danielle Brooks, was found dead inside the home. Police say she was covered with so much blood that they couldn’t initially tell how she had died.
Upstairs neighbors told officers that they had heard the gunshots,...

The U.S. Men's Gymnastics Team had a disappointing afternoon competing in the all-around team final in the Rio Olympics on Monday. The five gymnasts - Sam Mikulak, Jake Dalton, Alex Naddour, Chris Brooks and Danell Leyva - never really got their rhythm as they competed, and ended up placing 5th in the competition. From the beginning, it was clear that Japan was the team to beat. (Their captain, "King" Kohei Uchimura, is the reigning Olympic all-around champion and thought of as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time.) They dominated the competition, easily winning the gold. The Russian...

Michael Phelps grabbed fans' attention at his fifth Olympics by earning his 19th gold medal - but he also caught their attention for the strange purple bruises on his body. The round bruises are the end product of a healing technique called cupping, and Phelps isn't the only athlete trying it. American gymnast Alex Naddour recently posted an Instagram picture of himself with a cupping mark clearly in view, gymnastics team captain Chris Brooks relies on the method and former Olympic swimmer Natalie Coughlin has sported the purple dots on her body. "That’s been the secret that I have...

Alex Naddour of the U.S. men's gymnastics team says his wife and newborn baby will not be joining him in Rio for the Olympics over Zika concerns. "It's just one less thing for me to worry about," Naddour, an Olympic veteran, told People regarding his daughter, Lilah. The Olympian, who was an alternate for Team USA at the 2012 London Games, says his "awesome" 6-month-old daughter with former University of Oklahoma gymnast Hollie Vise will have to be his good luck charm from afar. "She can watch me from the television screen," said Naddour, 25. Little Lilah might be far away during the competition,...

The U.S. men's gymnastics team views Rio as the chance to finally land at the top of the podium after their medal-less team performance at the 2012 London Games. Team USA - a favorite to win four years ago - finished in disappointing fifth place. But this time around will be different, they say. The men explain that they've been training "harder, longer, smarter" at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center together to achieve gold in Rio - and "nothing" can stop the tight-knit squad. "[We're bringing] a higher level of professionalism and confidence and that's our biggest improvement," Olympic veteran Sam Mikulak told People in March.

It’s 9:30 a.m. on the last day of a week-long training camp for the U.S.A. men's senior gymnastics team, and several Rio-bound athletes are sitting in a circle and launching into seemingly impossible stretches. "Right leg!" Olympic veteran Sam Mikulak shouts at the athletes gathered around him. In automatic response, they easily grab their perfectly flexed toes. "Now left!" It's all sweaty business at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center - where the best male gymnasts from across the country come to train. And with the Rio Games fast approaching, there's no joking around for the tight-knit,...

Olympic gymnast John Orozco is going to Rio. "I just can't believe it," he told NBC after earning his spot on the 2016 U.S. men's gymnastics team. "I can't put it into words. ...The past year and a half that I've had and all the people that doubted me, I finally found the strength within myself to just go out there and do it." The former 2012 Olympian re-tore his Achilles heel in June of last year and lost his beloved mother leading up to the Olympic Trials on Saturday in St. Louis, Missouri. And while he struggled to secure his standing during the trials,...

I am a huge fan of Brockmeier. I read his novel A Brief History of the Dead a few years ago, and have been hooked ever since. He's a gifted writer who draws you in with his vivid descriptions and makes you truly care about his characters. His books are the type that you find difficult to put down -- you want to stay in his worlds and find out what happens next.
The Truth About Celia is one of the most beautiful and sorrowful novels I've ever read. It's also a book within a book -- it's a collection of short stories written by a fictional author named Christopher Brooks. Christopher is a successful science fiction author who lives with his wife Janet and seven-year-old daughter Celia. One day, while he is giving a tour of their historical home, Celia, who was playing in their backyard, simply vanishes. Poof.
