The Peabody Awards are trying again for Los Angeles. The Peabody org announced Thursday that it will hold its 84th annual ceremony at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Sunday, June 9. This reps the Peabody Award’s return to an in-person event for the first time since 2019, and also its first time in L.A. — having previously been held in New York (and virtually over the past four years during the pandemic and Hollywood strikes).
Last year was actually supposed to be the Peabody Awards’ move out west and return to an in-person gathering after Covid-19 forced the show to go virtual in 2020, 2021 and 2022. But the Hollywood strikes then forced the group to do another virtual ceremony in 2023.
Also, as part of the announcement, Peabody revealed that Wonya Lucas has been named as the next chair of the Peabody Awards Board of Jurors. And added to its board of jurors are...

Fantastical elements have been part of television since 1964's "Bewitched" and 1965's "I Dream of Jeannie. In the following decades, the genre's popularity has only grown, moving beyond family-friendly sitcoms. The '90s brought us "Hercules" and "Xena: Warrior Princess." The 2000s ushered in the massive cultural phenomenon of "Lost." The world of fantasy television is wonderfully expansive, featuring some of the most critically-acclaimed television -- from philosophical comedies like "The Good Place" to time travel romantic dramas like "Outlander," to high fantasy tales of intrigue and betrayal like "House of the Dragon." For every beloved series, there's a critically-panned fantasy flop. Every "Game of Thrones" season 1, there's a "Game of Thrones" season 8.
But the reviews are not the end all be all of a show's enjoyability. After all, art is subjective. Sometimes media that didn't work for critics can still be a great time. Even if a show was not well-received on its release,...

In February 2022, a battle was brewing between two Sundance factions over the documentary “Jihad Rehab,” a film that earned critical raves during its run at the virtual festival a month earlier but was being targeted by a small group of vocal detractors. The two sides — festival programmers and non-programmers — converged to discuss the spiraling controversy over the Meg Smaker-helmed film, which depicts a handful of Guantanamo detainees who have been released from the U.S. prison into a 12-month Saudi de-radicalization program.
Sources describe a knockdown, drag-out showdown between programming director Kim Yutani, defending the film, and some members of the institute, who hadn’t watched “Jihad Rehab” but wanted to placate those outraged over its inclusion in the lineup. The film’s critics took aim at Smaker, namely for being a non-Arab director and potentially endangering the film’s subjects while reinforcing stereotypes of Muslims as terrorists. Their...

Christina Ricci should be considered a potential surprise Emmy winner in the Best Drama Supporting Actress category for her terrific performance as Misty in “Yellowjackets,” created by Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson. The gripping 10-episode first season with two parallel storylines— one, a high school girls soccer team struggling to live in the Canadian wilderness after a plane crash, and two, those survivors decades later navigating their way through the world as adults — was a critical hit for Showtime this past year. The series netted seven Emmy Award nominations, including Best Drama Series and Best Drama Actress for Melanie Lynskey as Shauna, but Ricci is the clear stand-out in an outstanding ensemble cast. As Lorraine Ali says in The Los Angeles Times, “Ricci [kills] in ‘Yellowjackets,’ figuratively and literally.” Why might Christina Ricci win the Emmy? Below are my top four reasons.

Less than three weeks after the premiere of its newest season, “Stranger Things” made history as the most-watched English language Netflix series of all time, surpassing its own 2019 record by over 198 million viewing hours. It may also turn out to be the show that keeps the streamer’s Best Drama Series Emmy victory streak going, since 2021 winner “The Crown” is out of commission this year. LA Times TV critic Lorraine Ali recently moderated a 2022 Emmys FYC panel featuring the series’ creators, Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, as well as cast members Natalia Dyer, Priah Ferguson, Brett Gelman, Maya Hawke, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp and Sadie Sink. Watch the video Q&a above.
The Duffer brothers, who have written and directed almost half of the “Stranger Things” saga so far and also serve as executive producers, spoke at length about the various changes they made heading into season four. In terms of character and plot development,...

Ever since the Critics Choice Awards started honoring television fare in 2011, they’ve had an eye on the future. The Broadcast Television Journalists Association clearly gets a kick out of rewarding up-and-coming shows for their first seasons. Three freshman dramas — “Homeland,” “Mr. Robot” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” — won Best Drama Series here before going on to take top Emmys. And Showtime’s buzzed-about “Yellowjackets” could be the next. It recently reaped Critics Choice bids for Best Drama Series and Best Drama Actress (Melanie Lynskey).

During a panel titled “Showrunner Superpanel: where do we go from here” at the virtual edition of the Banff World Media Festival, a roster of some of the top shows on television talked about their journeys to Hollywood. Steven Canals (Pose), Tanya Saracho (Vida), Anna Winger (Unorthodox), Liz Tigelaar (Little Fires Everywhere), Kerry Ehrin (The Morning Show) and Liz Feldman (Dead To Me) were joined by moderator Lorraine Ali from the Los Angeles Times to not only unpack their experiences but also address how they think the TV landscape and storytelling will shift after the pandemic and the long-overdue cultural shift taking over the world as a result death of George Floyd and the racial injustices faced by Black people and other marginalized voices.

Politics are everywhere in 2020, especially on TV, where Hulu premiered its documentary series “Hillary” on March 6. Its subject, politician Hillary Rodham Clinton, didn’t win the 2016 presidential election, but this look into her life and career could win Emmys. So what do critics think of this portrait of a lady under fire?
As of this writing “Hillary” has a MetaCritic score of 76 based on 18 reviews counted thus far: 15 positive, 3 somewhat mixed, none outright negative. On Rotten Tomatoes, which categorizes reviews simply as positive or negative and not on MetaCritic’s nuanced sliding scale, it has a freshness rating of 76% based on 41 reviews, 10 of which are classified as negative. The Rt critics’ consensus says, “‘Hillary’ faces the impossible task of consolidating a full life into four hours — still, it serves as an insightful, often powerful exploration of Hillary Clinton’s life and legacy.”

‘The Mandalorian.’
Disney Australia/New Zealand is using its social media platforms to promote a raft of original shows including the $120 million Star Wars spin-off The Mandalorian which will premiere on Disney+ when the direct-to-consumer service launches next Tuesday.
The company will be hoping for a similar response to the North American launch last Tuesday when 10 million people signed up – but without the technical glitches.
Many users reported they had trouble either finding the service, downloading it or getting it to work at all.
“The consumer demand for Disney+ has exceeded our highest expectations. While we are pleased by this incredible response, we are aware of the current user issues and are working to swiftly resolve them. We appreciate your patience,” said a Us Disney rep.
In Australia Disney+ will cost $8.99 per month or $89.99 per year, undercutting Netflix, which charges $9.99 a month for the standard feed and $13.95 for HD, and...

Watching Amazon‘s “Good Omens,” I couldn’t help but think that Crowley was a role that only David Tennant could have played, if only because of how well it combines seemingly incongruous elements of his past performances: the whimsical heroism of “Doctor Who,” the cantankerousness of Di Alec Hardy in “Broadchurch,” and the malevolent charisma of Kilgrave in “Jessica Jones.” If “Good Omens” weren’t based on a novel from 1990, I’d swear it was Tennant fan fiction.
The actor stars in “Good Omens” as Crowley, a literal demon from hell who sets out to do evil across all of human history but develops an unlikely friendship with angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen). Armageddon is coming, and Crowley finds himself torn between his duty to wreak havoc on humanity and the fact that he has actually grown quite fond of the Earth over the millennia. Both he and Aziraphale wonder...

Emmy voters need to watch, and bow, to “The Spanish Princess.” Half way through its six episode run, the Starz limited series has been ticking all the right boxes. Visually sumptuous sets and costumes? Check. Cinematography and music to die for? Check. A new take on an old classic, driven by a predominantly female team, where the often forgotten women of Henry VIII‘s Tudor court are spotlighted? Check. A confidently endearing lead performance by relative newcomer Charlotte Hope? Check.

In “The Spanish Princess,” Hope plays Catherine of Aragon, who eventually marries King Henry VIII to become the queen of England during the 16th century. Adapted from the Philippa Gregory novels “The Constant Princess” and “The King’s Curse,” it is the anticipated sequel to anthology dramas “The White Queen” (2013) and “The White Princess” (2017).

Netflix’s controversial new black comedy “Insatiable” received ample criticism for its trailer alone, which spurred accusations of fat-shaming. But with all the episodes now available on the streaming service, critics are saying the actual show is “much worse.”
“Insatiable” stars Disney Channel alumna Debby Ryan as a high schooler who is ridiculed for her weight until an accident requires her jaw to be wired shut, causing her to lose several pounds. Social media users skewered the trailer, which shows the newly thin Ryan strutting through the halls, plotting her former bullies’ demises as her classmates look on in newfound lust and wonder.
The body-centric plot sparked outrage from many, resulting in a petition to cancel the show with more than 200,000 signatures. Ryan and the show’s creators responded to the backlash by asking skeptics to hold their opinions until after they’d seen the series. Well, “Insatiable” has officially...

It took two and a half years for Netflix to finally premiere the second season of its Marvel superhero series “Jessica Jones” — or less, if you count the “Defenders” crossover miniseries that aired last year. “Jones” premiered in November 2015 as part of an interconnected Marvel universe that also includes “Daredevil,” “Luke Cage” and “Iron Fist” and also makes occasional references to the big-screen “Avengers.” But “Jessica Jones” also stood out as the most acclaimed entry in the Marvel TV canon, and when it returned for its second season on March 8, International Women’s Day, it also emerged as possibly the most relevant.
