With their recent Dracula series by James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds and their upcoming Frankenstein series from Michael Walsh, Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics have teamed up with Universal Products & Experiences to bring the iconic Universal Monsters from the big screen to the paneled page, and now readers can return to the swamp to get reacquainted with another classic cinematic character in Universal Monsters: Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives!
Written by Dan Watters (Home Sick Pilots) and Ram V (Dawnrunner), and featuring artwork by Matthew Roberts (Manifest Destiny) and coloring by Dave Stewart (Hellboy), the first issue of Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives! is now available from Skybound, and Daily Dead had the pleasure of catching up with Dan Watters and Ram V in a video interview to discuss continuing the legacy of the Creature in a story that's set years following the events of the 1954 film,...

1954's "The Creature From The Black Lagoon" was the last gasp of Universal Pictures' black-and-white horror heyday. Pivoting away from literary adaptations towards something more resembling contemporary man-in-suit monster movies, "Black Lagoon" introduced one last staple of the Universal Monster line-up: The Gill-man. A missing link in the evolutionary chain, the amphibian man has the same mix of terror and lovelorn pathos as his monstrous brethren.
It's not quite the pop-culture staple that "Dracula" and "Frankenstein" are, but "The Creature From The Black Lagoon" has been reimagined many times (most famously in 2017 with Guillermo del Toro's Best Picture-winning oddball romance "The Shape of Water" — it was almost black-and-white like "Black Lagoon" too). Now a new comic book starring the Gill-Man comes forth from Skybound Entertainment, boasting a title that belongs to a forgotten Universal Horror picture: "The Creature From The Black Lagoon Lives!"
Skybound isn't just revitalizing "The Transformers" and "G.I. Joe.

Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein remains as influential as ever, with numerous notable adaptations and horror movies inspired by the literary classic released in the last year alone. That extends to comics, too, with Skybound Entertainment revealing via IGN today that they’re reviving the horror icon with comic series Universal Monsters: Frankenstein.
Universal Monsters: Frankenstein #1 will be released on August 28, 2024.
The four-issue limited series will be written and drawn by The Silver Coin creator Michael Walsh. The limited series follows up Skybound’s Universal Monsters: Dracula and Universal Monsters: Creature From the Black Lagoon series.
Like its predecessors, Universal Monsters: Frankenstein won’t be a straightforward adaptation. In the comic, “Dr. Henry Frankenstein robs a police officer’s grave to find body parts for his new creation, only to discover that the officer’s son is still yearning for his dead father. How does this discovery impact both creature and creator?...

It's not certain when there'll next be a new Spider-Man movie in theaters. 2023 gave us one of the best ones yet with "Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse," but the sequel "Beyond The Spider-Verse" doesn't have a concrete release date. Tom Holland's live-action web-slinger is probably returning, but his fourth outing is currently in pre-production.
Fortunately, there are decades of great comics if you need your Spider-Man fix. Some of the best of this past decade, all written by Chip Zdarsky (a pen name for Steve Murray), are now collected all in a single omnibus edition. If you're a Spider-Man movie fan, you'd be remiss not to swing over to a comic shop or bookstore and seek this out.
Zdarsky was once a journalist with a side hustle drawing indie comics, but in the 2010s, he grew into a blockbuster writer for the Big Two companies of superhero comics (he's currently...

Firefighter Louis finds the coin amidst a pile of burnt wreckage and it immediately awakens feelings in him he’s long suppressed. Louis has a dark side and the coin is delighted to help Louis bring that to the fore as he embarks on a killing spree. But the coin has a way of deceiving its holder and Louis’s service to the coin will be his ultimate undoing.
Michael Walsh continues to deliver the best horror comic on the shelves, and we hope his hiatus to enjoy the birth of his first child is a fantastic one. The coin will return!

The Silver Coin #14 Written by Pornsak Pichetshote | Art by Michael Walsh
2020 was a bad year. Whilst the world struggles with the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, Darren and Lauren’s relationship is breaking down. The pandemic has scuppered Lauren’s film work and Darren’s scriptwriting career is stalling, arguments are commonplace and Darren becomes increasingly jealous of Lauren’s relationship with her friend Colton.
Interspersed with their domestic troubles, Darren has horrific visions of Colton torturing Lauren. The demonic Puritan also makes an appearance to see if Darren is the one he is seeking. But as Darren fights back against them, a little silver coin makes an appearance in a monumental ending!

Avengers 1,000,000 BC #1 Written by Jason Aaron | Art by Kev Walker
‘Revealed! The Phoenix’s connection to the birth of Thor!’ screams the cover. What pray tell do Aaron & Walker have in store for us?
Well, essentially there’s a bizarre love triangle between Odin, Phoenix and Gaea with some frost giants thrown in as villains. Phoenix spurns Odin at the altar, Odin hooks up with Gaea and they conceive Thor, the frost giants come back for revenge and freeze baby Thor who’s promptly reignited back to life by the Phoenix power. The other Avengers hang around and mutter a bit but really don’t add anything to the story.

In the life of every licensed superhero comic, there will come an especially blessed day: Baby’s First Crossover.
This, my dear hearts and gentle people, is that blessed event for the unnamed super-team of Jeff Lemire’s Black Hammer comics. [1] Oh, you may quibble that they have already met quite a lot of other superheroes and villains, fighting and teaming up and generating a lot of Licensable Content. But all of those previous encounters were from Lemire’s universe as well; those calls were all coming from inside the house.
For the first time here, someone else deigned to have a play-date with Black Hammer, to let their toys play with the Black Hammer toys, to touch the dolls’ faces together to make them kiss. Those heroes are the current Justice League, the someone is DC Comics, and it is a bit like Barbie and GI Joe in the hands of an hyperactive eight-year-old.

The Silver Coin #11 Written by James Tynion IV | Art by Michael Walsh
You know that you’re in for a shocker when the cover is a chef butchering someone’s arm!
Jean works a diner that’s steadily been losing custom since Wamburger opened. Receiving an odd looking coin as a tip she kisses the coin and wishes for a diner full of hungry people. Next morning there’s a queue of starving people who want to be fed. And fed. And fed. They will stop at nothing to feed their hunger and as Jean realises the folly of her wish she looks like she’s next on the menu…...

“Welcome, Katherine Frith (Kate Bosworth) and Michael Walsh (Emile Hirsch). You have been chosen to spend 50 days in the Immaculate Room and will win 5 million by completing the task. If one of you leaves, the prize money drops to 1 million for the person that remains. Enjoy your stay in the Immaculate Room.” So intones the Hal-like intelligence that monitors the Immaculate Room—a white-walled, white-floored, white-everythinged space (with stylish en suite), into which meals are dispensed via blank milk cartons, and over the door of which looms an ominous 50-day timer.

Long before I started watching the delightfully deadly adventures of Riverdale, I spent many mornings watching Archie and the gang deal with everything from zombies and vampires to time machines and extraterrestrials on the animated series Archie's Weird Mysteries.
