You can thank Gym Class Heroes for the 2023 Rockefeller tree. This year’s 80-foot Norway spruce was delivered to Manhattan this week straight from an upstate New York property belonging to Matt McGinley, drummer for the recently-reunited rap rock band.
Finger Lakes Times reports that Erik Pauze, Rockefeller Center’s head gardener (what a job title!), is “always scouting” for the next tree to go up at 30 Rock and officially usher in the Christmas season. McGinley and his wife Jackie took pride in their arborie, but they didn’t realize its full potential until Pauze — who’d “had his eyes on the tree for more than a year” — knocked on their door.
But even then, Pauze couldn’t yet confirm nor deny that the McGinleys tree would be going to the Big Apple: “The whole process (of selection) is incredibly secretive,” Jackie said. “Because of that, we didn’t know our tree was selected.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year — unless you live in New York and find yourself having to travel through swarms of tourists in Rockefeller Center. The 91st annual Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 29, with this year’s 80-foot tall, 43-foot wide Norway Spruce arriving courtesy of Gym Class Heroes drummer Matt McGinley and his wife Jackie.
The tree, which weighs around 12 tons, was plucked from the musician’s property in Vestal, New York, and delivered to Rockefeller Center on Nov. 11. It’s...

In previous videos, Gym Class Heroes have shown off their "mutant powers," gone gritty, and even gotten in touch with their inner Lucius Blacks.
But in their upcoming clip for "The Fighter," they're taking a different tack: They're getting real.
"The video is part documentary-style, part-performance [and] it follows the life of John Orozco, a young, up-and-coming, hopefully gold medalist from the Bronx," Gch frontman Travie McCoy told MTV News on the set of the video. "Plus, an awesome, energetic performance from us and Ryan Tedder."
Orozco's story — from a talented Bronx gymnast to training at the U.S. facility in Colorado Springs to perhaps this country's best chance of snagging a gold at the London Olympics — has...

Gym Class Heroes drummer Matt McGinley has promised fans that the band have several more hit singles on the way. The band scored a top five hit on the Us Hot 100 earlier this month with 'Stereo Hearts', featuring the vocals of Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine, but McGinley has insisted that the single's success wasn't a one-off. "I feel like we have a really strong handful of singles that have yet to be released, and that's a position we've never really found ourselves in before," McGinley told Billboard.com. "When we have had radio success in the past it tends to be a fluke," (more)...

In celebration of the Fbr's 15th anniversary, the label's biggest bands rifle through its back catalog.

In 1996, Fueled By Ramen released the now-famous Take-Out Sampler, a cassette compilation that came packaged to look like it was ordered from your neighborhood Chinese restaurant. Last week, they released Cobra Starship's Night Shades, the 130-somethingth album to bear the Fbr name ... and no, it wasn't available on cassette.
Still, that should give you a pretty good idea of just how far the label has come over the course of 15 years. And this week, Fbr will celebrate its ongoing legacy with a pair of shows at New York's Terminal 5 — Wednesday night's show, featuring Paramore, the Swellers, This Providence, the Stereo and fun., will stream live on MTV.com beginning at 7 p.m. Et.
And we here at MTV News are doing our part to aid in the festivities.

It’s one of the biggest categories of the night. Previous winners include Eminem, Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys, 50 Cent, Justin Bieber and Nirvana. We’re talking about the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist, and as usual, this year’s nominees represent some of the hottest new acts in music.
With talent this diverse vying for the Moonman, it’s anyone’s guess who will walk away from the Aug. 28 ceremony victorious. Will voters opt for Big Sean’s smooth R&B hit “My Last” or will they lean toward the harder hip-hop of Tyler, The Creator’s “Yonkers” or Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow”? Will they prefer Kreayshawn's fun and funky “Gucci Gucci” to Foster the People’s fresh rocker “Pumped Up Kicks”?
We have not idea who’s going to take the prize, but you can cast your vote here.

Gym Class Heroes don't exactly have a lot to do in the video for "Stereo Hearts," the first single from their upcoming The Papercut Chronicles II. Instead, it's their shadows that handle most of the heavy lifting.
"The video basically plays on the idea that we're sort of just being casual, hanging out, being ourselves and our shadows get wild and get loose," drummer Matt McGinley told MTV News on the video set. "It's kind of fun. I've always felt like my shadow has been trying to kill me for 28 years."
"That's just me," frontman Travie McCoy laughed, "creeping up on your ass.

Before he was a "Billionaire" with a solo album dropping next week, Travie McCoy was a 17-year-old high school kid bumming around upstate New York feeding his hunger for hip-hop culture. As viewers learned on last weekend's new episode of "When I Was 17" (which also featured testimonials from "American Idol" will Kris Allen and reality TV star Kourtney Kardashian), McCoy spent his high school years looking like "a hot mess." "In my brain, I was sexy," he joked on the show.
McCoy was already experimenting with ink when he was a teen. In the exclusive deleted scene below, Travie explains that his 17-year-old self was employed by the local tattoo parlor.
He said his love for graffiti is what lead him to getting into tattoos. "I've done it on every medium — canvas, public property," he said. "I felt like skin was the next thing to do."

On the episode of "When I Was 17" airing this week, Kourtney Kardashian admits things got hairy when she was behind the wheel, heartthrob Travie McCoy confesses he wasn't sexy at all and Kris Allen apologizes for breaking up with the girl who would become his wife. Whether it was dating or cars — few things are more important in high school — these three were still figuring things out.
"Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star Kourtney recalled one particular accident, in the episode that aired Saturday.
"I remember I was driving down the street, and the car in front of me stopped short, and I stopped really fast and I hit the car," she said. "I thought it was their fault, like, I didn't know accident rules.

When he was 17 years old, Travie McCoy wasn't the long, lean sex machine most know him as today. Quite the opposite, in fact.
"Travie McCoy at 17 [was] crafty, artistic, but not sexy at all," McCoy laughed. "But in my brain, I was sexy."
But pretty much only in his brain. As an oddly proportioned kid growing up in Geneva, New York, McCoy was a gangly mix of dreads, tats, piercings and, of course, more than a little baby fat. It's the kind of thing he and his Gym Class Heroes mates can look back and laugh at now, but at the time, the situation was downright dire, as you can learn on the next episode of "When I Was 17," airing Saturday at 11 a.

He described the former beauty queen on-air, saying, "She's a very smart girl. She's far smarter than I.
