“American Idol” may be a platform for aspiring unknown singers to showcase their talent outside of their bedrooms, but some contestants may have an advantage over others: being born into famous families.
Season 21 has already shown several so-called “Nepo Babies” — contestants with ties to the entertainment business — competing for the crown, including Kaya Stewart, daughter of Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics (pictured).
“With all your different opportunities and connections and stuff, how did you even land on ‘American Idol?’” Judge Katy Perry asked before her audition.
It’s a fair question, but “nepo babies” competing on “American Idol” is nothing new. In the past, the offspring of parents with varying backgrounds from music, acting, sports, and politics have all found their way in front of the judges.
Actor Jim Carrey’s daughter, Jane, earned a golden ticket in season 11; Aretha Franklin’s granddaughter, Grace, auditioned last season; and Lara Johnston,...

On Sunday, March 5’s episode of American Idol, radio host Marybeth Byrd wowed the judges with her flawless country-pop twang. Simon Cowell gained fame with his reputation as the brutally honest — and sometimes downright mean — judge on American Idol. However, that wasn’t who Cowell really was, according to former Fox executive Mike Darnell. In an interview last year, Darnell revealed that Cowell’s “mean judge” personality was all part of a “character” created specifically for American Idol. Here’s more on Cowell’s time on Idol and his persona, plus what he’s been up to since leaving the show.
Former ‘American Idol’ judge Simon Cowell | Ray Mickshaw/WireImage How long was Simon Cowell on ‘American Idol’?
Cowell, who grew up in an upper-class family in England, worked in the record industry for years. He was a talent scout and producer, signing artists and groups like Westlife, Sinitta, Jerome Flynn, and more. So, Cowell knew what to look for when he became a judge on Pop Idol in the U.

It's the final round of Hollywood Week for the men of "American Idol" -- solo day. Who's going to choke and who's going to come through in the clutch?
As the intro about the song list and the band roll, my husband goes, "I just thought about the best name for the 'Idol' band -- 'Idol Hands'" and then he laughed really hard. *sigh*
Up first is Paul Jolley, who is having some serious nerves. He is also wearing a lot of white and makes an interesting song choice -- "Blown Away," by Carrie Underwood. Huh. It's a little Broadway for our taste. Nicki Minaj is sporting an enormous wig, hat and sunglasses. Is she hungover?
Lazaro Arbos does "The Edge of Glory." So apparently Gaga is universal, 'cause he sounded like he knew that one. Curtis Finch does "Jar of Hearts" and he sounds good, but he too is a bit theatrical with it.

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

A few hours ago, Ryan Seacrest (aka @RyanSeacrest) sent out the following enigmatic Tweet: “Tonight will be a Very interesting #americanidol. Good luck @LAlainaAI10, @JDurbinAI10, @SMcCreeryAI10 & @HReinhartAI10.” This, naturally, made my sleep-deprived brain spinning like a roulette wheel that finally (and ridiculously) stopped on this thought: What if nobody gets sent home tonight on American Idol?
It wouldn’t be unprecedented: Don’t forget that back in Season 6 producers called an audible and decided not to give anyone the boot during Idol Gives Back. (The following week, both Phil Stacey and Chris Richardson were eliminated.)

When Jennifer Lopez appeared on "American Idol" in 2007 and pronounced her love for the infamous Sanjaya Malakar, who could have predicted that the diva-turned-guest mentor would one day return to the reality competition?
But return she has, this time as a judge. As we prepare for her debut Wednesday night (January 19), alongside Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler, we're taking a look back at J.Lo's season-six "Idol" appearance, looking for clues as to how she'll handle the tricky task of being both entertaining and instructive in the course of a seconds-long sound bite.

Though he will not reach the legal drinking age until 2014, let's pour one out for Aaron Kelly, the gawky balladeer who got the ol' heave-ho on "American Idol" Wednesday night (May 5). I've spent far too much of the past few months trying to wrap my head around just how the teen — whose voice I once compared to the sound of "nails on the chalkboard of a high school math class he should be sitting in instead of crooning on 'Idol'" — managed to stick around the competition this long. For now, I salute the kid for a job well done (if hardly well sung).
So what will become of young Kelly? Will he go on to a successful career as a recording artist? Or might we never hear his warbling voice again? A look back at former "Idol" contestants who got voted off in the fifth...

As part of the ramp-up to "Idol Gives Back," past "American Idol" contestants are volunteering at food banks around the country.
One of the charities receiving the "Idol Gives Back" aid is Feeding America and in addition to donating money, the past Idols are helping with the Feeding America backpack program.
The idea is that children have food during the week when they are in school, but once the weekend comes around, they might be going hungry. These backpacks are filled with nutritious things like apple juice, tuna, milk, mashed potatoes and spaghetti and meatballs. The kids can pick up the backpacks on Fridays and return them on Mondays, then pick them up again the following Friday and so on. Also included in the backpacks are informational packets about nutritional food.

"American Idol's" Hollywood Week has concluded and judges Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres, Kara Dioguardi and Randy Jackson have sealed the fate of Season 9's hopefuls.
The Top 24 has been chosen and this year's male dozen and female dozen of contenders are about to embark on a journey of a lifetime. So besides revealing the list of this year's soon-to-be-household names what else do we know so far:
1. Ellen DeGeneres is just the shot in the arm that the show needed. Now we've been on Team Ellen since her ABC sitcom, but some "Idol" watchers and aficionados wondered if DeGeneres had the judging chops to hold her own against the big bad Cowell. Well so far Ellen's exceeded expectations, demonstrating herself as both a competent opponent and colleague alongside Cowell at the judges table. Hollywood Week(s) continued on "American Idol" on Wednesday night (February 10). Ryan Seacrest apparently calls this portion of the program "Hell Week." This just in: "American Idol" is now taking cues from sororities! I can't wait until next week's episode, when all the contestants lay naked on the floor while Kara DioGuardi circles body fat with a Sharpie.
Wednesday night was the dreaded "Group Night," where, like every other season, the remaining 96 hopefuls broke off into small groups, took over hallways and lobbies of a hotel in California and sang Motown tunes into half-empty water bottles all through the night. (Seriously, I hope "Idol" buys out that entire hotel. Imagine the phone calls the front desk guy must get at four in the morning: "They're still singing 'Get Ready' in the hallway!" "Two people are screaming about choreography outside my door." "I accidentally bought a porno flick 90 minutes ago. I won't be charged,...

Simon Cowell may have dismissed American Idol season six finalist Chris Sligh with a terse, "bye-bye curly," when the mop-top crooner was voted off the show, but Sligh has managed to get the last word on farewells. The singer, who moved to Nashville after Idol in 2007, just scored his first songwriting No. 1 with Rascal Flatts's "Here Comes Goodbye." The tune, which Sligh wrote last year with friend Clint Lagerberg, is the first single from the group's new album and just topped the country charts last week.
