By the time Cameron Crowe made Singles in 1992, the 35-year-old director was already a decade into his career's second act. A former journalist for Rolling Stone, he'd pivoted towards the movies after adapting his book about going undercover at a Los Angeles high school – Fast Times at Ridgemont High – for the screen in 1982. And his directorial debut, Say Anything... (1989), proved that he had a knack for capturing teen spirit.
Crowe, however, wanted his audience to grow up with him, so for his follow-up movie, he turned his attention to twentysomethings.

Bob Odenkirk's 30-plus-year career has included a stint as an SNL writer, a groundbreaking sketch series (Mr. Show), stand-up comedy, and, most recently, Better Call Saul, the Breaking Bad prequel in which he gives a brilliant performance as "morally flexible" lawyer Jimmy McGill. And how has the 54-year-old actor's outlook changed over that three-decade span? "As a young man I was the fuckin' expert on comedy, on who was funny and who wasn't funny and who's a douchebag," he says. "I still feel those things but I don't think I'm so right.

Meet the men and women who work behind the scenes to make big concerts happen. Showtime's new series Roadies comes from the mind of Cameron Crowe, the former Rolling Stone reporter and writer-director of the modern-movie classics Say Anything…, Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous. His light touch and decades of insider experience make this the rare showbiz saga that's more quirky and heartfelt than shocking and grim. The first episode airs this Sunday, June 26th (and is also currently available on YouTube for free, in an tamer TV-14 version), but...

Bill Murray welcomed Jimmy Kimmel back to Brooklyn — where he'll be taping Jimmy Kimmel Live! all week — on Monday with tales of baseball, outrageous music industry legends and filming his new film, Rock the Kasbah, in Morocco.
After arriving on horseback during Kimmel's Austin stand, Murray outdid himself in Brooklyn, taking the stage of the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Howard Gilman Opera House with a gaudy gold outfit and outlandish makeup. It gave his musings about his struggling Chicago Cubs an extra dramatic flare, but it seemed totally normal by...

Jennifer Love Hewitt and Ethan Embry seem to be rallying support for a Can't Hardly Wait reunion movie.
The teen comedy named after a Replacements song has had an enduring appeal for the children of the 1990s over the last 17 years, but rumours of a sequel never really caught fire.
That could all change following a screening of the film at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery last weekend, where several cast members reunited.
Jennifer Love Hewitt led the charge for a revival after the screening, writing on Twitter: "Can't Hardly Wait reunion movie anyone? Let's get them to make it!"

Over the past year, I have become familiar with a particular look that appears on someone’s face when they are considering for the first time that Miley Cyrus might actually be something more than a twerking, smirking, Gremlin-esque Horsewoman of the Apocalypse. I saw it on my dad’s face a few months ago when we watched SNL 40 and a surprisingly clothed Miley performed a surprisingly excellent cover of “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” making great use of her growly twang. I saw it on the faces of a few friends last week, when we were talking about Miley’s cover of the Replacements’ “Androgynous,” trying to square away our past perceptions of a vacuous Hannah Montana with the startlingly progressive comments Miley has made recently about her gender and sexuality. And I saw it on the faces of a few companions last night, as we all took in...

This afternoon, sensational news emerged that Chelsea’s Juan Mata could leave for Barcelona this summer after falling out with new manager Jose Mourinho.
The reports will shock many, especially given that the Spanish midfielder was the club’s Player of the Season last season and was also nominated for the Pfa Player of the Year award.
He has also been a big hit with fans since moving to West London from Valencia two years ago.
But apparently, the player has had a row with the “Special One” after being refused the increase in wages promised to him by the stipulations in the contract he signed back in 2011.
Mourinho is also said to be “unconvinced” by the midfielder, who may not factor into his plans next season.
The former Real Madrid boss is certainly not afraid to axe even the most popular and talented of his players. Just ask Mata’s compatriot Iker Casillas.

SNL Auditions Regis Philbin Replacements Last night’s Saturday Night Live hosted by Jason Segel with musical guest Florence + The Machine, averaged a 4.6/11 in metered-market households and a 2.8/12 in adults 18-49 in Local People Meters. The late-night sketch show was up a tenth in both measures from last week’s telecast hosted by Emma Stone with Coldplay. In 18-49, SNL mached its best result this season (tied with the Oct. 12 edition hosted by Charlie Day with Maroon 5). Here is Segel’s monologue, in which he was joined by his co-stars from The Muppets movie:...

No matter how many colorful words are written about the greatness of the Replacements, they will always remain perpetually underrated. That's because their excellence can scarcely be measured, as the Minneapolis band managed to craft some of the greatest songs of the 1980s, helped define one of the most critical underground movements in music history and generally push buttons and envelopes for the duration of their existence. He was forced out of the group in 1986, and the rest of the band splintered in 1991, but all hope of reconciliation ended on this day in 1995 when founding member and lead guitarist Bob Stinson passed away at his home in Minneapolis.
Stinson, a formidable six-string player, formed the band (originally called Dogbreath) with drummer Chris Mars and his younger brother Tommy on bass (Tommy was only 11 years old when he first started playing in a band with Bob). The trio jammed on '...

As Paul beams into UK cinemas, we caught up with director Greg Mottola to discuss making the film, music, and computer graphics…
This week, the sci-fi/comedy geek tease, Paul, beams onto our Earth-based cinema screens. In anticipation, Michael had the chance to chat with director Greg Mottola, whose previous work includes Superbad and DoG favourite, Adventureland.
Unfortunately, time was short, but Mottola gave us invaluable insight into the film's soundtrack, revealed his favourite pop culture references, and expounded on the enduring power of movie magic.
Beware: there are mild spoilers for some of Paul's prime gags, so if you're keeping yourself pure, come back later. Otherwise, read on!
One of the things that bowled me over with Adventureland was the soundtrack, where you kicked off with Bastards Of Young by the Replacements and had other tunes from Big Star, Lou Reed and Husker Du at key points.
Paul has a similar power pop sensibility,...

Top 5 Movies 2010
by Jason Frisbie
Since I only saw six new releases of the many that were released this 2010. I have listed the most notable five of them in order, rated “meh” to “awesome.” (Note: I also saw Inception. Double “meh”)
5. Date Night
I indeed saw this movie. Knowing Tina Fey on "30 Rock" and Steve Carrell of "The Daily Show" and "The Office" if you really want to talk about it, one would think this would be non-stop hilarity. But it falls short. Why? Because a movie executive thought “Hey- wouldn’t it be great if we got two really funny people to play a boring restricted suburban couple?!?” Hopefully, that executive was fired shortly after. If you do watch this film, you will be surprised at the chemistry between James Franco and Mila Kunis as methed-out couple who whore each other out for drug money. Guaranteed, the movie should...

You can't spit on the host and then show up with your B game. Kanye West knows this, which is why his pair of performances on this weekend's "Saturday Night Live" were among the most arresting in the show's 30-plus year history. You might recall that West took a hard shot at the long-running late night staple on his single "Power," unfavorably name-checking the sketch comedy show with the line "F--- 'SNL' and the whole cast. Tell 'em Yeezy said they can kiss my whole ass."
But when he showed up to perform the song on Saturday (October 2), Kanye paid the biggest compliment he could to the show: He delivered one of his typically eye-popping visual spectacles, one which will undoubtedly go down in the books. And keep in mind, everybody has played on SNL, from U2 and Abba, to Frank Zappa, the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Queen, R.E.M., Public Enemy,...

In addition to being an iconic star in the underground music scene, Nick Cave has also carved out an incredible niche for himself in the film world. He worked on the music for "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford," penned the screenplay for the 2005 indie hit "The Proposition" and contributed to the Leonard Cohen tribute film "Leonard Cohen: I'm Your Man." His most recent project is his most intriguing yet. According to the Wrap, Cave is working on a screenplay for a remake of "The Crow," the 1994 action film directed by Alex Proyas about an undead avenger (originally played by Brandon Lee). The original flick was a Goth-punk asskicker of a movie that was incredibly dark and featured a killer soundtrack (featuring Nine Inch Nails, the Cure, Stone Temple Pilots, Rage Against the Machine and the Jesus and Mary Chain), and the new version (to be...

I've been lucky over the years to catch early, small club shows by the likes of the Smashing Pumpkins, Lenny Kravitz, Beck, the Verve, Radiohead, Wilco, My Morning Jacket, Garbage, the Strokes, the Vines, Kings of Leon, Pearl Jam and countless others.
The thing about those shows is that you can never know in the moment that what you're seeing is a band on the verge, because at the time it just feels like you've witnessed an awesome show. And then the next thing you know the band you thought only you and a handful of other friends were into about is playing the local amphitheater or showing up on a "Twilight" soundtrack.
I say this because I saw one of those shows Tuesday night (July 13) right here in my hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. It was the third time in the past two years that I've seen South Carolina's Band of Horses,...
