AMC Networks has overhauled the management of its entertainment networks, promoting BBC America chief Sarah Barnett to oversee four channels focused on scripted programming: AMC, SundanceTV, BBC America and IFC.
David Madden, who joined AMC and SundanceTV last year from Fox, will take on oversight of programming for the four AMC channels in addition to overseeing the AMC Studios wing. Linda Schupack, longtime head of marketing for AMC, will run marketing for the four networks as president of marketing for entertainment networks.
The move is described as a centralizing of operations at the company that is home to five U.S. cable channels and the growing AMC Studios operations. As part of the melding of previously disparate units, AMC expects to layoff about 40 people as they eliminate overlapping positions. IFC has renewed Brockmire, its baseball-announcer spoof starring Hank Azaria, for two more seasons and also plans a third season of Documentary Now! in 2019
The news came during the network’s upfront presentation, which was held in a downstairs room at Manhattan restaurant Upland. Although quarters were tight, the turnout was good. Among the 50 or so attendees were AMC Networks CEO Josh Sapan and COO Ed Carroll, IFC president Jennifer Caserta, Azaria, Seth Meyers and the cast of the Baroness von Sketch Show, which also is returning to IFC this year.
Meyers, a creator of Documentary Now! along with Fred Armisen, Bill Hader and Rhys Thomas (Lorne Michaels is also an exec producer), said the one-year sabbatical for the show was prompted by scheduling but could turn out to be a positive thing.
“We’re so appreciative of their patience,” he said. “I think the year off will be helpful.

Well, I may be caught up in the excitement, and thus prone to overstating things a bit, But!
It is certainly one of the best shows on (and I mean the top three or four), and this is a good time to commit yourself to it, and binge the previous season, because you know it will be around.
The Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein show has always stood out as not only hilarious, but inventive, and frequently uncomfortable. The dream of the mid to late '10s are alive for "Portlandia." IFC has renewed the sketch comedy series for two more seasons, ensuring the network's biggest hit remains happy through 2017. Armisen and Brownstein remain attached, of course, along with co-creator and series director Jonathan Krisel. "We are so excited to get to do more 'Portlandia' with IFC," said Armisen and Brownstein in a joint statement. "Getting to work with Jon and our talented writers and crew, it really is our favorite thing in the world. Also, we get to spend more time in Portland!" "Portland may be a place where young people go to retire, but IFC is not retiring 'Portlandia,'" said Jennifer Caserta, IFC’s president. "And if you order a book from Toni and Candace at the Feminist Bookstore right now, it might even arrive by the time Season 7 rolls around." The...

In celebration of the 30th anniversary of Film Independent's Spirit Awards, the 2015 edition of the awards show will be broadcast live for the first time in years. For the past few years, a tape-delayed version of the show aired hours after the winners had already been revealed, rendering the show itself somewhat of an anti-climax. The 2015 show will air live from Santa Monica on IFC on February 21 at 2:00 pm Pt/5:00 pm Et. The nominees won't be revealed for a while but films like "Birdman," "Grand Budapest Hotel," "Boyhood," and "Whiplash" are among the leading contenders this year. Tenth Planet Productions' Joel Gallen will executive produce the show, while Shawn Davis will produce for the 13th time. "We wanted to shake things up to mark the 30th anniversary," said Film Independent's Josh Welsh in a press release, "and I think by broadcasting live from the beach we’ll do just that.

The TV veteran, who most recently worked at Alloy Digital, comes to the cable network as executive vp original programming and production. He’ll work from IFC’s Los Angeles office, reporting to New York-based IFC president Jennifer Caserta. “IFC is increasingly defined by our ‘slightly off’ approach to original programming, so having the right creative executive running this critical function is so important for our continued growth and success,” Caserta said. “Peter has a terrific record of developing distinctive programming that connects with viewers, and will help us build

Former Regency TV president Peter Aronson is returning to the executive ranks, joining IFC as Evp Original Programming. He succeeds Debbie DeMontreux who resigned in December. Aronson will oversee original programming, working out of the network’s Los Angeles office. New York-based IFC has only had a presence in Los Angeles with a development executive (director Erin Keating) since opening an office last year, so this marks a major West Coast shift for the cable network. Along with fellow TV executive-turned digital entrepreneur Jordan Levin, with whom he co-founded Generate, Aronson had been in play since October when Alloy Digital and Break Media merged to form Defy Media, run largely by the Break Media team. Following Alloy’s 2012 acquisition of Generate, Aronson served as Evp of Alloy Digital in addition to his role at president of Generate. Aronson’s IFC appointment comes a couple of weeks after Levin landed the No.

IFC and R. Kelly will be making more "Trapped in the Closet." IFC first joined up with the R&B star in 2007, and has in the years since hosted online and helped produced new installments of the story as it's rolled out. IFC has renewed "Maron" for an expanded second season, the network announced Tuesday. The half-hour comedy follows quirky, sardonic comedian Marc Maron's adventures as he produces the popular "Wtf With Marc Maron Podcast."
Jennifer Caserta, IFC president and general manager, said in a statement that "Maron" was an excellent fit with the network. “In many ways, Marc is a perfect representation of IFC and our approach to comedy," she continued. "He also seems to be in need of a less dysfunctional family, so we’re happy he’s returning to ours for an expanded second season.”
A 13-episode Season 2 will premiere sometime in 2014. Season 1, which finished its run in June, was only 10 episodes.
"Maron" has been frequently compared to FX's "Louie," and the two comedians are longtime friends, though their relationship has been rocky over the years. Like Louis C.K., Maron is the creator, writer, executive producer and star of his own show.
