[This story contains spoilers from the April 17 episode of Abbott Elementary, “2 Ava 2 Fest.”]
Ava Fest returned to Abbott Elementary for a second year in a row during Wednesday night’s “2 Ava 2 Fest” episode. But, unlike the first festival in season two of the ABC sitcom — where the wildly unqualified principal of Willard R. Abbott school pretended the name of the petition-signing effort stood for “A Very Abbott Festival” — this time around, she wastes no time professing her true intentions.
“Of course it’s about Ava, what do you mean?” actress Janelle James, who portrays Ava in the Quinta Brunson comedy, asks facetiously. “She just wants to have a party, charge at the door, take half. What’s the big deal?”
The big deal in the episode turns out to be Ava’s promise that Questlove will perform at the festival, which none of the teachers believe after she failed to book R&b singer Jazmine Sullivan the year prior. But...

Class will stay in session at Abbott Elementary.
Mere days after returning with its strikes-delayed and supersized third season, the Quinta Brunson comedy has been renewed for a fourth season at ABC. The news was announced by co-star William Stanford Davis (aka Mr. Johnson) on Saturday at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour, where he was a surprise guest during ABC’s time before the press corps.
Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich also announced renewals for Celebrity Family Feud and Jeopardy Masters, as sources say Dancing With the Stars will also return for its 33rd season.
Season three returned Wednesday with ratings that were on par with its sophomore debut (2.8 million total viewers and a 0.5 in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic for its first part and 2.7 million and a 0.5 for the latter). The comedy, which earned Brunson an Emmy, is a co-production between Disney’s 20th Television and Warner Bros. Television,...

The effort to boost diversity in American films and TV series came to the fore at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival on Friday as Hollywood execs talked about pushing projects from underrepresented creators in front of major studios and streamers.
Sara Rastogi, executive vp of production and development at Issa Rae’s Hoorae Media banner, said getting the right resources, financial and creative, into projects by new and diverse creators is key to success in changing Hollywood.
“We’re passionate in bringing those resources to projects of color. A lot of time, it’s, ‘Oh, we’ll do something for this number.’ But that’s short changing what the project might really need. Top of mind is how do we support the creative, giving them resources so their project can be a success,” Rastogi said during the panel on feature film development at TIFF.
Reshaping Hollywood with new movie voices is also part of the puzzle.

Finding actors for Abbott Elementary‘s coterie of impressive guest stars was no easy task for casting director Wendy O’Brien, who juggled A-list schedules, Covid-19 restrictions and child labor laws to help bring season two of the ABC sitcom to life.
After the massive critical and commercial success of season one, securing interested talent was not the problem: “Part of the joy of season two was that Abbott had already exploded,” O’Brien explains. “We were having agents and actors reaching out to us saying they were fans of the show, if there was ever anything that they could be right for.”
Creator Quinta Brunson had one actor in mind to play her character Janine’s mother, Vanetta: “Taraji [P. Henson] was a dream of Quinta’s,” O’Brien says. “But she’s extraordinarily busy. It’s not easy to nail down her schedule. When we were reaching out to her reps to gauge interest,...

While Quinta Brunson already receives a lot of credit for the success of “Abbott Elementary,” having become the second Black woman to ever win the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series last year, not enough esteem is given to her acting performance as protagonist Janine Teagues.
Such is the case with the majority of women who star in the television comedies they have created. Though the last couple decades have seen more and more shows with more and more women wearing more and more hats, since 2000 only Tina Fey (“30 Rock”) and Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”) have won the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy for a role they wrote themselves. While on the men’s side of things, half of the last 10 Emmys for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series were given to someone who functions as both creator and star of their show.

On day one, we all felt it. We all felt something really special here,” says Abbott Elementary executive producer and director Randall Einhorn of the ABC sitcom. In its first year, the freshman series won two Emmys for creator-showrunner Quinta Brunson and supporting actress Sheryl Lee Ralph (respectively, they were the second Black women to win in their categories: best writing for a comedy and best supporting actress in a comedy). The second season has earned the show five more Emmy noms, for best comedy series, actress (Brunson), supporting actress (Janelle James and Ralph) and guest actress (Taraji P. Henson).

Update: As THR exclusively previewed on Monday (see below), publicists from Hollywood’s PR firms met with SAG-AFTRA representatives via Zoom on Tuesday afternoon to discuss the ongoing strike and its devastating impact on the PR community.
Publicists who spoke afterward with THR described the meeting as “disturbing,” “shitty” and “pretty horrific,” noting that SAG-AFTRA listened to their questions and concerns but ultimately made no accommodations to mitigate the damage that the strike’s terms are having on publicists. Said one publicist, “They addressed it by basically saying, ‘Sorry you are all losing your jobs, but it is for the good of the actors and our mission,'” and faulting the AMPTP for refusing to come back to the negotiating table.
SAG-AFTRA reiterated to the publicists that they cannot pitch or engage with press on behalf of clients who are members of SAG-AFTRA without repercussions for the clients.

Quinta Brunson is bringing some April Fools’ Day energy to Saturday Night Live ahead of her hosting debut.
The Abbott Elementary creator and star is set to lead the NBC sketch comedy series April 1, marking its first new episode since Jenna Ortega hosted the show March 11. Brunson will be joined by musical guest Lil Yachty, who is similarly making his SNL debut.
In a video released Wednesday, featured player Molly Kearney talks to the camera, in a style similar to that employed by ABC’s Abbott Elementary, and explains that Brunson has been caught up in the April Fools’ Day spirit. As the footage shows, Brunson keeps hiding throughout the studio to surprise the performer with unexpected gifts.
“I’m not sure Quinta understands the concept of a prank,” Kearney quips. This leads Brunson to reevaluate her plan to pull a prank involving the purchase of a brand-new car.

Continuing her bid for world domination, Quinta Brunson is set to make her "Saturday Night Live" debut on April 1. The news was announced during this week's episode, hosted by Scream Queen Jenna Ortega. For Brunson's episode, the musical guest will be rapper and singer Lil Yachty, hot off the release of his critically acclaimed new album, "Let's Start Here."

Speaking of critical acclaim, "Abbott Elementary" remains exceedingly popular in its sophomore season, still universally beloved and revered. Going from a (fake) classroom to a live studio is quite the transition, but Brunson also has a strong past in sketch comedy thanks to prior credits on "A Black Lady Sketch Show" and her time as a content creator for BuzzFeed. Also, as "Abbott" proves on a weekly basis, her charm is off the charts and hilarity is clearly second nature.

Let’s go, Ms. Teagues! Abbott Elementary’s Quinta Brunson will host Saturday Night Live on April 1, marking her hosting debut on the venerated NBC show. SNL announced the news on Twitter, adding that Lil Yachty will be that episode’s musical guest in the Grammy-nominated rapper’s own SNL debut. Brunson, of course, is no stranger to comedy, as the creator and star of Abbott Elementary, a hit sitcom for ABC. But she’s also no stranger to sketch comedy: Before Abbott, Brunson starred in the first season of HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show. Her other TV credits include roles in Miracle Workers, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, Party Down, and History of the World: Part II. You can argue that Hasan Minhaj is a master at working a crowd — the two-time Peabody Award winner hosted the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in 2017, helmed the weekly show Patriot Act from 2018 to 2020 and toured his one-man show Homecoming King nationwide before filming it as a Netflix special. But this March, he is looking to unlock new hosting skills as he emcees the Film Independent Spirit Awards for the first time. This year’s event recognizes a characteristically wide breadth of nominees: Awards-season staples are joined by smaller films that missed deserved nods from other awards bodies, like Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul and Bodies Bodies Bodies.
Ahead of the gig, THR caught up with Minhaj to discuss the nominees, what he intends to bring to the stage and the other projects he has coming up.
Was hosting the Spirit Awards an immediate “yes” for you?

‘Abbott Elementary’ Showrunners Look to Season 3 and Tease More of Janine and Gregory’s Romantic Arc
TV enthusiasts already know that “Abbott Elementary,” ABC’s mockumentary-style half-hour comedy from Quinta Brunson, is best in class. But there’s more to the Emmy-winning sitcom than meets the eye as it delves deeper into its setting within a Philadelphia public school system. In Season 2, “Abbott” has touched on topics from the issue of charter schools to a city-specific mural arts program (explored in Wednesday’s episode), and showrunners Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker previewed that there’s more to come as the series heads into its junior installment.
“We’re going into Season 3 with some ideas of an aspect — that I won’t spoil — of the school system that we want to explore a little bit more,” executive producer Schumacker told TheWrap. He added, laughing, “I think we’re approaching it like ‘The Wire’ — different facets of this ecosystem.”

“Abbott Elementary” is on a roll. After picking up three trophies at the Golden Globes on Tuesday — including best TV comedy — the series has officially been renewed for its third season at ABC. The news was announced by Craig Erwich, president of ABC Entertainment, Hulu and Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals, at the Television Critics Association’s Winter 2023 press tour on Wednesday.
Created by and starring Quinta Brunson, “Abbott Elementary” takes place in a Philadelphia public school and focuses on a group of educators — with different levels of experience and optimism, but all with the determination to help their students. Brunson plays eager but naive second grade teacher Janine Teagues, and the cast also includes Sheryl Lee Ralph as Barbara Howard, Tyler James Williams as Gregory Eddie, Lisa Ann Walter as Melissa Schemmenti, Janelle James as Ava Coleman, Chris Perfetti as Jacob Hill and William Stanford Davis as Mr. Johnson.

“Abbott Elementary” got an A+ from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association at Tuesday’s Golden Globe Awards, taking home three out of the five Globes awarded to programming airing across Disney-owned platforms ABC, Hulu and FX. Along with “Abbott’s” wins for best TV comedy, and acting victories for creator and lead Quinta Brunson and supporting star Tyler James Williams, the Disney family picked up two more awards via “The Dropout” star Amanda Seyfried’s Globe for best actress TV limited or anthology series and Jeremy Allen White’s win for leading FX comedy “The Bear.”
With five wins, Disney General Entertainment topped all distributors, including HBO with four wins, at the 2023 Globes. “Abbott’s” win also marks the first time a broadcast comedy has won the comedy series Globe since “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” at the 2013 ceremony, and the first time ABC has won the award since “Modern Family” for the 2011 Globes.

School is back in session at “Abbott Elementary,” this time with high-profile guest stars such Leslie Odom Jr. and … Gritty, the famous mascot of the Philadelphia Flyers.
The fuzzy orange hockey supporter plays himself in the Season 2 premiere, titled “Development Day.” Janine, the second grade teacher played by series creator and recent Emmy winner Quinta Brunson, invites Gritty to Abbott Elementary to surprise the students on their first day of school, though things inevitably go wrong.
“Gritty, to me, is such a beautiful representation of Philadelphia,” Brunson says in a behind-the-scenes video Variety can exclusively unveil. “The way he is joyful, the way he looks, the way he feels, the way he is.” Adds Sheryl Lee Ralph, who also just won an Emmy for her “Abbott Elementary” work: “There are a lot of people who might be iconic in Philadelphia. Grab your remotes and get ready for more gut-busting laughs because "Abbott Elementary" is back for another epic season. The witty, record-breaking, and now Emmy-winning mockumentary sitcom returns on Sept. 21, and, of course, there's no doubt that it'll deliver yet another award-worthy season.
Fresh off their months-long press run, the "Abbott Elementary" cast - Quinta Brunson, Tyler James Williams, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Janelle James, Lisa Ann Walter, Chris Perfetti, and William Stanford Davis - have been working nonstop to finish filming season two, so much so that the stars tell Popsugar they've hardly had a moment to revel in their unprecedented success, which Williams says is on account of still being "stuck in the incubation chamber that is 'Abbott' season one."
"You know what's weird, someone just asked me that yesterday . . . and it was the first time I actually had to grapple with that, 'What has changed?'" he shares.

It’s Tuesday morning, less than 24 hours after she’s won an Emmy, and Quinta Brunson’s voice is hoarse. The days of pre-award festivities leading up to the Sept. 12 ceremony were frantic, starting with Variety’s Showrunners Dinner. Then came the Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony in downtown Los Angeles, the Governors Gala and Disney’s post-Emmy celebration, which spilled into the next day. Something had to give.
Yet when the “Abbott Elementary” creator and star sits down for an in-depth interview with Variety, her creative voice is clear and strong.
On the morning after the Emmys, she’s back on Warner Bros.’ Burbank lot, about to take part in a table read and start production on a new episode of the hit ABC comedy. Before the grind resumes, however, Brunson stops by the studio commissary’s executive dining room for breakfast and a quick conversation about the Wbtv comedy...

Jimmy Kimmel is clearing the air with Quinta Brunson. After the late-night host made headlines earlier this week for literally getting in the middle of the star's 2022 Emmys win, the two sat down together to address the incident. "Congratulations on your Emmy," he told Quinta on the Sept. 14 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!. "I missed it. How did it go?" If you also missed it, here's what happened: Jimmy presented the award for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series with Will Arnett at the Sept. 12 award show. The presentation came after Jimmy Kimmel Live! lost to Last Week Tonight With John Oliver in the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category. And as...

"I was absolutely confused," Sheryl told reporters during ABC's TCA Day Sept. 14, per Deadline. "I didn't know what was going on. I wish that man would just get up off the ground." Sheryl, who also took home her first Emmy for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, said she later realized it was Jimmy lying on the ground as Quinta, 32, accepted her award. Sheryl Lee Ralph finds a lot less humour in Jimmy Kimmel’s Emmys skit than her fellow “Abbott Elementary” castmates do.
Quinta Brunson received her first Emmy recently for best writing for a comedy series. Will Arnett dragged a motionless Kimmel onstage before announcing Brunson as the winner. Kimmel, who did not speak but gave a brief thumbs up, remained lifeless while Brunson accepted her award.

After over four decades in the industry, Sheryl Lee Ralph finally got her well-deserved flowers Monday night with her first-ever Emmy win. The "Abbott Elementary" star is the 2022 outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series winner for her role as no-nonsense veteran teacher Barbara Howard in Quinta Brunson's critically acclaimed, record-breaking ABC sitcom - an overdue feat that makes Ralph only the second Black woman in Emmys history to secure the category title (Jackée Harry was the first in 1987).
Ralph made her victory an even more show-stopping moment through her emotional acceptance speech on Sept. 12, tearfully singing "Endangered Species" by Dianne Reeves - a powerful anthem she said she's been turning to for years. "I am an endangered species," she belted out loudly and proudly to the audience. "But I sing no victim's song. I am a woman, I am an artist. And I know where my voice belongs." Indeed,...

Towards the end of the night, Quinta took home the Emmy for Outstanding Writing For a Comedy Series for her show Abbott Elementary — the series in which she created, writes, and currently stars.
Although the Emmys are typically known to include multiple comedic bits, some felt Jimmy took his to a new level.
Presenter Will Arnett dragged Jimmy out (by his feet) behind him before announcing the winner of the category, and as Quinta took the stage and gave her acceptance speech, Kimmel remained “passed out” on the floor directly behind her.

Yellowjackets actor Samantha Hanratty looked gorgeous this weekend as she wowed at the Emmy Awards in a plunging braless minidress.
The 26-year-old actress was at the Television Academy’s 74th Emmy Awards because Yellowjackets has been nominated for the Outstanding Drama Series award, and she’s been having a great time too.
Samantha looked absolutely stunning as she hit the red carpet in a gorgeous sparkly minidress.
The silver dress featured a massively plunging neckline, meaning the actress bared quite a bit of skin on her chest. The skirt part was short and pleated.
Samantha allowed her long brown hair to cascade over the back of one shoulder and the front of the other.
She didn’t have many accessories on show, but she was wearing earrings and two rings that matched the white decorative buttons on her minidress.

One of the more awkward moments that took place during the 2022 Primetime Emmy Awards was when Quinta Brunson won her well-deserved Best Comedy Writing trophy for penning the pilot of ABC’s “Abbott Elementary.” She was forced to give her acceptance speech while standing next to a “passed out” Jimmy Kimmel who, as explained by co-presenter Will Arnett, got hammered at the bar after losing yet another Emmy.
Backstage in the press room, the writer/actor/producer joked to reporters that she “might punch [Kimmel] in the face” for ruining her Emmy moment. While celebrity slaps definitely go viral, we have an even better idea for Brunson that doesn’t involve physical touching — remember, we’re still in a worldwide pandemic!
Since Brunson will actually be a guest on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” this Wednesday, she should get the ultimate revenge by lying down on the floor next to him throughout his entire monologue.

Quinta Brunson is focused on celebrating her historic win. During the 2022 Emmys on Sept. 12, the Abbott Elementary creator became the second Black woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series for the ABC pilot. But before Quinta accepted her trophy onstage, comedians Will Arnett and Jimmy Kimmel introduced the category with a bit that involved the latter lying lifelessly on the stage. It was a bit that Jimmy remained committed to, even throughout Quinta's acceptance speech—which sparked backlash on social media. Jimmy Kimmel is facing heavy criticism online after gatecrashing Quinta Brunson’s Emmys acceptance speech.
Brunson won an Emmy Award for her writing on the comedy series Abbott Elementary.
She was introduced by actor Will Arnett, who dragged Kimmel onstage as part of a bit – the host pretended to have passed out after drinking too many skinny margaritas upon losing in his own category.
However, instead of getting off the stage to let Brunson have her moment, Kimmel remained sprawled out on stage while she gave her speech.
Brunson tried to move the talk show host, shaking him and saying, “Jimmy, wake up, I won,” but he remained where he was, leading many to accuse him of stealing the winner’s spotlight.
“Jimmy Kimmel should have left the stage during Quinta’s speech. Highly disrespectful,” journalist Philip Lewis wrote on Twitter.

Not everyone was laughing as Jimmy Kimmel stayed committed to his 2022 Emmys bit during Quinta Brunson’s acceptance speech.
As presenters of best writing in a comedy series, Will Arnett dragged a seemingly passed-out Kimmel onto the stage, with Arnett quipping to the crowd that this is the “13th time in a row that he’s lost and he just got into the skinny margaritas back there.” When Brunson took the stage to accept the prize for her ABC series Abbott Elementary, which was her first-ever Emmy, Kimmel remained onstage.
Arnett tried to push Kimmel out of the way to make room for the winner, with Brunson telling him, “Jimmy, wake up. I won.” Kimmel gave her a thumbs-up but continued to lie down on the stage throughout the speech, and it wasn’t until after Brunson was done that Arnett dragged him back off.

Jimmy Kimmel was denounced as a “disrespectful man” for attempting to upstage Quinta Brunson during her historic Emmy win for “Abbott Elementary,” which saw her become only the second Black woman to win the Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series category behind Lena Waithe (“Master of None”).

Kimmel’s move didn’t sit well with many Twitter users, whose opinions on the matter ranged from annoyance to anger at the host for taking away from a special moment for the “Abbott Elementary” creator. “Not really feeling Jimmy Kimmel staying on the ground while Quinta is accepting her award. Quinta Brunson's Emmy win came with a side of history. The Abbott Elementary creator's victory for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series made her just the third Black writer and the second Black female writer to win the award. Previously, Larry Wilmore won the category in 2002 for The Bernie Mac Show and Lena Waithe took home the Emmy for Master of None in 2017, an award she shared with Aziz Ansari. During her acceptance speech, Quinta gave a shout-out to Larry, saying, "I do want to thank Larry Wilmore for teaching me to write television as well as he did." Quinta also used the opportunity to give major thanks to her family and co-workers. "I have to thank my...

Abbott Elementary hit very close to home for Quinta Brunson. The creator and star of the ABC comedy, which is nominated for seven awards at the 2022 Emmys, explained why the show's subject matter is so important to her on the Microsoft Theater red carpet. "My mom was a teacher," Quinta told Live From E! co-host Loni Love on the red carpet Sept. 12. "I was so close to it all my life. I was in my mom's class. Schools like Abbott, with Black children and Black teachers who care about them, they're very special places. Places of community and safety and morals and intense humor." Abbott Elementary is nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series for its breakout first season, while...

School is officially in session—and we're more than ready to learn. For the 2022 Emmys on Sept. 12, Abbott Elementary creator Quinta Brunson showed up and outshined in more ways than one. The actress—who made history as the first Black woman to earn three Emmy nods in one year—dazzled on the red carpet when she wore a shimmering chocolate dress with high slit by Dolce and Gabbana. Streaming may have partly usurped the splashy Emmy-nominated dramas that once populated broadcast television, but one arena the new entertainment medium still has trouble competing with (“Hacks” aside) in is sitcoms. The Big Four networks still produce the bulk of the most successful half-hour comedies in the business and arguably the brightest new addition to the sitcom realm last TV season was ABC’s “Abbott Elementary.” Ahead of the Season 2 premiere September 21, and as part of TheWrap’s Fall TV Preview, writers and executive producers Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker spoke us about what has and hasn’t changed as the show prepares its return, and how real life bleeds into the characters.
TheWrap: ‘Abbott Elementary’ follows distinct but grounded characters and this very organic sense of humor. Did you need to tweak that recipe when approaching Season 2?
Justin Halpern: It’s me, Pat and [creator/star] Quinta [Brunson], and we just sit...

One of the most popular activations at San Diego Comic-Con wasn’t for a superhero movie or even a genre series. The line for the “Abbott Elementary” installation, which allowed fans to visit a replica of the show’s set, snaked down the block in front of the Hilton Bayfront hotel. It’s not your typical Comic-Con style show, with one major exception: It’s a buzzy show with a growing fanbase.
For a network comedy to earn as much attention in the year of our TV gods 2022 is a miracle. And it takes a once-in-a-generation talent to pull it off. Which is why we can’t stop raving about Quinta Brunson. As Variety noted last month, Brunson made Emmy history by scoring three Emmy nominations for “Abbott”: Outstanding comedy series, lead comedy actress and comedy writing (for the show’s pilot) — making her the first Black woman to...
