An overcast June gloom day couldn’t cast a cloudy spell on the gala celebration held June 12 at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles for the youth-focused arts nonprofit Everybody Dance LA!
Hosted by Melvin Roberts, anchor of Kttv’s “Good Day L.A.” and a weekend anchor for “Extra,” the event was full of fancy footwork and fevered energy, with kids grabbing honorees and attendees to participate in impromptu flash mobs. That set the tone for an evening filled with fun, inspiration, and gratitude.
Edla was created to honor the memory of Gabriella Axelrod, daughter of Edla founder Liza Bercovici, who died at age 13. Bercovici founded the organization in 1999 as a tribute to Gabriella’s love of dance. Today, Edla offers a range of after-school, in-school, enrichment and summer programs for more than 7,000 students a year. In 2014, the organization was awarded the National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award by first lady Michelle Obama.

Because on Wednesday, March 2, Fox revealed that So You Think You Can Dance's long-awaited season 17 will return this summer. The new iteration, which will feature dancers ages 18 to 30 that are skilled in several genres of dance, is set to arrive after an almost three-year hiatus. And Sytycd is now inviting dancers to submit video auditions for season 17. From this pool of auditionees, the show will host in-person auditions in New York City, Los Angeles and New Orleans. The standouts from those tryouts will be invited to perform in Los Angeles for the season 17 judges. The selected performers will...

Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”) and Simu Liu (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”) sat down for a virtual chat for Variety’s Actors on Actors, presented by Amazon Studios. For more, click here.
Prior to 2021, Ariana DeBose and Simu Liu had certainly worked as actors. DeBose was a Tony nominee (“Summer: The Donna Summer Musical”) who’d appeared in Netflix’s “The Prom” and Apple TV Plus’ “Schmigadoon!” Liu was a former stuntman who’d co-starred on the Canadian sitcom “Kim’s Convenience.”
But after their breakout roles last year — DeBose as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s reimagining of “West Side Story” and Liu as Shang-Chi in Marvel Studios’ superhero blockbuster “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” — they’ve both suddenly become household names.
Simu Liu: We’ll get to the amazingness that is “West Side Story” and how incredible you are in it.

“So You Think You Can Dance” contestant-turned-choreographer Travis Wall earned his 10th Emmy nomination this year for the Fox competition series. That puts him within striking distance of not one but two Emmy records. His nominated “Sign of the Times” routine tackled America’s gun violence epidemic in emotional fashion. Watch it above.
See‘So You Think You Can Dance’ judge Mary Murphy’s sad reaction to a cancelled season: ‘We were given the green light. We were all excited’
Before this year’s contenders were announced, Wall had been tied with Derek Hough as the second most nominated choreographer in Emmy history at nine apiece. Now Wall stands alone in second place in the record books. Only one other person has been nominated in this category more times: the legendary Debbie Allen with 11 bids. So Wall just needs one more to share her all-time record.
But that’s not all.

Fox originally renewed its dance competition series “So You Think You Can Dance” for a 17th season in February. But that was before the effects of the coronavirus pandemic were fully known. Since that time, other reality series that rely on live performances like “American Idol” and “The Voice” had to find a way to film their shows remotely.
But Fox decided to be safe rather than sorry and announced the show would not air this summer. A Fox representative issued this statement: “Production on Season 17 of ‘Sytycd’ will not be moving forward due to health and governmental restrictions in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, while we were looking forward to its return this summer, we cannot meet the standards we’ve set for viewers and contestants in light of the show’s unique format, intricate production schedule and limited time.”

On Monday night’s “Dancing with the Stars,” Fifth Harmony alum Ally Brooke received the highest score of the season so far for “Disney Night.” She performed a contemporary routine to the Oscar-winning title song from “Beauty and the Beast.” But did a contemporary dance give her an unfair advantage? That style gets high scores so commonly that I switched to her in my predictions as soon as I found out what she was dancing. And I was right. Should contemporary dances be banned from the show?

Another season of Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” reality show has come to a close. But Gold Derby’s Daniel Montgomery, Susan Wloszczyna and Denton Davidson have some lingering thoughts about the outcome of the Season 16 finale that aired on Monday.
Let’s start with the winner, 19-year-old b-boy Bailey Munoz, the first-ever break-dancer to win the title of America’s favorite dancer. As judge Mary Murphy told Gold Derby, he was the Rudy of this year’s competition as he rose to every occasion and relished the challenge of doing every style of dance from cha cha and jazz to Bollywood and Broadway.

In last week’s “Top 4 Perform,” the final competitive performance episode of the season, Munoz danced Broadway, Bollywood, hip-hop, and smooth jazz with all of his competitors and with all-star Comfort Fedoke. And Bollywood was the only dance for which he received any criticism from the judges — and even that was pretty mild.

“World of Dance” finally got its foot through the door at the 2019 Emmys. Tessandra Chavez won Best Choreography for the series, besting two contenders for “So You Think You Can Dance” and three other nominees for “World of Dance.” Check out the complete list of Creative Arts winners here.
This was a redemption of sorts for “World of Dance,” but it’s actually familiar territory for Chavez. The series was completely snubbed in 2018, which was surprising for a show with such elaborately staged dance numbers, but it dominated the Choreography race this time around with four nominations.

However, Chavez has been to the Emmys before, previously winning Best Choreography for “Dancing with the Stars” in 2015 for the “Elastic Heart” routine she created with siblings Derek Hough and Julianne Hough. Now on “World of Dance,” on which Derek Hough is a judge,...

“There was definitely some heated discussion to put Bailey into this top five guys,” says “So You Think You Can Dance” judge Mary Murphy to Gold Derby senior editors Daniel Montgomery and Susan Wloszczyna about contestant Bailey Munoz. The five-foot-tall b-boy breakout on season 16 of Fox’s reality competition show is one of four hopefuls competing for the title of America’s favorite dancer on the show’s finale that airs at 8 p.m. Et/Pt Sept. 16.
“His size was a consideration,” explains the ballroom specialist who has been part of the show since it began in 2005. In addition, “it’s always scary when we put a b-boy in and will he be able to cope with all the material he is given because they are not trained dancers. They’re not even used to doing choreography.”
However, all concerns melted away once Murphy and fellow judges Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval,...

It all comes down to this. “So You Think You Can Dance” has narrowed the competition to its final four dancers: Gino Cosculluela, Bailey Munoz, Sophie Pittman and Mariah Russell. On “Top 4 Perform” night that quartet danced for the last time before viewers cast their votes for America’s favorite dancer. So who made the best last impression? And who do you think deserves to win? Find out below in our live blog with all the minute-by-minute developments as they happen.
Going into Monday night’s show Munoz was our odds-on-favorite to win, overtaking his partner Russell, whom our readers thought was the front-runner for most of the live shows. The judges have repeatedly dubbed them the couple to beat — though of course, even if they are the best duo of the competition, there can ultimately be only one winner.

Neither “Dancing with the Stars” nor “So You Think You Can Dance” has won Best Competition Program at the Emmys, but they’ve still won more prizes overall than the shows that have, including “The Amazing Race,” “Top Chef,” “The Voice” and “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” “DWTS” currently holds the record with 17 Emmys, but “Sytycd” is right behind it with 16. Could the record change hands this year?
Both shows have four nominations in 2019. “DWTS” is nominated for its costume design, hairstyling, lighting design/direction and makeup. The show won once before for its costumes (2006), three times for its hairstyling (2009-2011), twice for its lighting and twice for its makeup, so it’s a proven champ in all those races.

“Good Morning America” host Lara Spencer apologized for “insensitive” commentary about Prince George’s ballet classes on Monday morning, three days after she made the remarks during a segment on ABC’s morning show.
“The comment I made about dance was insensitive. It was stupid and I am deeply sorry,” she said before announcing that she had interviewed “three influential dancers who have lived it firsthand.”
In a clip of the interview Spencer said was meant to “turn a negative into a positive,” she told Robbie Fairchild, Fabrice Calmels and Travis Wall, “Thank you guys for being here. It has been a true education for me and an opportunity, I hope.”

Good Morning America‘s Lara Spencer apologized further Monday morning on-air over the comments she made last week about six-year-old Prince George taking ballet.
“I screwed up,” Spencer told viewers Monday morning. “The comment I made about dance was insensitive, it was stupid, and I am deeply sorry.” She went on to say she’d spoken with several members of the dance community over the past few days. “I have listened, I have learned about the bravery it takes for a young boy to pursue a career in dance,” she said. She then sequed to a previously recorded group interview she did with three prominent male dancers, Robbie Fairchild (Cats), Travis Wall (So You Think You Can Dance) and Fabrice Calmels (Joffrey Ballet), who relayed stories of the humiliation they felt as young boys when they were laughed at and made fun of because of dance. Lara Spencer's mea culpa over her Prince George gaffe continues. On Thursday, the Good Morning America co-host drew controversy for an on-air segment in which she mocked the fact that Kate Middleton and Prince William's 6-year-old son's takes a ballet class at his London private school, St. Thomas's Battersea. She later apologized for her remarks, which drew accusations of bullying from viewers, including including So You Think You Can Dance star Travis Wall and dance legend, actress and producer Debbie Allen. On Saturday night, Wall revealed that Spencer had reached out to him to try to further make amends. "So Lara Spencer just...

Melvin Timtim was a choreographer and team member for the hip-hop crew S-Rank in season two of “World of Dance.” They lost the world title to the junior team The Lab, but that’s okay. S-Rank could get their revenge at the Emmys, where Timtim is nominated for Best Choreography.
S-Rank performed six times on the show, and Timtim is nominated for three of those routines: “Drop It Like It’s Hot” from the Duels (watch it above), “DNA” from the Cut, and “Headband” from the World Final (watch those two below). Every one of those routines scored over 90 points from judges Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough and Ne-Yo, but now what matters is what television academy judges think.

By the time “So You Think You Can Dance” is down to the top 10 of the season, inevitably someone talented is bound to go home in every elimination. That was true for “Top 10 Perform, Round 2,” where tapper Eddie Hoyt and ballroom dancer Stephanie Sosa were axed. But while the vast majority of our readers (90%) thought getting rid of Sosa was the wrong call on the women’s side, most of them conceded that Hoyt was the right choice for elimination on the men’s side. Scroll down for our complete poll results.
It all came down to his first live performance with his partner Sophie Pittman: a jazz funk dance choreographed by Brian Friedman. While the judges admired Pittman’s performance, Hoyt looked so much like a fish out of water in that dance style that it made Nigel Lythgoe “uncomfortable.” Hoyt redeemed himself the following week when he...

The first two Top 10 contestants sadly got the boot on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ – and Gold Derby senior editors Daniel Montgomery and Susan Wloszczyna saw only one coming for sure. As Daniel says, “For me it was not surprising and very surprising. Eddie Hoyt, the tap dancer who danced jazz funk last week, had a much better contemporary dance. But it wasn’t enough – he was eliminated.”
Ballroom dancer Ezra Sosa was also in the bottom for men while hip-hop specialist Anna Linstruth and Stephanie Sosa – Ezra’s fellow ballroom dancer sister – were in the bottom two. “And the judges sent home Stephanie, which I didn’t understand at all.”
Daniel notes that Susan has had a rooting interest in Eddie, since only one tapper, Season 12’s Gaby Diaz, has ever won on the show. But even she says, “I knew this was going to come for him,...

Hey,"So You Think You Can Dance" fans. Tonight, August 19, 2019,the first Live elimination show did indeed air, and two unlucky dancers got sent home at the end of it. The judges: Lauriann Gibson, Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval, Mary Murphy and Nigel Lythgoe were all on hand to give their critiques. Tonight's episode kicked off with the top ten dancers doing another group routine to Harry Styles' "Sign Of The Times" song. Their choreography was done by Travis Wall. After that,Stephanie Sosa and Gino Cosculluela hit the stage to do a Jive routine by choreographers Emma Slater and Sasha Farber from "Dancing With The Stars." Afterwards, Mary told them, "You were hitting with greatness." Dominic told Gino, "You're a star. Stephanie was equally amazing."Lauriann said, "I smell greatness." Nigel said,"Stephanie was fantastic but, all the credit goes to Gino for tonight." Next, they revealed that Gino is safe this week,...

No one had a rougher night than tap dancer Eddie Hoyt during the first live show of “So You Think You Can Dance” season 16. After performing a hip-hop routine to secure his spot in the top 10, he was pilloried by the judges for his attempt at jazz funk with partner Sophie Pittman. So he had more to prove than anyone else during “Top 10 Perform, Round 2.” Watch their routine above.
The good news for Hoyt was that, after being thrown in the deep end with way-out-of-his-comfort-zone hip-hop and funk routines, this time he got to settle into a contemporary number choreographed by Travis Wall to Billie Eilish‘s “When the Party’s Over.” It still required Hoyt to stretch himself physically and emotionally — at first he had some trouble partnering with Pittman while rehearsing their number — but Wall thought it could be their “redeeming moment.”

“This is another one of those pieces where you know the weight of it before it’s going to hit the air,” Travis Wall told us about the August 19 opening number on “So You Think You Can Dance” (watch it above). We recorded our interview with Wall on Friday, August 16, as the top 10 contestants were preparing for the emotional routine inspired by America’s gun violence epidemic and set to Harry Styles‘s “Sign of the Times.”
The performance featured all 10 “Sytycd” competitors who made it to the live shows: Madison Jordan, Ezra Sosa, Stephanie Sosa, Gino Cosculluela, Sophie Pittman, Eddie Hoyt, Anna Linstruth, Benjamin Castro, Mariah Russell and Bailey Munoz. Their movements evoked the sudden violent jolt of gun death as well as the group fear, tension and grief that can result. The judges especially loved two duets from the season premiere: Bailey Munoz and Mariah Russell‘s jazz number and Madison Jordan and Ezra Sosa‘s contemporary routine. The readers we polled loved those dances too. However, the judges were “uncomfortable” with Eddie Hoyt‘s performance of jazz funk, though they praised his partner Sophie Pittman. And the technically gifted Gino Cosculluela got mixed reviews for his hip-hop dance opposite Stephanie Sosa.

“So You Think You Can Dance” choreographer Travis Wall felt like an “emotional wreck” last summer during season 15. “It was like the most vulnerable I’d ever been,” he admits, “and at the same time I’m creating from my inner turmoil, and it’s going out to millions of people. I was a bit of a broken glass, you’d say.” But that vulnerability led to his ninth Emmy nomination for Best Choreography. He’s now tied with Derek Hough as the second biggest nominee in the category (behind Debbie Allen with 11), and if he wins it’ll be his third prize, tying the record as the biggest winner of all time. Watch our exclusive video interview with Wall above.

“So You Think You Can Dance” has won Best Choreography at the Emmys 11 times, far more than any other program in history. Two of those awards went to Travis Wall, who is nominated again this year for the ninth time. If he wins his third prize, he’ll tie the all-time record for the most awards won by an individual in this category. And one of his nominated routines, “It Takes a Lot to Know a Man,” was called a “masterpiece” by “Sytycd” judges, so it might be tough to beat. Watch it above.
Performed last summer by “Sytycd” contestant Darius Hickman and all-star Taylor Sieve, the contemporary routine was inspired by Wall’s experience of coming out as gay and the bullying he and others face as a result. Karen Forcano and Ricardo Vega, also known as Karen y Ricardo, were eliminated from season two of “World of Dance” in an upset last summer, but now they could get their revenge by winning an Emmy. They’re nominated for Best Choreography for three of their routines: “Pegate,” “La Malanga” and “Caminare.” Scroll down to see those three routines at the bottom of this post.
The Latin cabaret duo were the front-runners to win the show right out of the gate. “Pegate” was their Qualifiers performance, and judges Jennifer Lopez, Derek Hough and Ne-Yo were so overwhelmed by it that they leapt out of their seats when it was over. That performance earned them an average score of 99.7 out of 100, which at the time was unprecedented. Then they scored 98.3 for “La Malanga” during the Duels round. And they hit the 99 mark again during the Cut with “Caminare.”

On the sixth episode of season 11 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” Scarlet Envy was eliminated. Vote in our poll below and be sure to sound off in the comments section with your thoughts on episode 6, “The Draglympics,” which aired April 4 on VH1.
Scarlet and Ra’Jah ended up in the bottom two after failing to impress RuPaul Charles and the three guest judges — choreographer Travis Wall and Olympic figure skaters Mirai Nagasu and Adam Rippon — throughout the sixth series of competitions.
