Besides giving star-studded performances as Thanos in (majorly) Marvel’s Avengers film series, Cable in Deadpool 2, and Gurney Halleck in the Dune lore, one of Josh Brolin’s most unforgettable roles is from his series from 2022, Outer Range. Displaying his brilliant acting prowess as Royal Abbott in it, he won everyone’s hearts with this critically approved sci-fi Western drama as well.

Before the series’ release, there was quite a bit of buzz that it might feel like it was piggybacking Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone saga. However, Brolin was quick to shut all of that down with a disagreeing statement that made it evident that besides a few necessary factors required in Western projects, perhaps nothing was similar between these two masterpieces of different universes.

If you’re just as Yellowstone-pilled as we are, it might seem like the genres of Western and neo-Western borderline don’t exist beyond Taylor Sheridan and Kevin Costner’s projects. Fortunately, that’s not true — and this sensational TV show directed by Brian Watkins and produced by none other than Brad Pitt proves it.
Better yet, it finally released its second season just now!
Outer Range Returns with a Bang
Brought to us by Charles Murray instead of Brian Watkins this time, Outer Range Season 2 finally hit the screens on May 16 to continue its convoluted but ultimately intriguing story. In the first day, it has already managed to surpass the success of Season 1, raking up 83 and 100% Critic and Audience Scores on Rotten tomatoes against the debut series’ 79 and 60% scores, respectively.
On IMDb, Outer Range boasts a solid 7.1/10 score for both seasons, but on both platforms, these numbers are likely to change over time.

Plot: The mystery surrounding the enigmatic void on the west pasture of the Abbott family ranch deepens as Royal and his wife Cecelia struggle to keep their family together in the aftermath of their granddaughter’s sudden disappearance. The stakes have never been higher for the Abbotts, who now face threats on multiple fronts with profound and unforeseen circumstances that could shake the very foundations of time itself.
Review: With so many shows on television and streaming platforms, it can be nearly impossible to distinguish yourself from the pack. While Outer Range may be a complex blend of genres, the first season was unlike anything else. Blending elements of everything from Yellowstone to Arrival and The Twilight Zone, Outer Range ended its first season with some substantial cliffhangers, while the second season wastes no time diving right into the murky complexity of this story of multiverses, parallel timelines and so much more.

Despite having a presence in literature for over a century, the sci-fi western has remained a grossly overlooked genre. In recent years, except for the underrated Cowboys & Aliens, no other major venture has tried to take the risk of experimenting with the genre, which highlights its uniqueness of amalgamating the Wild West with the complexities of science fiction. Amazon Studios’ Outer Range, created by Brian Watkins, is a meticulously crafted thriller that highlights the genre’s untapped potential through a heady mix of murder mystery, family/social drama, and temporal shenanigans. The first season released a couple of years ago consisted of eight episodes, which had a lot to unpack, which is why, as the second season of Outer Range premieres this week, we would like to briefly discuss every key point viewers need to remember to get into the series with ease.

After a two-year wait, Outer Range season 2 is scheduled to premiere in 2024. Created by Brian Watkins, Outer Range was an instant hit among critics and audiences. The series was one of Amazon Prime Video’s success stories of 2022. However, its finale left viewers with several unanswered questions. Outer Range succeeded where many others have failed, especially as a multi-genre series. Better described, Outer Range is a blend of Yellowstone and Doctor Who if the Tardis were a large hole on the ground in the ranch. “Outer Range,” TV’s craziest sci-fi Western, is finally coming back for Season 2. On Monday, on the two-year anniversary of the series premiere, Prime Video dropped a trailer for the new season, which arrives on May 16.
“Outer Range” stars Josh Brolin as Royal Abbott, a Wyoming rancher who is having problems holding on to his land and his family. One day, he finds a mysterious hole on his property that might be some sort of portal through time. So now he has another, even bigger problem.
According to Amazon, Season 2 “propels its characters deeper into the void with profound and unforeseen circumstances that could shake the very foundations of time itself.” The trailer is packed with wild imagery, like Autumn (Imogen Poots) eating some black mineral dust and then her eyes turning the same color, and even wilder dialogue, like Royal Abbott musing about how it’s impossible to know...

The Outer Critics Circle (Occ), the official organization of writers on New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers and national publications, today announced the nominees for the 72nd Annual Outer Critics Circle Awards, honoring the 2022-2023 Broadway and Off-Broadway season.
“New York, New York” received a major backing from this announcement, which coincides with the production’s opening night. The new musical with songs from John Kander, the late Fred Ebb and Lin-Manuel Miranda earned a whopping 12 nominations, the most of any production. “Some Like it Hot” trails just behind it with 10 nominations. The most nominated plays of the season are the Off-Broadway sensation “Downstate” and Broadway epic “Leopoldstadt,” both with six nominations apiece.
This is the first season with newly reconstructed acting categories, which have removed gender specifications, and have been expanded to separately include off-Broadway performers. In the previous configuration, actors in Broadway and off-Broadway productions competed in the same category.

There’s good and bad news on the “Outer Range” front, Prime Video’s excellent, Western/metaphysical sci-fi show starring Josh Brolin, Imogen Poots, and an outstanding supporting cast. The good news: the critically acclaimed “The Outer Range”—which we adored, it’s one of the best shows of the year—but the bad news is that its original showrunner and creator Brian Watkins has been replaced. Instead, Charles Murray, who has an overall deal with Amazon Studios, will come aboard as showrunner and executive producer for season two.

Prime Video has ordered a second season of Outer Range, a neo-Western that stars Josh Brolin as a Wyoming rancher fighting for his land and family. Charles Murray, who has an overall deal with Amazon Studios, will take over for creator Brian Watkins as showrunner.
The eight-episode first season kicked off in April and followed the Abbotts as they coped with the disappearance of daughter-in-law Rebecca. They were pushed closer to the brink when the Tillersons, owners of the profit-driven neighboring ranch, made a play for their land. An untimely death in the community sets off a chain of tension-filled events, and seemingly small-town, soil-bound troubles come to a head with the arrival of a mysterious black void in the Abbotts’ west pasture.

A lot goes into signing onto a role for Josh Brolin. But it didn’t take much for him to agree to star in Amazon Prime Video’s “Outer Range.”
“I never want to do anything straightforward,” he tells Variety. “I find it boring. This felt like a major swing and it had all the room to fail, and I like those odds.”
The series, despite being part of the western genre, isn’t like others. Set against the Teton Mountains in Wyoming, using the allure of a bottomless hole to weave a multi-layered story together.
“I think the West is a lot stranger than our narrative categories have always really portrayed,” creator Brian Watkins says. “I wanted to write something that I felt encompassed the West I knew, as a place that was always reaching for transcendence. It is a place that is undeniably filled with mystery and wonder.

Josh Brolin has spent his career pushing the narrative boundaries of the West.
Roles in resurgent Westerns such as “No Country for Old Men” and “True Grit” fortified the Oscar nominee’s place in the genre’s recent canon. His first major TV role was on ABC’s 1989 series “The Young Riders,” about the Pony Express.
The year prior to “Riders,” Brolin spent 24 hours believing he’d get his big break on CBS’ “Lonesome Dove” miniseries, having been cast as Newt, an orphan in the West, alongside his all-time favorite actor Robert Duvall. But the day after getting the role, the network pulled the offer, citing a contractual obligation to eventual star Rick Schroder.
“It was the greatest moment of my life,” Brolin recalls. “It is still the most elated I’ve ever felt about anything work-related and then it left as quickly as it came. I was absolutely freaking devastated.

“It was the greatest moment of my life,” Brolin recalls. “It is still the most elated I’ve ever felt about anything work-related and then it left as quickly as it came. I was absolutely freaking devastated.

A lot has changed since Josh Brolin last made television two decades ago, but it turns out he was perfectly suited for the streaming era.
The 54-year-old actor found exactly what he was looking for and then some by way of Amazon Prime Video’s Outer Range, a neo-Western family drama with a sci-fi center that is often elevator-pitched as “Yellowstone meets Lost.” Brolin plays Royal Abbott, a ranching family patriarch who discovers a shimmering black void on his Wyoming property that seemingly functions as a portal through time. Concurrently, Royal has to contend with numerous threats to his family and his land as he struggles to maintain both.

“There’s something really magic that happens when you think you’re embarking on a risk, because it’s so unknown,” declares Imogen Poots (“The Father”) about portraying a character that subverts expectations on genre-bending drama like Amazon’s “Outer Range.” “I thought it was ambitious, the fusing of the Western genre with, you know people say sci-fi, but we’re sort of just the idea of the unknown,” she proclaims, adding for our recent webchat, “it was very unique, and it felt like something I hadn’t come across before and haven’t done yet.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“I loved the collaboration,” admits double Emmy nominee Lili Taylor about what she most valued about working on Amazon’s genre-bending drama “Outer Range.” “We were there for about eight months during Covid and it sort of felt like an outward bound; like a camp, so we were all bonded,” she proclaims, adding for our recent webchat, “and I loved the elements, I think the elements were a character in the show; the wind, the vistas, the heat.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“The ranch is like another character, so we really needed to lean in to the Western in that sense,” reveals Jennifer Getzinger about Amazon’s genre-bending “Outer Range.” “But then, of course, whenever we did go to the more sci-fi elements, that’s where we could use a different type of visual language,” she proclaims, adding for our recent Q&a on the show’s distinct look and feel, “we actually put a lot more movement in it, it was a lot more dreamy I would say, or something where you’re just not sure what’s real.” We talked with Getzinger as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2022 Emmy Awards contenders. Remote production went to a whole new level during the pandemic, and “Outer Range” could serve as television’s Exhibit A. Several members of the show’s crafts team sat down with IndieWire’s Jim Hemphill to discuss the making of the visually complex series. The panel consisted of director Lawrence Trilling, production designer Tommaso Ortino, VFX supervisor Jason Piccioni, editor and producer Travis Baker, and composers Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans.
The thing is, some of them hadn’t met until today.
“Some of us are just meeting each other today or at the premiere,” Trilling said. “We missed the collegial warmth you can have while making a show.”
The television Western is currently having quite the renaissance thanks to “Yellowstone” and its massively popular prequel “1883,” but “Outer Range” has little more than setting in common with its fellow Westerns. In fact, it’s pretty safe to say...

It’s science fiction’s world on television and we’re all just living in it. The little geek genre that could has come to dominate the TV landscape with everything from sci-fi comedies like Netflix’s Russian Doll to sci-fi workplace satires like Apple TV+’s Severance. Science fiction has become so pervasive that many shows aim to figure out an angle in addition to the already out-there form.
Rarely has a show been more successful in choosing an additional angle to present alongside sci-fi than Prime Video’s Outer Range. This eight-episode series starring Josh Brolin adds a dash of neo Western noir to its heady premise as Brolin’s character, the rancher Royal Abbott, discovers a mysterious time-altering Void on his massive Wyoming property.

Even showrunner Brian Watkins and his writing team couldn’t answer all the mysteries or twists and turns that they spawned in season 1 of Prime Video’s Outer Range. The premiere season spoonfed audiences a steady pace of the bizarre that built up more and more throughout the season, with the show’s final week arguably giving us the strangest two episodes. Yet while the series keeps piling on the questions, there were finally a few much needed answers as well. Questions like…

“Outer Range” star Imogen Poots knows more than you do.
As Autumn, Poots plays the oddball hippie chick who shows up on the family farm of Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin) and soon becomes a key part of an expansive mystery involving a bottomless hole on the Abbott’s property, a next-door neighbor with secrets of his own (Will Patton) and time travel. She becomes even more of a force in the series’ later episodes, where her messianic tendencies come to the forefront, which not-so-coincidentially coincide with her running out of her medication for her bipolar disorder. Somehow, Autumn always has the answers, even when she’s becoming unglued.

“Outer Range” has come to an end. And what an ending.
Episodes 7 and 8 of the Josh Brolin-led supernatural drama, now streaming on Prime Video, exposed old secrets, revealed new truths and unleashed many, many buffalo on an unsuspecting Wyoming town. It was an apt perfect payoff for what was already a masterclass in slow-burn mythology-building and deft character work, with stunning performances from Lili Taylor, Imogen Poots, Noah Reid and Will Patton (amongst many others). And typical to the show, it beautifully mixed everyday drama (who will be victorious at the rodeo?) with oversized mystical quandaries.
Given what unfolded over the last four episodes, we had to chat with creator and executive producer Brian Watkins about the spellbinding final stretch of episodes – and what’s in store for the future of “Outer Range.”
Major spoilers for “Outer Range” follow. If you haven’t finished the season, Do Not read on.

In the end, it was Vanessa Williams circa 1991 whose lyrics best encapsulated Prime Video’s wild sci-fi western “Outer Range:” “Isn’t this world a crazy place?”
After a season of surreal musical moments, Noah Reid hit a high note with Williams’ classic “Save the Best for Last” in this week’s finale, when Billy Tillerson euphorically serenaded aspiring cult leader Autumn (Imogen Poots) in the lobby of a bank and vowed to protect her from her rival, gruff rancher Royal (Josh Brolin).
“They kicked around a lot of songs for that moment in the bank,” Reid told Variety. “But that Vanessa Williams song is so perfect for a song that would be probably playing in the bank and also explains exactly to [Billy] where he is and who he...

Outer Range has captured audiences’ imaginations with its engrossing twists and turns, outlandish science fiction elements, and genre-bending action. Set predominantly in Wyoming, the location itself very much plays an important part of the story, almost as if it is another character within the show. Without the Western motif of the beautiful plains, mountains, and prairie; the small town feel of the show would not be as successful.
Outer Range follows a rancher, Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin), fighting for his land and keeping his family together. Royal eventually stumbles upon a mysterious black void in a pasture on his property, coinciding with the arrival of Autumn (Imogen Poots), a strange drifter with some sort of spiritual connection to Abbott’s ranch. While the Abbott family copes with the disappearance of their daughter-in-law Rebecca, they are pushed further to the brink when a rival family, the Tillersons, try to take over their land.

“Outer Range” is our new obsession and with good reason. The Prime Video original series releases two new episodes each week and stars Josh Brolin stars as Royal Abbott, the patriarch of a Wyoming ranching family that finds his way of life under attack — primarily by the overbearing zealot next door, Wayne Tillerson (played by Will Patton), but also by the discovery, on his western pasture, of a giant void that seems to be an otherworldly bridge between far-flung points in time.
We’re back with creator and showrunner Brian Watkins, who walks us through episodes 3 and 4. Watkins talks us through the symbology of the buffalo, Wayne’s bubbling Clamato and what he thinks about the disappearing mountain. Also learn what odd detail from “It’s a Wonderful Life” inspired an equally weird moment in “Outer Range.”

Amazon Prime Video’s Outer Range was created by Brian Watkins and stars Josh Brolin as family patriarch Royal Abbott, a Wyoming Rancher who discovers a mysterious and massive hole in the outreaches of his land that seems to defy the laws of physics.
The premiere features a narration in the booming voice of Brolin, describing the ancient Greek myth of Kronos (or sometimes ‘Cronos’), the youngest and leader of the mighty Titans, and eventual father of the pantheon of Gods including Zeus himself. It should be addressed that over the millenia, the mythos of Kronos has been confounded with another Greek deity, Chronos, who is the embodiment of time itself. Chronos has become synonymous with time in many different stories and legends, and eventually evolved into who many modern audiences know as ‘Father Time’. The showrunners of Outer Range seem...

“Outer Range” is our latest streaming obsession.
The new Prime Video series, which unleashes two new episodes each week, centers on a family of farmers, led by Royal (Josh Brolin) and Cecilia Abbott (Lili Taylor), who are attempting to keep their fragile family unit together while forces conspire from within and without. There’s the mysterious hippie chick Autumn (Imogen Poots), who has come to camp on their land; the lingering suspicion of eldest son Perry’s (Tom Pelphrey) missing wife (and mother to his child Amy); and the borderline suicidal rodeo riding of younger son Rhett (Lewis Pullman). Plus there’s the ranch next door (led by a colorful Will Patton) threatening their land. And in the first episode there’s a murder and an otherworldly void that opens up on their property.
TheWrap spoke at length with series creator Brian Watkins about every question from the first and second episode.

What do you call a TV series that’s part family drama, part Western and part supernatural mystery, with a film noir aesthetic and a David “Lynchian” style? Well, other than not boring, you’d call it “Outer Range,” a new Prime Video show brought to you by the crazy creative mind of Brian Watkins, who serves as creator and executive producer. To articulate its premise, Watkins told TheWrap, “What happens when a disenchanted world stumbles upon enchantment?” He adds, “The sci-fi in the show is not extraterrestrial — it’s terrestrial.”
Starring Josh Brolin, Lili Taylor, Imogen Poots and a litany of other perfectly cast actors, “Outer Range” centers on Royal Abbott (Brolin), a rancher fighting for his land and family, who discovers an inexplicable mystery at the edge of his Wyoming property – a giant, presumably bottomless hole. Is it heaven? Is it hell? Is it limbo? Is it the past?...

It’s impossible to talk about Prime Video’s dazzlingly creative and often-confounding new Western Outer Range without spoiling something. Literally, every episode of the eight-episode series is strewn with twists and developments, some of which factor into later arcs, while others just hang there, waiting for a second season to be greenlit in hopes of a resolution. It’s also packed to the denim seams with terrific performances and the potential to rank as a cult favorite shortly after the first three hours drop this Friday. Essentially, it’s the tale of cowboy Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin) and his fight to save his Wyoming ranch. But the modern-day drama from creator and executive producer Brian Watkins zigs into X-Files territory early on after Royal’s discovery of a bottomless chasm on his property than may or may not drop into another dimension. Soon after that, the story zags...

It’s usually easy to ascertain what tone a show is planning to strike. Then there are shows like Amazon Prime Video’s “Outer Range” which already sells itself as a genre mash-up and yet still leaves audiences asking, “Wait, is it supposed to be funny?”
Created by Brian Watkins, “Outer Range” is best summed up as a series for those who have watched “Yellowstone” on Paramount+ and said, “It’s good, but I wish it had more of a ‘Lost’ vibe.” If you’re thinking that sounds weird, you’d be right. The actors, for the most part, try their hardest to strike at whatever they think their character arc is, with Josh Brolin being the standout, but it’s doubtful most will stick around to figure out what the hell this show actually is about.

“Outer Range,” the new Josh Brolin-led Western series from Prime Video, aims to twist the well-worn genre at its very roots. To showcase the land of the West in a never-before-seen fashion, the eight-episode series mixes in an element of the supernatural, with mind-bending results.
“It took a very simple, straight-forward genre and then it took extraordinary twists, whether it be metaphysical or whatever you want to call it,” Brolin told Variety at the show’s premiere at Hollywood’s Harmony Gold theater on Thursday night. “It’s uncertain because there are so many directions it can go, and a lot of them can feel really cliché. But I feel like we kept it grounded.”
