Ten years ago, Michel Gondy was directing “Mood Indigo,” his freewheeling and fanciful adaptation of the 1947 French novel “L’Écume des Jours” starring Audrey Tatou. And then he got lost.
“My brain was working in a different way,” he said over Zoom in a recent interview. “Each idea I had, no matter how important or small it was, became about life and death. Every little thing became super important. I felt like I was reaching ultimate creativity.”
He now looks back on the whole experience as a result of his delusional state. The movie ran long and over budget, angering Gondry’s investors. He escaped to the French countryside with his post-production team to finish the project on his own terms. The movie ran over two hours and got mixed reviews; a shorter version was released in the U.S. by Drafthouse Films several months later.

In the movie, the National Award winning actor plays a street magician who cons people into believing that he possesses supernatural powers. His character as Ajatashatru Lavash Patel has caught the attention of critics in a big way. Speaking about the actor, the film’s director Ken Scott has been quoted by the Indian Express as stating, “When I worked with Dhanush, I discovered a great actor and an amazing personality. It was a great experience during the Paris premieres and the press screenings to realise that the French audience and media felt the same about him and experienced the same delight and sense of wonder watching Dhanush in our film.” The producer of the film is also delighted with the positive response and has been quoted as saying: “The film had tested well early on during the editing process with a test audience in Paris, so we knew it would be well received. It was a treat reading the first reviews that emphasised the humanism of the film, its warmth, comedic quality and underlined the discovery of an incredible comedian they mostly didn’t know before this film with Dhanush.” Based on the novel by the same name, The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir is produced by Luc Bossi and Jon Goldman. Though Chicken with Plums and The Gang of the Jotas missed my radar, Marjane Satrapi proved herself to me as a distinct and vibrant filmmaker with a vision and voice to watch thanks to both Persepolis and this year's The Voices, the former co-directed with Vincent Paronnaud. Still with earnest hopes to stretch her potential, the graphic novelist-turned-filmmaker now signs on to adapt Romain Puertolas's best-selling and mouthful-of-a-title novel "The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir Who Got Trapped in an Ikea Wardrobe" as her fifth feature. The upcoming film, Satrapi's second English-languge feature, follows Ajatashatru Oghash Rathoda, a New Delhi trickster, who ends up in France and eventually falls in love with a Parisian woman, only to be deported accidentally with African refugees to the far corners of Europe. Indian star Dhanush is in talks to play the titular Fakir, while the director searches for three English-speaking actors to fill in three other pivotal roles.

There are some movies where the stars are the attraction, or maybe it's a premise that's too good to pass up. But for "Persepolis" director Marjane Satrapi, the title alone will ensure that my ticket will be purchased for her next movie. Variety reports that the filmmaker will direct an adaptation of Romain Puertolas’ best-selling "The Extraordinary Journey Of The Fakir Who Got Trapped In An Ikea Wardrobe." The author and Luc Bossi ("Mood Indigo") have co-written the script that follows a con artist who gets way in over his head in a story that takes him around Europe and beyond. Here's the book synopsis: Meet Ajatashatru Oghash Rathod. One day a fakir leaves his small village in India and lands in Paris. A professional con artist, the fakir is on a pilgrimage to Ikea, where he intends to obtain an object he covets above all others: a brand-new bed of nails.

From the moment it sputters to low-fi life, "Mood Indigo" is unmistakably the work of Michel Gondry, a sweet and sad little song of longing with the most visually inventive approach to emotion in any film this year. It is a strange surreal world that Gondry has created, one with no rules other than if someone in love starts coughing, that's not a good sign for them making it through to the end of the film. Gondry is a romantic, no doubt about it, and he's also a guy who rejects the idea of living a "normal" life, meaning his lead character is a man-child who drifts through his days, his whole mind focused on whimsy and the ridiculous. The worst thing in the world in this film is the notion of getting trapped into doing a "normal" job. Gondry seems to view that as death. Sure, he's working from a novel by Boris Vian,...

Impish and imaginative, Michel Gondry is a distinctive moviemaking voice operating at a whole new pitch with his latest, Mood Indigo. One of the film’s Heath Robinson-esque joys, plucked from the pages of Boris Vian’s source novel, is the pianocktail, a musical device that conjures novel cocktails based on the timbre, tone and pitch of notes played. The pianocktail is the star of a new clip that can be viewed using our vidocktail below. brightcove.createExperiences();Playful and surreal, but with a melancholy tinge, Mood Indigo is a Parisian tale of one man (Romain Duris), one woman (Audrey Tautou) and a strange floral growth on a pair of lungs. Co-written by Gondry and Luc Bossi, it’s largely faithful to Froth On The Daydream, a dreamy roman à clef that’s built generations of loyal readers since it was first published in 1947.That dreaminess translates into a...

Michel Gondry is something of an enigma in the film world, and one who reportedly found himself in an uncomfortable position during and after The Green Hornet. His latest, Mood Indigo, is hitting in limited release on July 18th, and its the film to see this summer, if you get the chance.
Returning to the wonder of his beginnings (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), and taking a lot of notes from the past thirty years of French cinema, and Jean-Pierre Jeunet (and, borrows his favorite leading lady), Gondry’s lastest looks like it could easily be one of the year’s best.

The first Us trailer has arrived for the French film, and this looks just as whimsical as Gondry's previous foreign entry Science of Sleep as Colin (Romain Duris) falls in love with Chloe (Audrey Tautou). There's some strange stair-climbing cars, a floating cloud vehicle and more strangeness as these two people fall in love in the most peculiar way. This truly looks original and charming, and we wouldn't expect anything less from a visionary director like Gondry. Watch! Here's the official Us trailer for Michel Gondry's Mood Indigo, originally from Apple: Editor's Note: We've already featured trailers for this film before, but this one is for the Us release. Mood Indigo is directed by Michael Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) from...

Mood Indigo
Directed by Michel Gondry
Written by Michel Gondry and Luc Bossi
France/Belgium, 2013
Adapted from Boris Vian’s cult novel, commonly translated as Froth on the Daydream, Michel Gondry’s latest film is a riotous, whimsical journey with a lot more to say than initially meets the eye. The opening sequence threatens to drown you in a cavalcade of offbeat animation and special effects, including a stop motion eel, an insect-like doorbell, a TV chef who passes ingredients through the screen and a miniature man dressed up like a mouse. Gondry’s indulgence throws down the gauntlet right away – either you’re in or you’re out. Mood Indigo can be bewildering, exasperating, infuriating, but, then again, it can be utterly transportive.
It stars Romain Duris as Colin, a wealthy bachelor who lives in a luxurious Parisian apartment with his cook/lawyer/intellectual guide Nicolas (Omar Sy). He...

They say timing is everything, and somehow, I managed to have good timing with some of the clothes I chose to wear to Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. (Bear with me and my nerdiness.) I had picked out an Epcot-specific T-shirt to wear to Day Two of Fantastic Fest, in some goofy way to tie into Escape from Tomorrow, which screened that morning. Of course, then I thought I wouldn’t be attending said screening; the machinations that went into place to secure me a spot, as mentioned in that Day Two report happened so immediately that I realized I was no longer ironically dressed for the occasion in Disney gear. But as it happens, I wore that shirt, with the design of The American Adventure, the centerpiece of Epcot’s World Showcase, to Day Four of the festival. And, as luck would have it, a shirt commemorating one aspect...

Title: The Prey (La proie) Cohen Media Group Director: Eric Valette Screenwriter: Laurent Turner, Luc Bossi Cast: Albert Dupontel, Alice Taglioni, Stéphane Debac, Sergi López, Nathacha Régnier, Serve Hazanavicius Screened at: Review 1, NYC, 5/29/13 Opens: June 7, 2013 One might guess that Eric Valette, who directs “The Prey,” was influenced by Tom Tykwer’s 1998 movie “Run Lola Run.” That one found a German woman needing to get a large sum of money to her boyfriend in twenty minutes before he robs a supermarket. “La proie,” as this film is called in its original French, does not follow the same concept but not since 1998 have I ever seen so [ Read More ]

Scripted by Laurent Turner and Luc Bossi, the story follows Franck Adrien (Albert Dupontel), a bank robber convicted of a heist and sentenced to six months in prison, who shares a cell with seemingly weak Jean Louis Morel. Not long after Morel’s release, it is revealed that Morel is a sadistic serial killer, and knows private details of Adrien’s life. Adrien must break out of prison, pursue Morel, and evade the most elite French police teams hunting him.

Filmmaker Michel Gondry gained a lot of fans with his 2004 feature Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a movie that ended up on its fair share of Best of the Decade lists. Following a brief foray into mainstream superhero action with 2011′s The Green Hornet, Gondry reverted back to his brand of unique filmmaking, taking on the reins of the adaptation of the Boris Vian novel L’écume des jours. Gondry stays behind the camera for this movie, which retains the same french name while being retitled Mood Indigo in english, working from a script by Luc Bossi, and a cast that includes Audrey Tautou, Romain Duris, and Omar Sy. The first trailer for the feature has now been released, and can be seen below.

As we’ve told you before, the first trailer for Oscar-winning Michel Gondry’s next big movie, Mood Indigo (French: L’Écume des jours) has just arrived.
Based upon Boris Vian‘s 1947 novel of the same name, the films stars Romain Duris (The Beat that My Heart Skipped), Audrey Tautou (Amelie), Omar Sy (The Intouchables), and Gad Elmaleh (Midnight In Paris). The screenplay was co-written by Luc Bossi and Gondry himself.
There’s not a lot of dialogue in this French-language teaser which displays Gondry’s wonderfully symmetrical eye for a touch of whimsy that comes from the giddiness of love, and the pain that accompanies it.
The film tells the story of the wealthy inventor of the cocktail-mixing piano who marries a woman, who develops an illness during their honeymoon thanks to a water lily that enters her lung, and the only way to treat the ailment is to...

Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) returns behind the camera to bring us Mood Indigo this spring, another fantastical drama that we can’t wait to see.
Led by Audrey Tautou (Amélie) and Romain Duris (The Beat That Skipped My Heart), the first poster for the film debuted earlier in the month. And after a handful of weird and wonderful first images late last year, the underwater setting of the first poster confirmed that this is going to be another great and playful picture from Gondry.
And with its April release in France approaching, the first international trailer has debuted online, and it is brilliant.
Courtesy of Google Translate, the synopsis in English looks a little something like this, with a few tweaks from myself to make it a little more comprehensible:
“The surreal and poetic story of an idealistic and inventive young man, Colin, who meets Chloe,...

We told you nearly two years ago that outstanding Audrey Tautou will appear in Oscar-winning Michel Gondry’s next big movie. Last summer some surreal images also popped out, but it was impossible to understand what the movie is about by browsing the photos alone.
Now the first poster for the new drama Mood Indigo with fantastical elements has been unveiled, and it puts the film’s stars, Tautou and Romain Duruis, underwater.
Mood Indigo is based upon Boris Vian‘s 1947 novel ‘L’Écume des Jours’ (Froth on the Daydream) which tells the story of the wealthy inventor of an olfactory musical instrument who marries a woman, who develops an illness that can only be treated by surrounding her with flowers — an expense that soon drains his funds.
Penned by Luc Bossi, the ideal Gondry project also stars Omar Sy, Vincent London, Gad Elmaleh, Alain Chabet, Charlotte Le Bon, Aïssa Maïga,...

Have Michel Gondry's still-in-production movies always been this heavily covered by the press? Either way, after the relative secrecy behind the making of "The We And The I" which premiered at Cannes Directors' Fortnight earlier this year, the filmmaker and everyone else behind "Mood Indigo" have been happy to let press descend upon Gondry's latest film. We've already seen a batch of official stills drop and now we've got one more look at the film's leads, Audrey Tautou and Romain Duris. Le Figaro recently sat down with producer and screenwriter Luc Bossi to talk about the film, an adaptation of Boris Vian's novel, that tells the imaginative story of a man who tries to keep his love alive after a water lily enters her lungs. "I wanted to find a story that has [had] legendary status for fifty years, and that may appeal to all generations...We wrote a very faithful adaptation,...
