It’s not uncommon for high-profile Hollywood relationships to go array, with one major example being Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s ugly split-up, who parted ways after a decade-long relationship. But unlike most Hollywood split-ups, Golden Globe winner Ali Wong had a quite healthy divorce from her husband of eight years, Justin Hakuta.
Despite parting ways in 2022, there doesn’t seem to be any bad blood between the two, as the actress even took a moment to thank her ex-husband after scoring her first Golden Globes win.

Earlier this year, Ali Wong created history by becoming the first woman of Asian descent to win a Golden Globe for Best Female Actor In A Limited Series, thanks to her performance in Beef. In her acceptance speech, the comedian took a moment to thank her ex-husband Justin Hakuta.

The feud between Steven Yeun and Ali Wong's road-raging characters in Netflix comedy-drama "Beef" was hot enough to win both actors a Golden Globe each, for Best Actor and Best Actress in a limited series, alongside a third win for Best Miniseries or TV Film. Wong in particular made history with her win, becoming the first actress of Asian descent to win in the category.
"Beef" kicks off with a close encounter between the cars of struggling contractor Danny Cho (Yeun) and wealthy entrepreneur Amy Lau (Wong). Since both are brimming with suppressed rage over various problems in their lives, the near-miss triggers excessive horn-honking, an uncalled-for middle finger, and ultimately a furious car chase. But that battle is only the start of the war as Danny and Amy both become obsessed with their newfound nemeses, kicking off a grudge-match that escalates wildly out of control.

Lee Sung Jin is ready to cook up more Beef.
Backstages at the Golden Globes on Sunday night, the hit Netflix show’s creator revealed that more seasons was always the plan, even if it has heretofore been discussed as a limited series, including tonight as it won the prize for Best Limited Series, Anthology Series, Made for Television Movie.
“We always pitched the season to buyers as an anthology series. There was always going to be new characters,” Jin explained. “Whether it stays limited or turns as an anthology or we continue existing, that’s really up to Netflix. But whatever they decide, I’m definitely ready.”
Jin went on to say that he feels “very fortunate” to be a writer. “There’s so many stories that I still want to write about,” he reflected, “so when they let me know, I’m sure you all will know, as well.

The best TV shows of 2023 have something odd in common: before they happened, most of them felt impossible. On paper, the idea of a complex and satirical retelling of Edgar Allan Poe's greatest hits sounds strange, as does a real-life "Truman Show" style reality experiment built around one of America's most tedious pastimes. Before this year, we had no reason to think that our favorite cable drama would blow up its entire premise three episodes into its final season, or that the TV adaptation of a near-perfect video game would in some ways prove better than the original.
TV can and should elicit all sorts of responses from viewers, but by virtue of its continuous format, it's especially well-equipped to leave us surprised. With seasons' worth of watercooler conversations under our belts, viewers become confident prognosticators sure we know exactly where our favorite shows are headed, but some of...

The Primetime Emmys are not necessarily known for honoring projects featuring casts that are primarily minority/people of color. The TV academy has never, for instance, given the Best Drama Series trophy to such a show. The statuette for Best Comedy Series has been won by a series featuring a largely minority cast precisely once: “The Cosby Show” in 1985. But the category of top limited/anthology/miniseries has paid golden tribute to programs with mostly minority casts a handful of times before, helping give Netflix’s “Beef” with its predominantly Asian American lineup a genuine shot to take home the biggest prize.

Jason Segel and Ali Wong say comedy is the best way to work through tragedy.
The stars are part of two of Apple TV+’s biggest series on the platform: “Shrinking” and “Beef” – which both manage to blend comedy and drama to effectively tell their stories.
It’s a strategy that Segel has been trying to perfect throughout his career, from his early days on “Freaks and Geeks”.
“I first saw [Segel] on ‘Freaks and Geeks’ on the VHS tapes that my boyfriend at the time’s father bought on eBay,” Wong recalled in an interview with Variety.

Comedian Bobby Lee is suing Wondery for breach of contract after the audio company allegedly canceled a multiyear ad sales and distribution deal for his podcast, TigerBelly, which he co-hosts with Khalyla Kuhn.
The complaint, filed in Los Angeles on Thursday on behalf of Lee’s TigerBelly company, alleges that Wondery was “under pressure to cut expenses and roll back its financial commitments” in anticipation of a podcast market slowdown in 2023, leading the company to terminate its 39-month deal with the TigerBelly podcast in early April.
The deal, which TigerBelly and Wondery reached in December 2022, was in exchange for “multimillion-dollar financial guarantees that reflected the widespread success and popularity of [the podcast],” the complaint said.
In the termination notice sent to TigerBelly, Wondery also allegedly cited a “morals clause” and pointed to a 2013 story that Lee told — and later said was made up for shock value — about paying for “a young-looking sex...

Netflix’s Beef displaced The Night Agent as the top overall streaming title for the week of April 10-16.
Beef, starring Ali Wong and Steven Yeun, drew 1.59 billion minutes of viewing time for the week, up 65 percent from its premiere week. The series also sparked controversy when past remarks about sexual assault by co-star David Choe resurfaced. Choe later said he made up the story, and Wong and Yeun said in an April 21 statement that they “do not condone this story in any way” while adding they have seen Choe seek support “to better himself and learn from his mistakes.”
The Night Agent (1.17 billion minutes) slipped to second but recorded its fourth straight week over the billion-minute mark. Love Is Blind (1.09 billion) and Disney+’s The Mandalorian (1.03 billion) also topped a billion minutes.
Netflix’s Florida Man was the highest charting premiere for the week with 649 million minutes of watch time.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we reassess the unsettled limited series races.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! If the first Monday in May is reserved for the Met Gala, I can only assume the first Friday in May is all about the 2023 limited series Emmy race. That classification is maybe the most chaotic of the main Emmys races this year — we’re long past the days of “The Queen’s Gambit” and “Mare of Easttown.” At the moment, according to our odds, “Monster,” “Black Bird,” “Beef,” “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” “White House Plumbers” and “Daisy Jones & the Six” make up the expected list of limited series nominees. Netflix’s dark comedy “Beef” made its debut on Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings in the No. 4 position with 962 million minutes watched. This measurement was taken during the April 3-9 viewing window, and “Beef” premiered on April 6, meaning the series achieved that viewership in its first four days of availability.
Starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, the first season of “Beef” is 10 episodes long. The series was originally billed as a comedy, but Variety exclusively reported it would campaign for Emmys in the limited series category. There’s still a chance the project will return, as creator Lee Sung Jin has said he has ideas for as many as three seasons. It should be noted, though, that “Beef” has since become embroiled in a scandal surrounding supporting actor David Choe and a story he told in a 2014 podcast about committing rape, which he and later his collaborators said was “fabricated.

Ian McKellen, David Mitchell, and Neil Gaiman are among the celebrities to have had their “blue ticks” reinstated on Twitter.
It has only been days since stars including Ricky Gervais and Richard Osman were reacting to having their Twitter “blue ticks” removed and already many of them have had the verification badge restored.
Earlier this week, Twitter CEO Elon Musk finally removed the “legacy verified” marks on celebrity accounts. Even high-profile artists such as Beyoncé had their ticks revoked.
Users now have to pay a monthly fee in order to be “verified” on the social media platform.
Days later, on Sunday (23 April), many celebrities were confused to see that their ticks had, in fact, been reinstated.
Many rushed to Twitter to clarify that they had not paid for the blue tick.

Beef is one of the best Netflix shows in recent memory. The show takes a very simple premise and expands on it to create a complex character study of two people from different backgrounds mired in their own existential crises. Steven Yeun and Ali Wong are the stars of Beef’s first season, but its showrunner Lee Sung Jin already has ideas for where the series could go with different people in the spotlight.
‘Beef’ is a darkly delicious dramedy about miserable people
Beef ignites when Danny Cho (Yeun) nearly gets in a car accident with Amy Lau (Wong) in the parking lot of a home improvement store. For reasons the characters spend most of the season trying to unpack, the situation escalates into an intense road rage incident that neither party can move on from.

Universal/Illumination’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has broken yet another box office record for animation with an estimated $58 million in its third weekend.
Just like last weekend, “Mario” has posted the highest total ever seen for an animated film in its third weekend and, at the moment, the seventh highest third weekend for any film. Given how the last two weekends have seen the film’s estimates rise as the weekend goes on, there’s still a chance that this $58 million estimate could rise to $60 million or higher.
Currently, Universal estimates that “Super Mario Bros.” will pass the $850 million mark worldwide by the end of the weekend, putting it in position in this coming week to pass the $939 million global total of “Minions: The Rise of Gru” to become the highest grossing animated film of the post-shutdown era. “Mario” has already passed “Rise of Gru” at the domestic box office,...

Dick Van Dyke will make his soap opera debut on Days Of Our Lives.
The 97-year-old is set to appear as a guest star on a forthcoming episode of the long-running series.
Van Dyke told Access Hollywood that the role came about after he met Days Of Our Lives star Drake Hogestyn at the gym and asked him for a part on the show.
“I used to kid him, ‘Don’t you have any parts for old people? Come on, give me one.’ And he took me seriously and got me a part!” he told the outlet in a video interview.
The episode – which will air in autumn – Van Dyke will play a man with amnesia, appearing in a scene with cast members Hogestyn and Deidre Hall.
During the Access Hollywood segment, Carol Burnett offered Van Dyke some advice. Burnett previously had a recurring role on All My Children in the Eighties.

David Choe, the star of Netflix’s new hit series “Beef,” is an artist and an actor. But his performance in the series isn’t what has people talking — it’s an admission he made back in 2014 detailing how he sexually assaulted a masseuse, which he later said he made up and called “bad storytelling.” Critics have labeled him a rapist and have called for a boycott of the show.
Here’s everything to know about David Choe.
Who is David Choe?
Born in Los Angeles on April 21, 1976, Choe spent most of his upbringing raised by his Korean immigrant parents in the Koreatown neighborhood. During his teens, he became a spray paint artist, which ultimately led to his full-scale career as a painter, mural artist and art creative. After a short stint attending California College of the Arts and Crafts in Oakland, he went on to self-publish a graphic novel called “Slow Jams,...

Meghan McCain has spoken out about her “disastrous” time on The View in a searing column.
The former chat show host left the show in July 2021 after four seasons of presenting alongside co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin.
Months later, she disclosed in her book Bad Republican, the reason she left was due to an on-air tussle with Behar, which left her in tears.
McCain’s since been vocal about her “toxic” experience, but she’s decided to make further claims in a new column for The Daily Mail, published on Friday (21 April).
“I imagine being a former co-host of ABC News’ The View feels much like having a very public, very nasty breakup with an infamous ex-boyfriend,” she began.
“Everyone knows it ended in complete disaster. And absolutely everyone wants to talk about it.”

Ali Wong and Steven Yeun's standout performance in Netflix's "Beef" has many wondering if there will be a season two. The show, which follows the back and forth between a defeated contractor named Danny (Yeun) and a wealthy, overworked mom named Amy (Wong) after a road rage incident, ends with Wong and Yeun's characters basically destroying each other's lives. In the final moments of the season, we see Danny in the hospital fighting for his life after being shot by Amy's husband, George (Joseph Lee). We also witness a glimmer of empathy from Amy as she lies in bed next to Danny after losing everything.
"Beef" was initially billed as a miniseries, and creator Lee Sung Jin told Rolling Stone in April that he wanted the show "to have a conclusive feel just in case." He added, "But there are a lot of ideas on my end to keep this story going.

Marques Houston is being criticised for saying that women his age often come with “baggage or kids”.
The 41-year-old singer and actor, who is married to 22-year-old Miya Dickey, was attempting to explain why he preferred to date women who were younger than him.
“A red flag to me [was] always with a woman that had a kid,” he told Page Six. “Nothing against single women, but single mothers with children are a red flag for me.
“I tip my hat and respect women that are raising children on their own,” he added. “But when I grew up, I never really wanted to have kids.
“I would talk to my dad a lot, and he would always tell me to have your own kids because you never know what the baby daddy’s are about. So if you’re gonna have kids, make sure it is with a woman that never had kids.

Netflix CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters celebrated the success of the streamer’s latest hit series “Beef” but skipped over controversy surrounding cast member David Choe’s involvement.
The executives touted the show’s recent critical and fan acclaim during the company’s first quarter earnings interview Tuesday but didn’t acknowledge the building outrage among viewers that started after a 2014 video of Choe resurfaced on social media in which he said he forced himself on a masseuse.
“That’s new this quarter and it has kicked off and it’s off to a tremendous start,” Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos said of the show. “Again another example of critical acclaim, likely to do well awards season we hope, but loved by fans.”
