Exclusive: Fox’s 2023-2024 schedule will not include the network’s two highest-rated drama series of 2022-23.
The move of flagship 9-1-1 to ABC was announced in May. Now its spinoff, 9-1-1: Lone Star, which was renewed for a fifth season by Fox in May, will not return with new episodes this spring. Instead, the drama starring Rob Lowe will produce 12 episodes to air in fall 2024, making fans’ wait for Season 5 extra long.
Like any other linear or streaming series, 9-1-1: Lone Star has been impacted by the double Hollywood strikes. Earlier this fall, Fox and producing studio 20th Television had been discussing an 18-episode order — six episodes for midseason — and 12 for fall, sources said. As the SAG-AFTRA strike stretched into November, those plans changed, and the two sides ultimately agreed on 12 episodes for fall 2024.
Fox needs 9-1-1: Lone Star next fall.

Fox is bringing in some repeats of 9-1-1: Lone Star to its fall schedule as it tries to remind viewers that scripted drama still has a place on broadcast TV amid the writers and actors strikes.
The move sees unscripted competition series I Can See Your Voice, which has completed production of its third season, to midseason.
Season 4 of 9-1-1: Lone Star will air starting on Tuesday September 19 at 9 pm, after season 3 of Name That Tune.
The hope is that it can get some traction for the return of 9-1-1: Lone Star with its fifth season once the dual strikes are over. It comes as the show’s parent show 9-1-1 was not renewed by Fox in May, instead set to move to ABC, whose sibling studio 20th TV produces, once the strikes are over.

Criminal Nature, a National Parks-set procedural starring Michaela McManus and Parker Young, is not moving forward at ABC, TVLine has learned.

ABC will not be moving forward with drama pilot Criminal Nature, from Rashad Raisani, 20th Television and A+E Studios.
Criminal Nature was one of two remaining “second cycle” ABC pilots that had not heard about their fates, along with fellow drama The Company You Keep, starring and executive produced by This Is Us alum Milo Ventimiglia. I hear the latter continues to look promising for a series pickup. Like drama pilot Will Trent, which was picked up to series this month. The Company You Keep also had started a writers room in anticipation of a series order. In another encouraging sign, The Company You Keep also has brought on seasoned writer-producer Phil Klemmer as co-showrunner, I hear.

Starring Michaela McManus, Parker Young and Ian Duff and written by Raisani, Criminal Nature (fka Untitled National Parks Project) was a soapy procedural set in the stunning world of America’s great outdoors.

ABC has opted not to pick up the drama pilot “Criminal Nature” to series.
This is now the second time the project has been passed over at the broadcast network. A different iteration of the pilot with a different creative team — which included Kevin Costner as co-writer — was in the works at ABC in 2021 before being axed in July.
The new version, which had been titled “Criminal Nature,” was part of ABC’s 2022 pilot season slate. It was described as a soapy procedural set in the stunning world of America’s great outdoors. Before launching “9-1-1” with Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk as a Fox midseason drama in January 2018, Tim Minear was a prolific producer with many impressive TV credits under his belt. Minear, who has the longest-running overall deal at “9-1-1” studio 20th Television, is best known for his work on “Angel,” “Firefly,” “Dollhouse,” “American Horror Story,” “Terriers,” “Feud,” “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman” and “Wonderfalls.” But of those shows, the ones he personally created are best known for being very short-lived. Case in point: ever the self-aware-dark-humorist, Minear’s now-deactivated Twitter handle used to be @CancelledAgain.
“For the longest time, it was always like, what’s the hit network show?” Minear, who is “9-1-1” and spinoff “9-1-1: Lone Star” co-showrunner, told Variety. “That’s what the studio wants me to do, they want me to come up with a hit network show, and all I wanted to do was weird little cable things.

Rashad Raisani, an exec producer on Fox’s 9-1-1: Lone Star, is writing and exec producing a brand new take. The news comes after the network passed on the Costner co-penned and exec produced version in July 2021.

The series is a “soapy” procedural set in the world of national parks. It revolves around the tangled, messy lives of the agents who work for the Isb — an elite law-enforcement unit responsible for solving all serious crimes that occur in our country’s 81,000 square miles of protected land.
Raisani, who began his career on USA Network’s Burn Notice, where he rose from staff writer to co-exec producer, will exec produce with A+E Studios’ Barry Jossen and Tana Jamieson.

ABC has ordered a new pilot for the drama about the National Parks Investigative Services Branch, Variety has learned.
The broadcaster commissioned a pilot for the project last year as well with a different creative team, though it ultimately did not go forward. The original team included Kevin Costner as co-writer and executive producer, but Costner is no longer attached to the project in any capacity.

A violent dust storm hit Austin on Monday’s 9-1-1: Lone Star finale, but even after it settled, the future of the 126 remained unclear.
Let’s start with Tommy, who began the hour by deciding to resign from her position in order to care for her daughters at home. (Charles’ life insurance turned out to be “more than she expected,” affording her the chance to become a full-time mom.) But after an especially eventful day of saving lives — which was encouraged by her daughters, who reminded Tommy that the world still needs her — she opted to remain in the game.

Fox has renewed both 9-1-1 and spinoff 9-1-1: Lone Star for new seasons. The network has ordered a fifth season of the hit first-responders procedural drama series 9-1-1 from Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, and a third season of spinoff 9-1-1: Lone Star.
9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star are Fox’s top two scripted so the renewals are not a surprise. 9-1-1 will return to the fall after its fourth season premiered in January due to the pandemic, while 9-1-1: Lone Star, which also premiered its first two seasons in January, will return midseason.
Michael Thorn, President of Entertainment at Fox, also teased a crossover event between the two shows for next season.
Created by Murphy, Falchuk and Minear, 9-1-1 explores the high-pressure experiences of police officers, firefighters, and dispatchers who are thrust into frightening, shocking and heart-stopping situations.

Liv Tyler has decided against returning to Fox’s “9-1-1: Lone Star” for the show’s upcoming second season, TheWrap has confirmed.

Her role will not be recast and the void created by her departure will be filled by Gina Torres, who is joining the cast for the upcoming season.

Liv Tyler will not appear in the upcoming second season of “9-1-1: Lone Star” on Fox, Variety has confirmed.
According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Tyler approached producers over the summer about exiting the show, despite having a multi-year contract. Her decision was due at least in part to concerns about traveling back and forth from her home in the U.K. to shoot the show in the U.S. with the Covid-19 pandemic still affecting both countries. Her character, Michelle Blake, will not be recast or killed off, leaving the door open for her to return.

The first season of “9-1-1: Lone Star” comes to a shocking conclusion with a two-hour finale Monday night. Like, literally shocking if TheWrap’s exclusive sneak peek from the second hour is any indication.
In the clip from Episode 110, titled “Austin, We Have a Problem,” which you can view via the video above, you’ll see Owen (Rob Lowe) informed that Michelle (Liv Tyler) hasn’t checked in with the 126 this morning. But before he can figure out where she might be and what she might be up to, a power surge suddenly hits the station and makes everything that runs on electricity go haywire.
Naturally, the sequence is set to Oingo Boingo’s “Weird Science” because, well, it’s a super weird science-y situation. Now, we have no idea what this actually means, but we know it’s not good!

As a first-responder, the first thing you learn is you can’t save everyone from death — especially if they’re already dead when you arrive to try and help them. That’s the situation Michelle (Liv Tyler) and her team find themselves in TheWrap’s exclusive clip from tonight’s “9-1-1: Lone Star.”
In the video, which you can view above, the Austin paramedics respond to a call from a man who is concerned about his mother’s health. Welp, turns out his mom is definitely already deceased and from the looks of her rotting corpse, she has been for a few days.
The problem here is, when Michelle tries — very gently, might we add — to tell this man that his dearly departed mom has dearly departed, he refuses to accept this reality. And then he pulls a sword on her and the rest of the team to get them...

‘9-1-1: Lone Star’ Showrunner Tim Minear Cold On Crossover Episodes But Open To More Spin-Offs – TCA
9-1-1: Lone Star showrunner Tim Minear is open to more spin-offs of the Fox procedural franchise but has no immediate plans for a third iteration. Minear also played down the idea of crossover episodes between 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star.
Ryan Murphy told Deadline last year that he was “talking about doing a third one” but Minear said that there was nothing concrete in the works. But he joked, “Am I going to Dick Wolf the series? Hell, yeah.”
Speaking at Fox’s TCA Winter Press Tour presentation, he said that he wanted 9-1-1: Lone Star, which is set in Austin, Texas to stand on its own. “The idea is to have the brand grow in a way that feels organic and natural. We didn’t want to jump into a new iteration until we felt like we had something else to say.” He added that the...

Fox has given put pilot commitment to two high-profile cop drama projects, Connect, from writer Rashad Raisani, producers Howard Gordon, McG and 20th Century Fox TV; and Prodigal Son, from writers Chris Fedak and Sam Sklaver, Berlanti Prods. and Warner Bros. TV.
The buys from soon-to-be former corporate sibling 20th TV and indie Wbtv illustrate the strategy for “New Fox” laid out by the network’s current bosses in August. It involves a significant reduction of the network’s dependence on 20th TV, which will soon become part of Disney, this development season. Last year, the network’s sister studio was responsible for 90% of its scripted development. The goal is for that number will go to 50% this season as Fbc transitions to being an independent network with no affiliated studio.
Connect, from 20th TV, Intrigue Entertainment and Wonderland Sound and Vision, is written by Raisani based on a French format.

Fox has given put-pilot commitments to two new drama projects.
“Connect,” from executive producer Howard Gordon, is based on the French television series. It’s described as an adrenalized procedural about a brash hero with a gift that he will use to assist his cop brother with whom he has a troubled relationship. Each week we will see these two not only solving crimes but working to reconnect. The project hails from writer and exec producer Rashad Raisani, 20th Century Fox Television, Intrigue Entertainment, and Wonderland Sound and Vision.
“Prodigal Son,” from executive producers Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, follows the character of Malcolm Bright, who gift gives him the ability to know how killers think, how their minds work. Why? Back in the ‘90s, his father was one of the worst—a notorious serial killer called “The Surgeon.” That’s why Bright is the best criminal psychologist around; murder is the family business.
