As movies and TV shows have become the dominant mode of superhero storytelling, some comic writers have crossed mediums with the characters they pen. Allan Heinberg wrote a brief run on "Wonder Woman" and years later wrote the screenplay for the 2017 "Wonder Woman" movie. Brian Michael Bendis, the defining Marvel Comics writer of the 2000s, sat on Marvel Studios' now-disbanded "creative committee." James Gunn, as the co-head of DC Studios, has brought writer Tom King into the fold.
"Deadpool & Wolverine," which brings the 20th Century Fox side of Marvel into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is the latest example of this; one of the movie's five credited co-writers is Zeb Wells, who also wrote an episode of "She-Hulk: Attorney at Law." For some Marvel Comic fans, however, his name lives in infamy.
Now, Wells' "X-Men" related work is well-regarded. The 18-issue series "Hellions" was like a mutant version of "Suicide Squad...

Balance. It’s the core theme of Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2 for the PlayStation 5, the follow-up game to Spider-Man (2018) and Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020). The game alternates between Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and Mary Jane, each character taking on different missions, both focused on strengthening their communities and protecting NYC from the emergence of threats both old and new, including Kraven the Hunter and Venom.
The result is not only the best superhero video game ever made but also one of the most quintessential Spider-Man stories ever told. There is an inherent understanding of both Spider-Men and the characters who populate their world that allows for the kind of growth and maturity that Spidey fans have been clamoring to see reflected in the comics for decades. So, what is it that makes Insomniac’s Spider-Man such a testament to the character, and how can the comics and further adaptations learn from it?...

Following the massive success of "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" and Tom Holland's portrayal of the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Peter Parker's wall-crawling superhero is more popular than ever. Although, if you're confused by Sony Pictures' approach to their Spider-Man movies, you're not alone. On one hand, True Believers around the world can hardly wait for "Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse" to finally hit theaters next year. On the other hand, every live-action project that gets announced by the studio is just getting weirder and weirder, and we're not even talking about the Madame Web movie that appears to follow the younger years of the elderly spider-hero that most fans remember from the 1990s "Spider-Man: The Animated Series." Instead, it's all of these works that put various members of the friendly neighborhood web-slinger's rogues gallery front and center.

I’ve written elsewhere that I’m not Nick Spencer’s biggest fan, and I’ve not been impressed with what he’s done with Peter Parker and the Spider-Man books he’s written. Yet here I am reviewing a Spider-Man book he’s written. Hear me out, though. I like Spider-Man as a character, whoever is writing and drawing him, so I’ll always give a writer or artist a second shot at impressing me. I also like Mark Bagley as a Spider-Man artist, so he helped draw me in. Finally, the premise was interesting. The hook is always designed to entice us in, and it worked with me. The Sinister Six is always a fun concept, and Spencer is not only running with that, but throwing in a whole lot more. There’s enough in all...

Ah, the new superhero costume reveal. That thing where the comic companies muck with some of their most iconic visuals to get a rise out of the fans, get eyes on their product, hopefully tell some kind of story with it, then go back to the status quo. Just now I’m getting memories of Norm MacDonald on Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update, breaking from the script to openly complain about Electric Blue Superman.
While most of the time, these new looks get rather negative reactions, they at least happen for a reason. When Batman was redesigned in the ’90s to have the ugliest, most spike-ridden armor imaginable, it was part of a narrative about how Jean-Paul Valley represented what Batman shouldn’t be. When Flash Thompson Venom looked like some kind of hulky Ben 10 creature during his time as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, it...

It’s been a good couple of months since I picked up a Marvel book, with the obvious fall in both books being put out by Marvel and by real world distribution issues related to Covid-19. DC have been stealing a march on Marvel by really throwing themselves into digital, with an impressive slate already, whereas Marvel has been cobbling together some collections and specials just to keep some sort of presence. Well, now a few monthlies are creeping back out again, and I find myself picking up this title, One I have not read in a long time. To be truthful, on the fence with this one.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m a huge Spidey fan, and I have an almost complete 1980’s run of Amazing Spider-Man, which still ranks up there with the best.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the first of the fully-integrated television projects connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe set to premiere on the Disney+ streaming service, continuing the story of Air Force pararescue airman Sam Wilson and World War II Army officer turned Hydra assassin James Buchanan Barnes in the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame, which concluded with an elderly Steve Rogers turning over the shield and mantle of Captain America to Wilson.
The series is set to showcase the return of Emily VanCamp’s S.H.I.E.L.D.-turned-cia agent Sharon Carter and Daniel Brühl’s Sokovian Armed Forces colonel Helmut Zemo, both last seen in action in the Russo Brothers’ 2016 threequel Captain America: Civil War, and will also introduce Wyatt Russell as the government’s official successor to Steve Rogers as Captain America, John Walker, a military operative alternately known as Super-Patriot and U.S.

Steve Rogers’ abdication of the shield and mantle of Captain America to Air Force pararescue airman Sam Wilson will be a point of contention in the forthcoming The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, with the United States military rejecting the Star-Spangled Man With a Plan’s choice of successor in favor of their own costumed super-patriot, John Walker.
That conflict is inspired in part by Nick Spencer’s recent two-year run on Captain America: Sam Wilson, which closed out its first issue with a sequence in the Sonoran Desert that introduced Joaquin Torres, who would eventually inherit the title of Falcon himself. But Wilson has also inherited an even greater responsibility from his former brother-in-arms, and it’s one that the government can never take away because it was bestowed upon him by Marvel fans themselves.

I’ve written elsewhere that I had become in more recent years quite jaded by the big crossover event, or the ‘buy 36 books to get the whole picture’ event. Good storytelling was being jettisoned in favour of editorial control, and the industry as a whole was suffering. Then DC started doing these type of comics, well, better. I have been really enjoying Year of the Villain, Tales from the Dark Multiverse, Event Leviathan and DCeased. Not perfect, but solid entertainment. So, what can Marvel do? Can they raise their game? Seemed like this relaunch of the 2099 universe, with specials and mini-series galore, was a good place to start. And what better place to start than this Alpha issue, where it all kicks off. Let’s take a look.

Whenever Spider-Man 2099 is mentioned, I think it fills Marvel’s True Believers with the same sort of excitement that it does whenever Batman Beyond is brought up around DC fans. Those franchises may have some major differences, sure, but they both offer awesome takes on future iterations of two of the most iconic superheroes around. That said, I can see why each caught on, whereas others of the sort had failed.
In a nutshell, the “2099” initiative was launched by Marvel Comics back in the 1990s, and provided readers with fresh takes on characters such as Spider-Man, the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Punisher and even Ghost Rider. Heck, I still have my copy of X-Men 2099 #1 bagged and boarded from when I was a kid!
As you may know, Marvel has revisited this concept off and on in the time since. The recent revival is especially appropriate, what with 2099 being 80 years from now.

Spinning out of his Amazing Spider-Man run, Nick Spencer will be playing around the 2099 sandbox later this year.
At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel announced that Nick Spencer will be returning to the 2099 timeline, although the form the story will take has yet to be not revealed. Miniseries? Event? A 2099 imprint relaunch? What we do know is that this new 2099 thing builds out of a moment from one of Spencer’s many cliffhangers in a recent Spider-Man comic.
Amazing Spider-Man #25 was filled with various developments that will branch off to different stories. While there’s a Mysterio arc, a Dr. Strange team-up, and a Sinister Syndicate storyline on the way, the biggest eye-opener was a short scene of a college lecture about how all these major advancements in Marvel’s modern universe will one day cause massive destruction in the future.

Here's an exclusive look at what comicdom's most notorious player is up to now!
With Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina both done their respective seasons, there's an Archie void that needs filling right now. Fortunately, the comics in which these now-iconic characters got their start are still being published...and are as surprising as ever.
Despite the fact that Archie Andrews made his debut nearly 80 years ago, the various creative teams who now write and illustrate stories featuring him and his ever-growing gang regularly include top notch talent. Everyone from Mark Waid to Sina Grace (whose forthcoming Jughead's Time Police reboot is among the summer's most anticipated comics) has contributed to Archie titles in recent years.
The publisher's flagship title, Archie, is currently being written by Nick Spencer and illustrated by Sandy Jarrell (Reggie & Me). In the current storyline, the typical Archie/Betty/Veronica love triangle...

After all, how can your head not turn when it appears as though the Fantastic Four’s origin will be retconned? Furthermore, who could possibly be powerful enough to accomplish that, bring back Spider-Man after Spider-Man No More, discover Captain America on ice before the Avengers, and save Jean Grey from the Dark Phoenix Saga?

In 2007, Marvel Comics launched the most controversial Spider-Man story of all-time. For years, the company had been attempting to reverse the decision to marry Spidey to Mary Jane, which they believed damaged the core brand. Finally, editor-in-chief Joe Quesada pushed for the shocking “One More Day,” which saw Peter Parker literally enter into a deal with the devil for the sake of Aunt May’s life. The cost was that his marriage was wiped out of continuity, as though it’d never happened.
The Spider-Man fanbase has never recovered from that decision. Although Marvel insiders routinely defended it, insisting the marriage went against the core brand, vast numbers of readers were furious. Now, in Nick Spencer’s Amazing Spider-Man #1, it looks as though Marvel’s actually beginning to go back on “One More Day.”
On the face of it, Amazing Spider-Man #1 should be an innocuous start to an everyday Spidey story.

On the face of it, Amazing Spider-Man #1 should be an innocuous start to an everyday Spidey story.

Marvel's "Secret Empire", now available is written by Nick Spencer and illustrated by Steve McNiven, Andrea Sorrentino, Daniel Acuña, and Leinil Francis Yu, with a cover by Mark Brooks, as 'Steve Rogers' aka 'Captain America' brings about a 'Hydra' revolution during "...the worst day in the 'Marvel Universe'...":
"His plans and Hydra's plans will have begun to unfurl," said Marvel about the story. "We are done with the covert portion, the buildup portion of the program. 'Secret Empire' is the pyrotechnics, the big Michael Bay blockbuster, with huge colossal struggles and battles across the 'Marvel Universe', with all of our key characters and players taking on a big role. 'Cap', as head of 'S.H.I.E.L.D.', is able to mobilize forces..."
"We'll definitely see an impact on our new, younger generation of heroes, a huge turn for them, a 'Watergate' moment for them.

At first glance, this does not sound like a good idea.
U.S. Avengers and Uncanny Avengers will not survive the new year. January brings us a three-month mini-event called Avengers: No Surrender. Okay; on the face of it, this seems like a good idea – and pretty much what I was calling for in this space back on September 6th when I said Secret Empire might have been a worthy eight-parter if it had been entirely confined to the two Captain America titles, segueing from Sam Wilson to Steve Rogers and completely in the hands of writer Nick Spencer. Okay, I guess I’m getting much of what I asked for.
However, Avengers: No Surrender also marks the cancellation of both U.S. Avengers and Uncanny Avengers and the “promotion” of The Avengers to weekly status… at least for the duration of the storyline. There are 13 shipping weeks in the...

Although Secret Empire technically concluded last month with its tenth issue, a few threads were left dangling. Luckily for us though, an epilogue of sorts has arrived in the form of Secret Empire: Omega #1. In addition to hinting that Black Widow may very well be still alive, writer Nick Spencer continued laying the groundwork for the next year or so of Marvel storytelling by teasing what lies ahead for the Punisher.
Still, it’s hard to argue that the main drawing point was that of the confrontation involving the two Steve Rogers, one being the former leader of Hydra who now finds himself imprisoned for his attempted takeover, and the other being the classic Captain America we know and love. Having been recently manifested thanks to the living Cosmic Cube, Kobik, the latter has reemerged as the Sentinel of Liberty that readers are familiar with.

So, despite the planet of Earth no longer having to worry about being under the thumb of Hydra, some of the consequences remain. Among those are the destruction done to Las Vegas, in addition to the deaths of Black Widow and Phil Coulson. Long story short, Kobik wanted the superpowered community to learn from their mistakes, with those tragedies serving as lasting reminders.
Well, actually, it looks like at least one of those won’t stick for very long as all signs point toward a Black Widow return.

While Secret Empire did conclude late last month, the overall story isn’t quite done. As it turns out, an epilogue issue dubbed Secret Empire: Omega #1 is due to hit stands very soon, hopefully tying up any loose ends that writer Nick Spencer may have left dangling in the mainline series.
Chief among most readers’ concerns is what exactly will become of the Steve Rogers that rose to the top of Hydra and nearly succeeded in taking over the world. As most of you are no doubt aware, he engaged in a battle for the ages with the recently returned “classic” Captain America back in Secret Empire #10. Long story short, Hydra Steve’s reign is over, but the damage done to Las Vegas remains – as do the deaths of those he killed, namely Black Widow and Phil Coulson.

Well, it’s over. Or… is it?
Does anybody else remember Marvel’s Kree – Skrull War? It was one of those mammoth, Marvel Universe shifting events: damn near everybody was in it, it had tons of intergalactic action, some serious character development… everything you could want in a major storyline. Of course, its legendary status was exacerbated with a truly stellar list of creative talent: Roy Thomas, Sal and John Buscema, and Neal Adams.
Here’s the part that might stun “younger” (as in “not-geriatric”) readers. The entire story was told in eight issues! No tie-ins, no auxiliary sidebar rack-space-wasting and largely unnecessary crossovers and mini-serieses. No phony “death” scenes and, therefore, no waiting until those dead people were mysteriously resurrected.
Now, let’s compare that with Marvel’s just-sort-of-ended Secret Empire “event.” You know, the one that came close to burning down the House of Ideas.

Jack here; I’ve bashed two weeks of my contributions to Mark’s stuff for the week of the 11th, because a) I’m behind on my writing and b) I’m not sure how to get caught up otherwise. Bit of a mishmash then, but I’m sure you can handle it, intelligent and tolerant reader.
Mark
It’s tie-in central at Marvel this week as X-Men #5 (w/Brian Wood, a/David Lopez) continues Battle of the Atom with a brevity and economy that Brian Bendis should take note of if he wants to make his lion’s share of the chapters anywhere near as compelling or characterful. Wood and Lopez deliver a solid chapter that allows almost every member of the exponentially growing cast to shine while doing a stellar job of keeping the utterly ludicrous plot seem almost grounded in some kind of reality.

Our perception of time—if you’ll forgive the physics terminology—is at the very fulcrum of many a fabulous science fiction story, comic, book, and movie. It is a dimension we have yet to conquer in real life (outside of conspiracy theories, that is), and its dips and paradoxes offer layers of action and recognition not readily offered by other storytelling tropes. I have a huge amount of admiration for any author or artist who tackles time travel, if only for the sheer amount of plot hole prevention it must take. And in a serial story, such as a monthly comic book, the stakes are raised even higher, for it is far easier to abandon a 22-page floppy than a 500-page novel in the face of confusion. The methods devised in keeping readers coming back month after month are of varying complexity and effectiveness.

When “Superior Spider Month” launched last month it was easy to look at it as just another gimmick. A ploy to boost sales via crossovers, and to get readers to pick up new books by adding Marvel’s favorite new adjective to the title. The reality is that there is really only one new title. Superior Spider-Man Team-Up is essentially just a re-titling of Avenging Spider-Man. Superior Carnage is a mini-series, and not a new ongoing. So the title that stands above the recent changes to the Spider-quo is Superior Foes of Spider-Man.
Written by Nick Spencer and drawn by Steve Lieber, Superior Foes of Spider-Man features a down and out Fred Myers trying to adjust to life on a parole. Far from trying to stay on the straight and narrow, he quickly dons the persona of Boomerang and decides to assemble the newest iteration of the Sinister Six.

Oh my gosh, there are so many comics. I took a month off visiting the comic shop on a weekly basis due to time constraints and the desire to have a little bit more money in my account prior to the end of the month. But then I got a fat stack of comics that had been sat behind the counter waiting for me. Then I got more the following week before I’d even had time to read all the ones the previous. Because there are so… many… comics. Even now, there’ll be more comics tomorrow. It’s a never ending spiral of stuff happening before some guy in a flat in South East London can write about it. Here’s my round up of the last month or so…
So Morning Glories (#29, Nick Spencer, Joe Eisma, Image Comics) is still happening, is still good and I’m still buying it.
