There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

Last month, while interviewing executive producer Nigel Lythgoe for a story about possible changes to American Idol for its upcoming eleventh season, I proposed the idea that the show should introduce a list of 11 songs that would be banned from the live performance rounds on the grounds that they’ve been done to death in previous seasons. Lythgoe’s response caught me off guard: “Well, Mike, if you want to write down and send me 11 songs that you don’t want to hear again, I will put them through to the committee.”
Well, sir, you don’t have to ask me twice!

The news of Pia “I Got Voted Off ‘Idol’ Way Early And All I Got Was This Awesome Record Deal” Toscano joining Interscope’s roster surprised no one, except maybe my cat Moo Shu. (Homegirl’s a Voice fan. She thinks Idol is so seven years ago.) Toscano already shattered records by being the lowest-placing Idol also-ran to nab a significant major label deal in the show’s ten year history. (She was ninth! Ninth, I say!)
While we wait to see whether Pia becomes the next Jennifer Hudson or Kristy Lee Cook, let’s look back at the careers of previous ninth-place finishers to see how they’ve fared.
Season One: Jim Verraros
Jim was our inaugural “token sob story” contestant, and he parlayed his name recognition into movie roles in popular gay indie flicks. (Eating Out 2: Sloppy Seconds might be my fave sequel title since Electric Boogaloo.

American Idol fans tuning into Tuesday night’s Dancing With the Stars results show got a surprising bit of news: Idol‘s recently (and shockingly) booted finalist Pia Toscano will perform a song on DWTS‘ April 26 results show, as her rumored beau, DWTS pro Mark Ballas (along with Karina Smirnoff), get their boogie on.
In a conference call with reporters today, Idol executive producer Ken Warwick said that when DWTS approached Idol brass about booking Pia as a guest, he saw no reason to turn ‘em down — despite the fact that the reality ratings behemoths air on competing networks. In fact,...

Looking back throughout the last 10 seasons of ‘American Idol,’ it seems like the most talented contestants always get cut before they should!
The world was stupefied when the talented and beautiful Pia Toscano was eliminated from American Idol April 7. However, the 22-year-old belter’s elimination isn’t necessarily the most shocking moment in the show’s history. Remember when Kris Allen beat Adam Lambert in season eight? What about when Chris Daughtry got the boot before Katharine McPhee in season five? Check out our Top 10 most shocking moments in Idol history and tell us which one surprised you most!
1. Pia Toscano: With two-to-one odds of winning the competition, no one expected Pia Toscano, 22, to be the ninth contestant eliminated on Season 10. Everyone thought she was a fan favorite!
2. Adam Lambert: When Ryan Seacrest announced Kris Allen was the season eight winner of American Idol, he was shocked. Everyone...

The Season 10 "American Idol" contestants are about to take the stage for their Top 10 week (on Elton John songs!), so we're going to look back at the best past Top 10 performances. Not the Top 10 of all time, but performances that happened during the Top 10, much like last week's Top 11 rewind.
We realize that Season 10 is still at Top 11 because of the save, but since they're going to immediately skip to Top 9 next week, we're doing a Top 10 rewind anyway. We wouldn't want to miss out on such great performances.
So who do you like? Vote in our poll below. While certain more recent Idols are fresh in our memories, can you believe how awesome Kimberley Locke was on "I Can't Make You Love Me"? We think we've picked the cream of the Top 10 crop here. Let us know what you think in the poll and the comments.

Wednesday night, American Idol broke out the time-honored theme of “Songs From the Year You Were Born,” which is alternately known as “Excuses to Show Contestants’ Baby Photos” Week and also “Holy Crap, You Could Have Totally Changed That Singer’s Diaper!” Night. Song selections ranged from Nirvana to Whitney Houston (twice!), and from “I’m just gonna pretend that wasn’t the theme from Disney’s Pocahontas” to “Dude, Carrie and Allison sang it better, and as a matter of fact, so did Gina Glocksen.” And that was just the tip of the inscrutable iceberg.

The songs have been selected. The cheap leftover prom dresses? Chosen. The new director has pre-loaded all of his favorite wilderness graphics. This is "American Idol X: When Teenage Girls Find Out They're Not God's Gift To Music."
The theme for Wednesday night's (March 9) Top 13 show: "Personal Idols." They included a man who was tried (and acquitted) for peeing on a 13-year-old, a famous adulterer and a dude who once uploaded eight free albums from kooky alter egos with song titles as varied as "Get Scared, Throw Up, Die," "Drunk as a Pile of F---" and "Passed Out In AA – F---." Perhaps producers should have added the word "musical" in the theme's title, because I seriously doubt Thia Megia's manufacturers programmed her to adopt a chimp and hang out with Webster.

Ever have that nightmare where you’re headed into a classroom for a huge final exam, even though you’ve only attended one class all semester? That’s pretty much the conundrum facing American Idol fans after Wednesday night’s season 10 women’s semifinal: Based on a single night of live performances, we’re being asked to toss at least half of the top 12 women onto the Idol scrap heap, where their sparkling dreams of superstardom will be violently ground down and repurposed as body shimmer for Jennifer Lopez. And inevitably, we’re bound to get some answers wrong.

On a night when Thia Megia gave a quiet, confident performance well beyond her 15 years and teen Lauren Alaina was compared to both Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, it was nevertheless Pia Toscano who stole the show on Wednesday's (March 2) "American Idol."
Toscano, who anchored the episode with the final performance of the evening, took on the Pretenders' "I'll Stand By You" and knocked it out of the park, building to a series of powerful glory notes in the closing moments that brought the entire studio audience — her fellow contestants and the judges included — to its feet.

As part of the ramp-up to "Idol Gives Back," past "American Idol" contestants are volunteering at food banks around the country.
One of the charities receiving the "Idol Gives Back" aid is Feeding America and in addition to donating money, the past Idols are helping with the Feeding America backpack program.
The idea is that children have food during the week when they are in school, but once the weekend comes around, they might be going hungry. These backpacks are filled with nutritious things like apple juice, tuna, milk, mashed potatoes and spaghetti and meatballs. The kids can pick up the backpacks on Fridays and return them on Mondays, then pick them up again the following Friday and so on. Also included in the backpacks are informational packets about nutritional food.

Former top 10 season six "American Idol" star Gina Glocksen, known for a colorful streak in her hair and her rocker voice, sang a little different tune New Year's Eve. The tune - "Going to the chapel and I'm gonna get married."
Glocksen, 24, married her longtime boyfriend, schoolteacher Joe Ruzicka, on New Year's Eve. Ruzicka popped the question to Glocksen in August of 2007 in front of a live audience in Illinois, where Glocksen and the other top 10 season six "Idol" contestants were performing.
The couple exchanged vows in a non-denominational ceremony at the Century Memorial Chapel at Naper Settlement in Naperville, Illinois. Glocksen called on some of her "American Idol" friends to take part in the wedding - "Idol" winner Jordin Sparks and Haley Scarnato were bridesmaids.
Glocksen is currently recording an album in Nashville and was a co-host for the Fox Reality show "American Idol Extra" in 2008.
