The Armando Iannucci comedy series “Avenue 5” has been canceled after two seasons at HBO, Variety has learned.
“Going to space with Armando Iannucci has been an incredible journey,” an HBO spokesperson said. “While we will not be moving forward with a third season of ‘Avenue 5,’ we look forward to many more adventures together.”
The series originally debuted on HBO in January 2020, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic production on Season 2 could not begin until late 2021, with the second season finally debuting in October 2022. The series ultimately received middling reviews upon its release and generated only modest ratings.
The series starred Hugh Laurie, Josh Gad, Zach Woods, Rebecca Front, Suzy Nakamura, Lenora Crichlow, Nikki Amuka-Bird, and Ethan Phillips.
The series took place in the not-so-distant future when space tourism is a booming business. Per the official logline, “While manning a luxury spacecraft owned by Herman Judd (Gad), Captain Ryan Clark...

Captain Ryan Clark, played by Hugh Laurie, is ready to just “sit here and wait for death” as an ill-fated spaceship heads straight into the Sun.
So starts the trailer for Season 2 of HBO’s “Avenue 5,” where food is running low and passengers on a luxury space craft will have to wait eight years before returning to Earth. Josh Gad reprises his role of billionaire Herman Judd, who owns the spaceship captained by Ryan (Laurie) as customer relations executive Matt (Zach Woods) tries to thwart the growing panic onboard. The second season premieres October 10 on HBO.
Created by two-time Emmy winner and “Veep” alum Armando Iannucci, “Avenue 5” is set 40 years into the future where traveling the solar system is a booming tourism business. The eight-episode second season charts how an eight-week space cruise has turned into a nightmare never-ending vacation for those onboard.

So the title of this new comedy refers to one of the “seven deadly sins” as labeled in most Christian teachings. In these times the word’s a bit more complicated. After all, fictional real estate mogul Gordon Geeko, in an Oscar-winning performance by Michael Douglas, proclaimed that it is “good” in one of the most quoted scenes from Oliver Stone’s 1987 classic Wall Street. Another take on that word now comes from two-thirds of the trio responsible for a delightful series of comedic travelogues that began ten years ago with The Trip. But they’re not going after Stone’s street, rather they’re taking aim at Great Britain’s avenue of haughty fashion retail shops, High Street. And as you might have guessed, this isn’t a remake of the Erich von Stroheim silent 1924 epic. The sin’s much the same, but this is a completely different take on Greed.

Filmmaker Chris Morris has kept audiences waiting for quite some time since his ambitious movie Four Lions hit theaters. That was almost a decade ago, with only four episodes of Veep under his belt since then, and nothing in the past five years or so. All this is to say that Morris’ satirical voice has been missing from cinemas. That changes this week when his sophomore flick The Day Shall Come opens. Having debuted earlier this year the South by Southwest Film Festival, it now ventures out, hoping to catch on. While some will no doubt be put off by some of the content, Morris is telling a deeply American story that’s as enraging as it is humorous. The movie is a comedy about the tragic way things work in America. Based on hundreds of true stories (as the film states), The Day Shall Come introduces us to a...

A serrated but superficial portrait of how capitalism distances the rich from its consequences, Michael Winterbottom’s damning sendup is often right on the money, but its broadside attacks on the ultra-rich are too obvious to draw any blood or raise our hackles. What more could you really expect from a bitter comedy about a Branson-esque billionaire named Rich McGreedy? Okay, technically the business tycoon that Steve Coogan plays is called Sir Richard McCreadi, but no one in the movie (nor anyone watching it) is fooled by the spelling; Winterbottom isn’t exactly trying to get away with it.
“Greed” likens Richard’s lifestyle (and the tax-dodging schemes through which he maintains it) to a magic trick, and the case could be made that the film only exists for the gallows humor it gleans from a system that’s allowed the world’s 28 richest people to have more money than its 3.8 billion poorest.

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to “Greed,” a satire about the super-rich from director Michael Winterbottom starring Steve Coogan, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.
The film, which made its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend at the Elgin Theater, skewers the world of high fashion, specifically looking at the grotesque inequality between a greedy billionaire (Coogan) and the female garment workers who toil on his fashion line. Winterbottom follows the billionaire as he preps his lavish, 60th birthday party in Mykonos, as overseen by reality TV cameras, all while Syrian refugees have arrived and set up camp on the Greek shores.
David Mitchell, Isla Fisher, Shirley Henderson, Asa Butterfield, Dinita Gohil, Shanina Shaik and Sarah Solemani co-star in the film that Winterbottom wrote and directed, with additional material from Sean Gray.

Michael Winterbottom’s entertaining mockumentary about a high-street fashion tycoon presents a hideous carnival of obscene wealth, vanity and moral squalor
That exhilaratingly prolific film-maker Michael Winterbottom – working with additional material from Sean Gray from The Thick of It – has served up a breezy, funny, unsubtle scattershot satire-melodrama all about the moral squalor of the super-rich. They are epitomised by a fictional high-street fashion mogul called Sir Richard “Greedy” McCreadie as he prepares for a monumentally tasteless, Fyre festival-ish, Roman-themed 60th birthday party on the plutocrats’ island of Mykonos. (Rome in Greece? Why not?)
McCreadie has just suffered a nightmare of bad publicity following a catastrophic performance in front of a parliamentary select committee, and all the celebs are starting to pull out of his bash. One star who will be there is Clarence, a real, live lion for a re-creation of the Coloseum scene from the movie Gladiator. There...

Pic stars Steve Coogan, David Mitchell, Isla Fisher, Shirley Henderson, Asa Butterfield, Dinita Gohil, Shanina Shaik, and Sarah Solemani. Coogan, who worked with Winterbottom on The Trip To Spain and The Trip To Italy, here plays a retail billionaire preparing for a lavish celebration of his 60th birthday on the Greek island of Mykonos. The occasion is overseen by a reality-tv camera crew, and a writer (Mitchell) hired to craft McCreadie’s hagiographic biography with assistance from McCreadie’s ex-wife (Fisher). Meanwhile, refugees from Syria have set up camp on a nearby beach, much to the consternation of hotel staff and local authorities. In the process, horrendous truths regarding McCreadie’s past are revealed...

The 2018 Writers Guild of America Awards take place on Feb. 11 with simultaneous ceremonies held in both New York and Los Angeles. Only scripts written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for these awards. As such, these kudos are not the most reliable barometer of the Oscars.
In the past nine years only 59 of the WGA nominees have numbered among the 90 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids. Indeed, 2014’s Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay, “Birdman,” was deemed ineligible. Likewise for one of this year’s leading contenders for that award: “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.”
On the television side, the leading nominees are “Better Call Saul,” which competes for best drama series writing as well as for two individual episodes and “The Americans,” which is up for both overall drama series writing and an individual episode. Over in comedy, reigning Emmy...

Veep, Season 5, Episode 5: “Thanksgiving”
Written by Sean Gray & Georgia Pritchett & Will Smith
Directed by Chris Addison
Airs Sunday at 10:30pm on HBO
I recently wrote about Veep’s lead-in on HBO, Silicon Valley, and how that show is best and funniest when the characters are dealing with a crisis. Veep operates similarly, but for different reasons; whenever Selina and her associates are confronted with a major problem, she results to unethical and immoral behavior to save her butt. As a portrait of Washington incompetence and immorality, Veep is most successful when it allows Selena to be a garbage person. “Thanksgiving” is less successful than the fantastic run of episodes so far this season because it doesn’t have any major crisis to showcase Selena’s depravity.

Meyer’s Families First bill had been on a downward slide since its introduction at the beginning of the season, even earning the derisive nickname “Mommy Meyer Bill” and proving it doesn’t have the support of even Selina’s old friends. The combination of these factors led to the decision to try and kill the bill, a move that succeeded, but not before the administration’s scheming was discovered by Congress. This week’s episode sees the team face a deposition and a congressional hearing, in another strong outing that sees Meyer’s team lose yet another member.
Watching how Selina’s staff operates from the other side is a fascinating perspective this week.

The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

Over the course of Veep’s second season, Selina Meyer grew increasingly disillusioned with her position as vice-president, disillusion which seemed to be mirrored by the President himself. While a second presidential run for Meyer seemed to be a foregone conclusion, the end of last season gave a strong indication that she would get this chance sooner rather than later. The third season premiere of Veep picks up on this thread again, in a hilarious episode that nonetheless manages to set up some compelling stories and character dynamics for the upcoming season.
The firing of Jonah is a solid shakeup to the existing character dynamics, and opens up some intriguing possibilities.

Spike Jonze’s philosophical sci-fi love story Her, and Billy Ray’s harrowing true-life hostage saga Captain Phillips earned best original and adapted screenplays, respectively, from the Writers Guild Awards on Saturday.
In the original category, Her was facing its four rivals for the Oscar: American Hustle, Blue Jasmine, Dallas Buyers Club, and Nebraska, so its victory can be seen as a strong harbinger of where the Academy Award could go on March 2. In anecdotal sampling of Academy members, EW’s Prize Fighter has also determined that Her is far and away the front-runner for this category.

Tonight, the Writers Guild of America presented their awards for excellence in film and television for 2013. All eyes were on their top two categories, Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay, and while the former went to Spike Jonze’s incredible Her as expected, the latter went to Billy Ray’s Captain Phillips, which was completely out of the blue.
Her was widely expected to win due to its immense popularity throughout awards season, taking 20 screenplay wins from groups such as the HFPA and Bfca. However, Captain Phillips was a complete surprise given that it had not managed to win a single screenplay award prior to tonight, but as I’ve said before, it was going to be hard to tell which nominee was the favorite given the fact that the disqualified 12 Years a Slave has been the clear frontrunner throughout the season. However, it’s still quite shocking that Before Midnight...

The Thick of It Series 4, Episode 7
Written by Simon Blackwell, Sean Gray, Ian Martin, Tony Roche, Will Smith
Directed by Tony Roche
Original airdate October 27, 2012
For four seasons and two specials, The Thick of it, acted as a strange hybrid between The West Wing and The Office. Some might argue that The Thick of it is technically better than either of those shows (this writer included), and the final episode proves why.
With bullet fast dialogue and intensely good acting (you’ll always be Malcolm Tucker to us Peter Capaldi), The Thick of it thrust viewers into a behind the scenes look at British government, often focusing on the barely functioning fictional Department of Social Affairs and Citizenship and the two ministers that run the department, first Hugh Abbot (Chris Langham) and later Nicola Murray (the painfully funny Rebecca Front). They are “helped” by aides Ollie Reeder (Chris Addison), Terri...

Veep, Season 2, Episode 9: “Running”
Written by Sean Gray and Will Smith
Directed by Tim Kirkby
Airs Sundays at 10pm (Et) on HBO
Selina admitting knowledge of the CIA spy last week came at the heels of a season-long campaign where she has ended up on the losing end of most political matters without having any say in the decision. Becoming the public face of accountability for atleast one of the government’s scandals thus gave her the ability to control the narrative in atleast one situation. The season’s penultimate episode this week sees Selina try to take further control of her political career as she realises her role in the current administration, in an episode that continues to be funny while still managing to effectively move the characters forward.
Watching Selina articulate a level of self-awareness regarding the downward turn her career was taking,...

Veep, Season 2, Episode 3: “Hostages”
Written by Sean Gray and Armando Iannucci
Directed by Chris Addison
Airs Sundays at 10pm (Et) on HBO
Speeches are a key part of any politician’s career. A good speech can immortalise a politician, while a bad one can weigh down the rest of their career like an anchor. The amount of time politicians and their staff spend on the specific wording of any given speech, and the message it conveys, thus makes sense in this context, but nonetheless remains an absurd exercise, and it is this aspect of politics that Veep tackles this week, in an episode that displays the human side of Selina Meyer while turning the spotlight on the one-upmanship politicians play with civilian lives.
Watching Selina process the soldier’s injury was a great way to re-open the look at her humanity. Watching her navigate the halls of Congress on a weekly basis,...

Anyone remember the 2009 political-satire "In The Loop"? The film was a festival hit and featured a side-splitting performance from Peter Capaldi as political hot-shot Malcolm Tucker. That film was, in fact, a spin off original BBC show "The Thick Of It" -- both of which are the brainchild of Armando Ianucci. Attempts had been to remake the show for HBO and while there was a pilot shot, it was one Ianucci wasn't a fan of and was never picked up.
But the good news is that Ianucci has now developed a whole new show for the cable-channel titled "Veep," starring Julia Louis-Dreyfuss as the Vice President of the U.S. The first trailer has now been unveiled and exhibits a behind-the-scenes, political satire very much in the vein of its predecessors, and it promises to deliver some seroius laughs.

The Virgin Media Shorts Awards Ceremony which took place at the British Film Institute on London’s Southbank, truly was the star studded event it set out to be. From start to finish the evening was an array of stylish suits, cocktail dresses, alcoholic beverages, great films and music, laughter and more importantly, Celebration with a capital C.
A host of stars were also in attendance including Singer/DJ Paloma Faith, actress of Wuthing Heights/ Skins Kaya Scodelario, Vanessa Kirby (The Hour), Douglas Booth (Great Expectations), Submarine actor Craig Roberts, Attack the Block star Jodie Whittaker and Downton Abbey actresses Laura Carmichael and Joanne Froggatt.
After enjoying a lovely Champagne reception with live music from Alice Russell we were ushered into a cinema area for the main purpose of the evening- the presentation of awards. With a glass of champagne in hand and a tub of popcorn with complimentary cinema tickets attached,...

They're a talented lot over there at The Thick Of It - my favorite piece of televised satire over the past several years and also the basis for hit film In The Loop - so it should come as no surprise that more members of the team are moving towards directing.
Writer Sean Gray has just released his short film Bistro, a dark comedy starring The Thick Of It's Peter Capaldi and Alex MacQueen. Shot as part of the Electric Shorts competition you can find the complete piece below. And if you like it, do make a point of voting for it as the competition is vote based, not view based!
