In 1938, at age 16, Murray helped create the Bronx Playgrounds Operetta Club in New York. The group sang at the 1939 World's Fair. He also started collecting 78s , especially classical vocal recordings. he began singing with the operetta club. In the 1940s, after moving to Los Angeles, he worked odd jobs while continuing to sing, often as a synagogue cantor.
