In addition to sharing their love of horror on Daily Dead, our team of writers stay busy pursuing other passion projects on the creative front, and Sam Hart is certainly no exception. Readers of his Graphic Nature column know that Hart has a deep interest and understanding of macabre music and terrifying tunes, and he's teamed up with artist Trevor "Morbid" Markwart to channel that passion into an EC Comics-style exploration of black metal in a new graphic novel called Tales From the Black Circle.
Set to kick off an Indiegogo campaign shortly, Tales From the Black Circle captures the spirit of EC Comics with eye-popping artwork and eerie dialogue dripping with equal parts horror and humor. As the black metal scene in the late ’80s and early ’90s proved, sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction, and Tales From the Black Circle dives into shocking true stories of a time of turmoil,...

Today, in a series of music videos released to accompany their forthcoming highly anticipated album “Hardwired … To Self Destruct”, Metallica has premiered “ManUNkind” directed by Jonas Åkerlund and starring Rory Culkin, Jack Kilmer, and Sky Ferreira from the upcoming feature film Lords of Chaos. “ManUNkind” is the exclusive first-look at the characters of Lords of Chaos, which is currently in production. Åkerlund’s Lords of Chaos is the story of Mayhem, a young Norwegian band that popularized a form of heavy metal music known as “True Norwegian Black Metal” with a flair for publicity, church-burning, and even murder. The film stars Rory Culkin as ‘Euronymous,’ Emory Cohen as ‘Varg,’ Jack [ Read More ]

The sordid history of black metal has long fascinated headbangers and outsiders alike. More than just a lo-fi genre of extreme music, it was thought of by its ardent practitioners as a movement — and, like most movements founded upon ill-advised and/or xenophobic ideals, it eventually turned violent. Vice Films, Insurgent Media and 20th Century Fox are bringing black metal’s most infamous story to the screen with “Lords of Chaos,” an adaptation of the book by Michael Moynihan and Didrik Søderlind.

There are a whole host of assumptions about what sort of music, fashion and other cultural accoutrements black people like here in North America, and really all around the world. 'Urban' is the usual code word, and 'urban' in the music scene means hip hop and r&b. And while white kids may like to borrow 'urban' culture from time to time the cultural assumption is very much that those things belong to, and come from, the black community while rock and country belong to the whites. And that's especially the case with metal and punk. But South African director Wim Steytler has discovered that's not entirely the case within his home country and with his new documentary short Black Black Metal he charts the rise...

Take a look below at the first sneak peak of a scene from the upcoming Norwegian documentary Blackhearts, due out in early 2016. Production company Gammaglimt is about to launch a crowdfunding campaign to finance the remaining post production November 17th at IndieGoGo, and will feature one-of-a-kind perks donated personally by the godfathers of Norwegian Black Metal. Norwegian Black Metal gained worldwide infamy in the early 1990s due to its link to Satanism and a series of church burnings, murders and suicides. The documentary Blackhearts follows three die hard black metal fans from Colombia, Iran and Greece as they risk their life, end up in jail and sell their soul to Satan as they pursue the dream of bringing their bands to the unholy birthplace...

“Yet the punctum shows no preference for morality or good taste; the punctum can be ill-bred.” —Roland Barthes, Camera LucidaThe first rude challenge of this movie is watching it without permanently devaluing Spring Breakers as a hot, precious high-conceptualist mess compared to the crisp genre elegance on parade here. I can’t be certain, but it seems like Harmony Korine dreamed up his movie drowsing behind his shades during a matinee reverie of this insta-classic. If not, he should have! The plot has a documentary-like simplicity. Maybe it really happened. Ancestral fish-freaks buzzsaw into the thumping “sexy-time” heart of American youth culture, during a Spring Break weekend on a desert lake in Arizona. That’s it. The Sayles/Dante original, recall if you must, was a lame anti-authoritarian parable (the seminal proto-SyFy Channel movie) with occasional dark comic touches. Piranha 3D is not a parable of anything, thank Corman! It...

Lords of Chaos is your classic “young friends become enemies” tale, but with a few shocking twists. For one, the friends in question were in bands that helped define a metal subgenre that is now an established cornerstone of the metal scene. They were also linked to a rash of arson cases — specifically, the burning of churches in Norway. Hanging […]

The 21st annual Chicago Underground Film Festival, which will run April 2-6 at the Logan Theater, will be extra special this year. Why? Because Mike Everleth, the Executive Editor of the Underground Film Journal, is sitting on this year’s festival jury! And looking over the fest lineup below, he is incredibly excited to witness this visual extravaganza of revolutionary cinematic madness. (Other jurors are Brian Chankin, Therese Grisham and Alison Cuddy.)

Closing Night Film: Usama Alshaibi will be making his triumphant return to Chicago with his latest documentary, American Arab, a personal and sociological examination of what it means to be an Arab in a post-9/11 United States. This...

Image recently announced a Chew/Revival crossover, which is… well… hard to picture until you view the promotional art for the covers, one of which is drawn Rob Guillory-style, the other rendered by Mike Norton. Revival is a “rural noir” about the dead coming back to life; Chew is an ongoing fan favorite about a cibopathic (read: gets psychic visions from food) named Tony Chu. Seeing these two seemingly disparate properties on the same cover is quite a trip.
I’m game to see how the plot plays out. Something tells me it’s going to involve corpse-chewing.
Idw has been doing similar things recently, culminating in this week’s trade release of Mars Attacks Judge Dredd (so far the Martians have attacked Transformers, Popeye, and Kiss, among other properties). Last year they bashed together the heads of Star Trek and Doctor Who in Assimilation.

In years past, I have attempted to present this extended article as a preview; my aim has been to send it off into the world either the day before of the day of Tiff's kick-off. That has proven impossible this year, and, dear reader, I am heartily sorry for having offended thee... But the fact that Wavelengths is a beat that is becoming harder and harder for one person to adequately cover is undoubtedly a sign of good health. Since last year, when Tiff enfolded the former Visions section (a space for formally adventurous narrative features) into Wavelengths (Tiff's experimental showcase), not only has interest in the section grown exponentially. Well, it’s nearly August, and summer is officially in full swing. And if you’re a fan of heavy metal and horror, I’ve got the scoop on what you should be sporting on the beach this summer. Forget the polka-dot bikini girls, because right now it’s all about Sepultura, skeletons, and Satan.
There are few things more hardcore than Brazilian band, Sepultura. This Monokini, based on the bands 1985 album “Bestial Devastation”, is the creation of Quebec based Speed Clothing. Back in the early 1960′s, Rudi Gernreich, an Austrian-born American fashion designer, introduced the world to the first Monokini, which was topless.
Here’s another satanic Monokini from Speed Clothing, this time featuring artwork inspired by New Jersey thrash band, Blood Feast. Both of these completely metal Monokini’s will run you about $90. It’s a small price to pay to ensure you look like the spawn of...

See an antelope leap into a car to avoid pursuit and the Tootsie star explain how he got into character in our online clip rundown
We start this week's video selection with the impala that cheetah'd death by leaping into a tourist car during a safari. As if being on safari wasn't exciting enough, imagine what it would be like to gain an extra passenger – with a ferocious wild animal hot on its tail.
If that video gets your heart racing, you need to watch an amazingly tranquil and beautiful film from Simon Christen. Made over two years, it uses time-lapse photography to capture the fog descending over San Francisco.
We've also got a fascinating interview with Dustin Hoffman, who chokes back the tears when he describes the lengths he went to to play Dorothy Michaels in the film Tootsie. When he asked the makeup team to make him "more...

When Cinema East began during the Summer of 2010, Austin truly became the city of my dreams. Life does not get much better than spending hot summer nights, outside on a picnic blanket, with some adult beverages, watching some of my favorite films of the festival circuit with an audience of 300 - 600 cinephiles, hipsters and everyone in between. I could do without the humidity and the mosquitoes, but otherwise Cinema East is as close to heaven as I will probably ever get. Gates open at 7 pm, with DJ sets from Samantha Garrett and Mike Z of Deep Cuts keeping the eardrums of the masses occupied until the films begin (approximately 9 pm). The Austin Audio Co-op will be debuting their new 24'x13.5' screen as the official providers of sound and projection for the 2013 season. Oh, and for all of the movie-loving pups out there, Cinema East is a very dog-friendly environment...

Here's the latest in Austin film news.
Disney has hired Dfw-area filmmaker (and former Austinite) David Lowery and producer Toby Halbrooks, whose film Ain't Them Bodies Saints premiered at Sundance this year, to script a remake of the animated movie Pete's Dragon. If this sounds unlikely, bear in mind that Lowery's first feature, St. Nick, was about two children who run away from home. And don't forget his short Pioneer, about a father and son. (Jette adds: Now, someone please release St. Nick on DVD? Finally?)Austin-based filmmaker Elizabeth Mims' documentary Only the Young (Elizabeth's Aff review), which follows three Southern California teenagers, will air July 15 on PBS's award-winning TV series Pov, according to Austin Movie Blog.In festival news, the Hill Country Film Festival announced its lineup last week, which includes the feature-length thriller The Iceman, starring James Franco, and the 2013 Academy Award-winning short Curfew. The festivities take place May 2-5 in Fredericksburg.

Why He's On Our Radar: With four films at Sundance 2013 and a whopping seven (four features and three shorts) at the recently wrapped 2013 SXSW Film Festival, Austin-based actor/filmmaker has already had a banner year -- and it's only mid March. Mars, last at SXSW with his directorial debut, the Dallas Cowboys documentary "America's Parking Lot," spent the bulk of his time at SXSW this year shelling his lead role in the moving dramedy "Good Night," co-starring "Girls" regular Alex Karpovsky. On the feature front, Mars also had supporting parts in "Pit Stop," "A Teacher" and "Computer Chess," all of which premiered in Park City before making their way to Austin (and all of which were made in Texas). And on the short front, he played a heavy metal rocker in "Black Metal," and appeared in "Follow" and "Hell No." What's Next: "I just did a couple days on David Gordon Green...

In 1982 I hosted a radio show on Friday nights from midnight to 2 a.m. called, “The Metal Spotlight” at McMaster University’s Cfmu 93.3 FM. Venom had just released the literally genre defining “Black Metal” album and I was happily spinning that as well as what I understood at the time to be ‘occult metal’; bands like Witchfynde. Slayer was on the horizon as was the development of thrash bands with occult overtones like Sepultura. ’82 also saw the debut of metal’s most prominent Satanist, King Diamond whose band Mercyful Fate released an Ep of furiously epic blasphemy in the fall of that year.
It was a good time to be young and annoyed with one’s creator. That being said it’s been suggested in the ensuing decades that perhaps all that Satan worshipping wasn’t as sincere as the bands would have had us believe. Whatever you (or they...

Last week we gave you the breakdown on some cool horror titles and other genre-friendly entries from Austin's upcoming South By Southwest Festival, and now we've got even more good news: the promoters have now announced the fest's Midnighters lineup, as well as the short film selections – and there's a gold mine of horror entries in there too. The Midnighters include world premieres of Mike Mendez's monster epic Big Ass Spider! (formerly Mega Spider – check out our interview with Mike here), Vincenzo Natali' s Haunter starring Abigail Breslin, vampire romance Kiss of the Damned and supernatural thriller Cheap Thrills. Rob Zombie's The Lords of Salem will see its Us premiere, and S-vhs (aka V/Hs/2) will also be screening, along with Adam Wingard's You're Next. The short film lineup is huge, weighing in at over a hundred selections, with many horror and extreme cinema titles among them.

Last week, we posted a video that might satisfy some of you wanting to see the guerilla-made film shot within Disney called Escape from Tomorrow with Missing in the Mansion. Luckily, the organizers know not all film aficionados can attend the film festival (hell, we can’t) so they have made some pretty amazing short films available on YouTube for public viewing. We have gone through and picked the ones that feel like they belong on the site and included the official synopsis and a general thought about the film.
The Apocalypse
Four uninspired friends try to come up with a terrific idea for how to spend their Saturday afternoon.
Our thoughts: Hilarious. Martin Starr stars in this one and it definitely is a very absurd short that should be viewed immediately.

A phrase often heard at the Sundance Film Festival is "how to fest," and lesson number one that I've learned is that being on time isn't good enough, be early. A few times I've had ample time before an event, and filled in the gap with the frivolity of eating a meal. What I've then found is that I miss a couple of small events that fill up -- nothing major, but not the ideal scenario. Thankfully Sundance has so much to experience that flexibility is key, as you never know who you may meet on the shuttle bus or in line at a screening.
A highlight of my Sunday: Day Four was the Texas Party, presented by the Austin Film Society and Texas Monthly, and crowded with Austin and Texas filmmakers such as the Arts + Labor crew (seen above) including cast and crew from Pit Stop, Hearts of Napalm and Black Metal.

I didn't go to Park City for the Sundance Film Festival this year. I know I'm missing lots of good movies, but on the other hand, it was 70 degrees in Austin yesterday, while Sundance festgoers are dealing with single-digit and even negative-number temperatures. I'm too delicate a flower for that kind of weather.
Fortunately, there are a number of ways in which we in Austin (or anywhere) can have a taste of the Sundance experience from the comfort of our homes. Before you enjoy the videos below, if you want an authentic Sundance experience you could crank up the air conditioning, put on some thermal underwear, and consume only power bars and coffee. If you want to simulate the press-and-industry experience, you might get a jerky friend to sit next to you and play with their smartphone the whole time, but I think that's going too far.

Tons of notable entries from established auteurs, documentarians and the next generation of filmmakers to watch out for are the make-up of Sundance’s 2013 Short Film program. Organized by Fango contributor John Nicol and myself, Fangoria’S Black Sunday at Club 3030 was a splendid affair, packed with pundits poured into costumes of all kinds and featuring FX man Paul Jones, who brought his Red Pyramid suit from Silent Hill: Revelation and made up one of the bartenders as a Sh nurse. Paul and I even hosted a wild, barely controlled costume contest.
The substances flowed freely, the vintage pinball machines dinged and the music blasted until the wee hours. A good time was had by all, with Canadian Fango freaks and new converts sharing space and braving Sandy’s wrath (yes, up here we also took a smaller smack from the storm).
Thanks to Fango fotographer and contributor David Goodfellow, we even have the pics to prove that the party was legit. Have a look…

"Ready, Set, Fund," is a column about crowdfunding and related fundraising endeavors for Austin and Texas independent film projects.
The Austin Film Festival has announced their first round of conference panels for 2012, and the title that came immediately to my attention was the "Crowdfunding Your Indie Film" panel. The panel of to-be-named filmmakers will discuss how to use modern technology to connect and solicit funding from backers for their film projects.
If I had to speculate what local filmmaker I'd most like to see on this Aff panel, it would be Kat Candler, pictured above on left with Carla L. Jackson and Kelvin Z. Candler exceeded her fundraising goals on past projects including Hellion as well as for the Ut Austin student organization Women In Cinema Summer Production and Operations, for which she is the faculty advisor. I am half-excited for this film. There is a tone to it that I am really digging, but parts of the trailer seem a bit trope-ish to me. I like me some Ethan Hawke (Snow Falling on Cedars is My Jam!), so I hope he can carry the emotion necessary to maintain the storyline. I like the detective element of it and it looks to be doing something right as a film. The mysterious force haunting the family looks like a lost member of a Norwegian Black Metal band, doesn’t he? I’m digging it, though.
