A perhaps necessary reminder in the wake of “The Shape of Water” that sea creatures, as a rule, should probably not be looked at as romantic partners, “Sweetheart” complicates — and elevates — a survival story by pitting a desperate young woman against a primordial beast determined to make her its dinner.
Director and co-writer J.D. Dillard (“Sleight”) delivers a smart, streamlined thriller that skillfully integrates a careful whisper of social commentary into a story that also unfolds masterfully as a straightforward genre workout.
Kiersey Clemons (“Hearts Beat Loud”) plays Jenn, a young coed who washes up on the beach of a tiny, idyllic island alongside another ailing passenger from the boat she, her boyfriend Lucas (Emory Cohen), and a group of college kids took out for vacation. While she’s exploring the island for food, supplies and other survivors, her companion dies, and she buries his body in the sand on...

After making waves at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the Blumhouse project “Sweetheart” is set to hit digital and on demand platforms.
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment will offer the film on all major streaming hubs and paid video on demand come Oct. 22, unleashing the creature feature which stars Kiersey Clemons in a harrowing tale of survival.
Up-and-comer Jd Dillard directs and co-writes on the project, which sees Clemons stranded on an idyllic remote island after her small boat sinks. As if basic survival wasn’t taxing enough on the young woman in the daylight, the island turns into a dangerous stalking ground at night when a mysterious predator steps out of the water in search of prey.
The film screens Thursday evening at Austin’s Fantastic Fest, where Dillard will be present. Jason Blum, Alex Theurer, Alex Hyner and Bill Karesh are executive producers on the project. The film co-stars Emory Cohen,...

2019 should be a considerable leap year for J.D. Dillard, as both his sophomore film Sweetheart and the project he co-wrote in Joe Sill’s Stray should drop. The Blumhouse-backed horror survival pic was placed in Dillard’s lap almost directly after his Sleight premiere. The only J.D. Dillard related news to drop in 2018 was that he co-wrote Joe Sill’s directorial debut project Stray. Another tight-lipped Blumhouse production that has been in the can since 2017, we’ve been without updates for more than a year. Dillard broke big with Sleight at Sundance in 2016 and production on his sophomore project took place way back in June of 2017. Sweetheart stars Kiersey Clemons, Emory Cohen and Hanna Mangan Lawrence.

Though, as the title alludes to, Red Dog: True Blue has a narrative that centres around a canine protagonist – the eponymous role is somewhat irrelevant. Blue, as he’s called, may be in every single scene, but he’s merely acting as our eyes, observing a coming-of-age tale play out in front of him, as we watch on as a teenager falls in love, learns how to cope with his mother’s illness, and navigates his way around these formative years in his life. The dog is but a mere voyeur, which, as a viewer, is all we ever are. Plus, he doesn’t say much.
Directed by Kriv Stenders, who helmed the preceding endeavour, titled just Red Dog, is back here presenting what is effectively a prequel, as our tale begins with Michael Carter (Jason Isaacs) recounting his experiences with this special animal to his son as a bedtime story.

For an episode that wasn't intended to be a series finale, the final episode of The CW's "limited event series" Containment was actually a very satisfying way to go out. Here's how we left everyone in the closing moments of the series: Our little group of refugees had gotten about halfway through the tunnels on their way to escape the cordon when the government started blowing said tunnels up. Teresa (Hanna Mangan Lawrence) and Xander (Demetrius Bridges) realized that it was smarter for them to head back, so they did. They got to Teresa's mom's store, only to find their worst fears realized: Teresa's mom was dead. But they decided to stay and build their family there—plus, Xander...

The folks at The CW are hoping there's room for one more with their Containment series. How will this one perform in the ratings? Cancelled or renewed for a second season? Stay tuned.
On Containment, a mysterious and lethal epidemic breaks out in Atlanta and a wide reaching urban quarantine is quickly enforced. To clarify, this article and the ones similar to it are not reviews of this fall/midseason’s pilots (because pilots can change a lot between now and when they broadcast). These are just my first impressions of the not-for-air network pilots that I have been able to screen. I last wrote about ABC’s Quantico. Next up: The CW’s Containment, which premieres at midseason. The Premise: An epidemic breaks out in Atlanta, leaving the large city quarantined and those stuck on the inside fighting for their lives. The Cast: David Gyasi (Interstellar) as Lex, Chris Wood (The Vampire Diaries) as Jake Riley, Christina Marie Moses (Twisted) as Jana, Kristen Gutoskie (Beaver Falls) as Katie Frank, Claudia Black (The Originals) as Dr. Sabine Lommers, and Hanna Mangan Lawrence (Spartacus) as Teresa First Impression: Julie Plec is quickly becoming the Shonda Rhimes of The CW, and that’s not a bad thing.

Stories of families caught in wartime conflict is one that has been explored in many forms of media, and the American Civil War is no different in that regard. Another entry into the group comes in the form of the Amazon pilot Point of Honor. Co-written by Carlton Cuse, the show focuses on the various members of the Rhodes family, owners of the Point of Honor plantation in Virginia, who free their slaves as the American Civil War breaks out, leading to divided loyalties and new challenges. The pilot succeeds in drawing distinct characters and putting the focus on the women and how the war affected them, creating a fascinating episode that holds a lot of promise for the potential series.

So far, Amazon has scored one big hit in the form of Jeffrey Tambor-led dramedy Transparent, and it hopes to find some more in the new lineup of pilots, which will be made available for viewing as part of the company’s first pilot season of 2015.
Enclosed are descriptions of all seven pilots, courtesy of Deadline. The talented involved on all of them is impressive, to say the least. Mad Dogs comes from Cris Cole (The Bill) and Shawn Ryan (The Shield), while The Man In The High Castle hails from Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files). We got a chance to chat with "Spartacus: Vengeance" creator Steven DeKnight about what has to be one of the most shocking season finales in TV history. There are serious spoilers coming, so if you haven't watched it yet, avert your eyes. DeKnight tells us about the deaths, incest and who was safe until the very last moment.
Half of the cast is off to Hades after the finale. It was a blood bath! "I think I've taken the Joss Whedon school of death and destruction to a new level," DeKnight laughs. "We really did kind of clean house. To me it's all part and parcel of what does the story need and where is the story going.
DeKnight talks about killing off Lucretia (Lucy Lawless). "When I was first approached to bring her back, I was adamant that she die with Batiatus (John Hannah) to wrap up that story line.

Spartacus: Vengeance 2.09 "Monsters" Review - Great Balls of Fire
-Starz
Spartacus: Vengeance continues its bloody fight in the aftermath of Spartacus: Blood and Sand, igniting its ninth and penultimate episode "Monsters," as Spartacus struggles to unite his men for their cause, while a broken Ilithyia (Viva Bianca) returns to find her place against her maddening husband Glaber. An incredibly strong, if somewhat uneven episode, "Monsters" climactic end will have viewers howling at their televisions for the final installment next week.
Wow, man. Just wow. I’m terribly afraid of losing my eloquence when I talk about “Monsters,” as I’m still coming down from something of a high over it, but I wanted to capture the sheer excitement the latest episode of Spartacus: Vengeance imparts. We all thought after “Libertus” that the climactic battle that brought down the stadium simply couldn’t be topped in terms of sheer scope, but...

Stars: Liam McIntyre, Peter Mensah, Manu Bennett, Viva Bianca, Craig Parker, Katrina Law, Hanna Mangan-Lawrence, Lucy Lawless, Dan Feuerriegel, Nick Tarabay, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Dustin Clare | Written by Jed Whedon | Directed by Chris Martin-Jones
“Spartacus is a historical portrayal of ancient Roman society that contains graphic violence and adult content. Viewer discretion is advised.”
So we’re 8 episodes deep into this 10 episode season and the Capua Four are finally back together again. Liam McIntyre has successfully cemented his place as a more thoughtful and calmer Spartacus, and Cynthia Addai-Robinson looks comfortable portraying a damaged, but stronger Naevia.
Speaking of damage, I love how the characters are gaining more scars each battle, that attention to detail is just one reason Spartacus is such a good show. Continuity! (See my rant in last week’s review).
