When Assassin’s Creed: Origins was released at the tail-end of October 2017, it came during a moment of transition and epiphany for the long-running video game franchise. After being launched a decade earlier, almost to the day, there had been a new Assassin’s Creed title virtually every year from the game publisher Ubisoft. Until 2016. Due to spending so many years returning to the same formula, Assassin’s Creed developers realized they needed time off; they needed to regroup and reimagine; they needed bold change in what their vision of the future could be.
Abubakar Salim could relate. Fresh out of a classical education at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, Salim did not necessarily anticipate discovering a career in video game voice acting and motion-capture, yet his casting in the central role of Assassin’s Creed: Origins as Bayek of Siwa had a life-altering effect.

Megaton Entertainment, an indie distribution and film sales firm, has picked up a pair of titles from Hong Kong production entities Amm Entertainment and Phoenix Waters. It is launching them at the American Film Market (AFM) this week.
Megaton is pre-selling “Chungking Mansions,” which it bills as the biggest zombie film in Hong Kong cinema history, and also as “ ’The Raid’ with zombies.” Directed by banker turned producer and director Bizhan Tong (“The Escort”), the film tracks a diverse group of people who, following a zombie attack, try to break into Chungking Mansions.
The building was made famous in Wong Kar-wai’s Chungking Express and is possibly the richest cultural melting pot in the predominantly Chinese city. Wong is reputed to have called it a “mass-populated and hyperactive place.”

What began as a mod called Defense of the Ancients for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos in 2003 has become a multimedia empire for Valve. Dota 2 currently reigns as one of the most popular multiplayer online battle arena (Moba) games on the planet, spawning multi-million-dollar esports tournaments as well as a huge viewership on live streaming platforms. With Dota: Dragon’s Blood, Valve and Netflix bring the world of Dota to anime.
Produced by Legend of Korra animation company Studio Mir, along with Netflix Animation and Valve, this new take on the franchise is inspired by the lore found in the Moba, but is also serious narrative expansion of this universe, introducing backstories for not only some of the characters we know from the games but the goddesses and dragons that rule the world of Dota beyond the mortal realm. Asia Television, previously Hong Kong’s number two free-to-air broadcaster, may no longer be visible on local TV screens. But the ex-broadcaster is now being recast as a content studio, with its new offshoot Amm Global leading the charge.
The division is headed by Bizhan Tong, a Chinese-British former banker turned filmmaker (“The Escort”). He joined the company after directing “Lockdown,” a U.K.-Hong Kong co-venture film produced and co-financed by Tong’s Phoenix Waters Productions, Hong Kong asset management firm Yg Capital, and Amm Global. International sales are handled jointly by Amm Global and US firm OneTwoThree.
The movie, being launched at FilMart, is a pandemic-era thriller in which an actor must keep passing devious tests set by a casting director in order to keep the people around him alive. As events escalate and more people are trapped the actor must confront his past, overcome his present, and...

Alix Wilton Regan’s main success so far in her career has come in the world of video games, having lent her vocal abilities to gaming franchises ranging from Assassin’s Creed, to Dragon Age to recently playing Keanu Reeves’ partner in Cyberpunk 2077. But that could soon change, and her face is likely to become just as recognisable as her voice, if her latest turn if anything to go by, as she impresses greatly in a nuanced display as Mary Shelley, in A Nightmare Wakes.
We had the pleasure of speaking to the London-based actress to discuss this project in great length, as well as looking back over another accomplished turn alongside none other than Glenn Close in The Wife. We also speak about her history in voice over work, and on what the future may hold, and just how she’s managed to get by across the events of the last 12 months.

Pitched somewhere between horror and historical drama, this film probes the personal trauma that may have shaped Shelley’s invention of Frankenstein
Here is an earnestly intended psychological drama about Mary Shelley, and her relationship with Percy Bysshe Shelley, Byron, Polidori and Claire Clairmont during that legendary summer in 1816 on Lake Geneva when Byron challenged everyone to write a ghost story – and Mary conceived of Frankenstein, so commercially outpacing the literary alpha males and anticipating the modern world in ways far beyond them. The film’s drama centres on the trauma of her pregnancy and childbirth, yoking together the ideas of her dark imagination with pre- and postpartum depression, as well as the patriarchal male-author myth – Percy is shown being threatened by Mary’s creativity and sensuality.
It is an idealistic and heartfelt film, but also precious and self-conscious with some pretty callow performances, like a student production at the Edinburgh fringe.

But in 2017 came the film Mary Shelley, in which Elle Fanning played the author, and now in 2021 A Nightmare Wakes comes to Shudder. This movie covers the true story of the part of her life where she had an affair with a married man and fell pregnant with his child, all while trying to write the famous novel Frankenstein.

So far, 2018 has not particularly released a whole lot of contenders in the acting categories. This week, a possibility emerges when The Wife hits theaters. A showcase for Glenn Close, the film actually has designs on finally winning her an Academy Award. Obviously, for Close to take Best Actress at the Oscars, she’ll have to become the one to beat during the precursor season. More on that later, but this movie does at least suggest that she’ll be in play this year. If the product on the whole is only good, Close on her own is rather great. She’s rarely been better. The film is a drama, one rooted in literature. The simple IMDb synopsis is as follows: “A wife questions her life choices as she travels to Stockholm with her husband, where he is slated to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature.” The wife in question...

In Swedish director Bjorn Runge’s film version of the 2003 Meg Wolitzer novel, the brilliant Glenn Close plays Joan Castleman, the wife of celebrated author Joe Castleman (Jonathan Pryce), who’s just won the Nobel Prize for literature. For him, the win is better than sex, which the lusty lion enjoys quite a lot even (and especially) outside the bedroom he shares with his wife. For her, however, the triumph sparks a crisis of identity and conscience that builds as the couple arrives in Stockholm. Adoration will be lavished on Joe; meanwhile,...

"Don't ever think that you can get their approval." Sony Pictures Classics has debuted an official trailer for an indie thriller titled The Wife, which first premiered at the Toronto and Zurich Film Festivals last fall. Adapted from a novel, The Wife is about a woman who questions her life choices as she travels to Stockholm with her husband, where he is slated to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Glenn Close stars as Joan Castleman, with Jonathan Pryce as her husband, and a cast including Max Irons, Christian Slater, Harry Lloyd, Alix Wilton Regan, and Michael Benz. Described as "a poignant, funny and emotional journey; a celebration of womanhood, self-discovery and liberation." This looks very, very good, with a very impressive performance from Close especially. Seems like it might actually be worth your time to catch this. [Editor’s Note: The following review of “The Brave” Season 1, Episode 1, “Pilot,” contains spoilers.]
“The Brave” may chronicle the actions of courageous men and women, but, as a series, it’s anything but. The pilot is a paint-by-numbers kidnap-and-rescue story with an unrealistically happy ending, and the military drama only approaches any kind of haunting authenticity with an ending as dark and terrifying as it is likely not to come true.
Beginning in Syria, the first episode picks up Dr. Kimberly Welles (Alix Wilton Regan) as she’s getting a ride home from her posting with Doctors Without Borders. But when her driver takes an alternate route and then abandons the car, gunmen descend on the car and take Kimberly by force.

If there was a way to regain their youth what would the old do to claim that prize? RPG aka Real Playing Game looks to answer that in a science fiction style, meaning killing each other in a virtual reality style environment. Is murder worth the extra years on the Earth? For the people who could afford something like that the answer would probably be yes.
Steven Battier (Hauer) is old and terminally ill but also a multi-millionaire. Accepting an offer from a company RPG he takes part in a group venture which promises to give him the chance to be young again. For 10 hours the elderly group are transferred into the bodies of younger and healthier bodies and told they must kill each to claim the prize.

In keeping with Big Finish’s addition of Mary Shelly (Julie Cox) to the 8th Doctor’s (Paul McGann) Tardis, we have something of a horror story, involving witches, religious zealotry and murder. So, basically a Tuesday for the Tardis crew.
Our story begins with Mary saving the lives of two teenage twins from a strange, monstrous creature living inside a recently unsealed well. The twins, Finicia (Alix Wilton Regan) and Lucien (Kevin Trainor) wind up inside the Tardis, and then the Tardis winds up in 17th century England. They’re still all in the same village, but a different time, and yet a place where the twins are recognized.
It turns out they’ve arrived during a witch scare, and a local woman, Agnes (Serena Evans), is about to be burned for witchcraft. She’s surprisingly sanguine about her upcoming fate, but before the Doctor...

Director: Michael Bartlett and Kevin Gates.
Writer: Kevin Gates.
World of the Dead: The Zombie Diaries 2 is a sequel to the 2006 film The Zombie Diaries. Much like the zombie antagonists, World of the Dead: The Zombie Diaries 2 is a lifeless thriller that has been described as "the world's most tedious zombie movie" (Daily) and "lacking character development" (Mirror). Released on DVD in the United Kingdom June 27th, this film shambles around at a monotonous pace, until the ending finally finds something brilliant (irony). But most viewers will have fallen down dead from boredom before these final few minutes.
A squad of territorial soldiers embarks from their virus overrun bunker in search of Hope's Point. Here, there is a possible rescue by ships from Rotterdam. Zombies walking at 1/4 km an hour drive the plot at a sedate pace, as Maddox (Philip Brodie) urges his squad forward. Then, the first of three exploitative rapes begins,...

Bridesmaids (15)
(Paul Feig, 2011, Us) Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne, Maya Rudolph, Jon Hamm, 125 mins.
Having recovered from the shocking revelation that women can be funny, rude, and entertaining in the absence of men, we can at last put the debates and Hangover comparisons this movie has prompted behind us now and just enjoy a satisfying prenuptial comedy. Led by Wiig's anxious maid of honour, it certainly matches male equivalents in the grossness stakes at times, but it also finds deeper, smarter ways to make us laugh.
Incendies (15)
(Denis Villeneuve, 2010, Can/Fra) Lubna Azabal, Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin, Maxim Gaudette. 131 mins.
A mother's death sets her two children on an investigation into their personal and political history in this powerful mystery, set in an unnamed Middle Eastern country.
Countdown To Zero (Nc)
(Lucy Walker, 2010, Us) 89 mins.
Not got enough things to worry about? That's because you forgot about the threat of nuclear annihilation that still hangs over us.
