Exclusive: Classic British comic characters from The Beano, The Dandy and Commando are set to head to film and TV after publisher DC Thomson and Beano Studios launched Emanata Studios.
The companies, which are behind brands such as Dennis The Menace and Bananaman, are launching the division to develop the UK’s largest comic archive for film and TV and have struck deals with the likes of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith’s Westbrook Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer TV.
In the U.S., Emanata and Westbrook Studios are developing a high-concept drama based on the very first British comic book superhero The Amazing Mr X, who is featured in Dandy.
Jerry Bruckheimer TV and CBS Studios have also come on board a live-action dramedy based on Dennis the Menace. The project, which Deadline revealed last year, comes from Matthew Barry, a writer on Netflix’s Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

The feature debut from acclaimed commercials director Dom Bridges and written by Rae Brunton (the Outpost franchise) Freehold is a dark urban morality tale with an underlying streak of jet black comedy. Hussein, a wide-boy estate agent, doesn’t realise he’s sharing his apartment with a forgotten stranger, a master of concealment… until his malicious campaign of deranged sweet revenge starts to really hit home. A roof above our heads is a basic human need so why are we all fighting each other over it?
Originally titled 2Pigeons (a title that has more in common with the films story than you can imagine), Freehold shares a lot in common with previous Frightfest flicks Housebound and Hangman, in so much as all three films deal with homes being encroached...

Two Pigeons plays off one of my biggest paranoias. This idea of comfort and safety being nothing but illusions. We convince ourselves that when we’re not home, a locked door keeps unwanted snoopers out of our domiciles. Each night, we drift to sleep assuming that nothing will happen while our body lies unresponsive. What if this wasn’t true? Filmmaker Dominic Bridges follows in the footsteps of home-invasion thrillers like Intruder and Hangman in this perverse “comedy” about privacy being earned. Those sick enough can torture us when we’re at our most vulnerable, from wherever they please. The problem is, can Bridges find torment before flying the coop?
Mim Shaikh stars as Hussein, an “oily” real estate agent with questionable morals. Each day he goes through the same routine, sun up to sun down. Wake up, shower, brush teeth, leave for work. When Hussein walks out the door,...

With little over a month to go until Austin plays host to SXSW 2017 for another year, organizers of the annual showcase have announced that James Franco’s drama The Disaster Artist has been added to the stacked lineup.
Based on Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell’s non-fiction book The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, Franco’s passion project is set to recount the infamous story behind The Room, Tommy Wiseau’s widely-derided pic that has since gone on to become something of a cult classic. No release date has been set, but we know that the feature will be written and directed by Franco, who stars as the eccentric Wiseau, and features a cast comprised of Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Josh Hutcherson, Ari Graynor, Jacki Weaver, and former Community star Alison Brie. Rae Brunton performed some script duties with David Cairns and Fiona Watson. Brunton is also responsible for the Outpost films. The story sounds a bit like that Fear Itself episode directed by Stuart Gordon, "Eater" (starring Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss).

A movie about Nazi zombies – why am I not more excited? The Outpost franchise started some years ago with a Ray Stevenson led action thriller about German WWII bastards looking for that war defining game-changer – but this isn’t Call of Duty. Outpost was fun, don’t get me wrong, but we’re now three films into a franchise that most horror fans didn’t even know existed, and that’s the disheartening vibe our most recent film embodies. Doing nothing to expand upon the idea of shambling undead German soldiers, Outpost: Rise Of The Spetsnaz re-introduces the idea of Nazi zombies and does absolutely nothing worth noting. More tired franchise ideas and generic genre play with a dash of gooey, gory distractions – did you expect anything else?
During battle, a group of Russian Spetsnaz soldiers are taken captive by German forces looking to test their new breed of soldier.

As we often do, especially when dealing with Part 3s that originate from outside of North America, we'll open with a recap. Outpost (2007) gave us some modern-day mercenaries who stumble across an undead creature that's been waiting for victims since WWII. Outpost 2: Black Sun (2012) focused on a platoon of Nato experts who respond to the previous carnage -- which leads to even more carnage. The second chapter gave us a few glimpses of the WWII origins of the Nazi Zombie Stormtrooper Monsters...
... but it's Outpost 3: Rise of the Spetsnaz (2014) that takes us back to 1945 and offers a fitfully amusing prequel to this progressively sillier indie horror franchise. As a horror junkie who sort of enjoyed the first two Outpost flicks, even I'll have to admit that Part 3 is probably the weakest of the lot, but screenwriter Rae Brunton, who co-wrote the previous chapters, has just enough ideas to...

Dying for some interesting zombie movie news? Yeah, we figured you were. We've just learned that writers Kieran Parker, Rae Brunton and Steve Barker are currently writing the sequel to 2007’s Outpost.
I wasn't under the impression that the first film did well enough to warrant a sequel, but there you go. I liked the first film's atmosphere but found it rather dull in parts. Here's hoping the second one will be a more solid affair. It's currently listed with a winter 2009 date, but that may actually be when they hope to start filming. Either way we'll keep you posted.
Anyone out there an Outpost fan?...
