After a couple of light on horror weeks, we are finally treated to a bumper crop of new releases. Headlining the week is Frozen, which is just what we in Southern California need to stave off our current heat wave. A couple of oldies but goodies are out, too, as Madman celebrates its Happy 30th Birthday and the original King Kong comes to Blu-ray. Fangoria's eight FrightFest titles bow as well.
Frozen
Directed by Adam Green
In Frozen (review), Adam Green has crafted a potent combination of absolute terror and compelling human drama that will stick with you long after you've left the theatre or turned off the DVD. One thing's for sure: The next time your friends invite you on a ski weekend, odds are you'll try to convince them to head to the beach instead. Frozen stars Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell and Kevin Zegers.
Buy the Blu-ray or the regular DVD.

Dark Woods Movie PosterDark Woods has secured a DVD release with Vanguard Cinema and September 28th is the release date. The film stars Tracy Coogan (Zombie Honeymoon), James Russo (Born of Earth) and writer John Muscarnero. The film has been positively reviewed (here) and the film is a moody thriller involving a sexually developing and precocious female adolescent. The film also covers terminal cancer and one couple's desperate attempt to take on the challenge of this diminishing disease. Actress Coogan accurately describes the film as "“a psychological thriller than a horror film in the classical sense.” Special features have not been announced, but the trailer for the film can be revisited below.
The synopsis for Dark Woods here...

The Dark Woods is more of a sexual thriller than a horror movie, but I thought some of our readers might find the trailer interesting. I know I did! It stars James Russo and Tracy Coogan, and it was directed by Bit Parts director Michael Escobedo. A young couple moves to a secluded cabin in the woods to cope with a terminal illness. After rescuing a young girl from the abusive hands of her psychotic uncle he is coerced by local law enforcement to allow the young girl to stay with them. As the illness consumes his wife and Henry struggles with his own human connections, the young girl attempts to claim her place in their home. Henry must rediscover his humanity and choose between his increasingly erratic and sexually explorative new housemate and his horrifically deteriorating wife.

Director: Michael Escobedo.
Writer: John Muscanero.
A film about death, loss, and loneliness "Dark Woods," from writer John Muscanero and director Michael Escobedo, is a slowly paced psychological drama that deals with many other themes including death and cancer. Tracy Coogan plays the woman dying and she, as Susan Branch, chooses to live out her remaining days in the isolation of a backwoods community. Husband Henry Branch hopes for her recovery, but the introduction of serial rapist Rand Larch and a victim add more stress to an already depressing story. Sounds fun right?
In fact, "Dark Woods" is an enjoyable watch as the intensity builds slowly over time with mystery and the possibility of infidelity hovering over the scenes. The dark writing of the film allows actress Tracy Coogan to fully develop her character as she slips in and out of consciousness. Her acting as a woman succumbing to cancer seems researched and well rehearsed.

Dark Woods is the story of a loving husband Henry (John Muscarnero-who also wrote the film) and his dying wife Susan (played to an eerie perfection by Tracy Coogan) who travel far away from the city life into the secluded woods so she can die in peace. Herbert Brindl from the heart of Hollywood drops me another line on "Dark Woods." The film, which is psychologically themed, involves infidelity and terminal illness and "Dark Woods," is currently moving towards a future release date. Despite the serious subject matter the first trailer and one sheet poster have a distinct gloomy atmosphere that manages to heighten the films tension. As well, first time director Michael Escobedo steps behind the camera in this horror film that focuses primarily on atmosphere and story. Have a look at the first full length trailer inside.

While we had initally ignored Michael Escobedo's directorial debut in Dark Woods, I changed my mind after checking out the promo reel available for the film. It looks to be well shot and full of silent despair.

Update: The Dark Woods team let us know that there's a spankin' new trailer available for the film. While we Loved the first promo reel (see above), the new trailer gives us more of a sense of the film's dramatic storyline. Very Poison Ivy meets Crush but like, better than both of those. Fango caught up with Zombie Honeymoon actress Tracy Coogan, who gave us an update on the recently wrapped Dark Woods, which she stars in and associate produced. She also passed on some fresh exclusive photos (see ‘em below) from the movie, lensed in 14 days last October in the mountains above Los Angeles and directed by Michael Escobedo from a script by John Muscarnero (the two also produced).
Dark Woods revolves around newlyweds Susan (Coogan) and Henry Branch (Muscarnero), who move to a secluded cabin in order to attend to the former’s failing health. It seems hubbie Henry isn’t the stand-up guy he ought to be, however, and instead of keeping his focus on his terminal spouse, he engages in a sexual tryst with a local teen (Mary Kate Wiles) he has saved from a rape.
