The “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night” director spoke to IndieWire about why she decided to direct an episode of the series, which returns for a second season on Tuesday, May 2.
“I was excited to collaborate with Nat Geo because I’ve been a fan of since I was a kid; I grew up watching shows on nature and science with my Dad, who’s also a big fan,” she said. “And when I sat down with the producers of ‘Breakthrough,’ discussing possible topics I could tackle, I found myself drawn to the topic of cancer treatment without really knowing why.

Sony Pictures Animation won an auction between three studios for an animated movie pitch centering on the Emoji, which are icons often used in social media to express emotions and objects. The project will be co-written by Eric Siegel and Anthony Leondis. It will be directed by Leondis (Igor, Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Masters), who initially pitched the project to studios (Sony, Warner Bros, Paramount), with storyboards highlighting details of the story. The attractive thing about an "Emoji" movie is that there are no rights to purchase. Because of that, there is already another similar project being shopped around.

It was going to happen eventually, wasn't it? A Hollywood movie about emojis is in the works.
Sony Pictures Animation won a three-studio auction to produce an animated movie centring around the popular colourful emoticons. All of your favourites will be there, including smiley face, confused face, angry face and of course, the pile of poo.
Can you guess the 15 films from the emojis? Play our quiz
Eric Siegel and Anthony Leondis (Kung Fu Panda) will write the project, with Leondis also directing, Deadline reports.
There is also another potential movie about emojis being shopped around studios, so be prepared for more than one.

Have you ever texted a smiley face and wondered, “there’s a movie in this sign.” Well, you’re in luck because Sony thought that exactly.
According to Deadline, Sony Pictures Animation defeated Warner Bros. and Paramount in a bidding war to the right of an emojis movie. The script is coming from Eric Siegel with Anthony Leondis directing the film.
While there have been some crazy ideas lately, this may take the cake. The Lego Movie seemed like a crazy idea, but there was enough worldbuilding within the toys that a movie could be created. Making a movie about emojis seems like a completely far-fetched idea and who knows what direction they’ll take with it.
Deadline adds that there isn’t an IP attached to emojis so another project could be on the way from someone else.

It's happening. They're making an emoji movie. And this is on top of Lego movies galore, a Minecraft movie, and whatever this Pixels thing is. Deadline is reporting updates on both projects, at separate studios. The Minecraft movie has been in the works for a while, since the game is has been very successful for a while now. The big news is that Rob McElhenney, best known for co-creating and co-starring in the FX series "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia", will be directing the Minecraft movie for Warner Bros. Originally it had Shawn Levy attached, but that's no longer the case. As for the emoji movie, Sony Pictures Animation (Hotel Transylvania, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) just won the auction for a pitch based on emoji. The emoji movie pitch included co-writers Eric Siegel and Anthony Leondis on the script, with Leondis attached to direct. He has quite a bit of animation experience previously,...

How you react to news that Sony – already in production on one film based on a modern tech trend with Angry Birds – is planning one based around Emoji might depend on your age and your ‘net-savviness. So prepare to consider this Omg awesomesauce or another sign of the end times…According to Deadline, Sony Pictures Animation won a bidding war for a pitch by director Anthony Leondis, who travelled between the studios with a batch of storyboards showing how the basic plot will play out. Sony nabbed the project and Eric Siegel is aboard to turn the idea into a script for an animated adventure.Quite what that will be remains to be seen: at least in the case of something like Lego or the Angry Birds, you had narrative plans, characters and worlds built up. Emoji, the Japan-spawned graphical representations of faces, pets, objects and, yes, poop, wouldn’t...

Exclusive: In a deal near seven figures, Sony Pictures Animation won a three-studio auction for an animated movie pitch centering on the Emoji, those lovable round headed figures that are as much a staple of social media correspondence as adverbs and adjectives. Sony Pictures Animation has won a heated auction for an animated movie pitch centering on emojis, the ideograms which are a key component of modern day social media correspondence.
Eric Siegel and Anthony Leondis will co-write the project which Leondis ("B.O.O.: Bureau Of Otherworldly Operations") will direct, and the pair have already storyboarded out a bunch of the film as part of the pitch. Sony beat out both Warner Bros. Pictures and Paramount Pictures for the project.
First hatched in Japan, emojis are now a worldwide phenomenon and - more importantly - aren't copyrighted and thus public domain. There's reportedly another emoji-related pitch about to be shopped around which is why Sony Animation moved so fast on this.

Filmmaker Todd Phillips has made a career of documenting the modern man-child's debauchery: Will Ferrell's beer-bong-sucking nice guy in "Old School," Owen Wilson's stoner-cop in "Starsky & Hutch," and basically the entire cast of the booze-sodden "Hangover." Now Phillips is planning to document the travails of another debaucherous funnyman. But this time, it's a true story, and we should expect a dose of tragedy to be mixed in with the drug-addled madness.
Phillips and screenwriter Steven Conrad ("The Pursuit of Happyness") are developing a biopic based on the life of John Belushi, following Warner Bros.' acquisition of the comedian's life-story rights from his estate, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Conrad is set to pen the script, with Phillips onboard as a producer but not yet committed to directing the project.
