With Grand Theft Auto (GTA) Online’s latest update comes yet another affirmation of the music and video games industries’ growing partnership, as the two businesses continue to intertwine. On Tuesday (July 20th), GTA developer Rockstar Games announced that it’s soundtracking the update with music entirely from its own record label, CircoLoco Records.
Rockstar Games co-founded CircoLoco Records with eponymous Ibiza club culture brand CircoLoco in May, and the label released the compilation album Monday Dreamin’ in early July following four EP drops in June. Now, Rockstar is injecting...

Video game developer Rockstar Games and Ibiza club culture icon CircoLoco announced Monday the launch of new independent record label CircoLoco Records.

Seven years after its launch, Grand Theft Auto, via the game’s new Cayo Perico Heist update, has received its most substantial musical bump to date — reflecting the growing foothold that video games have on a music industry intent on finding digital revenue opportunities.
The entire list of musical add-ons in this update is extensive. In the game’s most interactive music feature, three well-known DJs — Moodymann, Palms Trax and DJ collective Keinemusik — are now residents at The Music Locker, GTA Online’s virtual nightclub where players can hang out.

The Guild of Music Supervisors (Gms) hosted its 5th annual “State of Music in Media” conference on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Los Angeles Film School. Featuring a wide array of panel discussions on all manner of issues related to music in film, television and advertising, the confab drew top composers, music supervisors, licensing and clearance executives as well as academics to a day’s worth of programming.
The conference was followed by a performance by Daniel Lanois, who scored the game “Red Dead Redemption 2.” The noted producer participated in a Q&a earlier in the day with Rockstar Games’ Ivan Pavlovich.
The Guild, founded in 2010, is turning a decade old, and in that time, the business of music for screens has only grown as more content creators and distributors churn out projects at an unprecedented rate.

As the profile of music supervision has risen over the past decade, so has the growth of the Guild of Music Supervisors, which hands out its annual awards in 18 categories on Feb. 13 at the Ace Theatre in downtown Los Angeles. There are few contemporary working artists who maintain a more idiosyncratic release schedule than D’Angelo. He’s famous for tinkering and revising his music, eating up years and hundreds of reels of analog tape on his way to an eventual album. It took him 14 years to follow up 2000’s smash hit Voodoo with his most recent album, Black Messiah. In that time, three U.S. presidents occupied the White House, Facebook was invented, and D’Angelo released precisely zero songs.
So it was a surprise when a new D’Angelo track titled “May I?...

It’s the season for year-end lists, but one of 2018’s biggest albums is missing from nearly every major publication’s ranking: The soundtrack to Red Dead Redemption 2. Less than two weeks after the blockbuster video game’s release, Rockstar Games was estimated to have shipped 17 million copies to stores around the world. The company declined to provide more updates on the game’s sales numbers, but that initially reported total easily exceeds the numbers of chart-toppers like Drake’s Scorpion. And not only did millions upon millions of people...

For four days earlier this year the Black Madonna vanished, slipping away between sets at Coachella and an appearance at Guadalajara club Bar Americas. In the turmoil and chaos of a life packed with travel, Facebook posts and Instagram photos, one of the most influential and respected DJs currently on the scene managed a disappearing act amid a 150-show-a-year calendar.
Typically, the Black Madonna (born Marea Stamper) spends her nights performing at different clubs, bars, record shops, venues weaving provocative music as thick as shag carpeting from threads of acid...

Rockstar’s open-world franchise has always been renowned for its quirky, satirical and downright entertaining soundtracks. From libellous talk shows to great music, the company has a knack for expanding their vast worlds through the aural medium. And for Grand Theft Auto V, that trend is set to continue, after it was revealed that the fifth numerical entry in the prestigious series will feature 15 radio stations, two dedicated radio talk shows and 240 licensed songs, which accumulates to “somewhere in the proximity of 20 movies’ worth of score.”
Acting as the soundtrack’s supervisor, here’s what Ivan Pavlovich spoke of in his interview with Rolling Stone:
“For this game, which is set in our version of modern-day Los Angeles, what was important for us was to capture that feeling of La and California. We approached the radio stations as the musical soundscape [you experience] as you fly into La. One of the things...

Grand Theft Auto is famous for many reasons, quite a few of which are usually controversial. Alongside the adult content and excellent open-world play is the attention to detail Rockstar always crams into the world, and a big part of this is the music.
GTA games traditionally feature an eclectic mix of licensed music, which is dispersed into a number of fictional in-game radio stations, and GTA V will be no different. 240 licensed songs will be spread over 15 radio stations, and two talk radio channels, another staple of the series, will also be included. However, that's not the end of GTA V's musical muscle, and this instalment will also feature an original score.
