In the pre-coverage of Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, the speech is being billed as the most important of his presidency, what with his dismal approval numbers and what is shaping up to be very difficult campaign for reelection.
Moreover, so much attention has been paid to the president’s age — at 81, he is the first octogenarian on a major party ticket — that any kind of slip up will be seized upon by his rivals.
Then again, Biden’s most memorable moment last year was an exchange with House Republicans over Social Security, showing that the president had command of the stage. That’s why it’ll be interesting to see if GOP members restrain themselves so as to not give the president the opportunity this year.

Nicolle Wallace said that she would be returning to anchor MSNBC’s Deadline: White House on Monday.
Wallace has been on maternity leave, as she and her husband Michael Schmidt welcomed a daughter via surrogate.
Alicia Menendez has been filling in for Wallace.
On the show on Friday, Wallace told Menendez that she also will be launching a new series on her show called “American Autocracy.” She said that “it is something the whole country should be grappling with, because that is certainly the head of the Republican party is running on this time.”
Wallace has anchored Deadline: White House since 2017. The show expanded into to two hours in 2020, and has been among the network’s top-rated programs.
Before becoming an on-air political analyst, Wallace was in the George W. Bush administration and worked on John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign. She is a former co-host of The View.

In a new court filing, federal prosecutors made new allegations against Sen. Robert Menendez (D-New Jersey) and his wife, Nadine Menendez, that accused them of fabricating a “false cover story” regarding the origin of gold bars believed to be the result of bribes from foreign agents.
According to court documents, Nadine informed a jeweler that the gold bars were inherited from her late mother. A Menendez staffer reported that the senator himself attempted to assert the same claim, and insisted that the gold originated from Nadine’s deceased mother. However, these explanations appear fake, as the gold bars were clearly stamped with the name “Menendez.”
Furthermore, prosecutors revealed that four of the gold bars shared serial numbers with those purportedly owned by Fred Daibes, a New Jersey real estate tycoon and one of the senator’s alleged bribers.
The recent court filing also sheds light on additional details of Menendez’s alleged bribery scheme.

MSNBC revealed “breaking news” regarding the newest indictment of Sen. Bob Menendez (D-New Jersey). Unfortunately, this happened while his daughter and MSNBC anchor, Alicia Menendez, was hosting the MSNBC show Deadline: White House.
Alicia announced this “breaking news” during the last five minutes of Deadline: White House‘s Tuesday edition. She was filling in for the show’s host, Nicole Wallace.
The senator was indicted in September 2023 on charges of bribery, and he pleaded not guilty.
Federal government officials stated that he and his wife, Nadine Arslanian, took bribes in the form of cash, gold bars and a convertible. Prosecutors accused the senator of relying on his position as chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to further the Egyptian government’s interests.
The Department of Justice also claimed that the senator was given luxury wristwatches and Formula One tickets, which he got in exchange for having promoted the Qatari government.

On Jan. 13, MSNBC will roll out its new take on a weekend morning show: The Weekend.
Co-hosted by Symone Sanders-Townsend, Alicia Menendez, and Michael Steele, the program was announced late last year as part of an overhaul of the cable channel’s weekend lineup. Originating from Washington D.C. and running from 8-10 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, MSNBC is betting that The Weekend can deliver for its regular viewers what Morning Joe does on weekday mornings: A more casual, conversational look at the news, with some original reporting and interviews thrown in for good measure.
The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Menendez, Steele and Symone-Townsend last week to discuss what they have planned.
To start, I’d love hear each of your thoughts on what your goals are with the show and the perspective that you hope to bring to the weekend morning time period and and also...

MSNBC is giving its weekend lineup a major overhaul, which will include the end of Sunday-night program The Mehdi Hasan Show, TVLine has confirmed.
Hasan’s series, which initially launched on Peacock in 2020 and later joined the MSNBC lineup in February 2021, found Hasan providing analysis and interviews that reflected on the day’s events. MSNBC is overhauling its weekend lineup ahead of the 2024 election season.
The biggest change is a new morning panel show, called The Weekend, which will be hosted by Symone Sanders-Townsend, Alicia Menendez and Michael Steele. The program will run from 8-10 a.m. and originate from Washington D.C., with Kyle Griffin as executive producer.
Sanders-Townsend and Menendez currently host weekend afternoon hours on MSNBC, but will shift to focus on the morning show.
“As we emerge from a multitude of historic events these past months, we have an opportunity to build on our accomplishments and keep the momentum going into 2024 and beyond,” MSNBC president Rashida Jones wrote to staff at the channel Thursday morning, outlining the plans.
The new schedule will also bring a wave of adjustments to the lineups on both Saturday and Sunday.
Two current MSNBC weekend hosts will be losing their hours: Mehdi Hasan, who will give up his 8 p.

MSNBC is shaking up its weekend schedule as CNN’s Saturday and Sunday offerings continue to provide strong competition.
The NBCUniversal cable-news outlet plans to a launch a new panel show, “The Weekend,” co-moderated by Alicia Menendez, Symone Sanders-Townsend and Michael Steele that will air Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., and will cancel a nighttime show anchored by the outspoke Mehdi Hasan. Those move will not only consolidate anchors who had been active on the weekend schedule in their own time slots, but leave room for broad change.
MSNBC’s weekend schedule has long been edged out by CNN among viewers between 25 and 54 — the audience most coveted by advertisers in news programming. CNN launched a new Saturday-morning lineup in November featuring Victor Blackwell,. Chris Wallace and Christiane Amanpour, and paced ahead of MSNBC in both that demographic and total viewers, according to recent data from Nielsen.

Broadcast networks broke into regular programming to cover the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe V. Wade, while cable networks have been virtually non-stop in providing reaction.
That will continue this evening. Rachel Maddow will host her MSNBC show, breaking from her regular schedule. Norah O’Donnell will anchor CBS Evening News from the Supreme Court. At 8 Pm, PBS will feature The End of Roe: A PBS NewsHour Special Report, with Judy Woodruff looking at the legal and cultural impact. Washington Week, hosted by Yamiche Alcindor, will focus entirely on the Roe decision and feature the Politico reporter who broke the leaked draft opinion.
That leaked opinion gave networks extra time to prepare for a momentous ruling. MSNBC, which ran commercial free for four hours after the decision, had reporters in Jackson, Ms and St. Louis, Mo, capturing the scene outside abortion clinics in two states that have so-called “trigger laws,...

After Rachel Maddow signed a new multi-year deal with MSNBC and NBCUniversal, there were reports that she ultimately will scale back her schedule to as little as once-a-week. That would leave the network with the potential loss of the nightly show, with no obvious successor.
In an interview with Deadline after Maddow’s deal was signed, MSNBC president Rashida Jones was asked whether, with the new agreement, Maddow will continue to host her show five nights a week. “Her show will continue as she’s doing it now,” she said. “One of the things we are looking at is she is so interested and excited in doing things in so many different areas within NBCUniversal, so we are figuring out how to juggle all of that, but her show continues on.” As for the longer term, Jones suggests that details are still being worked out.

Ballerina, author and philanthropist Misty Copeland’s purpose is to give back to “those who came before [her]” and set a good example for the future generations.
The first Black principal dancer at the American Ballet Theater explained this during a virtual Paley Center for Media panel entitled “PaleyImpact: Choosing to Challenge: How Women are Leading the Way,” presented by Verizon on Monday. In celebration of International Women’s Day, the conversation focused on how media impacts women, including issues of gender parity and structural sexism, such as the motherhood penalty, and ageism.
“Women are the only gender who’s hit with … ‘Oh, she’s too ambitious,’ when men do that all the time,” said U.S. Rep. Val Demings. “We have to get over what people say about us or feel about us or whether they like us or not. We really have to focus on ourselves and our God-given talent to influence.

Voters expected the nation’s big TV-news outlets to go late into the night on Election Day. But they may not have anticipated any of them starting up very early Sunday, several days ahead of the big event.
CNN anchor Kate Bolduan normally holds forth late mornings on the cable-news outlet, when many of her viewers are in the middle of their day. On Sunday morning, she started discussing the latest headlines at 3 a.m. – when even the most die-hard Saturday-night reveler has probably nodded off for the evening. ABC News prepared a “bonus” episode this morning of its “Start Here” podcast, during which James Goldston, the unit’s president, tried to set viewer expectations for November 3, noting that audiences may not see as much of what has been a hallmark of Election Night — calling state races as early as possible, hopefully in advance of rivals. MSNBC is reworking its Saturday and Sunday schedules, giving Ali Velshi a morning program and adding Alicia Menendez to the roster.
The NBCUniversal-owned cable-news outlet will pluck Velshi from its weekday schedule, and give him a morning program that stretches from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The move opens up the weekday 3 p.m. hour and breaks up the on-air team that leads “Velshi & Ruhle” at 1 p.m. David Gura, who currently anchors “Up” on Sunday mornings, will instead anchor “MSNBC Live” from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays. The new schedule is slated to launch in 2020.
“Going into 2020, there won’t be any slow news days. Our investment in weekends continues to be a priority for us,” says Phil Griffin, president of MSNBC.
The news outlet has for the past few years worked to build its weekend lineup as the national news cycle has grown more intense.

In the midst of a political and cultural climate that Christine Amanpour calls “an unprecedented state of affairs” and “a moment of extreme existential crisis and threat,” the CNN host will begin Amanpour & Company, set to launch on PBS September 10, with journalists Walter Isaacson, Michel Martin, Alicia Menendez and Hari Sreenivasan as co-contributors.
Announced as PBS’s replacement for Charlie Rose back in May after Rose was accused of sexual harassment, Amanpour said putting a woman in this role made a very important statement. “Now is a really watershed moment,” she told Deadline following her TCA panel discussion, “and so I think it’s really great that a woman takes this role at this particular time.” Asked if she’d heard of Rose’s reported attempts at a comeback, Amanpour said, “I don’t know anything about it to be honest, because I live in London so I’m not on top of everything.
