With the central father-daughter character team of Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Chloe Moretz already in place on the indie drama The Rut, director Karyn Kusama has turned her attention to the other roles. And her first pick? Ray Liotta. The Rut finds teenager Alexandria Heller (Moretz) looking to win her legendary hunter father Ray (Morgan)’s approval in an unorthodox fashion: she heads out into the wilderness to track down deer on her own. Huh: have we been watching too much Supernatural, or does anyone else get the impression that all Morgan offspring will engage in hunting of one form or another? Now it sounds like she’ll have to face more than just the elements on her quest, as Liotta has been hired to play Bob Nutley, a hunting obsessed local who is a serious rival to Morgan’s character. With a name like “Nutley”, you just know he’s going to be trouble.

I’ve missed Ray Liotta. I don’t know if it was a series of poor choices, the powers that be in Hollywood just not caring for his presence, or even a desire to do smaller movies — but we haven’t seen the guy do a great film since, I don’t know, Goodfellas? (Copland‘s much better than everyone remembers, actually.) Andrew Dominik‘s Killing Them Softly and The Iceman are at least in the waits, and, now, Karyn Kusama might provide some further relief to whatever ailment may already exist.
THR informs us that Liotta will be taking a big role in her new film, The Rut, a job that also sees him working alongside Chloe Moretz and Jeffrey Dean Morgan — in a villainous capacity, too. The film, written by Kevin Caruso, revolves around “a teenage girl who aims to win her father’s approval by surrounding herself...

It's a miracle! Ray Liotta may have found a new movie and won't be playing a cop, corrupt or otherwise! THR says that the actor is now in negotiations for a part in The Rut, a thriller that would see him starring opposite Chloe Moretz and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Described by the trade as "Winter.s Bone meets Whale Rider," The Rut is about a young girl who, in an attempt to impress her father, goes into the wilderness to hunt deer. Moretz, obviously, will play the protagonist while Morgan will play her dad. Should he sign on the dotted line, Liotta will play the film's main villain, a rival hunter who uses a bow and sees Morgan's character to be a threat. The film comes from writer Kevin Caruso, whose only other credit is the 2007 film I Tried, a gritty drama featuring the band Bone Thugs N Harmony, all...

[1] 2012 is already shaping up to be the biggest year yet of Adam Brody's post-oc career, as the actor books two more high-profile roles. One is Some Girls, a feature adaptation of Neil Labute's recent play about an almost-married man who travels across the country to visit his ex-girlfriends. [Update: The Hollywood Reporter [2] writes that Mad Men helmer Jennifer Getzinger will direct the drama.] But Brody's next project will likely be Rob Meltzer's Welcome to the Jungle, as that project will shoot next month in Puerto Rico. The story centers around a design firm that goes on retreat to a tropical island, only to become stranded and see Lord of the Flies-style chaos break out. Brody will play the protagonist, who must save his colleagues from a power-hungry leader. Brody's only one of a rather eclectic cast that also includes Rob Huebel, Dennis Haysbert, Kristen Schaal, and Jean-Claude Van Damme. Brody...

As far as young actresses go, Chloe Moretz certainly has her pick of the litter when it comes to prospective projects at the moment. After dazzling audiences in the Martin Scorsese-directed “Hugo” this past fall, Moretz will next be seen in another high profile project, Tim Burton’s upcoming adaptation of the ‘70s British supernatural soap “Dark Shadows." Well it looks like the actress has another intriguing project to add to her increasingly busy slate of films, as The Hollywood Reporter has word that she’ll be joining “Watchmen” actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan in the Karyn Kusmama helmed “The Rut.” Remember Morgan also starred alongside Moretz in the ultimately frustrating and uneven “Texas Killing Fields,” so the two should have some type of working rapport in place to prepare them to play father and daughter in “The Rut.” The film is penned by scribe Kevin Caruso, is said...

It’s one thing to try to impress your parents by, say, improving your grades at school or mowing the lawn without being asked. But heading off alone into the dark woods to master hunting and fishing? That’s taking it to the next level! Still, that’s exactly what Chloe Moretz is doing in The Rut, and Watchmen’s Jeffrey Dean Morgan has just signed on to play her pop.Back in 2010, the first rumblings of the film – which Kevin Caruso wrote and Jennifer’s Body director Karyn Kusama is on board to direct – had Moretz loosely attached. Described as Into The Wild meets Winter’s Bone (indie cred grab alert!), The Rut sees Moretz play a girl whose father goes missing, forcing her to fend for herself and set her off on a path to prove she can live up to his wilderness teachings.Kusama and the producers...

Chris Evans‘ stock raised a good deal this past year with Captain America: The First Avenger, and, for his own good, he’s reprising the same role in just a few months with The Avengers. But those fun, mildly diverting efforts aren’t really what he wants to be doing — I mean, the best performance Evans gave last year was in a film nobody saw.
So I give him a ton of credit for stepping outside the box a little more, with Variety reporting that he’s in talks to lead Bong Joon-ho‘s English-language debut, Snow Piercer. Written by the Mother helmer and producer Park Chan-wook, the post-apocalyptic story — an adaptation of the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige — follows “a group of people on a train without a final destination, struggling to survive after the end of the world brings on a cataclysmic ice age.” It’s been said...
