Even the most die-hard Beatles fans may not know the name of Andy White, who died Monday after a stroke at the age of 85, but they've certainly heard his drumming. As a regular session musician for Emi in 1962, the Scottish-born White was hired by George Martin to replace Ringo Starr during the recording of the Fab Four's first single, "Love Me Do," as well as its B-side, "P.S. I Love You." As Ian MacDonald puts in his exhaustive history of the Beatles' records, the switch to White was emblematic of a musical conservatism the group would soon overthrow: In an earlier effort on the track, "Starr had failed to 'lock-in' his bass-drum with the bass guitar ... a convention of the polite studio style of the early Sixties." (According to other observers, Starr had also been rushing the pre-chorus, which adds to the song's legend as a Scylla...

OutEast Entertainment is reportedly set to produce "Thank You Ashley Madison," a scripted TV series about the adultery-themed hookup site that has been all over the news headlines over the past week.
Steven Marrs and Courtney Hazlett are set to produce while "Justified" scribe Jennifer Kennedy along with Ian MacDonald are set to co-write the project which Hazlett says will likely explore the site's recent hack in some form.
The series won't be a direct biopic about the site's real founder Noel Biderman, rather it will fictionalize it and focus it on a good mother who launches the business to help support her family.
AshleyMadison.com has made news in the past week as hackers got into the system and publicly revealed a list of the e-mails of all thirty million members who access the site from around the globe. Statistics indicate that in major metropolitan cities like Sydney, as...

Ian Macdonald's Luna: New Moon is being adapted into a TV series by NCIS showrunner Shane Brennan, for CBS...
Here's a tip for anyone who wants to stay on the bleeding edge of the latest sci-fi publications: the TV adaptation rights to forthcoming sci-fi novel Luna: New Moon by Ian Macdonald (Desolation Road, The Dervish House, The Everness Series) have already been snapped up by CBS.
Luna, due to be published this September, is planned to be the first in a series set one hundred years from now on the colonised moon. It tells the story of five warring families, the leaders of the feudal lunar society, battling for ultimate control of the territory. Think Game Of Thrones in space, perhaps? According to the novel's blurb, you'd be better off making comparisons between Northern Irish writer Macdonald and the likes of Kim Stanley Robinson and Ken Macleod.

I first gazed upon Sideshow Collectibles' Court of the Dead series in person at the 2014 San Diego Comic-Con, and while they’ve released a number of original pieces over the years, this is their first major push in creating an original, dark fantasy world, one filled with unique characters.
Court of the Dead is spearheaded by Tom Gilliland, Sideshow's Creative Director, who gave us a personal tour of their Comic-Con booth last year, as well as an in-depth look at the new line. Seeing all of the Court of the Dead figures together and learning about Sideshow’s creative process was a fascinating experience. That being said, getting the chance to personally unbox, assemble, and photograph the Queen of the Dead Premium Format Figure, courtesy of Sideshow Collectibles, was nothing short of incredible, as she's sure to make a perfect addition to anyone's collection.

"Glee" actor Cory Monteith died of mixed drug toxicity involving heroin and alcohol. He was 31. "Toxicology results did not indicate any presence of the drug fentanyl," the coroner's office said in a statement Wednesday. Fentanyl is an opioid narcotic with similar behavior as morphine and, according to a reports in Canada, experts speculated there may have been a link between it and an uptick in heroin overdoses reported in Abbotsford, British Columbia. "Our frontline officers have spoke with many individuals who have reported being concerned about the potency of heroin that is currently being bought, sold and used," Constable Ian MacDonald told CBC News this morning. "A possible explanation for the increased potency and the overdose may be...

From L. Ian MacDonald's TV & Radio syndicated newspaper column on February 5, 1974:
Here's bad news for soap opera buffs: CBS has canceled The Secret Storm after a run of 20 years. From next Monday, its place in the network's daytime schedule will be filled by a game show called Tattletales. The cancellation can be taken as a signal for the changing daytime order, not unlike CBS's decision three years ago to sweep out Ed Sullivan and its rural situation comedies. The coming daytime trend is more and more low-budget, 90-minute drama and variety specials, which ABC has already gone in for in a big and apparently successful way.

The Earth Institute's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory reveals how many millions of barrels of oil were released into the Gulf of Mexico.
Researchers at Columbia University today revealed the results of the first peer-reviewed study of the quantities of oil released from the Bp oil spill disaster. Until now, the government has only hinted at these figures, but never fully disclosed them.
The Earth Institute is now resolutely referring to the Bp oil spill as "the largest marine oil accident ever." The authors, Timothy J. Crone and Maya Tolstoy of the Earth institute's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University, used a new technique involving high resolution underwater video cameras. They found that 56,000 to 68,000 barrels of oil were being released per day between April and July, a total equaling 4.4 million barrels of oil.
The government's official tally started at 12,000 to 19,000 barrels a day. Then in June, that number was revised upward to between 35,000 to 60,000 barrels per day.

I don't want to be a bore, but we could really simplify these royal scandals, where a lady of the outer circle promises a fake Mr Moneypants some top-notch Windsor face-time for a fiver and a packet of limited-edition Quavers. The palace should issue some figures on how often a sheikh, or a tycoon, or a Texan, has approached a royal with an offer of money for access, and actually meant it. If it's all the time – if this was the fifth time in a week Fergie (pictured) had been offered £27,000 in used notes, then fine, fair enough, she got caught in a sting and it could happen to anyone.
But I suspect it's never. I suspect Fergie is never approached by "businessmen". I suspect sheikhs never call meetings with Sophie Windsor, or...

What makes a great critic? As we launch our third Young Critics' Competition, Guardian reviewers offer some expert advice – and reveal the writers who first inspired them
'A critic is more than a spectator' Michael Billington, theatre critic
I started reading reviews avidly in my teens. I'm still haunted by a phrase Harold Hobson used about Waiting for Godot in the Sunday Times: "If you have only 15 shillings left in the world, go and see Waiting for Godot. If you have 30 shillings, see it twice."
But the critic who really obsessed me, and most of my generation, was Hobson's great rival, Kenneth Tynan at the Observer. What Tynan showed is that criticism is principally about writing well. Open his collected reviews on any page and you find the phrases lock perfectly into place. Here's one example, from a 1956 review of Graham Greene's The Power and the Glory: "Puffing on a cheroot,...
