Please don’t stop the music: Anne Fontaine isn’t done with it just yet.
Following “Boléro” — world premiering at International Film Festival Rotterdam — the noted director is developing another melodic project.
“It’s about a character who was a star at 10 years old. He had a ‘magic’ voice, but then he suddenly lost it. Years later, he is ready to come back. It’s a comedy, based on something real,” she says. Admitting that this time, she will swap classical compositions for popular tunes.
“I like songs: they are in our blood. We hear them and remember we lost a lover when they were playing. They mark our lives. There will be so much music [in this film]. And all these amazing voices, including a real-life singer making her film debut.”
New project will combine “cruelty and humor.”
“Our destiny might be cruel, but we are still able to laugh about it.

Dick Fontaine and Pat Hartley’s documentary I Heard It Through the Grapevine follows James Baldwin on a journey across America as he recounts his experiences of the civil rights movement. He travels to Birmingham, where white supremacists exploded or planted roughly 50 bombs during the 1950s and ’60s, and to Selma, where Martin Luther King Jr. led the march to Montgomery in 1965, painting a vivid picture of life in the South as it violently resisted desegregation. Then Baldwin journeys back up North to Newark, where riots raged for days after a Black man was assaulted by the police. At each stop, Baldwin is left to reflect on how much things have changed and how much they have stayed the same.
More than 40 years after its original release, the documentary benefits from a special effect that hasn’t lost an ounce of power or authenticity in the intervening decades: Baldwin himself.

Sandra Hüller, who is an awards contender with “The Zone of Interest” and “Anatomy of a Fall,” will be one of the guest speakers taking part in the International Film Festival Rotterdam’s Talks program later this month.
In her talk, Hüller will “delve into her acting trajectory, discussing the highlights of her career, but also lesser-known performances – including work in the theater and other arts,” the festival said. She will talk about her approach to acting and character with an emphasis on “The Zone of Interest,” playing at this year’s festival, and the different methods of the directors she has collaborated with through the years.
The program also includes a talk by Italian filmmaker Marco Bellocchio, who comes to IFFR with his latest examination of Italian history, “Rapito.” In this wide-ranging talk, Bellocchio will “reveal his passion as a filmmaker and his emotional connection to all stages of the filmmaking process.

Guillermo del Toro doesn’t hold back about his love for his favorite movies. If you’ve spent any time on his Twitter feed over the years, you’ve likely seen him praise Stanley Donen’s use of the color red throughout the late director’s body of work, and hail everything from William Wellman’s 1931 film “Other Men’s Women” to David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” from 2022. The man has wide-ranging taste, and a deep awareness of cinematic history that’s informed his own films.

Whoopi Goldberg came to Hasan Minhaj’s defense following claims that some of the jokes in his stand-ups are embellished.
During a segment on The View Monday, Goldberg and her fellow co-hosts took a moment to discuss Minhaj exaggerating things that have happened to him at times for the sake of the joke.
“That’s what we do,” Goldberg said of the role of comedians. “That’s what we do. We tell stories, and we embellish them.”
Goldberg then recalled a time when a reporter called to fact-check one of her stand-ups in which she said she had a degree from New York University. She told the reporter she did not have a degree from the university and never said she did, before realizing he was referring to one of her stand-up characters, Fontaine.

The hosts of “The View” were a bit stunned on Monday after learning about the criticisms comedian Hasan Minhaj faces for admitting to over-exaggerating stories in his stand-up act. Moderator Whoopi Goldberg was particularly bothered by the blowback, noting that, as a comedian herself, “That’s what we do!”
In an exposé published by The New Yorker on Friday, Minhaj was called out for fabricating and/or embellishing stories in his stand-up act, but the comedian defended his actions, saying, “Every story in my style is built around a seed of truth.”
In a statement to TheWrap, Minhaj noted that “all my standup stories are based on events that happened to me.” And, according to Goldberg on Monday’s episode of “The View,” that’s not uncommon at all.

In a parallel reality, we got a "Star Trek" musical earlier than the latest "Strange New Worlds" episode — much earlier. Ira Steven Behr, showrunner for "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," discussed some foiled plans for that show in a 2018 interview with GeekTown. Behr revealed that one of his writers wanted to make a musical episode of "Deep Space Nine." Which writer? Ronald D. Moore.
If you're a Trekkie, you've probably heard that name before; Moore was a prolific writer on both "The Next Generation" and "Deep Space Nine." Moore was also an advocate for breaking formulas; he left "Star Trek: Voyager" after writing two episodes because of what he saw as a sterile creative environment. He went on to create the 2003 remake of "Battlestar Galactica" and made it into a show that reflected his problems with what "Star Trek" became. A musical episode is the sort of brave new frontier that sounds up his alley.

Teyonah Parris has stepped into plenty of shoes in her career — from “Dear White People” and “Mad Men” to “If Beale Street Could Talk” and, more recently, as Marvel superhero Monica Rambeau. But no shoes quite compare to the mustard yellow, thigh-high boots and chaps she wore as Yo-Yo in Netflix’s new pulpy conspiracy caper “They Cloned Tyrone.”
“The minute I put on all those elements, I felt Yo-Yo,” Parris told Variety at a press junket for the film in late June.
Parris laughed brightly as she recalls slipping into the role — a working girl who teams up with Fontaine (John Boyega), a local dope boy, and her pimp, Slick Charles (Jamie Foxx), to expose a government conspiracy that touches every corner of their community, from the barbershop and the beauty salon to the local fried chicken joint.

At first glance, They Cloned Tyrone seems to find John Boyega on well-trodden ground. For the first 20 minutes of the Netflix release, Boyega’s face never changes from a hardened scowl as his character Fontaine goes through his day. Fontaine’s actions will seem familiar to anyone who’s heard an “urban” narrative, as Hollywood once often called them; Tyrone buys a 40 and some scratch-offs, he beats up a competitor on his corner, and he threatens a pimp who owes him money.
More than the generic constraints of Fontaine’s day, however, viewers may recognize elements of Boyega’s breakout character from more than a decade ago now in the unrepentant drug dealer he plays in Tyrone. Moviegoers first met Boyega as Moses in the British science-fiction comedy Attack the Block (2011), a film directed by Joe Cornish. Spoiler alert: This article breaks down the plot and characters in “They Cloned Tyrone.”
John Boyega got his first opportunity to play multiple roles in one project with “They Cloned Tyrone,” a moment the British actor says had him in his “Eddie Murphy bag.”
“They Cloned Tyrone,” co-written by Juel Taylor and his writing partner Tony Rettenmaier, was the first time Taylor got to sit in the director’s chair for a feature film. The movie also provided Boyega with a career first of his own: the opportunity to play different characters in a sole project.
“It was fun, [I ] obviously approached all of them as individuals, and just made sure you’re consistently speaking to your director, so you don’t get them twisted,” Boyega said, whose character in film, Fontaine, has been cloned several times by the government.

From the day we’re born, we’re fed these preconceived notions about everything—gender, class, economy, you name it. And most of us cling to these conventional ideas and stubbornly refuse to step outside of them. Humans are born brainwashed, and even though we’re gifted with consciousness, creativity, and a unique thought process in each individual, instead of questioning the norms, most of us get even more attached to them. External forces like consumerism and capitalism are somehow to blame for it, as even the food we eat and the face cream we slather on somehow manage to hypnotize us. They enchant us with their clever advertising, and we readily fall for it, blinded by their seemingly harmless effectiveness. Who needs free will when we can be happily trapped in this circus of labyrinthine manipulation?

In America today, no one has a lock on conspiracy theory. It has become the air we breathe, the Kool-Aid we drink, the rabbit-hole ideology that defines too many of us. Yet conspiracy theories come in different shapes and sizes. Many are false, some are true. Many are bat-house crazy, some are more than plausible. All, in one way or another, work as metaphors: for the forces that collude in hiding things from us, for the sinister tantalizing truth that we aren’t allowed to see.
“They Cloned Tyrone” is a slow-burn inner-city sci-fi nightmare thriller, one that plays off the spirit of conspiracy theory that has often thrived — with justification — within Black culture. The Tuskegee experiment was a conspiracy that happened; its horrific impact on the hearts and minds of African-Americans is beyond measure. And in the 1970s, the belief that the CIA, linked by the war in Vietnam...

Netflix's "They Cloned Tyrone" has us seeing double, triple, and even quadruple in the freaky conspiracy-theory film. They Cloned Tyrone, the latest mystery thriller on Netflix by Jule Taylor, blends elements from Jordan Peele’s Us, Boots Riley’s Sorry to Bother You, and the Amazon series “I’m Virgo.” It shares a similar vibe with Black Mirror, delving into how the advancement of technology started to take control of the human mind, leading humanity either to prosperity or to its ultimate downfall. They Cloned Tyrone also provides a powerful social commentary on racism, shedding light on the complicated struggles faced by people of color in society. They have endured torment for years, which has left them with vulnerabilities and insecurities about their own existence. They Cloned Tyrone explores such darkness and represents this existential crisis through its protagonist, Fontaine, who discovers multiple clones of himself worldwide. This leads him to wonder who is responsible for this troubling situation.

What happens when you mix wild conspiracy theories, slick-talking characters, and the retro feel of the Blaxploitation era into one sweeping film? Well, you get the time-defying, genre-bending adventure "They Cloned Tyrone" - which stars John Boyega, Jamie Foxx, and Teyonah Parris as an oddball trio in Juel Taylor's risky directorial debut. The sci-fi comedy's freaky plot works to its advantage, though, as it takes viewers on a journey unlike anything you'd ever expect.

Juel Taylor’s They Cloned Tyrone is a satirical science-fiction story styled as a Blaxploitation film. Set in the gritty world of The Glen, this odd-throuple comedy stars John Boyega as Fontaine, a small-time drug dealer whose days play out in the same dreary cycle of events: He stumbles out of bed, does a little business, hits the local liquor store, and does whatever he has to do to keep his rivals in check and make sure his customers pay on time.
There’s a grainy quality to the way that Taylor’s feature-length directorial debut has been shot that allows it to stand apart from just about every other Netflix original film. It’s also in the way that the sickly yellow and green lights of the environments that barely brighten the seedy motel rooms and dilapidated homes always seem as if they’re being glimpsed through a fog.

Colin Farrell might have appeared in Matt Reeves' "The Batman" for just a few scenes -- he had less than 10 minutes of screentime -- but the actor underwent a complete transformation to play Oswald "Oz" Cobblepot, aka The Penguin. Each day prior to filming, Farrell spent four hours in the makeup chair; that's how elaborate the prosthetics were.
When we last saw the DC Comics mobster at the end of "The Batman," he was looking over the flooded, chaos-ridden city of Gotham from a window, which seemed to suggest the supervillain would be in the running to take over the throne of the city's dangerous underworld. After all, someone has to fill the void now that his old boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro) is gone.
