Everyone had their favorite Tom Wilkinson film, ranging from Michael Clayton to The Full Monty and countless others.
But as fans, friends, family and the entertainment industry woke up to the news that the actor has passed away, they struggled to come up with superlatives for his skillful portrayals through more than 130 film and television roles.
George Clooney issued a statement on his friend, with whom he starred in Michael Clayton. “Tom made every project better. Made every actor better. He was the epitome of elegance and he will be dearly missed by all of us.”

Drew Carey today saluted the writers who thanked him for the meals he provided strikers at Bob’s Big Boy and Swingers during the WGA work stoppage. It was his first public comments on his charitable efforts.
“I deeply appreciate all the love and thanks. It (was worth) every dime. But if you really want to thank someone for those meals, thank Bruce Helford and all the Drew Carey Show writers.
They helped make me rich enough to afford it. No writers, no $. Simple as that.”
The emcee of The Price Is Right didn’t previously comment in the media about his decision to cover the tabs at the two restaurants since the May strike began. Thus, no one knows the cost, but estimates of $10,000 per week have been bandied in the media.
A guest book was placed at Bob’s for all the hungry scribes to show their appreciation.

Editor’s note: As part of Deadline’s ongoing coverage of the WGA strike, we have been giving voice to below-the-line workers who have been impacted by the work stoppage. Here, we decided to change gears by asking a writer to recall first-hand what it was like to create a low-budget comedy for Netflix that had no writers room. The show was ultimately canceled. Fearful that it may impact his ability to find jobs in the future, he asked that his name not be used.
I have been on a lot of shows over the years. I would call myself more of a blue-collar writer in that I pretty consistently worked as a number two, number three or number four on all types of half-hour shows, some for network, some for cable. This was the first opportunity to [launch] something that I created. It was my first show for a streamer.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details of Your Honor Season 2.
Bryan Cranston clarified the comments he made on Dax Shepard’s recent Armchair Expert podcast ruling out a third season for Your Honor, saying they might have been misconstrued. The actor told Deadline’s Lynette Rice at Contenders TV Sunday that Showtime is interested in a third season, but he might not appear in it.
“My comment was I’m not sure that there could be or there is,” Cranston said. “There is some discussion. Showtime has indicated there is interest and we’re very proud to know that every episode in Season 2 increased in the audience from the previous week. If it happens, fantastic but it’d have to be some great reason to keep expanding in this world and to find out where the allegiances are. I’d be very interested in producing that. I don’t know...

It was no April Fool’s joke: Yellowstone fans who were expecting to hear from Taylor Sheridan and his drama’s biggest stars were no-shows at PaleyFest in Los Angeles Saturday.
When the panel was first announced, fans were promised a starry lineup that included all the main cast members like Kevin Costner, Kelly Reilly, Cole Hauser, Luke Grimes, Kelsey Asbille, Wes Betley, Gil Birmingham and Jacki Weaver. It was also promising that executive producers Taylor Sheridan and David Glasser would be on hand, along with “additional guests to be announced.”
However, when the time came to celebrate Yellowstone at the Dolby Theatre Saturday night, the lineup drastically changed, despite the website still showing all the stars and EPs earlier in the day.
After screening episode 507 titled “The Dream Is Not Me,” fans were then told by a PaleyFest rep that the panel lineup had changed because of “scheduling conflicts.

In a hard-to-call category, Amanda Seyfried won her first Emmy, for a nuanced portrayal of Elizabeth Holmes, the disgraced biotech entrepreneur and one-time Silicon Valley rock star convicted of criminal fraud.
“Thanks for recognizing me among these amazing actors,” said an emotional Seyfried. “This is a really nice feeling!”
Deadline’s Emmy Awards Live Blog
Working on Hulu’s The Dropout “was the best time of my life,” she added as she accepted her first Emmy, for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.
But Seyfried told press later that playing Homes was pretty taxing. “I was so over her by the end of the show. You have to delude yourself to a point. I had to delude myself more than normal. I had to have compassion for her. I have never played anyone that long. Every single day I gave it all. I was just done.

For over a decade and on two different series, Christine Baranski’s attorney Diane Lockhart has been a paragon of liberal feminism. But in the fifth season of Paramount+’s “The Good Fight,” the Emmy-winning actress took the character into a new, daring and even uncomfortable direction as the show explored Diane’s privilege. After sitting out the past five Emmy cycles for this performance — even as she continues to bring her signature character to new heights — Baranski has more than earned a slot in this year’s Drama Actress lineup for her nuanced and thrilling work this season.
Baranski had two major intersecting storylines in the critically-acclaimed fifth season. In the first, her staunch Republican husband Kurt (Gary Cole) gets embroiled in the FBI’s investigation of the Jan. 6 insurrection after a man he trained at a shooting range was photographed at the capitol. Ron Howard said he wasn’t in the room when Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards on Sunday, but shared that he found the situation “very upsetting.”
The Oscar-winner, who was watching the awards ceremony on TV, reacted to the shocking moment during a panel for FX’s upcoming drama Under The Banner of Heaven.
“These are people I’m very friendly with and I was shocked. I wouldn’t have expected this kind of behavior,” Howard, who executive produces the series, told Deadline during the virtual session on Tuesday. “I’m not on the Academy board and I can’t speak for their process but I do know them and they will be very, very thoughtful. I will be curious to see what sort of decisions they make.”
Brian Grazer, Howard’s longtime collaborator and series executive producer, also shared his thoughts on the Smith-Rock altercation.

It's a beautiful day to spill Grey's Anatomy tea. In an excerpt from Lynette Rice's new book, How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey's Anatomy—which was first obtained by The Hollywood Reporter—it was revealed that there wasn't just drama in the scripts of the ABC medical show. Specifically, through interviews conducted with Grey's stars and producers, the origin story behind Patrick Dempsey's exit was discussed, and, frankly, it left us needing a crash cart. According to James D. Parriott, a former executive producer for Grey's, things were very tense between Dempsey and series creator Shonda Rhimes by season 11. Grey's Anatomy stunned fans when it killed off Patrick Dempsey's Derek Shepherd during its 11th season.
There have been reports of bad blood between Dempsey and creator Shonda Rhimes for years, and thanks to Lynette Rice's How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey's Anatomy, we might finally get some answers.
A snippet of the book, shared by The Hollywood Reporter, touches on the controversial exit.
Former EP James D. Parriott said in the book that Rhimes needed "an Og to come in as sort of a showrunner for 14 episodes” to right the ship.
“There were Hr issues” with Dempsey, according to Parriott.
“It wasn’t sexual in any way. He sort of was terrorizing the set. Some cast members had all sorts of Ptsd with him. He had this hold on the set where he knew he could stop production and scare people," the book continued.

In an excerpt from Lynette Rice’s How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey’s Anatomy published Thursday by The Hollywood Reporter, former executive producer James D. Patrick Dempsey’s Season 11 exit from “Grey’s Anatomy” came amid “Hr issues” that weren’t “sexual in any way” and instances of Dempsey — who played Derek “McDreamy” Shepard, the love interest of Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey — “terrorizing the set” of the ABC medical drama, an executive producer from the show says in the upcoming book, “How to Save a Life: The Inside Story of Grey’s Anatomy.”
In an excerpt from author Lynette Rice’s unauthorized “Grey’s” guide, which will be released Sept. 21, published by The Hollywood Reporter, James D. Parriott says series creator Shonda Rhimes “needed an Og to come in as sort of a showrunner for fourteen episodes,” which is what brought him back to “Grey’s” to help in the final days of Dempsey’s tenure there.

In 1997, Gillian Anderson won her first career Emmy Award for playing FBI Agent Dana Scully on Fox’s sci-fi hit “The X-Files.” After nearly tripping on her way up to the stage (watch above), the actress praised Helen Mirren, who presented her with the statuette, and thanked her friends and family. Now, 24 years later, Anderson is on track to claim Emmy #2 thanks to her buzzed-about role as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on “The Crown.”
As of this writing, all 24 of our Emmy Experts from major media outlets predict Anderson will prevail in Best Drama Supporting Actress. That translates to overwhelming 4/1 odds to win. “RuPaul’s Drag Race” has been indomitable in the reality categories at the Emmys in recent years, but could there be an upset in 2021 for Best Competition Program? A couple of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed from major media outlets are betting on an upset by the Netflix series “Nailed It.” Could they be onto something?
Best Competition Program has been prone to winning streaks ever since the category was established in 2003. “The Amazing Race” won for the first seven years in a row (2003-2009). Then it lost to “Top Chef” in 2010 before winning again in 2011 and 2012. “The Voice” prevailed in 2013 before “Amazing Race” won its 10th (and so far last) prize in 2014.

Emma Corrin is the Emmy front-runner for Best Drama Actress for playing Princess Diana in season four of “The Crown,” following her victories at the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards. But not everyone agrees on that outcome. Though most of the Expert journalists we’ve surveyed share that consensus, there are four betting on Mj Rodriguez (“Pose”) in what would be a historic victory.
Eric Deggans (NPR), Libby Hill (IndieWire), Lynette Rice (Entertainment Weekly), and Keith Simanton (IMDb) say Rodriguez will prevail, and she does have a few noteworthy advantages. The third and final season of “Pose” aired at the end of the spring, so it was much more recent than “The Crown,” which premiered its episodes last fall. That means it’ll be fresher in mind for voters.

If Gold Derby’s predictions are true that “Sylvie’s Love” will win the Emmy for Best TV Movie, it would be a first for Amazon Prime Video. Previously the streamer contended once in this category for “King Lear” (2019), losing to Netflix’s “Black Mirror: Bandersnatch.” The new telefilm stars Tessa Thompson as Sylvie, a 1950s record store worker who has dreams of becoming a television producer. She soon falls in love with Robert (Nnamdi Asomugha) and they begin a years-long, on-again/off-again relationship.

That’s where Amazon acquired distribution rights, eventually releasing in on December 23, just in time for the holidays. Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Tim Gray (Variety), Lynette Rice (Entertainment Weekly), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Kaitlin Thomas (Gold Derby), and Anne Thompson (IndieWire) are betting on Pascal to be nominated for Best Drama Actor. It would be the first Emmy bid of his career despite previously appearing on another Emmy-winning fantasy series, “Game of Thrones.” Though no Experts are predicting him to win as of this writing.

Paul Bettany (‘WandaVision’) has a stronger chance than you think to win the Emmy, say these Experts
Usually when you think of Marvel TV shows, you don’t automatically think of awards. But “WandaVision” could be the one to change all of that. This Disney Plus limited series broke the water cooler earlier this year for its genre-bending story about fan-fave “Avengers” Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany). Both actors delivered performances at the top of their games, with Bettany even getting major Emmy buzz for his dual roles as “Soul Vision” (the decent and honorable leading man) and “White Vision” (the emotionless and intimidating antagonist).
Currently 24 of Gold Derby’s Experts have made their Emmy predictions for Best Limited Series Actor, and Bettany comes in third place to win thanks to the support of these two: Joyce Eng (Gold Derby) and Kaitlin Thomas (Gold Derby). The other savvy prognosticators are split between Ethan Hawke (“The Good Lord Bird”), Hugh Grant (“The Undoing”) and Joel Edgerton...
