Television comedies have come a long way from the multi-camera sitcoms of the 1950s. The streaming era has given writers the ability to explore different ways to tell their stories beyond the traditional structure of network comedies. Shows like The Bear, Barry, Russian Doll, WandaVision, and Ted Lasso blur the lines between drama and comedy with their runtimes and plotlines and show us how necessary it is for TV to be a flexible and adaptable artform. But for all of the great shows that this era of television has given us, the push for shows to be shorter and more bingeable has also made studios lose sight of what has been drawing people to comedies for decades.
Even in the streaming era, network comedies can regularly be found in the trending section on streaming services, and these companies know that people are drawn to these longer comedy series. When New Girl...

It’s only been announced for a few hours, and it’s already controversial.
A Harry Potter TV series was greenlit by Max (formerly HBO Max) that will remake J.K. Rowling’s beloved bestselling fantasy novels into a “faithful” long-form series to roll out over a period of 10 years. The ambitious project will cast new leads and include far more detail from the seven novels, which were often rather truncated in their previous adaptations into Warner Bros. feature films, which launched with 2001’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
Except, you know, there’s the whole divisive matter of Rowling herself.
Max could not make a series without a deal with the author, who still holds considerable control over the filmic rights to her stories. Rowling will be involved with the new series as an executive producer, though she is not expected to have day-to-day control or contribute to the writing.

It’s official: A reboot of “Harry Potter” in the form of a TV series is coming to the new Max streaming service, and J.K. Rowling is onboard to executive produce. And, given how vocal she’s become against transgender people, many fans are cursing her involvement, and this series.
The announcement came during the unveiling of the renamed streaming service on Wednesday, as the series was revealed to be at least a decade-long commitment. Following the presentation, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content Casey Bloys told press that Rowling’s presence and input will indeed be significant.
“She will be involved. She’s an executive producer on the show,” he said. “And I think her insights are going to be incredibly helpful on that. And remember, we’re in the Potter business. You know, the TV show is new, and we’re excited about it. But we...

While it would be an overstatement to claim that the franchise is in trouble, few would argue that Star Wars is currently at its height. The excitement generated by the first season of The Mandalorian gave way to a mixed response to the lore-heavy second season and to the relatively unpopular The Book of Boba Fett. On the cinematic side of things, both the controversial The Last Jedi and the disappointing The Rise of Skywalker did well at the box office, but no new film is in production yet (and announced projects like Rogue Squadron have been shelved). Animated series such as The Bad Batch certainly continue to do well, and fans largely seemed to enjoy the live-action Obi-Wan Kenobi.
For many, the problem boils down to a matter of focus. Should Star Wars follow the path set by the nine main films and continue to be about the Skywalker family?...

Fantasy fans have barely had the chance to catch their breath after the "House of the Dragon" premiere took viewers back to Westeros for the first time in years. Now, a different world of magic is about to make a comeback, with "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power." The new Prime Video series is set to debut September 2, 2022, and thanks to the specifics of the rights deal secured by Amazon Studios, it will pull not from J.R.R. Tolkein's "Lord of the Rings" books, but from lesser-known Middle-earth history texts, like the books' appendices.
"The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" has a lot riding on its success: the series reportedly has a budget of over 400 million for its first season, which would make it the most expensive TV show ever made. Those big numbers could translate to great storytelling and huge success, or,...

When you think of the shows that have aired on The CW, you likely think of Supernatural, The Flash, Riverdale, The Vampire Diaries, and more, all shows which seemed aimed at a teenage/twenty-something audience. It turns out that the age of the average viewer of The CW is a hell of a lot older than you would have thought.

During a call with analysts today, executives from Nexstar Media Group revealed how they hope to turn the CW into more of a cost-conscious broadcast network that appeals to a broader audience. Turns out the CW is a lot closer to that goal than anyone might have imagined.
The reality, according to Nexstar President and COO Tom Carter, is that the average CW viewer is 58 years old — which he thinks is why the broadcast network is also the lowest-rated among all five. Since the CW is home to such teen faves as Riverdale, All American and The Flash, news of its 50-something appeal elicited more than a few laughs online.
“I would have laughed if the average age was 40,” wrote Mike Royce, the former EP on One Day at a Time, on Twitter. “58 is true comic genius.”

Ever since the merger of Warner Bros. and Discovery was finalized in April 2022, there’s been speculation as to if and how the companies’ respective streaming services, HBO Max and Discovery+ would coexist. Between the unceremonious cancelation of the upcoming HBO Max original movie Batgirl and the quiet removal of at least six HBO Max exclusive movies this week, people have been rightly skeptical of the direction Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav is taking the company. While the Warner Bros. Discovery Q2 earnings call on Aug. 4 may not have answered all of our looming questions regarding the future of HBO Max and its extensive library of beloved movies and TV shows, we now have a somewhat better idea of what the company’s plans are.
For starters, HBO Max and Discovery+ will officially become one streaming service that is scheduled to launch in the U.S. in summer 2023. The...

The Los Angeles premiere of Sony’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” has officially wrapped and the first reactions to the MCU’s latest entry are out in the wild. Official reviews and social media responses are beginning to pour in, with many offering euphoric praise for the multiverse mash-up featuring Tom Holland’s friendly neighborhood superhero.
Director Jon Watts returns for “No Way Home” after directing previous “Spider-Man” entries “Homecoming” and “Far From Home.” The newest installment picks up after Spider-Man’s identity as Peter Parker has been revealed to the world. Peter turns to Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), who casts a spell to make the world forget that he’s the web-slinger, but the enchantment goes awry and breaks open the multiverse. The MCU is invaded by “Spider-Man” villains from alternate realities, including Dr. Otto Octavius (Alfred Molina), Electro (Jamie Foxx) and the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe). Zendaya, Jacob Batalon,...

There’s something strange in the neighborhood — specifically, if you ask many fans of the 80s comedy classic “Ghostbusters,” the lack of humor in the new “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” trailer. Some are ripping the reboot’s relatively serious tone as “bizarre” while others are questioning why a film in which “that’s a big twinkie” is uttered is held in such high regard in the first place.
“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” came back to haunt us Tuesday, dropping a new trailer featuring more insight into the movie’s plot, hints at some of its nostalgic cameos and an unexpectedly reverent attitude toward its silly, sarcastic source material. Because, as previously mentioned, the original “Ghostbusters” is generally perceived as a comedy — but the trailers for “Afterlife” have so far made this sequel seem more like a drama.

Christopher Nolan came out firing on Monday evening against Warner Bros’ decision to release all of its theatrical films scheduled for 2021 on HBO Max on the same day they’re slated to hit theaters. But given the current situation in the United States — the Covid-19 pandemic is currently at its peak here, and could continue to get worse before the vaccine is available — a lot of folks aren’t too concerned about the sanctity of the theatrical moviegoing experience right now.
“In 2021, they’ve got some of the top filmmakers in the world, they’ve got some of the biggest stars in the world who worked for years in some cases on these projects very close to their hearts that are meant to be big-screen experiences,” Nolan said in a statement railing against the move by Warner BRos and HBO Max.

Fans of Netflix’s “The Haunting of Bly Manor” just realized that Amelie Bea Smith, the nine-year-old actress who voices Flora on the bone-chilling series, also lends her voice to another pop-culture-craze — “Peppa Pig.”
Unlike “Bly Manor,” this one is specifically meant for children to watch, and it definitely doesn’t involve any faceless ladies who steal children and live at the bottom of lakes.
Though “Peppa Pig” has been on the air longer than Smith has been alive, the British child actress took over the gig earlier this year. Previous voices of Peppa have been done by Harley Bird, Cecily Bloom, and original actress Lily Snowden-Fine. According to IMDb, Smith has completed 13 episodes so far this year.

Spider-Man 3 won’t be part of the McU. Universal Pictures left the industry in a state of wonder at CinemaCon when it announced “digital fur technology” was being used to turn the actors in Tom Hooper’s “Cats” musical adaptation into felines. What exactly would Idris Elba, Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson, and Taylor Swift look like with digital fur added to their faces and bodies? That answer finally arrived with the debut of the “Cats” official trailer, and the reactions from film critics and journalists is overwhelming, to say the least.
“Cats” is based on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s long-running West End and Broadway musical of the same name. The story is set during a single night and follows a group of homeless cats called the Jellicles as they decide which cat will ascend to a place called the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. The musical was based on a collection of short stories written by T.S. Eliot.

Last season in TV, there was a fun little crossover between The Flash and Supergirl. While the episode itself was of little to no consequence, it was a lot of fun for those who enjoyed the light tone. I couldn't count the number of comments online, however, that expressed how much of a missed opportunity it was. Both Grant Gustin and Melissa Benoit are proud members of the Glee alumni, and such, they have vocal talent to support their actings chops.
With those facts in mind, why in the world didn't showrunner Greg Berlanti turn the crossover into one giant musical (I'm mostly joking here, but you see where this is going)? Well, that fact was not lost on them, and now that Supergirl and The Flash are currently on the same network, they've chosen this as the perfect opportunity to have a two-part musical crossover between the two characters.

Let's be honest, much of the pleasure of being a part of the Game of Thrones fan community is the opportunity to theorize en masse. Someone will start a thread and others pick it up and, in a way, it's like creating an enormous lore-centric Mad Lib together. Sansa Stark has had one of the most significant character arcs of this season, so it's natural for fans to focus on what's next for her. Some feel that she may be primed to take the place of a certain character from the books, becoming the show's version of Lady Stoneheart. Others, our own Donna Dickens included, are now seeing a path that leads to a marriage between Sansa and Jon Snow in order for them to fully hold the North. And there are those who believe that Sansa...

Not that this should really come as much of a surprise, but the first reactions to Avengers: Age of Ultron have surfaced tonight and as expected, they’re extremely positive. While Marvel is killing it with their cinematic universe, I think it's safe to say DC is doing fairly well with their television universe. Fox recently screened the pilot episode of their new Batman prequel series Gotham, and the reactions of the lucky few who got to see it were extremely positive! It looks as though this highly anticipated show is actually going to live up to the hype!
The trailer that was released for this series was incredible. It was so good it gave me the goosebumps. It sounds like that trailer doesn't even do the series justice.
Gotham comes from the mind of Bruno Heller (Rome, The Mentalist), and it tells the story of Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and the rise of Gotham's villains and heroes. So here is what people are saying:
Really dug the pilot of Fox's superhero origin story Gotham. Solid crime drama with many tantalizing hints of the mythology to come.

I’m not going to lie, I was a bit worried before reading the first reactions to Fox’s new Batman prequel series, Gotham. I’m incredibly excited for the show, and seriously hope that it lives up to its potential. However, one could easily see where the series could go horribly, horribly wrong, and many were left skeptical by its first trailer.
Sure, it will be great to see a Batman show on television, but the series runs the risk of falling into typical prequel tropes, and spending too much time winking at the audience instead of telling good stories that fully utilize the Gotham-before-Batman concept.
